Tony Dorsett’s 99 1/2 yard record breaker 2007-06-27 19:49:29 Kudos to Sportz Assassin at The Fanhouse who posted this classic gem of NFLness that has not yet been ripped from YouTube.
Tony Dorsett’s 99 1/2 yard (I still to this day don’t understand how that can be the longest…I guess the ball can’t be on the zero yard line) TD run from 1983. Yep, someone dusted off the Betamax and set up the tri-pod in front of the TV. It’s still cool to watch though.

More NFL Jabber 6/27/07 2007-06-27 19:41:24 The Rams are going to find themselves in quite the pinch when Marc Bulger’s contract comes up. The way the guy has played they are going to have a hard time convincing his agent he isn’t worth THAT much. Surly they will ask for way to much but it’s just going to be hard to deny giving him a big dollar contract. But they may have to deny it. Patty will tell you about it…
The Court shot down Bucs fan Gordon Johnston’s challenge of ending the pat downs when entering Raymond James Stadium. Johnston argued that the foreplay was an unreasonable search. The Court countered…with reason…that it is not within his constitutional rights to watch a football game. I found this funny because it really is something that he is choosing to attend. It’s not like it’s on his way into jury duty (where they may do it too).
“Considering Johnston’s ticket was only a revocable license to attend games, there is in the Court&rsq Read more:Jabber
MMA vs. Boxing? Ask Ray Mercer 2007-06-27 07:38:28 The debate between MMA and boxing had a statement on the side of MMA this last weekend. This is a bit of old news but I just watched the video again and was amazed just how little of a chance Mercer
had in this fight. Since then Mercer has said he is done with MMA. Maybe they should let boxers speak in this debate rather than the boxing “experts” flapping their yaps.

NFL Jabber 6/27/07 2007-06-27 06:27:26 Tim MacMahon, blogging at The Dallas Morning News would like to see the Cowboys make a move for Larry Johnson. For? Marion Barber and the Browns first rounder.
A name that just keeps popping up in my RSS reader is Andre Wadsworth. After six seasons he is attempting an NFL comeback. CBSsportsline.com has a decent write up on his story.
DeAngelo Williams has the Panthers playing right into his hand. Going into his second year they are going to a zone blocking scheme that suits him.
“Most of the [tentativeness] is gone now,” said Williams, the 27th overall pick. “I mean, there’s a new [blocking] scheme to get accustomed to, but it’s a lot like what we did at Memphis, so I actually feel more comfortable. It’s like second nature for me. And just having been around the game for a year now, knowing the ropes, that helps any [second-year] player a lot.”

Commish will be Crackin’ Skulls 2007-06-26 06:19:11

Next time I have to come in here, I’m crackin’ skulls.”
Class was in session when the Principle took the stage. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell showed all the new rookies that his was bigger than theirs at Monday’s Rookie Symposium. You have to think this guy had a “You want some of this?” air about him. I would loved to have been there to see how many ways a guy can say “Don’t f*ck with me” without actually saying it.
“I’d be naive to think everyone would be able to understand it,” Goodell said. “But I think we’re making players more aware of the standards of behavior. We’re giving them more tools and resources to make sure they can make those decisions.”

Bears cut Johnson for speeding ticket? 2007-06-25 16:51:39 The Bears
have cut the Tank. From what I can make of it he is being cut for the equivalent of a speeding ticket. As everyone knows, he was pulled over for going 40mph in a 25mph zone and the officer thought he was “impaired” at the time. He was arrested for “DUI Impaired to the Slightest Degree” but was not charged or booked. Blood was taken and sent off to the lab. Johnson
was said to be cooperative.
From the sounds of this Johnson was not showing he was drunk enough to be charged via a Breathalyzer so they drew blood (I’m just guessing there but the Breathalyzer would be in procedure). He was not charged because they had nothing to hold him on at that time. results won’t even be available for two weeks. Essentially, the Bears just cut a man for a speeding ticket.
“We are upset and embarrassed by Tank’s actions last week,” general manager Jerry Angelo said in a statement. “He compromised the credibility of our org
Let me speak at the Rookie Symposium 2007-06-24 07:41:33
The annual RookieSymposium
is set to take off this week. All NFL rookies are gathered to go over what not to do as an NFL player. Well, what not to do as a person. Current NFL players and people in the know go over topics like money, women, pot, drinking, chicks, security, dealing with personal issues, strippers, “your buddies”, dealing with success, babes, life after football, media stuff, and women.
This season may be easier than ever before to put together a curriculum for the four day treat. Binders with newspaper clippings from the past year would do it. ProFootballtalk.com could be a good source. Their popular “Turd Watch” has already compiled a decent list of things not to do.
Reggie Bush, who isn’t too far into his NFL career himself, is set to speak
at the event.
“I think a lot of it is very good for the rookies to hear. I just kind of wish they would just do it earlier,” Bush said. “Because by that time, you’ve
NFL Jabber 6/24/07 2007-06-24 06:11:50 If there is a guy who can tell you if anything is going to be different this year it’s going to be Marcel Shipp. The guy has been around for seven years. Sucks to be on a losing team that long. Sucks more to be on a losing team that long in the desert.
“Just judging by the offseason, it’s like night and day,” he said. “I look around the weight room and about 85 percent of the guys are training, doing stuff that is going to help us on the field. Usually, in the past, guys would come in, work out, then go work out somewhere else after. Now, we have guys coming in, working out, and you’re going to sleep after these workouts.”
Another NFL player got his ass hit with a taser this weekend. Dolphins DT Fred Evans got it this week. I know you have never heard of him but apparently his is how the kids get their name out there these days.

