New Kanye Video: "Stronger"
2007-06-28 09:10:00
Great song, great video. I'll be surprised if this isn't a hit. It's just sad that after it gets big, a lot of people will hear Daft Punk's "Harder Better Faster Stronger" and say "Hey, they sampled from that Kanye West song!" Oh well. At least "Stronger"'s a good song. Here's the video on Dailymotion:Kanye West - StrongerUploaded by Petitprince13(If you can't hear the audio at first, click the volume control even if it says it's not on mute. Dailymotion is fucked up like that.)

New Winehouse Video: "Tears Dry On Their Own"
2007-06-26 17:40:00
I enjoy this song, but when Amy makes videos, she might as well wear a sign that says "I'm only here because my record company made me". Her people are getting smarter though, because this video is loaded with more color than usual to distract from how totally apathetic and not-fuck-giving she is. And by the way, I'm sad about the backlash going on. Half the comments on this video on Youtube are "I'm sick of hearing about this bitch". Don't get me wrong, I love the bitch, but NO ONE is as amazingly perfectly talented as the press is making her out to be. At least she's taking a break. She already said that she's done with music until she gets as inspired as she was for Back to Black, which is sad, but it's a great attitude for a musician to have. Don't worry, as soon as her and her husband are both sober at the same time, they'll have a big ugly divorce and it'll give her an album's worth of material to work with.

Wow. It's really happening. I don't know why I didn't believe it before, but it's definitely happening. Here's the highest-quality vid I could find of the performance. I actually clapped a little when Gwen said "SURPRISE!". Don't judge.

Playlist for fans of The Gossip
2007-06-25 09:20:00
New feature! This thing was a bitch to put together (Damn you fileden.com and projectplaylist.com!), so you people better appreciate it. Powered by Podbean.com 1) Scissor Sisters: "Tits on the Radio"Ana Matronic takes over lead vocals for this track from Jake and Co's self-titled debut album. It was never a single (Probably because they can't get US radio to play a song with that title), but it's always been one of their best songs. The unforgettable bassline gives it a feel like TG's "Listen Up".2) The Black Keys: "Your Touch"Anyone who appreciated the chilling, slow-burning soul of "Night" can get into TBK's stripped-down blues sound.3) Noisettes: "Sister Rosetta (Capture the Spirit)"One of the best free tracks iTunes has ever offered, and one of the most aggressively addictive pop-rock songs of '07. "No No No" would be proud.4) The Clash: "Police on My Back"A punk rock outburst in the same league as "Standing in the Way of Control".5) The Sounds: "Dance With Me"New wa

New Summer music videos: M.I.A. and more
2007-06-22 09:26:00
M.I.A. is ridiculous, which is why I love her. I need to go find that track that she did with Timbaland that fell off of "Shock Value". This is from her new album "Kala". Click play and stare at it.New from Justin Timberlake. As much as I don't like him (I'm tired, so I won't go into the "he's nothing without good writers and producers" thing), I still gotta say that this new vid for "Lovestoned" is mostly great. It's amazing while he's doing the Sexyback thing with all the crazy special effects, but it falls apart as soon as it turns serious in the last two minutes. Actually, the serious part is pretty terrible. For God's sake Timberlake, just be pretty and dance and let Timbaland do the work for you, because you really can't do serious. If I ever decide to become a pop star even though I have no talent, I want Rihanna's producer. Seriously, she has the voice of a robot, and yet these producers still get great pop songs out of her once a year (dumber than a box of hair, but s

I will never forgive Nas for this
2007-06-21 09:16:00
Nas has collaborated with... Posh Spice. Yes, one of the greatest rappers alive has just made a song with a Spice Girl, according to Dlisted. Michael K. says this was made this summer, but some people say this was from two years ago. I'm too disgusted to research and find out which. It's not even great trash like "Milkshake" or even entertaining trash like the Pussy(cat)Dolls. It's just pointless, watered-down, stupid trash. For now, I'm going to refuse to believe that's really Nas in the background and pretend like this Godawful trainwreck ever happened. It's called "Full Stop". Give it a listen if you hate yourself today.Since it's my job to bring you good music, I'll post a Nas-featured track that doesn't suck. This is "Blindfold Me" by Kelis. It falls in the category of "awesome trash".

