Kuala Lumpur Job Carnival, UTM Semarak, 1-2 Sept 2007
2007-08-26 08:07:02
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Jalan Semarak campus is organizing the Kuala Lumpur Job Carnival (Karnival Pekerjaan) which will be held on 1 and 2 September 2007. This is part of the effort by the Ministry of Human Resources (Jabatan Tenaga Kerja) and the Electronic Labor Exchange (ELX) to provide better access to job opportunities for Malaysian job seekers. If you are going there using public transport, the easiest way is to use the Putra LRT and stop at Damai station. From there, take taxi or bus. And please, please don’t forget to bring the most updated copies of your resume and the relevant copies of certificates if you intend to apply for jobs. The Jalan Semarak Campus is the secondary to their main campus in Skudai, Johor Bahru. But I believe few would know that The Semarak Campus is where the UTM was originally born. It all started way back before the Malaysia independence, when a technical school was established in Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Kuala Lumpur and then upgraded

Job Opportunity with General Electric (GE)
2007-08-25 02:27:38
There are 2 job openings available for Application Engineer in General Electric , GE (Oil and Gas division) at their office based in their KLCC office. The good thing is that, they are looking for those with 1 year of experience or less. So for those who are either fresh graduates still looking for jobs, graduates with part time jobs or simply looking for better opportunity somewhere else, then this is a good opportunity for you, especially if you are looking to get into Oil and Gas field. There is a downside of the job opening though. They are presently looking to hire 2 female engineers, and according to the email forwarded from a friend, it is because they want to create some sort of ‘gender diversification’. Covering the Asia Pacific region, the Application Engineer is responsible to drive and assist customers in selecting the most appropriate technical configuration, analyze local customer’s needs and identify the right GE product for them. Additionally, you wi

Resigning from job - get it right
2007-08-23 10:29:36
Writing Resignation Letter Few of the most popular questions I received related to the resignation issue are: “Can you help to write my resignation letter?” “Do you have a sample of a good resignation letter?” “I just wrote my resignation letter. Can you check if the letter sounds OK to you, or not?” With all due respect, while resignation letter is an important document that needs to be officially submitted upon resignation, writing a so-called good resignation letter is the least you should be worry about. Some people try too hard to make impression in their resignation letter without realizing that it carries little or no impact. After all, it is not how you write your resignation letter that forms the overall feedback to your employer; it’s your work performance that does. So, if you work in your company and you were doing a pathetic job over there, then no amount of beauty that you put in your resignation letter will change the way your b

Average Graduate Gets a Job Before Graduation
2007-08-29 07:12:00
My brother in law recently graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Skudai, Johor in the field of Mechanical Engineering (major in Aeronautic). The convocation was held on August 2007, and to be exact, 2 weeks ago. Before the graduation ceremony, he already secured his position as a trainee in one of the manufacturing companies in Shah Alam and will be starting work next week. The pay for the trainee job hardly reaches RM1000 per month, but he took it anyway. He knows if he is choosy he will be up for a tough time. I will tell you how his attitude will work well for him. He is an Average Graduate . Firstly, my brother in law is an average student; the kind of student that you meet frequently, every day in the campus. When I met him when he was on his 2nd year, he seemed to be struggling and had the CGPA grade between 2.2 to 2.6. I can’t remember how many times he had to resit for exams. He loves his course and field but he found it difficult to cope with the studies

Ramadhan Coming, Rajawang Review and New Malaysia Football Team?
2007-08-28 07:07:00
Ramadhan is Coming It will be exactly 2 weeks before the Ramadhan starts. Ramadhan is the holy month where the Muslims observe fasting during the day and break the fast during the sunset prayer time. Time really flies and it is already 1 year since last year’s Ramadhan. This will be the first time I will be fasting in Sarawak after moving here December last year. And working with few companies who have the Muslims as the minority, it overwhelms me to see how much support I got from the non-Muslim colleagues in the office. I will get emails wishing me ‘good luck’, ‘happy fasting’ and so on and whenever we walk out of the door leaving the office, they will say, ’selamat berbuka puasa’. I will miss those wishes here. I will also got some curious inquiries like, “How can you tahan not eating for the whole day?” to which I answer, “It’s good for health. You should try it some time”. They would response with a grin. Work From Home, Work From Anywhere, Work With Nature
2007-08-27 12:30:44
If you are a frequent visitor of this website, you will notice that last week this blog was updated less frequently than usual. This is because on the weekend I flew down from Kuching to KL to meet my parents (both mine and wife’s), picked them up, and flew back to Kuching. It was the school holiday and they have been planning to come to Kuching for quite some time. Even the Air Asia tickets were bought many, many months ago. 1-Night Trip to Permai Rainforest Resort, Santubong, Sarawak It was quite a hectic week as we planned a number of activities to fill up the 1-week school holiday. And working from home gives me the flexibility to arrange my work schedule and slot it with the family activities, which were mostly outdoors. One such activity was going for a 1 night trip to Permai Rainforest Resort which is located at the foot of Mount Santubong, Sarawak. It took more than 1 hour to reach the place if you drive from Kuching. I brought my laptop along with me, hoping I could su