NFL Jabber 6/23/07 2007-06-23 07:12:50 Thomas Jones is looking forward to playing on an offense with some playmakers. I never really thought about it but this guy is going from being on the field with Rex Grossman to Chad Pennington (insert injury joke here). The receiving threat on the field will be Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery instead of Desmond Clark. Another reason to feel that Jones is going to break out BIG this season.
“The offense that we run gives me a lot of opportunities to get the ball in the open field and do some things out there,” Jones said. “Chicago’s offense was a little more…we were pretty predictable as far as the running game. Our philosophy was, ‘Let’s do what we do,’ and that’s run the ball.
“We have some great players on offense. We have a lot of guys who can make plays.”

NFL Jabber 6/22/07 2007-06-22 06:43:30 In an attempt to show he is still needed on the team, Kyle Orton kicked ass at a Bears bowling outing. Orton has the same philosophy on the lanes as he does on the field. Afterward he said...
“It wasn’t my best game by any means, but it was good enough to win.”
The Bucs could be calling for cash from Jake Plummer for missing mini-camp. I know, I know…he is retired. They don’t care, he is a piece of meat and they own him according to Bucs GM Bruce Allen.
“You can’t unilaterally retire as a player in the NFL,” Allen said. “Because you have a contract. He is under the same obligations as every player our the team.
“It is resolved. We’ve traded for him and it’s no different than if he elects not to report to camp, no different than when Keenan McCardell didn’t report to camp or when you see other players hold out. There’s no difference.”

NFL Jabber 7/1/07 2007-07-01 14:50:01 Not exactly new news (typing this I wonder if the word “news” comes from “new”…hmmm….) but it’s being talked about again how the NFL is looking at 45 second max on video that will be allowed for news organizations to use at a time on websites. That, my friend, sucks!
Houston Chronicle’s John McClain has shown just how hard that is to cram a story into that time allotment in THIS VIDEO.
You know how people talk about when a professional sports star should realize he is a role model and should act like? They usually say this when the player screws up but Vince Young knows it now. It’s not exactly what he was talking about when discussing his ROY campaign but it’s what I thought of reading it.
“It’s my dedication,” he said. “I didn’t want to fail. A lot of people look up to me: My family. Fans. Kids. A lot of people in the world look up to me. Here I am in a whole other state. I didn&rsquo Read more:Jabber
First pick in the Blogger Mock Draft is… 2007-07-01 07:23:27 So I’m up first in The Hazean’s Blogger
Mock Draft
. The way I see it is there are three guys in this position I can be looking at. Larry Johnson, Steven Jackson, and that Tomlinson kid on the west coast. My staff and I go through a very thorough process of determining who will and will not be on our draft board. When it comes to character we make Roger Goodell look like he is skipping to work whistling in a pink polo shirt.
First
we flew to Kansas City to have a look at Larry Johnson. Johnson was picked first in many drafts last season and although he put up very good numbers he wasn’t the Superman I think many owners who took him #1 thought he would be. His stock appears to have taken a hit this offseason with even more loss on the O-Line. You can look at the departure of Trent Green as a gain or a loss. Carries…gain. 11 in the box…loss.
My first impression of Johnson is that he can’t be very tough. He had this thing for sucking on sweet p Read more:Mock Draft
Gonna Mock it up with some other Bloggers 2007-06-30 05:27:21
We got invited to participate in The Hazean’s Blogger Mock Draft. Pretty good idea. Twelve bloggers are going to go through a couple rounds of Fantasy Football mocking starting on July 1st. I thought I would show some love to my fellow bloggers and give out some links to some of their recent work.
This will be the draft order and the words in blue are clickable links that will “beem you” to their recent work. Cool, huh? This Internet thing rocks because this would suck doing this by letter. I would like to take it a step further and challenge you all to a league of our own!
I have the number one pick. I’m not going to rush into anything but I think I know who I’m going to take. I bet I could piss a bunch of bloggers off if I started the thing out by taking Rex Grossman.

