eyeOS 1.0 - The Web Operating Sysem 2007-06-25 05:48:46 Just last week I came accross for a first time with EyeOS 1.0. What a magnificent discovery it was! Well, this project is only very young, however it does show its potential.
So what is eyeOS
1.0? As the title suggest - it is web operating system. For those of you who doesn’t know, how it is possible, let me just explain. Imagine, you can connect to your home desktop through web browser from anywhere in the word and access your files, music, pictures, run applications, print documents. Most importantly, everything would be not saved at your home, but somewhere on you ISP’s server, fully backed up, secure, available anytime from anywhere. And this is all what is eyeOS about. Rainy sunday 2007-06-24 16:52:21 Today when I wake up I wasn’t really shure what to do. There were pleny to things which I should do arround the house, but I couln’t be asked to do them. So after a quick breakfast I sat down in the front of the telly, turn on the XBOX and started to play. I had few new games, so decided to try Command & Conquer. I must say, what a great game it is!
The graphics is beautiful, but most important the gameplay is just great. I was first worried about the controls, I am just not used to the XBOX controller and I have always preffered keyboard and mouse for strategy games on my computer. After about 30min training I was confident enough to start my frist campaign. It took me couple of hours to finish Act I, before I have realised I have more important things to do, like finish the electric wiring in my garden shed, which I am currently redoing for an office.
So if you have a Xbox 360 and like strategy games, I believe Command and Conquer is one of the best from this genre he
Setting Up Postfix As A Backup MX 2007-06-23 03:11:10 In this blog entry I will show how you can set up a Postfix mailserver as a backup mail exchanger for a domain so that it accepts mails for this domain in case the primary mail exchanger is down or unreachable, and passes the mails on to the primary MX once that one is up again. I use this quite often to setup backup mail servers for my customers running “MS Exchange”. In that case, if you are running Exchange, it will normaly become your primary mail server. Backup Mailhubs - mail servers are important to make sure none of your emails would be returned back.
I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you! I have only slightly modified this tutorial whic I have found on different website. I always wanted to know how to achieve this task, what is the simplest way. So here we go. (more…) Read more:Setting
HOW-TO: Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Ubuntu 2007-06-22 07:28:45 Just few days ago I have published post with information how to install AdobePhotoshop
CS in Linux. However, the manual doesn’t really apply for CS2 version of adobe. Here is another one, particulary written for CS2 version of Photoshop. It’s done for Ubuntu
, however you can safely use it for any Ubuntu / Debian compatible linux.
This HOW-TO covers up the whole process of installing Adobe Photoshop
CS2 on a Ubuntu box in a few simple steps. This method has been tested only on Ubuntu, but it should work on any other linux flavor. Any questions or feedback leave them in the comments. (more…)
Fldigi and amateur radio on Linux - part 2 2007-06-21 06:10:06 Equipment needed
If all you want to do is to listen in — to read what others are saying — all you need is audio cable running from your HF radio to the sound card on your PC. But if you want to both send and receive, you’ll need the proper license and:
An HF transceiver which allows computer control
A computer with serial port and sound card
Software like Fldigi to encode and decode the signals
An audio cable from your transceiver audio output to your PC’s sound card line-in
An audio cable from your PC’s sound card speaker output to your transceiver’s microphone input
A cable from your PC’s serial port to your transceiver’s computer control port

Fldigi and amateur radio on Linux - part 1 2007-06-20 03:41:10 Dave Freese has just released version 1.2 of Fldigi, a popular new program for Linux
and FreeBSD which enables amateur radio operators to join their radios and their computers at the hip and create a new kind of ham shack: a digital ham shack. Here’s the story behind both the rising popularity of “sound card” digital modes in amateur radio and how Fldigi lets you enjoy enjoy them on Linux.
Hams use their own jargon, which is just as obscure to non-hams as IRQ, USB, or DDR are to non-computer geeks.
