DAFT PUNK w/ Ratatat @ the L.A. Sports Arena
2007-07-22 22:32:00
After paying off one of the security to get all of us on the ground floor, we soon took in the sounds of Sebastian and Kavinsky who were warming up the crowd. The two DJs staged two sets in between Daft Punk and Ratatat . There were near 14000 people there, and sold out. We got there aruond 6 and the show wasn't starting til 8 o'clock with Daft Punk playing at 11!Ratatat had an awesome back drop with what looked like to be shapes of silly putty, stop animation combined with speed and words. It was a really awesome set with sounds of wildcats during the song. They had the crowd going and this performance was better than the first time I saw them. I thought their set was pretty quick but still awesome. After that the battle began. This was the first time I saw Daft Punk so I was totally ready to smash through the crowd to get in the front. After 20 minutes of the second set from Sebastian & Kavinsky, we were nearly there. Maybe about 6 rows back, trying to hold our ground. I th

The Format has been one of my favorites for awhile. Their style has a sometimes indie, sometimes acoustic, folk, pop-rock sound/feel to it. I first saw them at Soma, in San Diego. They played with Mae, and Ozma. Ever since, I've been hooked. I highly recommend you pick up an album, & go see them. Now. Last Night: Common @ the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show!
2007-08-01 18:08:00
Jackie Chan is such a sweet sweet sweet man, yet very violent.  Yay!  The whole night both him and Chris Tucker were showin' mad love to eachother.  It was cute as crud!  Common opened with "The People" off his new album Finding Forever, which dropped yesterday.  He had a buncha people backin' him up on stage.  He went on to perform "U, Black Maybe", "Drivin' Me Wild" along with one of my older favs: "The Light"...Mid performance he did a 5 minute freestyle and I was way impressed.  Not cause he could but cause he wasn't flowin with words like duck, chuck and ....Here are some free tracks to get you a preview! The Game feat. DJ PremiereThe LightThe People They say feat. John Legend, Kanye WestYo our flash player went wackasaurus this morning so we changed it up.  It's a building project.  Any suggestions? hit us up!

We don't know how to Freestyle, but we Try!
2007-07-31 10:59:00
What up friends, I have some pictures from Saturday night. It was a super rad show. Our friend Libbie Linton rocked and she performed one of my favorite songs, "What's Left" which was totally awesome live. Everyone else played beautifully. It was a show where I liked all the bands which is rarely the haps. Hope y'all had swell weekends. Sometimes when we are in the car, or anywhere else, we like to pretend we can freestyle. It's completely terrible but whatever. Here are the songs we've been laying our flows with. This MIX is just for me, and Anyone who can Relate...
2007-08-04 02:53:00
These days are busy.  YOU might be able to agree that we need some more time, some quiet time.  This is the SLOW mix.  I'm going to find a quiet place this weekend (hopefully) and just be silent and read my new Dwell, listen to this mix, meditate on important things in life, draw furniture that I want to make in my garage, and get some rest.  If you can relate, then I'll see you at your local bookstore, coffee shop, park, roof top, etc.  Let me know if it helped! 6Pence None the Richer - A Million ParachutesAzure Ray - NovemberBjork - You Only Live TwiceThe Broadway Hush - White Courtesy BoxThe Cardigans - Lovefool (Puck Version)Straylight Run - Tool Sheds and Hot TubsCorinne Bailey Rae - DaydreamingElephant Parade - GoodbyeIsolde - Andas inFeist - GatekeeperEmi Meyer - ArivederciMadeleine Peyroux - La JavanaiseDudely Perkins - FlowersMaia Hirasawa - Chaos ClubThat picture above is Idaho.  Also this mix is a building mix.  I will continue to add songs to it.