Top 10 things your Fantasy Mag will tell you 2007-06-30 04:48:19
Out of date and overpriced I cannot believe these things
are still being sent out to news stands every year…but they are…and they sell. So thinking about that this morning I decided to come up with the Top 10 things your Fantasy Mag will tell you. Maybe this will help you decide on which is best when choosing your fantasy mag. If your going to choose one I guess go with one that has the best pictures because they all pretty much say the same thing. This is the first year that I have not fallen into the trap. I know what they are going to say but I can’t wait for the season and it’s easier to take to the bathroom than a computer.
#10…LaDainian Tomlinson is pretty good and should be your #1 pick. (If you don’t already know this I want to play in your league.)
#9…Peyton Manning is a good QB (See above).

Happy Birthday John Elway! 2007-06-29 05:24:32 Happy
belated Birthday
to John Elway. Can you believe this guy is gaining on 50? He turned 47 yesterday and seemed to be lost in the shadow of sharing a birthday with KSK in the blogging world (they did have quite the party going).
Elway kind of seems ageless to me. It would not shock me a bit if he were still playing. I think that is because he was there for a majority of my football youth and into adulthood. I remember the first time I seen Elway on TV. He was leading this great comeback. No…not The Drive bu a great comeback nonetheless to this kid in small town Iowa sitting in his room. They were playing the Seahawks. I also remember it as the first time I seen a QB throw the ball out of bounds because I was wondering what that was about…turns out he was stopping the clock.
Anyway, Happy Birthday
John! Here is a fitting tribute video that The Sports Guru posted at Milehighreport.com

All the fantasy football secrets here! Pt. one 2007-06-28 19:16:08 Fantasy Football Secrets. You notice how almost every site that wants you to pay to see their content seems to have THE secret to help you win YOUR league. I call BS! I’m sick of it. For one thing, they don’t know which friggen scoring system your using.
It’s like how many bodybuilding magazines that claim to have THE secret workout that nobody has discovered in thousands of years. After about $1000 in magazines you come to realize that there are only so many body parts, movements and angles.
As for pay fantasy
sites and magazines I’ll let you in on a little secret. Most of them don’t have anything you cannot find yourself. I’ll help you out a little bit and you can slip me $5.99 if you feel like it. There are some things I will not say however with drafts of my own coming up but I will give you what most sites charging you $19.95 a year will start off telling you.

Cashman to be canned, Yankees will thank him 2007-07-04 07:27:16 We are going on a little slant in a couple of ways today. First we are having a guest blogger today (which is great because the Convenience Store Clerk has slept in today and I’m out of coffee!). Second, it’s a post with a little MLB flavor.

Brian Cashman is gone after this year as the general manager of the Yankees
unless by some miracle they get to the World Series. As of July 3rd they are 11 games out of first in the AL East and 8.5 out of the Wild Card. Their pitching is not good so barring an ARod like offensive explosion by multiple players, the Yankees will be left out of the playoffs this year and Cashman will be gone (along with Joe Torre, but that’s a different topic).
Thing is, Cashman has done a great job with the Yankees not only in the past, but right now too. Yes, the team sucks this year, but he is building it for the future. The offseason trades of Jaret Wright, Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield not only
Getting my fantasy on! 2007-07-03 21:38:13 I looked at the calendar today and it’s July already. Zero work put into fantasy
football this far into the year outside of restricted free agency and rookie drafts in a couple of dynasty leagues. What has happened to me?
I looked at rankings for the first time a few minutes ago. I can’t describe the feeling. The tingling in the gut. I’m all giddy. With all my time being put into getting the new football fansite going and putting more time into the blog than I ever, I have neglected my favorite sport. Yes I say sport because I’m just that far into fantasy football.
I’m really looking forward to fantasy football in 2007. Outside of my regular leagues at our site I’m getting into some new leagues. A majority of the guys in the leagues at TINO I have played with for years. I realize today how much I miss the mystery of who your playing.

