A Hidden Danger in Electrical Systems 2007-06-26 20:51:00 Although thermography is a non-contact test, preparing for an infrared inspection of electrical equipment often requires manual preparation of switchgear components. Unwary thermographers and their assistants can be injured by making contact with cabinets or component surfaces that have become accidentally or unintentionally energized. Switchgear enclosures and components are generally designed to prevent their surfaces from becoming energized. Under certain circumstances, switchgear enclosures and other dielectric surfaces can become unintentionally energized to significant voltage levels. This potentially lethal condition may be caused by improper wiring, faulty equipment, or contamination due to dirt or moisture. The image below shows a potential of 265 volts AC between a molded case circuit breaker and ground. This condition was discovered after an unprotected worker received a shock by touching the phenolic breaker handle.Infraspection Institute Read more:Hidden

EC Wants TV Spectrum for WiMax 2007-06-14 20:52:00 Upon phaseout of Europe's analog TV signals, the freed-up UHF band could be assigned to the new wireless broadband technology UHF spectrum should be allocated to WiMax once Europe's analogue television signals are phased out, the European commissioner for information society and media has proposed. Viviane Reding made the suggestion during a broadband-related speech in Greece at the start of June. Noting that plans were already underway across Europe to open up the 2.6GHz band for mobile broadband usage, which could be WiMax or a variation of 3G, she again called the so-called digital dividend - the freeing up of spectrum brought about by the switch from analogue to digital - a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to tackle the digital divide. The spectrum in question lies between 500MHz and 800MHz. Because this is a much lower frequency range than the 2.6GHz and 5.8GHz bands currently mooted for WiMax and 3G's long-term evolution (LTE), it offers the possibility of far larger cell s Read more:Spectrum

Agreement with Huntron 2007-06-09 09:55:00 The Huntron Tracker 2700 is designed to assist in troubleshooting analog and digital circuitry. Its low voltage ranges make it ideal for testing passive devices such as capacitors while still in-circuit.The Huntron Tracker 2700 is an ideal addition to the service engineer's bench or as a compliment to a Huntron ProTrack I system. Using a power off test method known as Tracker Signature Analysis, it eliminates the risk of further circuit damage, which often occurs when power is applied.Troubleshooting ChallengesModern complex switching power supplies with fail-safe protection circuits contain many passive components that are difficult to test in circuit due to parallel solid state devices. The 200mV range of the Tracker 2700 allows resistors, capacitors and inductors to be analyzed without turning on the parallel solid state devices. The passive devices are essentially tested "out of circuit".Today's portable electronic devices use 3 volt or lower logic circuits. The low test voltage Read more:Agreement

What is electrosmog ? 2007-08-17 21:10:00 What is electrosmog ? The term electrosmog is a new word coined in the 1970s. The part of the word smog derives from the description of heavy industrial pollution of the 1950s where a mixture of smoke and fog produced horrendous choking clouds of air pollution in cities. Smog became synonymous with the grime and dirt of industrial processes. It could also be argued that modern day electrosmog describes the dirt of electromagnetic pollution. Unlike industrial pollution, electromagnetic pollution (electrosmog) is invisible and undetectable by humans. We therefore need the assistance of specialized electromagnetic sensors to help us in measuring this radiation. The radiation can be broken down into three different types: The different kinds of electrosmog: Electric alternating fields (LF)Electrical fields are generated between two poles of opposite electrical potential (voltag

Spectrum analyzer 2007-09-15 08:15:00 A spectrum analyzer is a device used to examine the spectral composition of some electrical, acoustic, or optical waveform. Often, it measures the power spectrum. There are analog and digital spectrum analyzers: An analog spectrum analyzer uses either a variable bandpass filter whose mid-frequency is automatically tuned (shifted, swept) through the range of frequencies of which the spectrum is to be measured or a superheterodyne receiver where the local oscillator is swept through a range of frequencies.A digital spectrum analyzer computes the Fast Fourier transform (FFT), a mathematical process that transforms a waveform into the components of its frequency spectrum. Some spectrum analyzers (such as Tektronix's family of "real-time spectrum analyzers") use a hybrid technique where the incoming signal is first down-converted to a lower frequency using superheterodyne techniques and then analyzed using FFT techniques.OperationUsually, a spectrum analyzer displays a power spectrum over Read more:Spectrum
