I bought a macbook yesterday! I've needed a new machine for ages as my old PC has been running slowly and falling over regularly for a while now. It's about 6 years old so has done well but is definately a bit of a dinosaur now. So I visited the Apple store yesterday and decided on a mac book for lots of reasons - but the large student discout they offer (14% in the uk) swung it for me. I was really impressed at how helpful they were in the shop - if a little evangelical about mac vs pc (am I the only person in the world who finds those adverts a bit smug?) I'm busy trying to get used to the new commands and interface after years of using a pc. I'm tempted to buy a mac for dummies book - I felt like I was bashing my head against a brick wall last night - I couldn't work any of it out! I'm sure I'll get there. I was on a presentations skills course on Monday and Tuesday. Very 'stretching!' I'm an unusual person in that I enjoy presenting (well, in a training room any

Firstly, if anyone can tell me if there's a way to reply to comments rather than starting a new post (this seems a bit of a 'formal' way to do it, if you see what I mean!) Anyway, Juicy fairy asked how much the cotton cashmere yarn cost me - £1.50 (around $3) for 50gms.  I think full price it's around twice that.  I love all kinds of yarn but do tend to go all giddy over supersoft natural yarns -I love some of the bamboo yarns that are around at the moment for example.  I'm turned off by anything scratchy or prickly - knitting is SO tactile for me that I couldn't stand working with something that I was irritating. I'm a huge fan of Rowan for their colors and the huge range of patterns (and I live not far from their headquarters in Yorkshire so we get a good stock around here.)  Debbie Bliss is another favorite as is Louisa Harding who does some beautiful, imaginiative yarns without being garish or too 'novelty'.  I've made some beautiful garments u

My new favorite yarn store!
2007-06-26 15:02:38
I paid a visit to the new local yarn store – and it was bliss! In fact I’m slightly concerned that the two women running it actually thought I was a bit of a weird knitting stalker type!  I walked in and it’s laid out is such a gorgeous way – lots of cards and ‘pretty’ things at the front of the store, with the yarns displayed in piles and shelves so that all of the different colors and textures can be seen.  Kid in a candy store wasn’t in it!  There were rows of Noro, Debbie Bliss, RYC, Rowan, Louisa Harding – and lots more that I couldn’t tell you the names of. One of the lovely ladies who run it came up and asked me if I was ok and if there was anything I needed a hand with and I replied that I was in heaven! She seemed to appreciate it (at least she didn’t back away in fear!) and we had a lovely chat about our favourite designers, yarns and so on.  I put my name on their mailing list for the classes that are starting in September (seems a

One Chilled Out Knitter!

Today I feel FINE!  I've had a lie in, breakfast made for me, and a whole day stretching out ahead of me with NO WORK TO DO!!!  I'm doing a fine job of ignoring the housework that needs to be done and I'm having a totally self-indulgent day designed to recharge my batteries and soothe my frazzled nerves! I was so tired and worn out by yesterday and felt rubbish because I know I've been a bit of a b**** this week.  I can put it down to lack of time, relaxation and sleep but whatever my excuse, it's out of order.  I was snappy with John and Cole and just not really present - even when I was taking a break from my work. I'm too good at throwing myself into things and pushing myself to achieve that I can get a bit past myself and I know it's becoming overwhelming.  When it gets like that and I'm not really nurturing myself or keeping my stress levels in check then I know it's time for a break.  I know there are LOADS of things I could be doing today

It's finished, It's finished, it's finished!
2007-06-22 07:52:24
At last - I've finished my mammoth marking!  I ended up working ALL last weekend and every night this week - I remarked them twice just to make sure I was happy with the marks (I felt such a big responsibility - gettting it wrong will have a serious impact on these kid's final degree marks).  I was up to 1.30 last night and got up at 6 this morning to finish them off.  John has been a star and driven them over today to hand in because I'm in work (at the day job) - next year (persuming I get asked to do it again - they might think I'm rubbish once they see the marks!) I'm going to have to take a couple of days leave to do it - it's WAY too much otherwise. Tonight I'm going to a make up party and my friend's house and then flopping on the sofa with a glass of wine - which I don't usually want to do but I'm so tired all I want to do this weekend is a big NOTHING! I'm enjoying filling in the inovice too - Disneyland here we come!

