Practicing return journey
2007-02-13 07:48:48
And this how they shall flee West Indies. Practice makes a man perfect and they are just sticking to this adage. There are reports that the Indian cricket team is also carrying 6 such ‘powered boats’ for the world cup in WI so that they can easily escape, via the sea, without attracting too much attention. The permutation and combination of occupants is currently being hotly debated in team meetings; 1. Dravid and Chappel cannot be on the same boat 2.Ganguly and Chappel should be at least 3 boats apart 3.Sachin prefers company of the old so no new chaps on his boat 4. Sreesanth’s boat might only accommodate 2 because he needs space to dance 5. Sehwag and Uthappa cannot be together because of Sehwag’s jealousy.  Other conditions include 1. Chappel needs a driver for his boat or a system so that he can drive using his laptop. The BCCI seems to have preferred the former because the technology has to come from China a

Defying all odds on valentine's day

Today there is not one but 2 piktar of the day, why? Well if you don’t know, today is valentine’s day so everyone looks for a partner..right?  Young girls, hmm..how do you make sure?, seeing valentine’s day card in Ahmedabad. It seems that the VHP has instructed its cadets not to interfere with a couple of burqa clad women, to promote certain aspects of human trait in minorities, but oppose everything which is remotely couple. 1. A man is allowed to roam with another man. 2 is a company, 3 is a pleasure, 2. Any other couple is strictly not allowed, be it even animals. Why only this day to oppose couples? Well because they are opposed to St. Valentine and the cupid and not to love. Then why do they not have their own love day? Lets say 6th December as BD Lav day! Activists getting ready to not let couples meet today. Rule 1 is being followed here. Contrasting pics, aren’t they? What does it take to be a good writer?
2007-02-17 04:36:13
This question first came to my mind when I read a paragraph in one of the job tests in early December. I have been wondering about it since then. After nearly 2 months of contemplating I am coming establishing the following beliefs without even a shadow of doubt- (GW- good writer) 1. A good writer needs a tough childhood. He/she should have been bullied as a child. GW is very emotional and sensitive as a child. A GW is someone who always feels jealous of someone’s success and translates his emotions in the form of prejudiced writing. His/her inspirations seem to have been drawn out of his frustration at not being able to bully someone else. As a child GW lacks the exuberance of a child. GW always prefers seclusion; no wonder GW has no or few friends. GW needs someone to demonize and blame all his/her woes on that ’someone’.  GW should have a tough family life so that an element of suffering is sown at childhood level. 2. When a

Let's divide India & Pakistan again
2007-02-19 16:59:47
Reuters Once again the agents of terror have carried a horrendous act of killing innocent people. 64 people have died in the blast that burnt down 2 bogies of Samjahuata Express, the faint symbol of peace between India & Pakistan . Dear Terrorist bhahiya, I wonder why do you guys indulge in such acts of inhuman killing of innocent souls who don’t even have a remotest of link to the tension that prevails between the 2 nations. What pleasure you derive from the loss of human lives? Do you like red colour of the blood? Even if you then it doesn’t imply that you keep seeing the natural occurring red coloured fluid so often. I understand your frustration at not being able to get your dictat implemented and trust me I have a master plan that will give to eternal peace. My master plan is the solution of all your woes and frustrations. Well before I begin let me introduce you to a class of mankind that has similar motives as yours and directly responsible for all you

Figure out a man in the picture
2007-02-22 16:59:49
This is an ad appearing in newspapers, a public service ad by the Delhi Police. When I first saw this picture, my immediate attention went to that auto wala in the picture. 5 years of my stay in Chennai have made me hate them to the utmost degree. They look like extortionist to me. There have been very few occasions in which I happily parted out with the money. The meters are doctored so never ever go my  meter in Chennai. Plus being non-Tamilian is a big factor, it basically multiplies the fare my 1.5 or even 2. There have been few incidents worth of a mention- 1. I was returning from Chennai Central at around 11 in the night. I thought of taking the local train back but to my surprise the local train station was already deserted. A peeing auto wala saw me, somehow managed to put everything back and approached me. After few minutes of haggling we were finally off. I figured out later that he was drunk! I froze. The ride was like a roller coaster; swaying on eithe

Selection panel chief Dilip Vengsarkar today issued a stern warning to Irfan Pathan , saying the struggling speedster would be dropped from the World Cup squad unless he proved his match fitness in Sunday’s Deodhar Trophy game in Ahmedabad. The left arm bowler had declared himself fit from his sore shoulder injury, but Vengsarkar made it clear that Pathan’s performance for West Zone against Central Zone two days from now would be watched with keen interest by the selectors. “I would be there with other selectors to watch Irfan’s overall performance and if we are not convinced of his fitness he will not go to the World Cup. We have not yet thought of any replacement, but it will be done in consultation with the captain ( Rahul Dravid ) and coach (Greg Chappell),” the former India captain said. [source] cricket, Irfan

