Each of us has felt that moment when we feel as one with the beauty around us.
It is a moment of sheer inspiration that we wish would last forever.
This can also happen as we create.
We lose control and something larger than ourselves takes over.
The colors sing, the words flow, the music sings, we feel alive and our work feels alive.
We need however to be able to distance ourselves from the world at that moment.
This beautiful strength, this beautiful power that lifts our work is of the spirit and the world can quickly dull it’s majesty and power.
Allowing ourselves some moments each day when we separate from the immediate needs of our world is a great way to begin to discover this creative beauty.

Solitude 2006-12-01 00:28:11
Having a break from my painting has taken me back to earlier memories.
Here is a poem about summer where I was brought up in the South of New Zealand
Feeling of solitude,
strange and entrancing,
the summer’s sun on wind driven day,
dry grasses crackling,
on stalks tall and tender, reflecting sun’s rays,
as they quiver and sway.
A lazy stream meanders her way,
into the river and down to the bay.
where nonchalent waves,
play with the shore.
Shining, transparent,
they dance over the floor,
under the sun,
merciless, raw,
in a blue seated sky
of infinite depth.
Hazy hills hide behind heat,
black rocks merge into gray,
warm, dusy roads,
fade into distances,
deceptive,
another harsh summer’s day.
Now I am actually starting to have an understanding of this power and beauty I once just experienced.
Time teaches such valuable lessons.

When I take time out from a creative run it is a time of integration on many levels.
For me the process of creation has its own momentum, own energy. It leads forward at its own pace.
By stopping and reflecting I have time to clarify this direction.
Already during this short break I am seeing earlier creative works in relation to the understandings I have been clarifying in my current body of work.
Here is a poem written in my earlier turbulent years that I had overlooked but since my latest body of work now see in a new light.
Change
Its funny how you know sometimes.
I was sitting alone,
listening to the rhythm of my life,
when suddenly,
a fog floated from my mind,
and I knew there would be change.
My mind had been a tangled web,
a maze of overgrown waterplants,
caught in a stagnant pool.
It was as if a flow of fresh water,
surged through my head,
and I felt with clarity,
a new beginning,
fresh and crystal clear.
A mountain stream,
flowing from snowy pastures,
over silver tinted roc Read more:Discovery

Moment of Dreams 2006-12-06 07:21:37
Another poem I wrote, this time when young.
However it still creates in me poignant feelings and I cherish now the words that were penned as an emotive outburst.
As creative artists we need to honour our inspiration, allow it to flow and trust it will take up forward.
Once you were there.
In a meadow, alive with red poppies
and golden butterflies,
I sensed you.
The sky was saultry blue
and midst its brassiness
you lingered.
I lay as still as death amidst that grass
and you lingering in your distant heaven,
shared your peace with me.
The willows wavered in a sudden breeze,
but beneath where I lay was still,
so still,
I could sense your presence.
Another day you danced
above the sea.
Wind blew in my face,
I did not sense you for a while,
the air was too full of life.
But suddenly as if from beneath a cloud,
you were there.
Alive with vitality,
you spread it to all.
How I loved you.
Life and you,
alone in a sautry sky,
above a meadow or the sea,
alone, together,
until death or anot Read more:Moment

A Creative Act 2006-12-07 08:53:59
A creative act creates healing. It is the opposite of destruction.
During my many years as an art teacher of children of all nationalities, I found they preferred to create rather than destroy.
If a child was distressed and destructive turning that uncontrolled energy into the gentle energy of creation dissipated the anger.
The process of creating is healing for us all.
None of us in our frantic unfair world can be completely free of negative emotions, but by using these to create new beginning, new concepts, new paintings, new music, new books we can add to the healing of our world rather than the destruction.
The more we learn to use our creativity to create change the faster our world will change and become all it was meant to be.

You Can Begin 2006-12-10 23:41:47
`Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.’ Johann Wolfgang von GoetheCreativity is about beginning.
Getting out the paper, laying out the paints, creating that first mark on the page.
Once we start the act of creating something happens for us.
What was previously something unformed becomes a reality for ourselves and others.
Beethoven was deaf at the end of his career when he composed some of his most powerful music.
He could still hear the beauty inside his head and by writing down his music it became the world’s beauty.
Unless you try how do you know what you have the potential to create.
Each of us has a vision. It may seem a little daunting to compare it to a masters, but it has it’s own beauty and by it’s conception adds to the richness of the larger tapestry that makes up the human experience.

About Peace 2006-12-14 07:37:40
`It is humility that makes men as angels.’ Saint Augustine
As one’s creative work evolves it is the message not the messenger that is of importance.
I remember my dreams at Art School of being a recognised artist.
But although with effort I succeeded in graduating I really did not have an understanding of what I was saying at that time in my life.
As my creative journey evolved I seemed always to be being sent difficult lessons.
Yes they were harsh, yes they were hard and many times I would wonder where the next penny would come from or if anyone would listen to what I was trying to say.
It was the dark valleys that actually started to lift my understanding of creativity.
There were the heady moments of recognition, newspaper articles, flowers and accolades at exhibitions, but these were not `the moments of light’.
The moments of light came as I climbed out of the dark valleys and discovered there was light I could access on the other side.

A Rising Sun 2006-12-17 22:24:53
`My sun sets to rise again.’ Robert Browning
When the inspiration is slow in coming it is time to let your sun set.
Their is a rhythmn to your creative flow and it is just as precious to have the sunset as the sunrise.
I am looking forward to some time in New Zealand over Christmas and know I will come back ready to start a new body of work.
I remember during my years at art school I perceived a rhythmn in the flow of images produced each year, and the same moments of full sun and darkness have occurred in my painting career.
Yet from each time of darkness the day has emerged with a new strength.
And each new day has shown me an understanding of how the shadows lead to images with stronger definition.
We each need to go through our own nights for our creativity to blossom forth with its own fresh days.
Already I am looking forward to that wonderful spirit of new beginnings that a new year brings for each of us.

