Iphone, are we talking about a phone or what?
2007-07-02 13:37:49
I don’t really know what business you’re in, but all I expect out of a phone is to be able to make and receive phone calls, if possible with high quality sound reception, other then that it’s not a phone it’s a palmtop, Blueberry, an Ipod or whatever you wish to call it. What about this design mumbo jumbo? For Christ’s sake, it’s a phone! I can understand that aesthetics also play a role in technology, but it should not be a fundamental aspect. I feel the reason most people are purchasing this piece of technology is because of the mean looking design. Isn’t it supposed to be a phone?

Eric Schmidt speaks with Wall Street Journal technology columnist Walt Mossberg at the D5:
2007-07-01 17:19:31
Very interesting interview where Eric Schmit is confrotned with current law Suite Viacom against Google regarding Copyright. I was a bit surprised to see Eric Schmit persistently dodge from answering direct questions regarding Intellectual Property. Another thing that I found hilarious was Walt Mossberg asking why Google didn’t recruit Human editors to take care of specific search queries? Oh dear!

Avoid these 10 common SEO Mistakes
2007-06-30 14:06:06
SEO is all about following a couple of simple procedures, but above everything else, it’s about following your innate common sense. The purpose of this post is not to tell you what you should be doing, but rather what you definitely should avoid doing. 1. Too many links in a short time This is a very common mistake that even the most experienced SEOs seem make. If you are marketing a new domain, and don’t want it to get sandboxed, and believe me you DON’T, do not get too aggressive with your link building efforts. Keep your inbounds under 20 per month. 2. Do NOT attempt to hide keywords using CSS Google has automated ways of detecting this. Don’t do it, you will get caught and your site will get wiped out. It’s as simple as that. 3. Don’t buy links in the wrong places The politically correct advice would be “don’t buy links, period”. But in the real World, everyone buys links, and anyone who will tell you otherwise is in denial. At present, and despite claims othe

Threadwatch closed last night
2007-06-30 13:50:26
Very disappointing to see Threadwatch close down. The owner Aaron Wall posted some of the reasons that lead to this decision, but I can’t help it feel that regardless of the valid points he makes, there is a place in the industry for ThreadWatch. I’m curious to see what it going to happen with it. I can see many names lining up to take over the project, so it’s going to be an interesting couple of days. Thread watch was part of my daily reading routine, congrats to Aaron to keep it going for as long has he did. http://www.threadwatch.org/node/15907

The Disclosure Hypocrisy
2007-06-25 15:00:00
Now for a little rant. I finally had the opportunity of listening to Netincome’s podcast that featured randfish from SEOmoz and Shoemoney. As most of you know might already be aware by now, there was bit a little of “healthy” friction between both sides regarding a post made by shoemoney about blogger disclosure, later quoted and replied by randish. When I first read the post, I immediately thought… link bate! But apparently I was wrong . Whilst I love Shoe’s frontal approach to most issues, I admit that I was fairly surprised to see how he perceives the industry, and his perception regarding trust and confidence in business. Whilst I’m not blind to the fact that it is “all about the money”, I do believe that like in everything, that there are boundaries that should not be surpassed in order to maintain a level of integrity and trust in our readers eyes. If you’re building your business around trust, and if trust is built through impartial honest blog posts, putting

Google in Love with Wikipedia - Enough is enough
2007-06-22 15:25:02
Okay, so I find Wiki to be useful in many ways, but for gods sake Google , stop making it compete for business terms. If Wiki is a non commercial electronic knowledge base, why is it ranking for commercial terms? Why is it that when I search for Web Design Wiki is beating the crap out of my companies website, that IS in fact dedicated to ..Guess what.? Web Design. Isn’t the quality of the results in search dictated by relevancy? So how relevant is Wiki for a user that is looking searching for Web Design? What is the probability of this user looking for the meaning of the term rather then companies that offer the service? Most of the times, if I want to look for the meaning of something and want a Wiki results I’ll just add WIKI in front of the term that I am searching for. To understand this fixation of Google with wiki, take a look at Search Mash ( Google’s Search testing platform) and you will see Wiki as a default result on the right column of all your searches. It’s still a