Egyptian Blogger jailed

Abdel Karim has been jailed for blogging against Islam and the president Hosne Mubarak. Yasmin is a well articulated post critically examines the fallacy of the verdict. Amazingly, Chapter Three of the Egyptian Constitution which deals with Public Freedoms, Rights and Duties says in Article 47: “Freedom of opinion shall be guaranteed. Every individual shall have the right to express his opinion and to publicize it verbally, in writing, by photography or by other means of expression within the limits of the law. Self criticism and constructive criticism shall guarantee the safety of the national structure. “ This is exactly what Karim has done. He exercised his freedom of opinion. He took his right of expressing his opinion seriously and believed enough in it to write it on the internet in a publicly accessible blog. In my opinion Karim lived up to both his own true self and principles as well as his religion. In his Blogger profile he wrote that he was looking forward to

Paro VS Pazzo
2007-02-26 09:31:48
When a Meo marries a girl from outside Mewat, she is called ‘Paro’. It’s an epithet she has to endure all her life — especially when someone wants to taunt or harass her. “People use the word as a gaali (curse). Whenever there’s a quarrel at home, my mother-in-law uses it as a taunt to imply that I come from a bad, immoral family,” says Kuraisha Khatun, who’s been married for 14 years and has three daughters. Nevertheless, Kuraisha is instrumental in fixing marriages of three or four local men — including Rahim Khan - to girls from her native village in Chatra district, Jharkhand.   She is looked upon with distrust, and as one belonging to an immoral family Girls from eastern India have a major problem adjusting to the language and culture of Mewat. A common domestic problem recounted by all Paros: they are used to making chapattis with a roller (belan) and cooking them on tawa. But the Meos want them made with hands and

Imagine terrorists escaping from a court room in front of the police in day light. Well its totally filmi and this happens only in India! LUCKNOW : In true filmy style, two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives escaped from the crowded district and sessions court campus here, opening fire in the air, on Tuesday. The Lucknow police and Special Task Force launched a joint combing operation in the nearby Nai Basti, a congested locality, and other areas adjoining the City Station. A sub-inspector and two constables who accompanied the undertrial prisoners, Maqsood Ahmed and Mohd Saeed, from the Lucknow district jail, have been placed under suspension and a criminal case has been registered against them. They are being interrogated by the STF. The LeT operatives, both Pakistanis, were detained under the Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA), for their involvement in the 2001 attack on a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Delhi. A CRPF man was killed in the attack.

Honor killings
2007-02-27 07:11:03
A MAN killed his 17-year-old daughter for having an affair with a boy in Banwaripur village in Meerut. Kulbhusan, according to the police, was upset over the relationship and had told his daughter Rajni to stop meeting the boy. When the girl refused, he strangled her. His brother Mahendra and son Dushyant helped him dump the body. The three allegedly burnt the body to hide their crime. The Meerut police have collected Rajni’s bones from the spot and have sent them for forensic tests. According to the police, Rajni was having an affair with one Ravindra. Both of them were class 12 students at Rasna inter college. Ravindra told the police that they wanted to marry but their families were against the relationship. Kulbhusan, Ravindra alleged, tried to implicate him in the murder but later broke down before the police and confessed to the crime. “Kulbhusan’s brother and his son are absconding,” said the police. We have sent special police teams to nab the two,

A sensitive boy and the Kar Sewaks
2007-03-02 15:21:38
Winter was about to set it but the climate around Tube factory in Jamshedpur was still warm. I was playing with my brother on the veranda when mom called us inside. Doors were shut and all windows closed even though it was still not cold outside. We were pushed to the living room where Doordarshan was broadcasting news. It was quite unusual for DD to broadcast news in the evening but I soon found out why. Babri Masjid was being attacked my Kar Sewaks with unconfirmed reports that it has already been demolished. Even though at that age, 9 years, no one gives a damn about politics but I was born sensitive so was infuriated at a Masjid being demolished. Even though I didn’t know the names of RSS/VHP/BJP leaders but their continuous venomous speeches had made me realise that that they are ‘bad people’, at least for the Muslims (Fortunately Shahi Imam Bukhari was not a media darling at that time). Everyone’s eyes were fixed to the BPL TV which we bough few months ago

Short cut to Digg fame
2007-03-01 15:05:39
Digg is one of the most visited website in the world. A story on the front page can earn you 1000s of hits in minutes. Even after every effort by Digg to stop spam, people have manipulated the website to their advantage. There is a site called U/S which charges $1 per digg. Four and a half hours later, I was the only person who had dugg my story. That’s when I hired a Digg-gaming service called User/Submitter, or U/S. This enterprise, run by one or more zealously anonymous individuals, advertises that it can help “submitters” get Digg stories noticed by paying “users” to digg them. There’s a $20 sign-up fee and each digg costs $1, which gets split evenly between the service and the digger. U/S refunds money paid for any diggs the submitter doesn’t get in a 48-hour period. I put down $450 for 430 diggs, but wound up getting refunded all but roughly $100 of that. (Wired News is owned by CondéNet, which also owns Digg competitor reddit.)