August 2007 Career & Job Tips
2007-09-03 07:23:51
Here are some highlights of August 2007 postings, tips and happenings. For career women who are currently working in the public service out there, I doubt any of the news below will be better than the latest announcement from Najib that they now can take maternity up to 5 years (unpaid leave). They can opt to take a continuous 5 years off or accumulate the holiday in stages, but one thing for sure is that, they can come back after 5 years and still enjoy 3 stages of increment. This is follow up of the initial proposal earlier this month. 5 Reasons Why You Need to Find Another Job Yes, the time is now for you to start finding another job. And what if you have an excellent job, excellent pay, and working with excellent company? Should you find another job too? Ok, ok, stop judging. Read first. Should I Stay in My Job When I Start Losing My Memory?
2007-09-02 00:36:48
Sometimes being in a job for too long can adversely affect your memory. Take the dear George Bush for example. Not only he forgets, he also embarrassingly said things that are incoherent with his memory. In an interview with Asia Pacific journalists recently, he told the journalists he was sorry when he heard Datin Seri Endon passed away, and that he made attempts to call to the Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. He then appeared surprised when told that Abdullah has re-married to Jeanne Abdullah. He responded by saying that he will congratulate the Prime Minister, not realizing he has done that when they were married in June 2007. Here’s full story from The Star: US President George W. Bush was delighted to learn that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has remarried. In an interview with journalists from the Asia Pacific, including Bernama, on Thursday, Bush said: “When his wife (the late Datin Seri Endon Mahmood) died, I tried to call him ear

The “Employer’s Block” - Why Employer Rejected My Resume
2007-08-31 12:26:28
If you are a blogger, you will perhaps familiar with the term blogger’s block or writer’s blog. I do not know who was first to introduce the phrase (If I am not wrong it is Darren Rowse of ProBlogger) but blogger’s block refers to a situation that prevents you from blogging. In other words, you become stuck going forward and you can’t write. So what is an employer’s block? Using similar analogy, employer’s block refers to a state that prevents the employer from picking you up as a possible job candidate after going your resume. This leaves you with no chance of attending job interview and prove your worth. And this happens due to a reason or few reasons that we may never know. Sometimes, we feel that we have written good enough resume that we think that the employer will call us for that long awaited interview schedule. But the call never comes, and we want to know why. While it is probably impossible to know the real truth why, it is always possible

Happy 50th Merdeka, and Being a Professional Footballer
2007-08-30 14:11:33
By the time of this writing perhaps more than half of this blog readers and subscribers have gone MIA and would not come back online until the weekend is over, but I guess it is still not too late for me to wish Happy Merdeka to fellow Malaysians. Yes, celebrating things for the 50th time is not something that you do too often. Incidentally, my school also celebrated its Golden Jubilee this year to mark its 50th of establishment and they have gone many miles to organize major events around the year. This morning the Headmaster and the Old Boys President appeared on MHI for some cover stories by the TV3 guys. I guess the current students will be happy with the development. Back to the Merdeka celebration, it is quite a long weekend, so I hope whatever you do and whatever your plan is, do take care of yourself. If my memory is clear, I have never celebrated the country’s independence by going to the Dataran Merdeka (or any other countdown event), waiting for the 12.00am countdow