Microsoft Surface Technology
2007-06-17 08:01:30
Just came a cross an article on Popular Mechanics about Microsoft ’s new surface technology. This is something I had not seen before. It’s not an ordinary surface display like we have seen before, with this technology the surface actually interacts with the elements that are placed on top of it. Check it out, brilliant stuff. What Pseudo Affiliate marketing coach companies don’t want you to know
2007-06-14 13:38:28
So last night I came a across a website that talked about a concept they called Bum Marketing. To sum it all up, the website claimed that they would coach Affiliate Marketing newcomers teaching them how to literally double their investment, fast and without a lot of spent. They even talk about teaching them how to achieve #1 organic position. Wait a minute… but are we talking about SEM or SEO? What a load of BS. The web is a competitive Market – You will need to invest In order to make money you will have to invest money. There is not short cut, its how business works. The more money you have to invest the more potential return you have. Don’t expect to go very far if you are not prepared to invest money. You will need a credit card Still on the same note, in order to run in an efficient manner a PPC campaign you will need a credit card. Adwords for example allows you to pay via wire transfer, but it takes more time, and Web Marketing is all about less time. Prepare your

SEO is common knowledge +5% of grey matter
2007-07-13 18:59:48
Just the other day I was recalling the infamous David Pasternak affair with a friend of mine that pretty much agrees with his points of view. In every industry there are fundamental basic procedures that are easy to follow and that don’t necessarily require a lot of technical know-how in order to get them done. SEO isn’t an exception to this. If you implement a couple of simple steps in your line of development, you will be alright, but you won’t do well. However, you must not forget that we are dealing within an industry that is in constant movement, reacting to every social, economic and financial change. Like no other media, what is today isn’t necessarily and most likely what is tomorrow. So what is this 5% of grey matter that I am referring to? This is where the professionals gain the real leverage. 5% refers to information acquired by extensive testing or privileged sources that help you gain a substantial advantage over your competitors. Now, anyone who states that SEO

Google’s Nikesh Arora about the evolution of the Internet and new business opportunities
2007-07-20 19:51:35
My friend Nikesh talks about the Internet as a Global Economical revolution at the Institute of Directors 2007 annual convention. One of the things he said that I really found curious is that all of the new successful Internet start ups always come about with two founders, Google , Youtube, Myspace, Skype, Facebook, etc… Being in an Internet start-up myself with a partner with whom I identify myself a great deal, I can totally related to that and understand how this collaboration could be beneficial to a business concept and growth.

Adwords serving ads based on the user search history data
2007-07-23 21:20:52
For all of you that are wondering why Google needs our Search History data, the obvious is now slowly becoming to reality. Adwords is begging to serve ads that are influenced by he user’s history search data. I first read this on a post by Barry Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Land Personalized AdWords Google Ads You See Influenced By Previous Searches that explains how this is being implemented. The idea is pretty simple, you do a search on Holidays, and then do a search for Portugal, the next time you search for Holidays you will be served ads of holidays in Portugal. Very slick, and this is wonderful news for advertisers since it will increase the contextuality of the ads, and consequently the conversion rates.

Google launches Webmaster Message Center
2007-07-23 17:01:16
Google has integrated a way for webmasters to be notified of eventual problems with the websites they own. I’m guessing the concept is similar to the one implemented in adsense. This might be very useful if Google actually uses the system to notify website owners of problems before they act on them. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=61504&hl=en

Why I don’t hire minors to do the work of professionals
2007-07-22 18:15:52
On a recent post at Shoemoney Blog I took some abuse because of my admitted prejudice regarding working with minors . Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against young blood in any way, so try to keep the content of this post in context please. First of all hiring minors is illegal unless one obtains a Parent/School Authorization Form legal considerations aside, I quite simply chose not to Outsource my work to minors at a professional level, because I feel it’s prejudicial to my business. Every single time that I hired young students to work for me things went sour. Either they completely disappeared, couldn’t handle constructive criticism or just weren’t able to handle the pressure. The way I see it you are not a professional until you depend on a certain activity for your livelihood. Doesn’t mean that you aren’t good at what you do, just means that you are still a couple of steps away from a more serious commitment that in the end will give me, as

Jonathan Harris’s “Universe”
2007-07-25 18:03:41
Now for something different. Jonathan Harris is releasing a new project called &ldquo ;Universe &rdquo ; that promises to explore the web through a different scope. The idea is very similar the concept applied on “We Feel Fine” but it almost scratches the surface of the Search industry as it is a more global project. Very interesting new way to approach the Information Technology.