Joy of Solitude 2006-12-21 08:10:15
`One can be instructed in society, one is inspired only in solitude.’ Goethe.
The inspiration of creativity is a moment between the artist and their creation.
The beautiful music notated, the words penned, the canvas painted may be shared by many, but the inspiration flows for the artist in solitude.
The craving of many artists for times of solitude is often difficult for those around them to understand.
I know that my own need for solitude started early. My family owned a small cottage by the sea. My sisters would enjoy the time at the cottage reading, sewing or knitting round the wood fire, but I would disappear for long walks by the sea.
Beaches in the south of New Zealand in my childhood were very solitary and the sheer beauty of this solitude called to me.
I loved these moments alone on what seemed such vast, wild beaches for the feeling of strength and peace their solitude created in me.
The power and inspiration of these moments gave strength for later images.

The Mystery 2006-12-27 19:18:02
`Nothing is worth more than this day.’ Goethe.
Sometime during the process of creation an artist will feel at one with their creation.
This moment makes the artist feel unified in time with something beyond themselves.
Nothing feels more powerful at that moment than the creation being spoken, written, sung or painted.
These moments open the door to an understanding of the mystery that surrounds us all, the mystery that surrounds great religions, the mystery of our world.
Prophets and artist have touched on this mystery over the centuries and opened the eyes of cultures to a knowledge we are part of something greater.
Goethe that wonderful poet had an understanding of this mystery when he penned the words,
`A person places themselves on a level with the ones they praise.’
As we contemplate each day and the power and potential it brings let us also consider the great power of the mystery that inspires our creativity.

Creative Tide 2006-12-31 04:52:45
`Love is a fruit in season at all times and within reach of every hand.’ Mother Teresa
Creativity overflows at different times in our lives.
It is not a linear process and will ebb and flow like the tide.
What the artist does is to learn to work with this ebb and flow.
Sometimes it will be a gentle flow, sometimes the strength of a storm, but always the tide will rise and fall within the strength of the current.
Always our creativity is there for us to access it is just a matter of discovering the clear water, staying away from the storm debris and allowing the current to surge forward.
When the day feels dark and stormy, the water too cold and black to enter, the knowledge that Ãt is all part of the gentle ebb and flow of each day’s tide will give us the courage to once again find our own creative flow.
Once more we will be able to take the risk, to enter the murky waters and discover the gentle rhythm that soothes and heals.
That gentle rhythm that lies behind each cr
Seeing Beauty 2007-01-04 06:11:19
`The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone.’ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
To maintain one’s artistic integrity it is often necessary to walk alone.
One can enter most art shops or galleries and see works that closely resemble works already seen.
These works may be accomplished and beautiful but they are not necessarily inspired.
When we hear a song, see a painting, read a poem that has a true inspiration it takes us to a new place.
We will have our horizons extended and gain a new connection with `the mystery’ that underlies creation.
It can often be an isolated experience for artist’s who are prepared to walk this path.
Most viewers of art are comfortable within certain zones and feel discomfort when taken beyond those boundaries.
Look for example at the work of Van Gogh. His art was not recognized during his lifetime as his work sat outside the comfortable boundaries of his era. People in that period were more comfortable with a tighter range of emot Read more:Seeing

Beginnings 2007-01-08 06:38:11
`The future is always beginning now.’ Mark Strand
Creativity is about beginnings, not endings. It is the force that continues always to begin new concepts, new ideas, new hopes, new aspirations.
When we start a new creative work it is about opening doors to a new part of ourselves and sharing this discovery with the world.
To see creativity as finite is not about understanding the depth of the power that leads us to create.
To stay in touch with your own creativity keeps you alive and flowing. Allows the doors to remain open in your life
There is a beautiful old saying that says that where flowers grow there is hope.
Creativity is like these flowers.
Where there is creativity the doors are still open to life, to flow, to that beautiful mystery that surrounds us all.

The Mystery 2007-01-10 06:44:54
`Until the day breaks and the shadows flee I will go to the mountain of myrrh and the hill of incense’. Song of Songs

I am looking forward to a new body of work that expresses my understandings of the mystery that is creativity.
The work on this blog is a large painting from a transitional series I was working on a few years back.
This series involved large works that my circumstances did not enable me to paint during the last few years.
Now I am on the move again and the first thing on my agenda is to find a new home where I can have a studio where I feel free to experiment with paint and larger surfaces.

`To go out with the setting sun on an empty beach is to truly embrace your solitude.’ Jeanne Moreau
I am truely looking forward to a productive year.
Am yet to begin a new body of work for the year as am focusing on getting my apartment sold and finding a new home that will be a place where I can work.
Went for a walk on the beach this evening to clear my head and make decisions.
Usually the beach is somewhere I find peace and tranquility, but is still holiday season and tonight my stretch of beach was full of people throwing balls or just finding cool sea breezes after a hot day.
Returned feeling restless to find the street full of noisy voices and music as holiday makers partied on balconies.
Not the right atmosphere to find inspiration or the clarity of mind required for decision making.
Tomorrow I hope will be a new day where a peaceful mind arrives with greater ease.

Without that silence my creativity seems to shut down.
Thought today would be better but there are still issues with the selling of my home that are making me feel unsettled. and silence is not present..
Love Mother Teresa’s quote on silence but today my ability to express an image expressing such a state of mind has gone.
But peace does come in waves and know that once I resolve the issues happening around me it will return.
Always when I feel these restless feelings there are issues I need to resolve.