100 Days, 100 Nights w/ Sharon Jones & the DK!
2007-08-11 21:45:00
"Got a Thing on My Mind" found it's way on our party playlist last night atleast three times!  We made believers last night that the 60s 70s soul funk sound can still be played today.  Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings make it easy.  You can hear samples of them all over Mark Ronson's "Version" Album as well as Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" UK hit.  The highly anticipated "100 Days, 100 Nights" album is droppin' on October 2nd which is such a long time from now especially if you've heard the album titled single.  If you haven't heard, Jones landed the part of "Lila" in Denzel's directed and starred upcoming film The Great Debaters with Forest Whitaker.  And of course, Jones and the DK will be featured on the soundtrack.  Catch them at the Apollo for their CD release on Oct. 6th as they kick off a tour that even goes to Canadia! Check out their sound now!100 Days, 100 NightsI'm Not Gonna Cry (45 instrumental)Got A Thing On My MindAlso click this to hear more from their forthco

LAST NIGHT: The Koop Islands Tour Live @ The El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles
2007-08-17 00:25:00
Many Thanks to our friends over at KCRW for guest listin' us for last night's show. The Koop, Swedes duo-Magnus Zingmark & Oscar Simonsson, along with a great line up, performed one of the best shows we've seen this summer! They performed Waltz For Koop favorites like "Tonight" and "Baby" as well as several pieces from last year's Koop Islands release. The Line up: the lovely Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen on the Mic, Karl Frid on trumpet/percussions with his suspenders and slicked back hair, Mattias Stahl on Marimbas/Vibraphone with his amazing 4 stick mad skills, Martin Hoper on Bass, and Ola Bothzèn on the Drums...white tops, suspenders, added to the very classy show with an eclectic audience, not to mention the ambiance of the El Rey. Other than this crunk-a-saurus too early-too much girl being totally wack!, it was a beautiful show, and you can tell the band was havin' a great time which really adds a lot to the performance. Best Moments: Hilde Louise came back out with a differe

One of our favorite Northwesters are back!  Minus the Bear will be kickin' off the "Planet of Ice Tour" next week (at a gazillion venues)  in lieu of their new album, "Planet of Ice," which I think sounds a bit heavier on the guitars, little lighter on the electronics but the same inbetween instrumental breakdowns that I love.  There new album came out last week and BBQs got some of the tracks for you to check out! KnightsDr. L'LingThrowin' Shapes If you are in the LA area be sure to mark your calendars for Nov. 3rd at the Avalon and/or Glass House the next night.  They'll be touring with the unpredictable likes of Subtle (Check out F.K.O.) and Ela so it should be an awesome show!

If I Had A Dog, I'd name him TEMPO!
2007-08-29 17:42:00
So that when he would jump on people I'd say "DOWN TEMPO!"...I'm so serious that's gonna happen one of these times.  Just you wait.  Anyways I was flippin through some tunes and found two downtempo/electronic/chill songs and couldn't wait to share them.  Then I thought, why not a whole mix?  Why the picture of sushi?  That's a pic of my friend's dish at Komasa in Little Tokyo, one of our favorite joints,  the dish is called Chirashizushi, it's a mixture of deliciousness.  I mention it cause ideally listening to downtempo, eating sushi, reading the news with a light breeze is where I want to be right now!  If you're into it, check out these songs and find a good spot!  Biking at the beach at night will work too if you're coastin' it.Prefuse 73 - Whisper In My Ear To Tell MeNightmares On Wax - DamnPortishead - PedestalSkye - What's Wrong With Me (Nouvelle Vague Remix)Daedelus - Girls (Nstrmntl)Nuculture - Night is BeautifulNotwist - ConsequenceDudely Perkins - Flowers

What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have
2007-08-28 15:25:00
I really like the title of the new Album; "What the Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have".  It just sounds really cool.  I'd say my likeness for Sarah Blasko is completely balanced between her song writing and her overall sound...and cause her parents are missionaries (not super typical-ish).  Australian born Blasko, crafts poppie to acoustic songs that are filled with tragic, bitter, sometimes hopeful and sometimes a little bit darker themes.  Her voice is definitely worth checking out, she totally needs to hook up with heavier synths and rock some more tronic! Pop these into your iPod, I'm listening to Blasko on my late night bike rides.  {Explain}Queen of ApologyI Could Never Belong To YouSarah has a buncha shows coming up in Australia for all you Aussies.  Also does anyone know of her older stuff when she was in the band "Acquiesce"??? Hook a BBQ up!

