From The Funny File... 2007-07-11 06:07:00 Ah, English...Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I Read more:Funny

Spinning Wildly - Review #4 2007-07-13 07:52:00 Yay, another great review! Nancy Lindley-Gauthier at The Long & Short Of It had this to say..."Spinning Wildly by Elle Frederix is a quick and fun dash into an intriguing romance, a romance that is far less simple than it sounds.Cosmic payback in the form of a blob of mustard has to be the most original description and conveys with it (who would have guessed) a wealth of emotion, that no matter how improbable it sounds, the reader will empathize with this main character. We've all been in Mrs.Dempsey's shoes at one time or another. This story wastes no time, but leaps from minor personal embarrassment right to the fantasy man, leaving poor Mrs. D filled with the desperate desire to suffer short term memory loss. This short story is frank and funny light and a definitely twisty storyline. Romance becomes as much a spinning vortex as ever one finds in an amusement park ride. Climb on for spin!"Have you bought yourself a copy yet? If not, you can do so HERE!
Have You Noticed? 2007-07-18 08:04:00 So, I haven’t been on my fave forum or doing a lot of blog hopping these days. If I haven’t been hitting your blog as much as I used to, please don’t take it personally! Here’s the deal. I’m trying to get my current WIP done by the end of the month, AND I’m trying to use my time a bit more wisely. I squeeze my writing in around a busy full time job, family, and lots of commitments. Something had to give.Once I figure out a little blog hopping schedule, I’ll be poking my head in your door on a regular basis again!
Any X-Philes Out There? 2007-07-16 16:55:00 The Truth is out there, but are you still there? Do you still care? And is this really the truth? After all, we’ve heard it several times before. What Truth, you ask?Second "X-Files" Pic Moving Toward Production... "The "X-Files" film sequel is heating up. Co-star David Duchovny indicated Saturday during theTelevision Critics Association press tour that the film, which has been the subject of speculation for the past few years, is one step closer to becoming a reality."I'm supposed to see a script next week," Duchovny said at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, adding that creator Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz wrote the screenplay and that Carter is set to direct." ...I watched the X-Files from the very first episode. And since I’m not much of a TV watcher, that’s saying something. This was one of the most brilliant shows ever, IMHO. It got better and better, and then, well, it got worse and worse. It was sad to see its decline. Will I go see the new movie? You betcha! (Assumi

Thursday Thirteen #18 2007-07-19 05:39:00 Thirteen Facts About Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This was fun to do. I've lived in Toronto or its suburbs all my life and I didn't know some of this stuff.1) According to the UN, Toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto2) More than 100 languages are spoken throughout Toronto3) 2.5 million people live in Toronto proper, while 5.5 million live in the Greater Toronto Area.4) Toronto is North America's 5th-largest city after Mexico City, New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.5) Toronto's public transit system is the second largest in North America—after New York City--and has the highest per capita ridership rate on the continent.6) Toronto has the busiest highway in the world with volumes surpassing an average of 500,000 vehicles per day in some sections of Toronto. We also have the widest, unrestricted free-flow highway, at 18 lanes (22 including restricted). Note – Texas has a 26 lane highway, but it isn’t free-flow, so ther Read more:Thursday

I Guess She Forgave Him! 2007-07-23 06:06:00 James Blunt Sells His Sister on eBay...."Singer James Blunt has revealed, again, that he once sold his sister, Emily, on the internet. "The stupidest thing I've ever sold is my sister, on eBay," Blunt has told GQ magazine. "I was waiting for my first album to come out and ended up selling pretty much everything I owned on eBay. I had a mild addiction."Blunt first mentioned the story when promoting his million-selling debut album, Back to Bedlam. Now back promoting his sophomore effort, he's at it again. For those of you haven't yet heard it, here he is describing the time he sold his sister - to a stranger - on an online auction site."Anyway, I came back to the flat where my sister was staying and she was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. The planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season and there were no trains. I ended up whacking it on eBay: 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armour! How Stressed Are You? 2007-07-26 07:22:00 Hey gang! No time for TT today, but how about a little stress test? The pictures attached are used to test the level of stress a person can handle. One teacher said, "I felt like they were all moving...but slowly. Kind of like, they were breathing." The slower the pictures move, the better your ability of handling stress. Alleged criminals that were tested see them spinning around madly; however, senior citizens and kids see them standing still. FYI ... None of these images are animated - they are perfectly static! (You'll have to click the pics and make them bigger. It doesn't work so well with the smaller pic here.) They do a gentle "breathing" thing for me too. How about you? Do you have a criminal mind, or are you just stressed to the max?

I thought this would be a great idea for TT, then nearly heaved when I was doing it. Proceed with caution! 1) Huhu grubs (larva) - New Zealand. Huhu grubs can be easily found in rotting logs and are a major factor in decay. Grubs take two to three years to mature and emerge as nocturnal beetles in spring and summer.2) Baalut - Philippines. You take a fertilized duck or chicken egg, bury it in the ground for a few weeks and then enjoy. A duck egg containing a half-formed duckling (complete with partially formed feathers, feet, eyeballs, and blood vessels showing through the translucent skin) soft-boiled and eaten out of shell with a spoon.3) Monkey Toes - Indonesia. Deep fried monkey toes, eaten off the bone.4) Squirrel Brain – Southern U.S. You cook the head with the rest of the body then, using your fingers and a fork, you crack the skull open and dig the brain out. 5) Salo – Ukr Read more:Thursday

Let’s Talk - Without Words 2007-08-01 05:20:00 Not too long ago, someone on one of the forums I frequent mentioned she had a difficult time expressing emotion using body language. (In the context of writing, of course)As a writer, with the constant “show, don’t tell” refrain echoing in our heads, being able to show how a character is feeling is extremely important. Using non-verbal communication to show our characters moods is a great start.I’m a people watcher. Always have been, always will be. I find body language fascinating. You can sit in your car and watch a person on the street, or in the car next to you, carry on a conversation on their cell phone or with a companion. You don’t need to hear words to gauge their emotions. It’s played out for you with their face, their eyes, hands, arms, etc. So, here are a few examples of body language and their interpretation.Arms crossed over chest – DefensiveAn open palm – Sincerity, OpennessRubbing the back of your neck – FrustrationStroking your chin – Evaluati Read more:Words