B-Sides: Liz Phair's "Black Market White Baby Dealer"
2007-06-20 09:24:00
I spent an hour trying to find out where to download this track based on the title alone. It's not on torrents, Google and Alta Vista couldn't find it, and then i gave up and randomly typed in "girlysound.com" and the download link was the first link on the page. God. Anyway, I've heard so much about the Girlysound demos, and now I know why. Yeah, the audio quality is shit, but Liz's lyrics are some of the funniest and most original I've ever heard. Keep in mind that this was made around the early 90s, long before Angelina Jolie turned buying Asian and African babies into a trend. I promise you that after you listen to this you'll have "My black market white baby dealer/Brings clean fresh white babies to me" stuck in your hand for the rest of the day.

Remixes: Peter Rauhofer takes on "Hella Good"
2007-06-19 14:58:00
This one's long, but it's worth it if you liked the original. Rauhofer is the best at making extended mixes that don't feel like they drag on forever (see: his take on "Sexyback"), and this one's no exception. But if you don't have much time, skip the first two minutes and enjoy the adrenaline-filled "lets-just-feelin-hella-good" vocal loop that's surprisingly cool to listen to.

Covers (Jay Brannan): The Hillarious and Ironic Bastardization of Hip Hop, Part 2
2007-06-18 12:09:00
OK, so we know I love Jenny Owen Young's ironic and hillarious pop-folk acoustic cover of "Hot in Herre":That's been on the RG Myspace page for months now. Now, another intentionally hillrious and ironic bastardization of hip hop music: Jay Brannan's Nina Gordon-style cover of "Straight Outta Compton". This video is the best reason why he's replaced Jake Shears as my imaginary boyfriend. Plus, the rap verse he does is the funniest thing I've heard in weeks.

Random track of the Day: Garbage (again)
2007-06-15 14:28:00
Unpopular opinion time: I didn't hate "Beatifulgarbage". I actually loved it. It sucks that nobody bought it because most of their main fanbase couldn't deal with how eclectic and experimental it was and only wanted more retreads of "Only Happy When It Rains". "Beatifulgarbage was actually a great album though, and "Silence is Golden" was one of their best songs ever. The last minute and a half is amazing and why I love Shirley Manson.

Remixes: "Gimme Shelter" instrumental remix
2007-06-14 12:12:00
I love Rolling Stones' original songs, and lately I've been finding a lot of not-quite-as-good-but-still-really-cool takes on their work. Yesterday was the electronic cover of "Paint it Black", and today is the (mostly) instrumental remix of "Gimme Shelter ". Good stuff, especially for remixers looking for mashup material.powered by ODEO

Covers: "Paint It Black" goes French electro chill
2007-06-13 11:00:00
Found this on iTunes last week. Claude Challe put together a collaborative electro-chill album called "Spacesex", and I'm surprised by how much I like it. I'm not gonna spend $10 on it, but I will listen to the full album stream on iMeem every once in a while. The one really buy-worthy song on the album is Sixth Finger's cover of "Paint It Black ". It's the complete opposite of the original and it still works. I never really noticed how good that songs lyrics were until they were slowed down on this track. And also? The album art is amazing. Here's the Paint it Black:Here's the full album stream:

More new White Stripes: "Rag and Bone"
2007-06-11 17:45:00
Another new track from Icky Thump. It's called "Rag and Bone" and it's easily the most bizzare song of 2007. I don't know what to think about it yet, but it's good to know that Jack White is still able to surprise us four albums later.

Mark Ronson's "Version" Part Two: Tracks 6-11
2007-06-10 16:48:00
Track 6: Maximo Park's "Apply Some Pressure"The Original: Addictive British rock song from 2005Mark Ronson's version: Almost identical to the original. The only difference is that guitars are replaced with layers of horns. Everything else is the same; Ronson even used Maximo Park's vocals. It's still a fun song, but just for being so lazy and unambitious with the cover, C-.Track 7: The Jam's "Pretty Green" (audio not available)The original: Bizarre early 80s Smiths-ish punk. The lyrics are so dumb and bizarre that to me it sounds like the "Hollaback Girl" of British New Wave.Mark Ronson's "Version": A demented little pop song with vocals by Santo Gold. I don't even know how to describe. I'll try anyway... if there was a nightclub on Sesame Street, this is what they would play. I don't know. It's a funny song at first, but once the novelty wears off, it gets annyoing and old quickley. D.Track 8: Radiohead's "Just"The Original: A near-perfect alt-rock song that's exactly half