Even Airtel works in Kabul
2007-03-03 08:25:08
I am already a fan of Vinod Sharma’s articles in the HT. He now describes his journey to Kabul . The Indian influence on the society is apparent. There have been reports that suggest that people are already addicted to the ‘Saas-Bahu’ Indian soaps so much so that streets are empty during the time of their broadcast, marriages are stopped and thiefs make merry stealing things from the overwhelmed Ekta Kapoor fans. All the accessories of a car was stolen in Kabul and ‘thank you kyun ki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi‘ was written on it. (kyun ki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi is a famous Indian soap which moves like a snail’s pace. Basically its an hyperbolic display of emotions which is not even remotely pragmatic. Everyone exploits an emotional fool and that’s what Ekta Kapoor specializes in). Bollywood stars are famous in Kabul with pictures of stars easily available on the streets. I wonder why India always fails to exploit these associations an

A sensitive boy and the Kar Sewaks-II
2007-03-04 07:12:10
Part 1 here My immature mind was already corrupted by this communal feeling. I often wondered if we too will meet the same fate as other Muslims who perished in the riots. My mother lost her cousin in the Bengali-Bihari riots in Bangladesh. She told me that her cousin could save her daughter as she hid her below her saari who was later rescued by the police. At least I now have a hiding place in case of emergency! The demographics are completely different in Bihar, my home state. Biharis are completely against Bengalis and this animosity has triggered riots several times. Basically this animosity is fueled by lack of education among local Biharis, which leads to unemployment among the locals, and thus Bengali, being highly educated, dominate the job market. Even though some of my best friends in school happen to be Hindus, I never talked to them about this controversial issue. I even thought that they, being children and definitely not as sensitive as me, would pay no heed to these fri

A sensitive boy and the Kar Sewaks-III
2007-03-05 16:32:45
Part 1 and Part 2 As far as I can remember the news about the Godhra incident starting flashing in the morning of February 27th. It was a period when the news channels were slowly coming up. Aaj Tak was growing great guns and so were Star News and Zee News. Doordarshan, government run channel, was pushed to the background by the private channels so that meant there were no censors in the news items. It was left to the discretion of the dudes from US/UK to decide what’s best for us. Aaj Tak got all the publicity because it was marketed as India’s own channel. So our own Aaj Tak started flashing images from the train carnage uncensored. The blame was put on Muslims as they fell to the taunts of the returning Kar Sewaks and eventually burnt the train. My first reaction to the news was my utter shock at this inhuman punishment meted out after slightest of provocations. Even though independent fact finding teams have re

What’s the solution?
2007-03-07 16:30:15
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Kanta ben, in Ahmedabad, lost her only son in the riots. She says that Muslims are not even worth keeping contact with. Firoze, a Muslim, and her son went out together but her son never returned back. Firoze has been absconding since. Ahmed bhai, in Patna, lost his son few years ago. His son went out with his Hindu friends but was later found burnt to death in a remote location. Since his death the whole family is scared and they are planning to leave India forever. A little girl, during the Gujarat pogrom, was praying that Amir Khan’s Lagaan shouldn’t win the Oscars as he is a Muslim. Muslims are accused of supporting Pakistan in sports Stories like these are so common. The bloody partition left the whole population too prejudiced against each other. Slightest of provocation cause riots. Deep down everyone’s heart lies this hatred towards the other religion. I could think of the following reasons- 1. British government

Women’s day message
2007-03-08 18:27:37
I have nothing extraordinary to say but I wonder where are we headed. I think women today rarely suffer from male dominance. They really have changed things drastically. When Britney’s hair were up for sale for a whooping $1m, I thought she is now breaking the traditional male dominance over income market. When Mandira Bedi was hired as a cricket commentators, I though the TV has just got better in the lunch breaks. She too is giving men a tough fight in the money market, she is planning to sell her ‘one time’ used saaris on ebay. But when I read this A nine-year-old Singaporean student, who did not realise she was pregnant, gave birth to a boy after it became too late for her to abort the baby. Her horrified mother found out that her daughter was six-month pregnant when she took her to a doctor for what she thought was a urine infection. By that time, it was too late for the girl to go for abortion. I wonder where are we headed! SatireShare This ---Relate