According to Wikipedia, there are about 3 million amateur radio operators — or hams — around the world. There have been amateur radio operators for as long as there has been radio. The ARRL, which is the national association for amateur radio in the United States, was founded in 1914 and counts 150,000 active members today. (more…)
What I think about Open-Source 2007-06-19 08:41:23 Another day is here and I was just think
ing what to write for my little blog. By surfing the web I came accross excellent application, of which I knew before, but never tried it to a certain degree. I am talking about SugarCRM. The Other day I was also looking at Zimbra Collaboration Suite.
I have found both open-source programs very usable, for no upfornt cost you can get excellent collaboration software package or CRM which I believe for the cost (free) is much better than for example Microsoft CRM. Actually, the past few months gave me a great insight about various open-source packages, mostly web based aimed to Small Business Market. (more…) Read more:Source
KLog - Ham Radio Logging program for KDE 2007-06-18 08:48:08 Many of Linux users will use KDE as their manager in Linux. KDE has got lots of powrefull features, some of the people are saying that it is bloated. For Linux HAM’s KDE development tools allowed to create range of good software. Today I would like to introduce KLog, one of the best logging software made for Linux.
KLog project started already in 2002 and since then is under active development. It’s quite easy to install using synaptic. Just search for klog, it would be installed within minutes if not seconds for you.
The person behind this project is Jamie Robles - EA4TV. His personal website abut KLog is here: http://jaime.robles.nu/klog/eindex.html. (more…) Read more:Radio
How to run Photoshop CS in Linux 2007-06-17 06:21:11 One of the applications people miss the most for Linux
is Photoshop
. Many people like Gimp, but I don’t really get on with him very well. I find Photoshop easier for me because I spent more time using it when I was a Windows user. Photoshop is also one of the most difficult applications to run on Linux, so I began investigating and here is the answer:
First of all, we need to clean our work area: if you are a Debian user, one apt-get remove --purge wine and apt-get install wine should be enough for having a clean install of the newest version of Wine, a Windows emulator for Linux platforms. If you are not a Debian user, you must get Wine from the official website, and install it through the command ./configure && make && sudo make install, in the directory made when uncompressing the downloaded package. QRQ - open source morse telegraphy trainer 2007-06-29 07:59:39 One of the newcommers on the HAM linux scene is QRQ - which was updated to its latest version just few days ago - 17th June 2007. There isn’t much goig on on the HAM linux scene, comaper to its windows counterpart. Later I would publish few how-to’s about how to run windows ham radio software under linux. Today, I would like to introduce small, but powerfull open source
morese telegraphy (CW) trainer available for any flavour of linux and unix.
This little program is not actually full blown morse code trainare, but its more geared for improving your ability to copy callsigns at high speeds, specially in contests.
QRQ actually works under the terminal, but this shouldn’t put you away. For what it does, it’s more then enough. I would certianly recommend this usefull cw trainer to all of you who wants to improve their ability to receive speeder cw. It’s not really the best program for newcommers, however you can still set it up to teach you callsigns in
Linux Open Source Server Project - LOSSP 2006 2007-06-28 08:00:27 Lately I was thinking about to put together Linux
server which would be able to replace Microsoft Windows Server 2003, but offer everything as SBS 2003, but for free, more secure and stable.
During the next few weeks/months I will work on this project and give you all the updates here. You will be able to read and learn with me about how to set it up, from the basics to more advanced features.
Let me just write what I have on my mind. It will be of course running purely open source software, nothing paid will get there. It would be acting as your web server (like IIS), mail server (like Exchange 2003), spam filtering and antivirus, and file server. You will be able to host multiple websites, receive emails from multiple domains, connect to webmail from anywhere in the world, manage users through LDAP like Active Directory. Antennavis: OpenGL antenna visualisation toolkit for nec2 2007-06-27 07:33:40 Welcome to another blog entry where you can read about HAM radio related software running under Linux. Today, I would like to write short article about Antennavis.