Host Your Blog for Free, and Perhaps Make Money Too
2007-09-24 23:32:35
Major providers of blogging platform like Blogspot, Wordpress or even Friendster allow you to host your blog, with the condition that you use their domain name i.e. your blog address will go something like nasigoreng.blogspot.com, mapiau.wordpress.com or lim.friendster/blog or something like that. A Malaysian guy by the name of Beng Han is giving out a generous offer where you can host your blog on his server for free, and using your own domain! This means that you only need to invest to buy a domain name and a 100MB of hosting capacity will be provided for a start. At the moment, Beng Han has attracted more than 15 blogs to be hosted on his very own server and is now moving to a 2nd batch intake. As for the domain name, you can buy it on your own (e.g. at Exabytes for RM55) or you can buy direct from Beng Han for RM50. So what’s the catch? There’s no hidden catch and agenda. What Beng Han asked for a return is to put a banner that links back to his blog, so I think this i

Nurin’s Death Shock the Nation
2007-09-21 12:25:56
My deepest condolences to the family of adik Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, who was laid to rest after the DNA test conducted on a dead body found inside a sports bag concluded that it was her. The body was such in a pity state that it put both the father and mother in denial state before being able to accept the fate that their cute 8 year daughter is now gone. The clueless searching for 1 month finally comes to a tragic end. Adik Nurin was believed to have died after unbearable pain that some of her body parts shifted and changed. Murder cases involving kids in recent time make me wonder if the place is no longer safe for them to be? In July 2007, 4 year old Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying (Ying Ying) was murdered and her bone fragments strewn in at least four different places – a cemetery, river and an apartment dumpsite in Penang. In 2004, Siti Syazwani, 9 years old was found dead after missing from her house in Tikam Batu, Sungai Petani, Kedah. In another shocking case, 4-year old Nurul Huda Abd

For Fresh Graduates and Graduating Students
2007-09-17 10:05:21
1. You are Hired! Program by Malaysian Today Malaysian Today (not the Raja Petra’s Malaysia Today) has partnered up with JobsDB.com in some sort of reality program to search for the ‘Malaysia’s next corporate hotshot’. Unlike Donald Trump’s The Apprentice and the Malaysia’s very own Apprentice, The Firm, the program will not be aired in TV and you would not get that 5 minutes of fame like Omarossa or Dr Jahar. However, this will be a pretty good exposure for the targeted contestants, which are the final year students to find a stepping stone in the working world. Basically, in the You are Hired! program, 50 contestants will be picked during the program road tours held at major campus and universities across Malaysia and out of the 50 contestants, 7 winners will be selected and each will be offered a job from 7 participating companies in the program. The selection will be based on academic results (40% ratio) and interview performance (60%). Addition

Dealing with Multiple Job Offers
2007-10-09 02:58:00
Dealing with multiple job offers is one of the ‘problems’ perhaps long awaited by any typical job seeker. It is one of the good problems as you now have more than 1 option in making a career decision. But come to think of it, how would you really handle when you are facing it? Is it all good? I was asked for opinion by MJ, who blogs at I am Rainbow, a blog rich with ramblings and opinions on career and job search guides regarding this problem. The question was, when dealing with multiple job offers, should a job candidate reveals the other offer(s) from the other company(ies) when striking a deal with each employer before accepting the final offer? My answer to MJ is that, if I am in the said position, I shall look into how the prospective employer will react if I reveal to them about the other job offer. I may not reveal it if I feel the employer makes assumption that I am not serious and am just testing the job market. This is evident to a case that I handled before fe

The 7 Habits of Highly Unsuccessful Job Seekers
2007-10-03 00:30:52
1. Procrastinate By procrastinating they become an easy prey for failure. Procrastinate means they keep on delaying doing what they need to do in order to get job. Before the final year exam, while other people start to write up their resumes, they refuse to follow suit. “Can’t you see I’m busy? Final exam is just around the corner. How can I spend time doing a resume?”, they shouted while their fingers were busy pressing the Nintendo game console. They also keep on saying how much they hate their job and that they need to find another job soon. The problem is, they have been saying that for the past 18 months. And until now they have not been doing anything. When their friends get the job much earlier then them, they responded with such a dramatic and shocking look, with their eyes doubled in size, followed by some dramatic background music theme. Look how dramatic the look is from the hamster below. See if you are any different. Watch it and indulge yourself