Wine and knitting do NOT go!
2007-07-01 13:57:56
John was away last night and as I was working all day yesterday (and stuck on the motorway getting home for 2 HOURS getting home!) I was in the mood for a chill out last night. I hardly ever drink alcohol - I'll have the occassional glass if I'm out with the girls but as John doesn't drink at all we rarely have any in the house and, to be honest, I don't miss it at all. However, some friends had come over last weekend and brought a couple of bottles of wine and there was one left over. I thought, 'why not, just have a glass'. I settled down, glass in had, to watch Doctor Who - yes I know it's a bit sad as Cole wasn't even here, but I couldn't wait to find out what happenned! The first glass of wine went down very well and I was knitting away, thinking how lovely the cardigan was going to look on little Alice. By the time I was on my second glass I was caring less and less about the cardigan, and by the time I'd polished off my third I realised I was knitting with one 3.

Wheeeey! It's the weekend!
2007-06-29 15:53:54
It's friday and I SO have that Friday feeling (even though I'm actually working tomorrow morning!) I had a great day today because I sent the invoice in for the University tutoring I did and it felt GREAT! This has been a very abundant week - I got my bank charges back, I've invoiced for my tutoring AND for the work I sometimes do on a Saturday. AND we've booked the flights for Florida! I'm so excited, especially as we saw some friends at the weekend and they were telling us all about it (as they were there a few months ago); the best deals to get on park tickets, shopping discounts, what to buy, where to go - the three of us were SO excited by the time they'd left that we could barely sleep. Cole is giddy about seeing Spiderman and I'm giddy about the whole thing. I had NO work to do last night so I knitted for about 3 hours watching TV and 'the Notorious Better Paige', which I liked but I don't think John really got into - he seemed to spend a looong time doing the cr

Not so blissed
2007-07-05 17:57:39
It's been a strange week. One that's left me feeling strangely empty and unsure of my own feelings. I had a miscarriage this morning. We hadn't been trying to get pregnant (although regular readers will know that I'm wanting a baby rather soon, but there are a few things that we need to sort out first before trying) But my period was a few days late - not like me at all. And as the days passed I started to feel - different. My boobs were killing me and seemed to be spilling out of my underwear (I put it down to being due on and retaining lots of water). Then I noticed things tasting funny - I had my usual muesli and yogurt for breakfast Monday morning and couldn't stomach it. I was going to the loo a LOT, and then I had this strange taste in my mouth that I couldn't quite describe at first. And then it hit me, it was a metallic taste- Yikes! I couldn't quite believe I was pregnant so I bought an early results test and told John that I felt 'weird' and what I thought

Rain-when will it stop?
2007-07-03 06:53:27
Ok, if you live in the UK you're probably sick of hearing about it - but I'm going to say it anyway!  When will it stop raining?  It seems to have been non stop for weeks and it's July for goodness sake!  It seems to be getting everyone down, and lots of poor people have been flooded out of their homes not too far away from here.  And still it rains. Isn't it funny how the weather affects our mood so much?  Last night I couldn't be bothered exercising once I'd got in from work because I just felt tired and damp and the last thing I wanted to do was go out in that horrible weather.  I'm reading the Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale which is all about the law of attraction so I'm trying to be really conscious of what I focus on and have a good moan about.  I have to say, I'm really struggling with the weather!  I know that I need to move my focus away from how damp and miserable it is and onto happier things (I don't have to worry about C

John was tiling the kitchen today so I took Cole over to my mum and Dad's. It's been nice spending time with Cole this weekend and not having any work to do. I was glad to take things easy (doctors orders) and I've completely indulged myself food wise by eating nothing but rubbish! Cake, chocolate brownie, pizza for dinner last night - I've totally comfort ate and IT HAS TO STOP! I'm almost looking forward to getting back to really healthy, nurturing foods and I'm promised myself I'll go to the gym tomorrow after work. I took Cole to see Shrek the third yesterday afternoon and we shared chocolate chip cookies in the cinema before calling for pizza on the way home. My tears have reduced although I was an absolute B**** yesterday morning - hormones are holding a Macarena party inside me. Then it was back to crying during the film - although the irony of seeing a film ALL ABOUT having a baby wasn't lost on me and did make me smile in a kind of Doh! way. I've had a nice d

