Blocking spam with Exchange Server 2003
2007-07-05 00:08:00
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 now has built-in Open Relay Filter (ORFilter) or DNS Blacklist and Realtime Blackhole List (DNSBL, RBL) capabilities, which releases us from the need to rely on 3rd party software for the spam filtering. Update - Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) was first released at the end of May 2004. Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter is a product developed by Microsoft to help companies reduce the amount of unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE), or spam, received by users. Intelligent Message Filter is based on Microsoft SmartScreen Technology from Microsoft Research. By using e-mail characteristics tracked by SmartScreen technology, Intelligent Message Filter can help determine whether each incoming e-mail message is likely to be spam. Based on this likelihood, you can choose to block e-mail m

Adding a TCP/IP Route to the Windows Routing Table
2007-07-04 23:55:00
The Routing table dictates where all packets go when they leave your system. On most environments, all packets that leave your system will be forwarded over to your router or hub, and from there out to the internet. In some circumstances, you may have a testing network configured to duplicate another environment, or you may be configuring a more complex network topology that requires the use of additional routes. Adding routes to your machine is a useful testing tool for some of thesesituations. Syntax: route ADD xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx MASK xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Means: route ADD "network" MASK "subnet mask" "gateway ip" For example, if you were on the 192.168.1.0 network, and you had a gateway on 192.168.1.12 configured to access the 10.10.10.0/24 network, you would use a route add statement like this: route ADD 10.10.10.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.12 Your routing table should now reflect that change, and all traffic to the 10.10.10.x range will now be sent over to

Setup To-Do Bar in Outlook 2007
2007-07-04 23:41:00
One of my favorite new features in Outlook 2007 is the To-Do bar, you can have quick access to your calendar as well as your task list. Unfortunately, the default setting of showing all of your tasks regardless of date can be overwhelming for anybody that has a lot of tasks, and just isn't all that helpful. One of the first things I did when I started using Outlook 2007 was to change the filter to only show the tasks for the current day, or if you want, you can also show tasks that are overdue as well. To change this setting, just right-click on the "Arranged By" column and then choose Custom from the menu. Note: You could just click the Filter button and then change the Time drop-down on the Tasks menu to "due" and the second drop-down to "today". The only problem with this is that it won't show overdue tasks, so we'll do it a different way. In this step, we'll click on the Filter button, then click the Advanced tab, then click the Field drop-down button. Choose Date/Time

Enable or Disable Auto Login in Suse Linux
2007-07-04 22:50:00
If you hate logging in every time you reboot your computer, you can easily configure Suse to automatically log you in when you start your computer. Or you can disable it if you are worried about security. Suse Linux has an amazing set of graphical administration tools that let you perform virtually any system administration task without having to use a command line. The only problem is that there are just so many settings, it's easy for new users to get lost. To get to this setting, click that green Suse "start" button, and type in user management into the search box, and select the highlighted option below. (I'm an advocate of using the search functionality as opposed to trying to find something buried in a menu. I also prefer a command line, no surprise there.) Note that if you are using KDE style menus, you can launch YaST, click Security and Users, and then click User Management. Click the Expert Options drop-down button, and select Login Settings: Now you can check or

Make Firefox Use Multiple Rows of Tabs
2007-07-04 22:40:00
If you are a Firefox power user like I am, then you probably have dozens of tabs open all the time. After trying a number of different options, I've finally settled on using multiple rows of tabs as the best option. To set this option, you must have the Tab Mix Plus extension installed. Assuming you do, open up the Tab Mix Plus options dialog via the Tools menu. Choose the Display tab/icon on the top, and then make sure you have the Tab Bar tab selected. Change the option for "When tabs don't fit width" to "Multi-row", and then check out the multiple-row goodness. Of course I don't usually browse at 600×370…

Block Third-Party Cookies in IE7
2007-07-04 22:32:00
Concerning on PC security is not so easy. Installing Antivirus, firewall, spyware is not enough. If you are worried about privacy, you'll probably be worried about 3rd party cookies. Those are the cookies placed on your computer by doubleclick and all those nefarious places. Internet Explorer makes it easy to block them. To get to this setting, go to Tools Options Privacy and then click on Advanced. Just check the box for Override automatic cookie handling, and then select Block on the Third-party cookies radio button. All done! Note: This should also work for IE6. Introducing Zimbra Collaboration Suite
2007-07-04 01:01:00
he collaboration space is getting crowded these days, with various products offering Exchange-like functionality and a few enticing extras. Among the available solutions is Zimbra, which provides a collaboration server that runs on Linux. Find out what Justin James discovered when he installed Zimbra and put it through its paces. This article is also available as a PDF download. For a detailed comparison of Exchange vs. Zimbra costs, check out this worksheet. It seems like a lot of new players are entering the "collaboration server" space lately. In a nutshell, these servers try to contain much, if not all, of the functionality of Microsoft Exchange Server, which is the baseline product in this market. Some of them introduce new features and functionality as well. Along with the already established Scalix (TechRepublic's review of Scalix can be found here), Zimbra is entering the space with a collaboration server that runs on Linux. Like Scalix, Zimbra comes in a range of editions