So what is Antennavis? As the title suggest, it is OpenGL
antenna visualisation interface for nec2. Every ham heard about antenna modeling and visualisation. This kind of software is extremly usefull for everybody, who wants to build their own antenna. Antennavis comes into the place then. This software allows user to fly arround and view the antenna system and their patterns from any angle in 3D. I have already used couple of simillar software under windows, but none of them allowed me to see it in 3D.

Zimbra successfully running! 2007-07-03 10:44:53 This is not the same kind of posts I have been publishing recently. Its just about what I have done recently at my home.
As you already know, I have previously mentioned Zimbra Collaboration Software in my blog. I was able to try it through Zimbra demo website, but this time I wanted to install Zimbra on my own, configure it and run it on my own server at home. After few days mocking about I can happily say Zimbra is running
on one of my PC’s at home and I am able to receive emails going to my other domain: oliver.bz without a problem.
I will publish another blog entry soon about how to install Zimbra on Ubuntu 6.06 server in few easy step. There are already some articles out there about how to do it, I will just give you simple approach which should work for all of you. All what I can say now is that Zimbra is excellent product, well worth to run. Maybe it’s time to get a dedicated server and run it for your own domain? Have a look here: http://easyspeedy.com/, where you c
GRIG - Ham Radio Control Application 2007-07-02 05:30:48 If you came to linux world from Windows, you have proably used to use some kind of radio control software for your rig. Fortunately, linux has got something to offer again, in this case tidy ham radio control software called GRIG.
So what GRIG does? Basically, GRIG is ham radio control (CAT) software based on Ham RadioControl
Librarie (Hamlib)s. GRIG is not specific software just for certain type of radios, it offers same interface and controls for any kind of transceiver. GRIG can also integrate with other ham radio linux software, for example Xlog and gMFSK. I will post more about those two soft later in my blog. Because of Hamlib library, GRIG supports almost all known radios. For the most up to date list just visit http://hamlib.sourceforge.net/support.html.

Learn Full Gimp Interface In Half An Hour 2007-07-01 09:30:16 I used to use Photoshop a lot. My move to Linux forced my to try alternative program, in my case Gimp, which I would like to use instead or Phothosop for my photography workflow. Few days ago I came accross insteresting article, don’t know exactly where was it, but it showed about how to quckly learn Gimp interface, which is slightly bit different to the Photoshop. Let me start:
After installation of The GIMP 2, when you start it for the very first time, you will see something as shown below:

Qtpfsgui - interface to provide a workflow for HDR imaging 2007-06-30 09:08:44 Every photographer using linux should try to modify some of their pictures to HDR. Let me just explain what HDR means. HDR = High Dynamic Range. This is a lighting procedure designed to emulate the way that light levels in the real world vary over an enormous range. This is mostly achieved by the use of floating point textures and render targets (as well as using the appropriate lighting algorithm); integer formats do not offer the anywhere near the same range of values. Although visually better, the use of floating point formats can result in a large performance impact on some graphics adapters.
This explanation can be very confusing. Basically, HDR is set of techniques that allow a far greater dynamic range of exposures (i.e. a large range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to the deepest shadows. This can n
Linux and Games 2007-07-07 08:06:40 I have received very interesting email from one guy who was asking me if there are any games under the linux. As an avid user he thought linux is only suitable for server systems. To prove him wrong, I have send him following links:

Resources on Open Source Software for windows 2007-07-06 10:22:31 Well, I have promised myself not to publish anything for windows, but this entry is about Open Source
software, for which I have dedicated section for in my blog.