I went back to work today. Everyone was super nice and really supportive which was lovely. I spoke to my GP on the phone and asked if I needed to come in and see her or just let things take their course. She was very nice. She said how sorry she was, that yes it was a miscarriage (you can't get a positive pregnancy test without being pregnant) and unfortunately it's just one of those things. She said that around a third of pregnancies end in miscarriage and it's 'nature's way'. I asked if I could have done anything to cause it like being on anti-depressants and she said that No, it wouldn't have been a factor. The baby had no circulatory system yet so the miniscule amount of drug in my system wouldn't have had any negative effects. That did make me feel better, although it also made me cry which was probably good too. She told me to take it easy this weekend and to call if I get feverish or the pain gets stronger. I'm feeling more positive tonight. John said we have

Two steps forwards, one step back
2007-07-13 09:01:36
I know that this blog is supposed to be about knitting but I'm struggling today and it's got nothing to do with yarn. I feel like emotionally I've taken a step backwards and I can't even explain why - it's completely taken me by surprise.  Today I woke up and came to work feeling in control and positive about life.  By lunchtime I'd dropped like a stone.  And it was the silliest thing that started me off. One of the women in our office is pregnant - and I've coped really well with it (I've kind of ignored it if I'm honest!) She's quite heavily pregnant (32 weeks) and I've really worked at coping well.  Some of my other colleagues were talking about monthly cycles and I burst into tears!  Without warning - I'd started before I'd even registered what I was feeling.  Bizarre. Positive thinking has gone a bit wonky today - the bloody rain isn't helping - when will it stop?!  I'm going to go to the gym tonight after work and then settle in

rip it up and start again
2007-07-12 15:50:10
I've had to rip out all of the back of my cardigan (Yes, I'm finally back on that after a detour into baby shrugdom!) as I realised that I'd somehow managed to knit the whole thing with one 4mm needle and one 3.75mm one! Don't ask me how I managed it without noticing - the really scary thing is that the tension square I'd done was spot on perfect guage! So I've started again but this time using my lovely new 4mm bamboo needles. They work much better than the metal ones for the cotton yarn I"m using. It also feels nice, in a weird masochistic way, to start again - it's how I'm feeling in general after last week. I feel a bit like things have gone through a 'do over' - like all of the cards of my life were thrown up in the air with the miscarriage and they've fallen back down in slightly different places than before. Some of it's good - and I'm holding onto those. The one's that aren't so good - the worry about whether it would happen again, a loss of optimism - the

combining knitting yarn weights
2007-07-10 10:49:34
I'm feeling a bit more 'back in the saddle' today so I thought I'd share a tip that my Mum gave me this week.  She said that she often combines yarns to get the desired weight if she doesn't have what the pattern recommends, or prefers to substitute another yarn to that given in the pattern.  For knitting up, simply use double i.e. two strands the yarns listed below: If you need sport weight yarn (baby or 4 ply), combine 2 strands of fingering (2 ply) yarn For worsted weight (Aran) combine 2 strands of sport weight yarn For Bulky yarn (chunky) combine 2 stands of worsted weight yarn. Playing around with different yarns in different combinations can also achieve really interesting textures.  if you're unsure of the compatiability of a yarn with your pattern, do a tension square and see how many stitches you need to achieve the same size as recommended in the patttern.  You can also achieve the correct tension by using different needle sizes to those recomme

Color knitting - what's the difference between Intarsia and fair isle?
2007-07-20 15:48:12
This is a question that used to fox me - what IS the difference between Intarsia and Fair Isle knitting?  Both are color knitting techniques, so is the difference just in the names? Well, in a  word - No!  Fair Isle is the name given to the technique of stranded color work.       It tends to be used for intricate patters using a number of colors and there are lots of 'traditional' fair isle patterns.  In fact, traditional fair isle patterns rarely had more than 3 consecutive stitches in the same color. These pictures give some good examples.  The technique and patterns originate from scandinavia and the north of scotland (In fact, it takes it's name from an island between shetland and the Orkney Islands.) There is a specific technique for working fair isle that invovles 'stranding' the yarn at the back of your knitting and traditionally uses no more than two colors in a row.  This means that you are carrying 2 colors across the