Announcements: Update on the Windows Ultimate Extras
2007-07-03 03:19:00
The following announcements is come from Microsoft "windowsUltimate .com" When we launched Windows Vista in January 2007, we identified Windows Ultimate Extras as a unique series of add-ons that would be available to Windows Vista Ultimate customers. To date, we have released four sets of Extras – Windows Hold’Em, 16 Language Packs for the Windows multi-language user interface, Secure Online Key Backup, and Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool. We want to let our Windows Vista Ultimate customers know that we are actively working to deliver the remaining Extras that we identified in January. Our goal is to provide the highest-quality, most secure and reliable offerings, and as a result we are continuing our work on these offerings. We apologize for taking so long to provide a status update to customers. We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in January (Windows Drea

Test Drive: the new Google Desktop for Linux
2007-07-03 03:13:00
Installation and integration The first public beta of Google Desktop for Linux is now available for download. Released yesterday, this early beta only supports a limited subset of Google Desktop functionality. Google's previous efforts to port desktop applications to Linux have been hit or miss. The current Google Desktop for Linux beta only offers search and versioning functionality and doesn't support other features like the Google sidebar or widgets, but the work done so far is very good. Unlike Picasa, which used Wine, the Google Desktop port is entirely native. I use Ubuntu, so I was able to install Google Desktop using the Deb package provided by Google. In addition to making packages available for download, Google also conveniently hosts its own package repositories for a handful of distributions. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a generic binary tarball is available at this time, so those who aren't using a supported distribution are going to have to wait

SQL injection used against Microsoft UK site
2007-07-03 03:08:00
Microsoft's UK site was hacked last week by SQL injection, a situation first reported by Zone-h. The attack consisted of inserting a rogue page with with three images, among them a boy waving a Saudi Arabian flag. Also on the page: a claim of responsibility from "rEmOtEr." Microsoft says it is investigating the incident but no real harm was done. Netcraft says the hacked site is running IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003. Apparently the UK site wasn't part of the switch to Windows Server 2008 and IIS 7. Zone-h said after the attack that rEmOtEr posted a video "which shows some proof of concepts related to SQL Injection flaws." Although the video has been taken down from its original posting spot, it apparently has found a new home on YouTube, although it's anyone's guess if it's the same video. The video supposedly shows rEmOtEr "playing with sql injections to retrieve usernames, passwords" from the UK site, but I'm not sure my eyes could make that out.

BSA announces $1 million reward for piracy snitches
2007-07-03 02:34:00
Do you work for a business that's pirating software for its own internal use? If so, you could be in for a windfall if you report it to the Business Software Alliance (BSA) in time. The BSA announced today that they are increasing their reward ceiling for accurate piracy reports to a big, fat $1,000,000. The increased reward amount is a special promotion which will be accompanied by radio and online ad campaigns; it will expire after October. After that, the reward returns to its regularly scheduled payload of $200,000. Why the big bucks? The BSA believes that $1,000,000 might make even the most timid person don the daring cape of the whistleblower. "Businesses often have a million excuses for having unlicensed software on office computers. BSA is now offering up to a million dollars for employees who turn them in," said Jenny Blank, director of enforcement for BSA, in a statement. Potential whistleblowers are often quiet for fear that they could not only lose their jobs but al

Touching masses before the iPhone arrives
2007-07-03 01:35:00
While the wait for Apple’s iPhone continues, Taiwan-based High Technology Corporation (HTC), announced the release of HTC Touch mobile phone based on the innovative TouchFLO technology. Excerpt from an article at vnunet.com Peter Chou, chief executive and president of HTC, said: “With the HTC Touch access to your most commonly used content, contacts and features is only a simple finger flick away. Mobile phone makers have done a great job of cramming ever-more exciting features into ever-smaller phones. But the way in which we access these increasingly sophisticated features has not kept pace.” Comparing it with a piece of virtual paper, Chou described the interface as “beyond simple - it’s innate”. The company, which is also the largest makers of mobiles based on Microsoft’s Windows OS, is debuting the new mobile offering with the following features: Operating System: Windows Mobile 6Hardware Configuration: 201 MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, 128MB ROMForm Factor: 3.93-

Not everyone can (or wants to) be a geek
2007-07-03 01:25:00
Geeks, particularly those of us who work in IT, are not generally tolerant of users who are not technically savvy. We have pet names for their issues (PEBCAT or ID10T errors) and tell horror stories about unplugged computers and CD-ROM coffee cup holders. However, there are plenty of users who simply do not need the level of understanding of technology that those of us in the industry possess. For every technophile in line to buy an iPhone over the weekend, there are about a dozen people who couldn’t care less about how the computer does its stuff, as long as it gets done. Durham: Don’t Look Down Upon the Technologically Clueless (Fox News) In fact, Some of the leaders in the computer industry, like the new head of NTT DoCoMo, have tremendous business acumen to make up for their technophobia. Furthermore, one of the biggest areas of development in computing is making it easy for even the biggest technophobes to use computers and other digital technologies. Biz Wiz: She Knows What Y