Mark Ronson's "Version" Part One: Tracks 1-5
2007-06-09 10:05:00
OK, so I listened to Mark Ronson's new album "Version" for the first time this week (it'll be released in the US next Tuesday). I'm totally fascinated by cross-genre covers, so for me this was easily the most interesting album I've heard in over a year. It gives me so much shit to talk about, it won't fit into one post. Let's start from the beginning.Track One: Coldplay's "God Put A Smile On Your Face"The Original: A nice, calming, alt-rock indie hit from Coldplay's second album.Mark Ronson's version: A wild soul-rock instrumental that's so much fun that I didn't even notice there were no vocals until two minutes into it. A-Track Two: Kaiser Chief's "Oh My God"The Original: A song that should/would have been a Brit indie classic if it hadn't been overshadowed by "I Predict a Riot"Mark Ronson's Version: An alt-pop song with Lily Allen on vocals. Impressive because they made it sound like it was originally by Lily Allen, but it's missing the original's insanely exciting b

Covers: The Gossip does Aaliyah
2007-06-08 08:20:00
Unfortunately, we'll probably never see Timbaland produce for The Gossip (even though it would probably rock judging by what he did for The Hives and She Wants Revenege), so the closest we'll ever get is seeing The Gossip cover a song that Timbaland originally produced. It's a really cool cover. The strength of Beth's voice makes up for stripping away all of the original's Timbo-production. I never expected someone as indie as Beth Ditto to cover Top 40, even if the original was actually good.

GODDAMMIT
2007-06-07 09:24:00
Paris Hilton has been released from jail after FIVE FUCKING DAYS. She's now under house arrest, which isn't really a punishment when your house is worth more money than the net worth of most small countries. The worst part that makes me the most angry is that I'm not even that surprised. I could waste my time and spend 50 lines on why this is disgusting, but for what? You all know why this is ridiculous, you don't need me to remind you.The only way I can close this is to post a vid of The Great Ragan Fox tearing into Kathy Hilton for calling going to jail for breaking the law "disgusting":

New music from CRS
2007-06-06 21:13:00
Here's another thing to file under "I can't believe I didn't know this until this week". Around the time the "Can't Tell Me Nothing" mixtape started circulating, news came out that Kanye, Pharell, and Lupe Fiasco are starting a group called CRS as a side project. CRS may or may not stand for "Chicago Runs Shit". I haven't read any official confirmation of that, but that's the most common explanation (even though Pharrell is from the east coast, but whatever). This can't not be good; Lupe is great lyrically, Kanye is great vocally, and Pharrell is great productionally(?), even though I haven't forgiven him for "Wind it Up" yet. They're already off to a good start; "Us Placers", the first song put out by them, is really good. It samples Thom Yorke's "Eraser", not just the instrumentals but some of Yorke's vocals, which is a really bizarre choice for a hip hop track, but it totally works for some reason. Listen. Now.

Stereophonics: "Bank Holiday Monday" and "Pull the Pin" preview
2007-06-05 09:57:00
Stereophonics released their new single "Bank Holiday Monday " (from upcoming album "Pull the Pin") on Myspace. I was expecting to be disappointed because of how boring the title sounded, but I was wrong. It's one of my favorite songs so far this year. The vibe isn't as angry as most of "Language Sex Violence Other" (one of the best rock albums of 2005), but it still has all of LSVO's wild energy. I sort of forgot they were my second favorite band for a while (Don't worry Kelly Jones, you'll be #1 after Jack White jumps the shark), but this song brought it all back to me.Also, on Youtube, there is a video of previews of EVERY SONG on "Pull the Pin", which won't be released until some time in October. In addition to hearing small pieces of all the new songs, you get to her Kelly Jones himself explain the origins of the songs.