Tank WAS let go for a speeding ticket 2007-07-02 18:25:46
So I went on a little rant when Tank Johnson was let go basically for a speeding ticket. I felt that there was not enough to charge him because he was not legally intoxicated. Blood tests are used when either the person is not cooperating and refusing a breath test…or when the cops are really reaching and throwing out a last ditch effort. Johnson was said to have been cooperative so with all the information given it was my belief they were reaching. I WAS RIGHT! (For those not in the know…I know Tank was drinking. It does not take much at all to hit a .072)
Tank Johnson’s blood alcohol level was below the legal limit when the former Chicago Bears tackle was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving June 22.
Johnson’s blood alcohol level was .072, under the presumptive limit in Arizona of .08 percent, police Sgt. Andrew Duncan said Monday. No charges have been filed pending results of a completed investigation.
Like I said before, Tank Johnson was essenti
College Football Grad School 2007-07-02 05:53:18
I was racking my brain when the news came out of the UFL. I knew I had heard something last year about a new league that seemed to go away. Well, it’s back.
The All American Football
League is getting ready to capitalize on the shut down of NFL Europa (Didn’t that used to be NFL Europe?). They are not really looking to compete with the NFL. They are content being the little brother that tags along, kind of like the Arena Football League.
“It seems to be getting some wings,” says former Notre Dame athletics director and Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner Gene Corrigan, an AAFL board member. “We’re moving ahead and doing some stuff. We hadn’t really done anything but talk before. Now there’s action.”
The main concept for the AAFL is to basically use any college graduate (players have to have a four year degree and exhausted college eligibility…sorry Beer truck drivers) that can not make an NFL team or even get drafted Read more:College

Larry Johnson falling out of favor? 2007-07-07 07:26:53
Just a year ago LarryJohnson
was going first in many fantasy football drafts. What a difference a year makes. I have noticed that although many “experts” are still ranking LJ #2 behind LT, Joe Fantasydrafter is letting LJ fall in many mock drafts. You have to take notice of the actions of the people that you are actually playing against.
Riding on an article by Tom Borrelli questioning who the #2 back should be in fantasy drafts this season I posted a poll at There is NO Offseason with the backs mentioned in the article. I have to say I was a bit surprised at how LJ has fallen out of favor
with my fantasy football peers. Taking the first twelve votes (Like the basic 12 team fantasy league) these are the results…

NFL Jabber 7/13/07 2007-07-13 06:58:32 Every year there is one guy that gets all the pub in the Supplemental Draft. This year the Ravens took that guy and gave up a fifth round pick next year.
“If you would tell us that we drafted Jared Gaither in the fifth round of the 2008 draft, we’d be doing handstands and cartwheels,” Ravens director of college scouting Eric DeCosta said. “We think we took an interesting step today.”
The Chargers made a pick as well, selecting Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver in the fourth round.
“We had the opportunity to get a good football player today, and we took it,” General Manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “Paul Oliver is very competitive, aggressive, confident player. He’s not cautious about anything he does on the field. You know how we like depth. We’ll add Paul to the mix as a Charger and time will tell.”

NFL Jabber 7/11/07 2007-07-11 06:27:14 Dhani Jones knows that he is walking into a deep LB situation in New Orleans. Not deep in the sense of stacked with studs, just people that have out performed him so far in the NFL.
“They have Scott Fujita, Mark Simoneau, Scott Shanle and a host of linebackers that are coming in,” Jones said last week on the NFL Network. “I will provide the depth, but also will push those linebackers so that we can compete going into next season.”
Troy Brown is sticking around for a year in New England’s crowded WR corps.
Tom Brady is No. 9 on that USA Today top 25 of the last 25 years list.
Usually a team gets pumped for their top 5 pick right away. The Bears are getting pumped for Cedric Benson now.

Some ESPY Thoughts 2007-07-16 15:55:05 I just watched the replay of the ESPY’s and thought I would jot down some thoughts.
Amanda Beard has a big shiny forehead just like Peyton Manning. Did they airbrush that out of the Playboy pictures?
Speaking of Peyton Manning…that guy is so damn polite and proper. I would welcome a headline of him getting pulled over doing 45 in a 25, drunk but not enough to blow over, texting some cuss words at his mom with a stripper having Tom Brady’s baby on his lap.
When they do the tribute to the people that died in the last year…clap for all or none. It just seemed awkward when the crowd would clap praise for one dead person but you could hear crickets as they show pictures of Darrent Williams and Marquise Hill.
I’m not a big basketball guy and I don’t know that I have ever heard LeBron James talk but the guy is actually funny. Can’t act, but he can laugh at himself…getting a big forehead nod of approval from Peyton Manning after doing
NFL Jabber 7/19/07 2007-07-19 07:31:35 This whole Vick getting busted thing is putting a spotlight on a “sport” that doesn’t want it.
Even if Vick dodges the Federal thing, he could still face local charges.
Marcus Spears is 20 lbs. lighter and liking this new Coach in town thang.
Another Cowboy note…will someone please get a grip on the Big D Grid Iron blog or just shut the damn thing down? The spam has been all over that thing for quite some time. (Warning…if you go to the link you will see what some call “bad words”).
Rumblings this week about just how secure Rudi Johnson’s job is after Marvin Lewis said he wants more yards per carry. This should put a little spotlight on Kenny Irons in camp.
The USA Today top 25 in the last 25 years has been getting alot of smack talk. Walter Payton comes in number 3. Who the hell can be #2 and #1?