So what gave me the idea to publish resources for Open Source programs running under windows here? Well, lets look at the definition of Open Source:
“Open source software is similar in idea to “free software” but slightly less rigid than the free software movement. Users of open source software are (generally) able to view the source code, alter and re-distribute open source software. There is however less of an emphasis in the open source movement on the right of information and source code to be free and in some cases companies are able to develop proprietary products based on open source ones.” (more…) Read more:Resources

TorrentFlux: A perfect PHP bittorrent client 2007-07-05 07:20:34 A few days ago I have randomly found an information about TorrentFlux. As a big supporter of web based applications I had to try it on my own. In linux I always used to prefer Ktorrent, a very mature application, but with its own limits. Because of this, you might find TorrentFlux the ideal applications for your torrent needs. Under the Windows I use to love uTorrent and to be honest, TorrentFlux gives me everything I missed from uTorrent through easy to use web interface. So while I am at work, I can still access my downloads at home! It can’t be easier than that.
Now I can honestly say that TorrentFlux meeds all of my great expectations for good Torrent download software, just look at few of the features: (more…)
Open Source Alternative to Microsoft Exchange 2007-07-04 03:31:43 Yesterday I have posted information about my Zimbra installation running and configured for oliver.bz domain. Today, I would like to relay article I have found somewhere there in the internet universe:
I will make no bones about my disdain for Microsoft
. I think their business ethics are an oxymoron. I think they may mediocre products by and large, and their focus is keeping you in the revolving door of addiction to their products, not making a quality product at a fair price.
My target today, is MS Exchange
.
For the uninitiated, MS Exchange if Microsoft’s mail server. It is pretty vanilla. It pretty much only does mail. And it is NOT cheap and the migration paths to newer versions are at times treacherous at best.
Exchange/Outlook makes up about 60% of the mail server/clients installed globally with Lotus/Domino taking up the vast majority of the remainder but that is changing as the Open Source
Community has put a bullseye on Exchange to offer a more cost effective solution tha Read more:Alternative
Raw Shooter Essentials and Linux 2007-07-11 04:24:39 Originally I wanted to concentrate purely on Linux
programs, however, I had to change this decision. Why? I know, there are plenty of software available under linux. Still, some people might be missing the extra functionality which is included in other windows programs. There’s no need to install windows and dual-boot it with linux, you can easily run windows programs in linux by using excellent wine or CodeWeavers CrossOver Linux.
Lately I was looking around what other free programs are available out there and came across Raw ShooterEssentials
. Initially, this program was created by Pixmantec, however Adobe has taken it over. Raw Shooter Essentials, which was excellent free product is not available anymore, but you can still find it on the net. One of the great reason why I have mentioned it in my blog is that it runs just perfectly under Linux - wine or CrossOver Linux. (more…)
GIMPshop - easy Gimp interface for photoshop users 2007-07-10 06:40:47 I couldn’t hesitate and had to publish some information about GIMPshop which I am successfully using instead of the original GIMP. I don’t think its good to write in my own words about what actually GIMPshop is, so I took the definition from the wiki:
GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source graphics program GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users
of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP. Or, according to the developer:
“My original purpose for GIMPshop was to make the Gimp accessible to the many Adobe Photoshop users out there. I hope I’ve done that. And maybe along the way, I can convert a Photoshop pirate into a Gimp user.” (more…)
Xlog - another logging program 2007-07-09 06:26:59 Few weeks ago I have introduced Klog - logging
program for KDE users. Today, I would like to say few words about Xlog - logging program. You shouldn’t get yourself confused with Xlog - remote administration tool type of program, a spying tool with the same name.
The ‘Xlog’ I am writing about is an easy to use program for logging your radio contacts. You can open, close and create logs as needed, and add, delete and edit individual log entries. The log is saved into a text file. It supports cabrillo, ADIF, trlog (format also used by tlf), and EDI (ARRL VHF/UHF contest format), and can import twlog and editest files. Logs can appear in either portrait or landscape format.
Xlog is able to do DXCC lookups and will display country information, CQ and ITU zone, location in latitude and longitude and distance and heading in kilometers or miles, both for short and long path. It supports locator distance and heading calculation for VHF logging if you enable the &lsq
Linux-Hams archive 2007-07-08 05:47:49 I have been thinking today about what to publish in my blog. Because I would like to concentrate on certain areas, I would like to stick with my decision to make this blog more appealing for certain types of people.