Moving Units Are Back With Hexes For Exes!
2007-09-20 13:01:00
It's about time the Moving Units get their sophomore out.  Their heavy bassline driven indie dance tracks from 2004's Dangerous Dreams really hit it big with the post-punk dance that everyone is lovin' on these days.  I remember that album on vinyl rotation at a friend's house after a fun night, a mini dance party, they're the best.  Hexes For Exes has just a tad less catchy dance grooves and a little bit more of that good indie sound (I said tad).  I previously loved that bit of funk they brought early on but this album's still got more than enough upbeat catchy indie rock to get you movin'!Moving Units will be performing Oct. 6th at the LA Weekly Detour Festival in Downtown LA with Justice, Sebastian & Kavinsky, The Deadly Syndrome etc. They will also be playing at Popscene in San Francisco on the 11th. Should be some great performances.   The album drops October 9th and as always we got some tracks for you so enjoy and be sure to pick it up if you like what you hear

A Day At The Fair w/ Mates of State!
2007-09-17 20:16:00
I haven't been to the fair this year. I like the fair. It's not super special, but I like it. Carnival games that encourage you to try your luck (as long as your wallet allows), rides and attractions that raise questions of personal safety, and just about deep fried anything. If you go with the right people you can have a grand time! The L.A. County Fair is in Pomona until September 30th! So, if you are considering a trip to the fair anytime soon maybe Mates of State will tickle your fancy! They have a strong indie-pop sound with amazing vocal harmonies; a similar style to Matt and Kim with the drum and synth driven tunes. Mates of State is the perfect companion for your trip to the fair!Ha HaProofsSo Many WaysCaliforniaSee them live.Mmm. mmm. good.

Luciano Sauza's New Bossa Nova
2007-09-11 18:25:00
I haven't written much about Jazz for a while, but the truth is that the Jazz world is thriving and it's really good to see that.  I see a broader appreciation for Jazz even though many of the greats have passed on.  There isn't a day that passes by where I don't find myself wanting to look for other jazz lovers and see their reactions when they describe how a certain song makes them feel.  I love it.  I was sitting with a nice older lady at a Border's talking about her favorite 50s Ella Fitzgerald LPs and her sharing almost alleviated my alienation, conversely it was ironic because she was a lot older.  Good stuff, I will go more often.  A part of Jazz that I love is the Bossa Nova, literally "New Trend" which I won't even begin to go into the maticulous details of it's origins or it's 60s wave of immense popularity growth here in the U.S.  Recently I was working on  a television show and one of our audience guests was Brazillian there with his mother.  I would name

The End Is Near: A New Mix Is Here!
2007-09-11 18:00:00
So it has been brought to my attention that the end of summer is getting closer as the days pass. I feel like I haven't really been able to enjoy summer the way I would've liked to. If I could do it over again, things probably would've ended up the same way. We decided to put together a mix to help facilitate the end of summer. Pop this into your ipods, go to the beach, watch the sunset, ride your bike, do whatever it is you do, and be happy. Summer will leave us and soon we will welcome autumn. The Deadly Syndrome - Animals Wearing ClothesDatarock - Fa Fa FaMeiko - Piano SongApples In Stereo - EnergyRay Lamontagne - TroubleFeist - Sea Lion WomanBeirut - Elephant GunLike Lions - Make It BetterCheck out "The Stash" if you haven't already.Show wideeyed some love!Happy Listening.

Scott Herren's Back with Prefuse 73's Preparations!
2007-09-09 16:58:00
Barcelona based veteran producer, Guillermo Scott Heren, has been working on everything for a long time, and now through Warped Records, he's bringin' out Prefuse 73's next album, Preparations.  The album's single "Class Of 73 Bells" has already created tons of positive reviews for this upcoming album. For those of you who don't know, Prefuse 73 is one of the solo projects of Heren that has many elements and great combinations of jazz, down tempo, hip hop, dance, electronic, and glitch rock.  Prefuse has collaborated with some of my favorites including Zero 7, MF DOOM, Beastie Boys and Kazumasa Hashimoto.  Heren's incredible multi-instrumental talents and his thorough knowledge and appreciation for the electronics side has created yet another consistent album that boasts a complete mastering of sound.  Preparations drops October 23rd on Warped Records and it is highly recommended that you go pick up the physical album because in addition to the album, you'll also get "Ensemb