What pisses me off about Facebook’s lawsuit for ’stealing source code’ and the ‘business plan’ from Connectu
2007-07-24 13:28:17
I know this isn’t new, but I just read the story on the NYTimes regarding he lawsuit against Facebook ’s founder Mark Zuckerberg for allegedly having stolen the design, concept and even the Business Plan from a University based Social Network - Connectu.com - while he worked there as a programmer. Now here is where the story starts to piss me off. I have heard countless times of stories of people accusing others of stealing ideas after those ideas are put into practice and have proven to be successful. The way I see it, there is no property over ideas that are not patented. Even if he did base Facebook on something that was mainly thought by Connectu, why didn’t Connectu act on the idea on the first place? This World is packed with thinkers and Sayers that don’t really contribute to progress in any way because they spend the entire day thinking, chatting and whining. An idea is worthless if no one acts on it. Thank god there are still action orientated people ou

Schedule of Papers/studies to be published
2007-07-28 20:34:29
Like someone stated before, for a blog that holds in its title “SEO experiments”, there is not a lot of that happening here lately. So I feel it’s time to announce my plans for this particular content area for the rest of the year. The publication of these Papers/studies will be conducted in a slight different manner then the content of a post. Since I am going to invest a lot of time on research and testing, I am going to take a more “institutional” approach when publishing my conclusions. By this, I mean that I will be posting the methods that I used to reach the conclusions, as well as the. I have seen this methology used in a couple of SEO experiment websites, and I feel they do such a good job in clarifying issues that otherwise are just talked without real evidence backing them up. I will be creating a separate section in sidebar, to mark a clear distinction between them and the regular post categories. Realistically, with my shortage of time it was imperative that I

Shoemoney sells AuctionAds
2007-07-28 12:42:17
Now this really surprised me. Media Wiz reached an agreement with Shoemoney and his business partner Dillsmack to sell the recently launched AuctionAds platform. Full Story: Media Whiz Aquires AuctionAds I’m not really surprised by the sale itself but by the fact that the product hadn’t reached it’s adolescence let alone maturity. One of the things I really like about Jeremy is that he is a Man that is not afraid of publicly stating his weaknesses. It’s not a very common trait to find these days, and only people who are truly confident on their abilities are able to do this without a twitch. I never saw Shoe as a “Project maintenance” kind of guy, so when first talked about the Auction Ads project I always wondered how he would do in the support side of things. Just as I thought, not only was it something that he hated doing, but it was also something that he wasn’t particularly happy to do either. All in all I think it was a good deal for

Decided to remove the “Dissecting Page Rank” from the work shedule
2007-08-03 08:28:49
I decided to remove the &ldquo ;Dissecting Page Rank&rdquo ; paper from my work plan. The reason for this is that I came across a paper that pretty much covers all aspects that I intended to approach. It’s possibly the best independent study I have seen on Page Rank. So, if one has nothing to add on a subject, why not simply shut his pie hole? Pagerank Explained Correctly with Examples by Ian Rogers

Rand Fishkin against Directory Owners, or is it the other way around?
2007-08-07 14:48:13
So I’ve been reading all about SEOMoz’s Rand Fishkin’s supposed vendetta against Web directories. In all fairness I hardly believe he has anything against Directory owners at all. He is merely expressing a point of view that is valid in many ways. To kick this off, let me just briefly state where I stand on this. I believe that whilst the sale of links through a Web Directory platform is not a very good business model, it is undeniable that they bring value to their clients, even if Rand states otherwise. Every SEO in the process of Link building submits his client’s websites to directories. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or in denial. There could be cases where this step simply isn’t needed because the SEO holds control over a Network of websites that provide him enough “link power” to discard the directory submissions process; this might be the case for Randy. A Web Directory, as product to the end user is simply worthless. Keep in mind that the own

Google ignoring Title Tag Spamming
2007-08-05 22:27:07
One of the things I love about this industry is that every day you discover people who are willing to test things out, that don’t simply take things as they are. Kuddos to them! Shaun Anderson tried to figure out how Google would treat and index a title with 50 terms inside the tag. The results were very surprising to say the least. My eyes hurt Darren - Problogger’s new Design
2007-08-10 23:35:29
I just noticed that Problogger has a new design, and dear oh dear… Is “overall ugliness” some sort of a trend right now? In the early nighties that rugged unclean look was “the look”, so I’m guessing this is cyclic. By the way thank you Davis Naylor for starting the trend with the splendrous redesign of your Blog. What’s up with this Technorati look? Is it just me or that font is just hard to read and in all fairnness, ugly as hell?

Added new features to the blog
2007-08-10 22:06:24
My very patient programmer Cody Robert added a couple of very neat features to the blog that make it more user and Search Engine friendly. I’m going to create more specific categories for the SEO posts, so things might look a bit messy until I’m done. Here is the list of stuff that was added: Nested categories divided by Groups Removed the “Category” default slang from the Home Category Links Added the Digg button Added the Word Press Poll system The K2 Nested categories features is particular valuable since K2 doesn’t offer this our of the box and I haven’t seen this work well in any other blog. In a day or two I might post the hack for anyone who is interested.