time off - and manic knitting!
2007-07-23 16:52:45
I feel all giddy - I've not done any work - No university, no website stuff - nothing! And it feels great! I'm so used to being busy but I just haven't had it in me recently. I've spent lots of evenings knitting in front of the TV - I've finished the back of my cardigan - re done after realising I was using two different sized needles! But I've done it again and really enjoyed it. It's nothing taxing - stockinette stitch mainly. But I often like simple, repetitive knitting - it's very meditative. I went shopping at the sales yesterday. There's lots of great stuff around because our summer in the UK has been so rubbish that no one's been buying summer clothes. I got some holiday stuff - bikinis and a cut away swimsuit which I can't decide if it's sexy or silly! John said the former but he paused a bit too long before answering! I'm getting really excited about going away - even though it's 3 months away! I've been looking at the Kennedy Space Centre website ton

I'm proceding with the cardigan in fits and starts. I had a lovley coaching session in work on Friday and I came up with some strategies for dealing with my feeling of total lack of direction at the moment. I had planned to paint our bedroom this weekend as I wanted to be busy as I'm missing Cole who's off on his holidays with his Dad for a week. But my coach suggested I did some nurtuting instead - and some clearing out. One of the things I've been struggling with recently is I feel very scattered mentally - I can't seem to focus on one thing at a time. I've also got a new laptop, with wireless broadband so that I can do things like my blog and bits of work more easily, without having to go and lock myself away in the office. But what I've found is that instead of making life easier, it's actually meaning that I'm struggling to concentrate on anything - it's hard when you've got one eye on the keyboard and the other on Dexter! So my coach and I decided that it would

I've been knitting lots this week. I've been really good at not bringing any work home and as I'm waiting for my copy of windows vista to arrive to install on my new macbook (without which I can't do any website work because I've realised I haven't the patience to learn dreamweaver and am going to stick to Frontpage 2003 - so much simpler for my needs for the time being) I haven't been able to do any web work either. Actually it's been lovely to just relax and chill out every evening. Plus my little boy's home! He's been on holiday with his Dad this past week and I've missed him SOOOOO much! I'm really pleased that he has such a great relationship with his Dad, and I'm proud that we've both worked so hard to keep things on good terms for his sake (I have to admit, this one was NOT easy to begin with, especially in the first 18 months after we broke up. I was pretty angry and bitter for a while. Now thankfully behind me.) I've been much better this year than I w

nearly finished one project - & already wondering about the next
2007-08-04 09:02:14
I'm onto the last sleeve of my cardigan. I think I must have the attention span of a very small insect because already I'm thinking about what to knit next. I've got some Rowan kidsilk Haze in a beautiful teal color which I could make a lovely scarf out of but it's still summer and feels too warm to be using mohair. Plus, I find it hard to get excited about mohair because I find it too scratchy to wear myself. I'm feeling far too selfish at present to be knitting gifts - that's something I have a real winder association with. Cole and I went fruit picking yesterday, which was fun-if prickly! We got a tub full of tayberries, which I don't think are 100% ripe so we're going to make jam with them. Having never made jam I'm swinging from blind optimism (obviously driven by total ignorance) to rigid fear (ditto!) Any jam making tips you have will be very gratefully received! Jo x

Help - I'm having a party and my inner six year old is running riot!
2007-08-13 17:26:30
It's my birthday next week. I'll be 36. Something mental inside of me decided it would be a good idea to have a party. Now I'm filled with anxieties - all of which I KNOW are ridiculous but I just can't seem to make them go away! What if nobody comes? what if nobody I like comes? What if the only people who turn up are the rough kids who've heard my parents are away? OK, I know I'm just being flippant now but seriously, parties fill me with uncomfortable feelings and I can't for the life of me work out WHY I thought it would be a good idea to have one! There are a few of my really good friends who can't make it. THAT's made me feel a bit rubbish. But logically I know that they're not abstaining because they don't like me - just because they've made prior plans. But there is something about parties that brings out my inner six year old. I desperately need to chill! I've been enjoying planning food for the bash - I'm thinking a Moroccan theme. We've also got 2