It’s an uber-phone aimed at digital enthusiasts who want to use their phone to have a better Internet and computing experience on the go. Of course, no one wants and needs a better mobile computing experience than business users . That’s why the iPhone could quickly spill over to have a significant impact on businesses. Many businesses and IT departments are already anticipating iPhone requests from employees. Intel working on anti-cheat technology
2007-07-02 01:52:00
It looks like Intel is working on an anti-cheat technology, though this is only a research project at the moment and hardly ready for prime time. The concept is simple. A chipset records all input from the keyboard and mouse at the hardware level. The game also does the same. If the two doesn’t match, then something else is pumping input into the game, and you are most probably ‘cheating’.The general idea here being: if something tempers with input, it should be flagged. Obviously, the game will first have to support the chipset as it will have to be the one querying the hardware in order to compare the various input streams. You can read more about it here in The Inquirer.Personally, I can immediately see some potential issues with this setup. One main problem would be with hardware or software that reads or write to the keyboard or mouse queue. I wrote a hotkey plugin for Winamp a few years ago (Winamp KeyControl) and I can just see how this anti-cheat implementation will scream

Use firewall for your security
2007-07-08 23:23:00
If you always connected to the internet to help you find something or for your work, or for just browsing, it's highly recommend to always activate your firewall, especialy if you running windows XP and don't third-party firewall software. And if you don't know what is firewall, firewall is a hardware or software device which is configured to permit, deny or proxy data through a computer network which has different levels of trust, in other case i can say that firewall is your god for security . And windows xp SP2 already built in standard firewall.Windows Firewall, previously known as Internet Connection Firewall or ICF, is a protective boundary that monitors and restricts information that travels between your computer and a network or the Internet. This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer from outside the Windows Firewall without your permission. If you're running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Windows Firewall is turned on by default

Assemble new pc with asus P5L2D2SE

Clrear windows XP virtual memory on shutdown
2007-07-07 00:37:00
What is Virtual Memory? and what is the page file? In any windows disk partition by default will exist page file, some times the file is bigger day after day. So, what is the page file for? can we delete or just not activate it? Here you will lear a litle bit about virtual memory and how to clear it when windows shuting down. Virtual memory is a program instruction on an Intel 386 or later CPU can address up to 4GB of memory, using its full 32 bits. This is normally far more than the RAM of the machine. (The 32nd exponent of 2 is exactly 4,294,967,296, or 4 GB. 32 binary digits allow the representation of 4,294,967,296 numbers — counting 0.) The page file in XP is a hidden file called pagefile.sys. It is regenerated at each boot — there is no need to include it in a backup. To see it you need to have Folder Options | View set to ‘Show Hidden and System files’, and not to ‘Hide Protected mode System files’. Just if you feel need to clear the cache or page file

Converting FAT into NTFS filesystem
2007-07-06 23:27:00
If you are running windows XP or higher version, by default the first installation will suggest you to choose NTFS file system format. If by accident your file system format is Fat or Fat32, you still able to convert into NTFS file system, here is how: Open dos command, goto START | RUN, type CMD followed ENTER; at the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS. e.g C: D: ... Z: Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.Note:I highly recommend you to backup any important data before coverting the filesystem. This tips is not for windows begginers.

Disable the Windows Automatic Update
2007-07-06 12:16:00
Just yesterday, got mail from my client, requesting some tips on how to disable the windows automatic update. I'm asking to him "why should you disable the automatic update?" I told him that it's not recommended to disable it windows automatic update, event its posible to do that. The most probably reason is because he don't have product license, well i don't care about the reason. I decide to help him.It turns out to be pretty easy. Courtesy of Coding Horror are two ways: you can either use the command line to shut off the Automatic Update s service or manually shut it off in the Services panel. To shut it off manually:Go to Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools and double-click on Services.Right-click on Automatic Updates and select Stop.To use the command line:1. Go to Start->Run. Type in "cmd" without quotes to open up the command line.2. Now, type in "net stop wuauserv" without quotes and hit Enter.

DSNless Connection Code Sample
2007-07-06 03:41:00
If you have a secure folder on your server, you may want to avoid using DSN because it's a little bit slower. I've set my data folder to be "secure". This means, the folder has full permissions for the asp engine context, but no permissions for the visitors. Let's create the connection and recodset objects now. First way to define where your database is to use relative location by utilizing Server.MapPath method. You may want to define your physical database location. You should always use the physical location if you can. After defining the location, it's time to connect to the database and get the records! As a sample, I've defined two re-usable functions for opening and closing the connections. Of course, there are much better ways depending on the functional needs of your application, but you can still use the following code. You may execute an SQL statement to get your recordset filled: I hope this sample gives you a quic