Random Track of the Day: Paolo Nutini
2007-06-04 11:55:00
I never really liked Paolo Nutini, because I thought "New Shoes" (his biggest single in the US) was crap. Seriously, it's one of the most boring songs I've ever heard, and I'm going to stand by that. However, my friend who's a fan of Paolo recently practically bitchslapped me into giving him a second chance. I tried listening to "Jenny Don't Be Hasty", which I'm pretty sure was a semi-successful single in the UK. I really love it. Maybe I like it better because it's about shit that actually matters (being in love with someone who won't be with you because of age difference) instead of LIKING YOUR NEW SHOES. I'll never understand what he was thinking with that one, but anyway, the point is, he actually does have some songs I really like, and here's one. New feature for all audio postings: a "For fans of" tag, to help speedreaders of the blog skip what they're not into. For fans of: Razorlight, Lily Allen, Mika, Scissor Sisters, Ryan Adams, Sandi Thom, Tegan and Sara

Live music: Von Bondies
2007-06-04 08:45:00
I love the Von Bondies. "C'Mon C'Mon" is a great song and all, but they deserve to be so much more than just "those guys that did that song on Rescue Me's opening credits". They're an amazing rock band, and my favorite song by them right now is a live performance of "It Came From Japan", which came from their Jack White-produced first album "Lack of Communication". I actually like the live version better: the tempo is a little higher and it's a little more "rock". The live version is from the live album "Raw and Rare".

More Kanye: Clip of "Stronger" from new album
2007-06-01 11:21:00
Any doubt I had about "Graduation" is gone. About five minutes after my last post, I found the clip of "Stronger", and I feel dumb for not knowing about it. But here it is, and it's amazing. There's been a lot of bitching about how unoriginal he is for sampling Daft Punk (the beat from Harder Better Faster Stronger is used), and how he samples too much, blah blah blah, but I don't mind it here. Kanye 's shown enough creativity with his lyrics to coast on beat production every once in a while. Here, some smart person remixed the sample into the middle of the original "Harder Better Faster Stronger". Good stuff.

Playlist for Fans of Imogen Heap
2007-06-29 13:11:00
Imogen has a lot of things that set her apart from other artists. "Hide and Seek" proved that she can produce powerful music with minimal production, which Damien Rice, Susanne Jakobsen, and Regina Spektor accomplish on a regular basis. Sia, Jem, The Good the Bad and the Queen, Blonde Redhead, and Zero 7 share her ability to take elements of electronica normally considered cold and turn them into something much more deep. And Bjork, like Imogen, is another overseas import that's a little left of center and doesn't always make sense, but turns out amazing work despite the fact she's probably crazy. Powered by Podbean.comAnd before I end this post, I wanna give a massive thanks to Susanne Jakobsen, the nicest artist I've ever had the chance to talk with on Myspace, for all her help in getting her MP3s available for download. You can go to http://myspace.com/susannejakobsen to hear more of her work.

Courtney Love's New Song
2007-07-05 17:34:00
I love Courtney Love. I need business cards that have my name with the title "Eternal Defender of The Courtney Love ". I give no fucks about the crazy bullshit in her personal life, because the woman can rock. She's amazing songwriter and I'm ready for her new album. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't love her first solo album, but I'm predicting that the second is going to be a huge creative comeback for her. The first song from her next album "Nobody's Daughter" (released late 2007, no official date yet) to show up on the internet is "Dirty Girls". It's definitely a step in the right direction. It doesn't have a hook, so it's all about the writing and all about the lyrics. "Live Through This" was like that too, but she doesn't sound like she's falling back on her old sound. I didn't love it at first, but the more I listen to it the more I respect it.

Random Track of the Day: "Penthouse Hell"
2007-07-03 15:43:00
Fourth of July week is crazy so I don't have too much time to write this, but here's a track from bizarre androgynous electro duo DUKE (not to be confused with Duke the rapper). I don't really get most of their stuff, but this song really works for me. It's called "Penthouse Hell", and even the slashing part creeps me out a little (you'll know it when you hear it), it really is a good song. These guys(?) aren't brilliant songwriters, but they're amazing producers.

Live music: Valeze on Fearless TV

This video shows why Valeze is my favorite under-the-radar band. Here they are performing "Go Go Go" on Fearless TV, a local show in New York that I wish was available in StL. It's a great performance, very Clash-sounding. Tiffany Randol is amazing, and I hope Valeze can achieve some alt-rock fame in the future.