I've the attention span of a small insect!
2007-08-13 04:57:41
I've almost finished my cotton cardigan.  I'm mid way through the second sleeve.  I should be celebrating being on the home straight.  But instead I'm starting something else!  I know this is a supreme act of knitting attention deficit disorder (or KADD for short!) but I'm knitting a shrug in Rowan Kidsilk Haze.  I picked up a Rowan kit in the sales a few weeks ago at half price and I'm planning a birthday party for myself next Saturday.  I want something light and glamorous to wear with my party frock and the lacy shrug looks perfect.  i did think about using some beads on it too for extra glamour but after spending ages threading little seed beads onto the yarn I realised that it was shredding the yarn too much and making it way too fluffy and weak.  If it needs that extra pazazz I could always sew a few on at the end. I spent most of last night playing around with the tension as mine was way too tight.  I also think that it will

Yarn - top tips
2007-08-12 14:18:33
Fluffy yarn has a habit of getting flattened during storage and can be a bit of a nightmare to work with beacause of they're tendency to shed.  Try putting the yarn in plastic bag and then into the freezer for a few hours before working with it - it will help it to keep it fibres and stop them from getting up your nose! Always make sure you choose balls of yarn with the same dye lot or dye batch number when working on a garmet.  When yarn companies produce yarn they dye them in batches and there can be slight variations in color between batches.  So if you don't want to end up with your sleeves a different shade to your body, make sure all of the batch numbers are the same.  In fact, I always buy an extra ball than is recommended in the pattern just in case  there's nothing worse than running out of yarn and finding that the yarn store has run out of your batch. If you substitute a yarn from that which is recomended in the pattern (and I'd encourage you t

Oh a week off work!
2007-08-17 11:25:32
I'm soooo kiddy because I have finished work for a whole week! Actually it's a week and a day because I've been off today too. We've pottered, been out for lunch and done some knitting - just Cole and I and it's been great. The other reason I feel great is that I've cancelled my birthday party! Yes, I know that usually isn't reason for celebration but I feel so relieved. It had become a logisitical, stressful nightmare! People who'd originally said they were coming couldn't, those who said they were now could only come for an hour - before the party was due to start! Others had another function to go to so wouldn't be able to get here until 11pm at the earliest, and the final straw was my brother announcing he wasn't coming because he's too stressed. It was the final straw! I thought, 'I'm going to spend best part of 2 days cooking, buy a load of booze that neither John or I will drink, have to do several waves of food to keep up with the waves of people - it had

More Yarn Tips
2007-08-17 05:27:54
Here are some more yarn tips that I've picked up along the way: 1. Be warey of putting your knitted garments in the washing machine. Most natural fibres won't respond well to the heat and agitation of a washer - in fact, wool garmets will more than likely shrink and 'felt' - the fibres mesh together forming a thick, dense fabric. Believe me - this is NOT what you want to happen with your slaved over new jumper! Handwashing is the way to go and there are lots of gentle handwash detergents on the market that will help care for your knitting. 2. When handwashing be carefult not to use water that is too hot. It's perfectly possible to felt woolen garments by hand and you'd be surprised at how low the temperature needs to be for that to happen. Remember to keep it hand hot - that is water that is comfortable for you to have your hands in without needing gloves. As an extra precaution be careful not to rub the pieces of your garment together as this can damage the fibres.

Storage Tips pt 2
2007-08-21 05:55:00
Here are some more tips on storing your knitting yarn adnd equipment: 6. Yarn taking over the house? Try storing hanks of yarn over coat hangers - it stops them from getting tangled up and keeps them out of the way of cats and small children. Simply loop the yarn over the hanger. 7. Old jars make great places for storing stitch markers, row counters and other small knitting accessories. Decorate them to your hearts content! 8. Most knitters have built up a fair stash of loose patterns. File your loose knitting patterns togther by placing them in clear plastic document files and putting them in a ring bound folder. 9. Got a large amount of knitting magazines (who me??) get some cheap magazine files to store them in. They can be a fantastic reference library. 10. Another yarn storage tip for large stashes of yarn is putting them in canvass shoe or garment holders. They're easy to hand behind a door out of the way and let you see what yarn you have at a glance. 1