Going into the Space - How Our Angkasawan Made It
2007-10-21 12:51:02
As you have known, the country’s very first astronaut, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor has been on the International Space Station (ISS) for about 10 days and is due to be landing back in ocean via a capsule some time in the evening today. (Latest report from The Star is that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar has safely landed via the Soyuz capsule somewhere in the Kazakhstan ocean together with 2 other Russian astronauts). Only 14 nations have successfully sent their astronauts in the space, and Malaysia added to the latest list, making it the the 15th country. An orthopedic surgeon at Hospital Kebangsaan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM), Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s trip is not only to list the country in the space mission, but also carrying out some important laboratory scientific researches back to earth. Even though many will questions how much exactly Malaysia has spent to get a countryman to space in addition to buying 13 Sukhoi jet fighters from the Russian, many Malaysians aspiring t

Do it the Lim Goh Tong’s Way
2007-10-26 01:10:52
Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong passed away a few days ago and will be remembered as one of the entrepreneur greats in Malaysia. One of the earliest entrepreneurial stories I learned during the academic years was the Boon Siew’s story which was then part of the Form 2’s Kemahiran Hidup curriculum (and I believe it is still is today). Like Boon Siew, Lim Goh Tong was also an immigrant who came to Malaya with less than 150 US dollar (RM525) and eventually became one of the richest men in the country. In fact, Boon Siew was one of Goh Tong’s business associates when the latter was making his way building Genting. It was Boon Siew’s palm station that supplied the petrol to Lim Goh Tong’s vehicles to climb the hill. During this time Boon Siew was at the peak of his career. I remember many years ago passing the MPH shop in Gurney Plaza, Penang and saw the ‘My Story’ book written by him (actually it is ghost written as Goh Tong did not speak and write English) d

JOB is Just a Tool
2007-10-24 04:10:29
If you read 5 Reasons Why You Need to Find Another Job, you will understand why you need to to start looking for other jobs now. Sometimes, when we are too comfortable with our present job and company, we somehow forget there is this big giant inside our own self waiting to be awaken. Job is Just a Tool. Just like money, job is just a tool that shapes up your career (learn about money as a tool here). Job gives you money, which in turns allows you to pay your bills and buy doughs for your stomach. But job itself is merely a short term solution to a long term need. While your job may come with a great basic salary and irresistible perks and benefits, those rewards will mean nothing when you start hating your jobs. When job satisfaction is no longer at its accorded place, suddenly, great compensation and benefits such as stock options, 4 months contractual bonuses and overseas trips become inadequate. Often times, it means nothing. Does that sounds familiar to you? It leads to many case

So there is no need for you to copy information such as email address, open your email browser, and write the subject of the email all over again. The employers can benefit too in the sense that they can know exactly where their candidates come from. Off course, this is very early to tell whether this will be a successful partnership in the future but I am taking it from the positive point of view. At the moment, we have active job vacancies from 2 employers. Few other employers

RM1,045 in one day doing 14 jobs
2007-11-04 08:06:13
I was reading Asia Pacific Headhunter blog when I stumbled upon their story about a young chap in Japan who tried to create the world record of doing the most jobs in one day. It was presented in a video format depicting his journey from one job to another riding his bicycle. The idea was presented by LoveJobs, a Japanese website (with English translation) that is targeted to showcase the challenge. It follows the latest work trend in Japan where part time employees fulfill the employer’s very short term needs (e.g. few hours) capitalizing their mobility and close proximity to the job location. At the end of the day (he started the jobs at 4am and finished around 3.50am the next morning) he has traveled 39.6km doing 14 different jobs and ended up with a total pay of 35,900 Yen, which is equivalent to RM1,045 or more than 300 US dollars. We should ask ourselves, how many jobs we are willing to do in one day? If we are willing to do half of the job the guy did, we can still end up

Surely he is a son of a very successful and rich business person, you think. Or perhaps he robbed few of the major banks, killing a few guards, and sped away in a stolen Benz with millions. If you’re either currently unemployed and looking for job, or employed but looking for some extra money, or an entrepreneur wannabe looking out at some possible ventures, here are a list of part time jobs, freelance and home business ideas with relatively low costs you can explore and start with: 1. Teaching/Tutoring Your main responsibility will be teaching and tutoring students at a level you are competent enough to handle. The number of students can vary from 1 to a group of 10, or even more. Essentially, the more the students the more money you will cash in. The question will be how many you can handle? Depending on circumstances, the class can be done at home (either at your place or theirs) or some rented place, if the number of students are considerably big. You can also introduce yourself to the local tuition center running nearby your area. Tell them what you are good at, and tell them what students can learn from you. Who knows your expertise has been long awaited. A f