Today I would like to mention Linux
-Hams Archive which is located here: http://he.fi/archive/linux-hams/. It’s been there active from November 2006, which I believe makes it one of the longest archives running by hams using Linux. The archive maintainer is Heikki Hannikainen, OH7LZB, who can be reached at hessu at hes.iki.fi. (more…)

How to check which operating system is running certain domain 2007-07-13 03:51:04 Have you ever wondered which operating system
is running
for example your friends domain
? If you are running Linux at home, it is very easy to find out. Use this script in your Linux terminal:
FILE=results.csv
for SITE in www.bross.eu www.oliver.bz
do
echo -n “$SITE,” >> $FILE
# Check port 79 and 80 (one closed, one open) cut out the application and OS
# results and create a nice, comma separated version to show mom
sudo nmap -A -O -P0 -p 79-80 $SITE | grep -Eo ‘^80.*|OS guesses.*’ | sed ’s/,/ or /g’
| tr ‘
’ ‘,’ | sed -e ’s/80/tcp open *http *//’ -e ’s/OS guesses: //’ >> $FILE
echo >> $FILE
done
Of course, replace www.bross.eu and www.oliver.bz with domain/s you would like to find out which operating system and web server is that particular domain running. You can even add more domains, after that, just check results.csv file created by the script. It’s easy as that. Enjoy! Read more:certain
Colrdx - ncurses tcp/ip DX-cluster client 2007-07-12 06:30:53 It’s time to introduce another HAM radio program made only for linux. This time it will be a DX-cluster
client. What is DX-cluster? I have been asked this question numerous times by the starting hams.Well, in 2003, we could say the DX Cluster is a mess. But you probably were looking for a more detailed answer to that question. The DX Cluster is a “network” (and in our case we use that term loosely because nobody really knows which is connected to what) of DX Cluster “nodes”. Each node is in turn connected to “users”. Some users are connected to nodes via packet radio on RF links, but these days most are connected to nodes via the internet using a telnet program of one kind or another. (more…)
Cappuccino PC’s - ideal PC’s for your linux box? 2007-07-16 10:45:23 I don’t know how, but somehow I came across this website today: http://www.cappuccinopc.com/. Immediately I started to think:
superb small PC’s ideal
for linux?
excellent thin client PC’s - LTSP?
etc etc etc
As you can see, there could be a lot of potential uses. Some of the Cappucino PC’s start at $100, which would make them really ideal - to use them as thin client PC’s for your existing LTSP project? Why not?
I would certainly browse through and even purchase couple to build my own LTSP based network. Imagine how much could company’s save, not just by not-buying full powered workstations, but on energy costs! Go ahead a browse that website, I am sure it will give you a lot of ideas about what to do. Read more:Cappuccino
Compiz Fusion + Sidux 2007-07-15 04:12:09 Some of you who visit my blog every so often knows that I have been running Linux Mint 3.0 on my PC. Well, this is not longer truth. I have decided to move on and reinstalled Linux Mint 3.0 with Sidux Tartaros. I was quite happy with Mint, however because it is so easy to move from one linux distribution to another within pretty much half an hour, I wanted to give Sidux Tartaros a go. So after about half an hour from booting Sidux LiveCD I was up and running Tartaros with the most common applications I use - KDE Kontact, Kopete, Skype, extra codecs, java, keeping all my settings and having fully functional system.
Because Sidux doens’t contain Beryl, which I used to use in Linux Mint 3.0, I had to have a look what else is available for me to improve the interaction between my person and the desktop. As usual, I didn’t have to surf for long to find Compiz Fussion.
Compiz Fussion is a development version of Compiz, it contains latest bugfixes as well as not-yet discovered bug