Storage Tips
2007-08-20 05:28:00
Storing yarn can be a hassle - especially when you've got more than one project on the go. Follow these tips to ensure that you're yarn is always in tip top condition: 1. If you're cat is a big fan of chasing your yarn ball as you're working (ours is obsessed with chasing my balls of yarn!) try putting it in a container with a small hole in the top to thread your yarn through. It also stops your yarn rolling away from you. 2. Knitted garments neems to be stored as flat and as loosely as possible. If you're storing them for a long period of time (such as over the summer months when the weather's too warm to wear them), wrap them in tissue paper and cover them in a clear plasic bag (try to avoid clingfilm - you don't want to flattent he fibres). Putting them in a cardboard or plastic box out of the way - many companies provide specialist storage boxes ideal for this purpose. 3. For smaller items like beads, needles and row counters try using a (clean and preferably unu

knitting for babies - Part 1
2007-08-24 05:02:00
I love knitting for babies and tiny tots.  There's an almost instant gratification factor - you can see progress really quickly and for someone with the short attention span I have, that's a good thing! Here are some tips I've picked up about knitting for babies: 1.   Baby yarns tend to be very soft and stretchy - be aware of this when you're working as it can stretch out of shape pretty quickly if you're not careful!  2.  And because of this, you may also find that you have to knit at a tighter tension than you normally would.  A tip one of my knitting friends gave me was to knit into the back of the stitch on collars and cuffs - that way you'll get a nice tight finish. 3.  If you're knitting as a gift put the ball band in with the garment when you give it to the new Mum - that way they'll know the washing instructions. 4.  I find stockinette (stocking) stitch the best stitch to use when knitting baby garments as it washes brillia

Birthdays and glamorous knitting
2007-08-24 04:37:25
It was my birthday yesterday and I had SUCH a lovely day! The weather was nice - the sun has FINALLY come out and Cole and I took a picnic to the park and sat in the sun for a few glorious hours. Had a bit of drama at one point when I couldn't see him - but then discovered him with a gang of other kids in the bushes behind the play area building dens. As parents I think we always have a wish list of things we would like to give our kids - sometimes because it's carrying on traditions of our own childhood and sometimes to compensate for things we felt we didn't have. I was a shy kid, finding social situations difficult and awkward. I've never wanted Cole to suffer in a similar way so am so pleased that he's so sociable and makes friends easily wherever he goes. He's not that great at school (long story but he struggles with his eyesight and the school have basically done nothing despite us telling them repeatedly that he needs extra support) but one things I'm pleased wit

knitting for babies - pt 2
2007-08-26 04:54:00
Here are some more tips for knitting for babies 11.  Be careful to choose designs that will be easy to get on and off.  Babies hate having anything pulled over their heads so make sure neck openings are large enough so that this can be done quickly and easily.  Many designs have buttons on the neck edges to make this easier. 12.  The days of having to knit in white or pastel green or yellow when awaiting the sex of the baby are long gone.  Go wild and experiment with bright colours – reds, yellows, greens or multi colored yarns are very fashionable – go wild and experiment! 13.  When knitting booties go for one’s with ribbing or ties – babies have very wriggly feet and anything too loose will just keep coming off! 14.  There are some fantastic natural yarns available but beware of using delicate yarns when knitting for babies.  Babies are messy!  They need changing a lot!  There’s nothing a new mom has LESS time for

The end of the summer holidays
2007-08-31 18:48:16
It's gone SOOOO fast! But today was the last day of the summer holidays. Cole and I went to visit the gorgeous baby Alice and took her (finally) the pink cardigan I knitted from my bargain Debbie Bliss yarn. It was lovely taking a walk through the park in Liverpool and hearing all of the familiar accents! I'm originally from there but now that I live in Manchester I get very nostalgic for the accent. We went to a lovely cafe and had a really relaxing afternoon eating luch, chatting, holding/feeding/burping Alice and discussing Doctor Who in depth with Cole! I've not really had time this week to post about our weekend away in the North East. It was so nice being away (I'm usually too disorganised to sort things out far enough in advance to get away very often, but we made the effort this time and I'm feel quite proud of myself!) The weather was lovely and the coastline even better than my childhood memories. We used to spend all of our summers up there when we were kids
