      Nostalgia: Witches from the Mountain

Like anyone else who loves a classic film or book... this makes me fidgety in a 'not so good' way. There are so many pieces of this original film that just work so well together. The original preview for the film was pretty much excerpts from the intro with several clips cut in. The music was haunting and riveting. This coupled with the simple images left me (at about the age of 8) contemplating the mystical symbolism of the title, the children running, and of course the animated dogs. For those that haven't seen this (and those that just want the nostalgia rush); I attach the opening 3 minutes of the

Merry Christmas from the 2 Witches - With Help from Jamie and Clan of the Cats
This is not our art, but the art of a talented artist Jamie Robertson. Mama Kelly has been reading Jamie's online comic Clan of the Cats for almost as long as her youngest child, Princess Nibbles, has been alive and never grows tired of it. It blends the supernatural, the occult, elements of true Wicca, and everyday life issues into a comic that can be sweet, tragic, captivating, and always entertaining. Since Jamie was kind enough to allow us to borrow this strip last year we have done so again.  If you have never read it, give it a try …. it is on hiatus until the new year but you can start at the beginning by clicking here. "If the Saudis can't drag themselves into the 21st century and stop fretting about sorcerers, they might at least try catching up with the British law of 1735," he says. Indeed. But first they must begin by getting out of the 7th century. Related posts • Beheading spree in Saudi Arabia Tags Saudi Arabia • sorcerer • witch • witchcraft

Witches School Fails to Charm Town
The Civil Rights Act protects everyone, except maybe circus people. Next to race, creed, color, gender, and whatever else is PC these days, does the Act need to include Halloween characters? What are witches in a small town to do? A story for those not wary of slippery slopes from the Chicago Tribune: ROSSVILLE, Ill.--Things were already going downhill in this small farming community when the witches arrived.Area factories had shut down. So had the local high school. A suspicious fire had gutted much of the downtown. The use of methamphetamine was destroying families. So when a group of Wiccans from out of town moved into a storefront this summer and erected a sign advertising "Witch School," it was only a matter of time before alarm bells sounded and tempers started to boil in this village of 1,200, about 125 miles south of Chicago near the Indiana border. Sounds like a spooky story, complete with 'alarm bells' and boiling tempers. The culprits? A reporter's favorite boogie-man-cum

On 5 June 2007 in the House of Commons, it was asked if the Secretary of State for the Home Department would set up a nationwide 999 text message service for deaf people who cannot telephone the emergency services. The reply was that an emergency text relay service is already available to give the deaf and hard of hearing access to the emergency services. (Yeah - landlocked and slow Typetalk! - also only useful if you can get an operator available!) In addition a working group, including representatives from the emergency services and the mobile operators, has been set up by the 999 Liaison Committee to see whether an SMS emergency number service can be provided. It’s about time and I hope they won’t take too long. I was walking my dog in the park yesterday and this woman of about 20 (I use this term very loosely) was sitting on a park bench. Did Humans Hinder Their Own Evolution By Burning Witches?
It seems like throughout the centuries, some people have been spontaneously developing special abilities, and have been persecuted for it. Geniuses were declared insane and their ideas were laughed at. Witches were put on trial and burned, drowned, hanged, thrown off cliffs, or banished. Could humanity be further along, evolutionarily speaking? Is it our own fault that we're not? When someone can do something that someone else can't, that person should help others learn to progress. Instead, often history tells us that the opposite happens. The majority eliminates an advanced individual. In shows like, "Smallville," characters like Lex Luthor know better. Lex seeks to harness the power that separates normal people from godlike supermen. Lex already has the technology at his disposal (Kryptonite weaponry could easily be achieved on his part) to eliminate Kryptonian residents from Smallville. Instead, he seeks to learn and understand. Maybe he's a witch!

Indian witches slap the evil out of patients
Do you happen to suffer from cancer or AIDS? Want to get rid of it? All you have to do is travel to India and get slapped by a witch... It's worthless quackery at its finest: A group of women, believed to blessed with powers of witchcraft, claim to have treated people suffering from dreaded ailments like cancer and AIDS by stroking or even slapping them, an annual tradition in a Chhattisgarh slum during the festive Navratri season. ... The witches, wearing black saris and with long hair, jumped and chanted for hours, slapping people to 'take out the evil inside their body and rid them of their ailments', onlookers said. 'The witches are really good. Last year my mother was suffering from mouth cancer. She was treated successfully on Mahashtami night (one of the most important nights during the Durga Puja festival). This time the witches helped me get over my breathing problems by dragging me around by my hair,' said 36-year-old Nanu Tekam. Truly, there is no end to human stupidi

      A night with some witches
A country of parties and festivals, this is how i call the land of Romagna. Every day you have a choice between 3 or 4 beach parties or you can explore the hinterland to find out some country festival. Yesterday we read the advertising flyer of a local festival called “The Night of the witches”, in San Giovanni in Marignano, a little medieval town just 3 km. far from here. So we took our inseparable hotel bikes and we payed a visit to this event. We arrived at 9 p.m and we noticed a holy crowd darkening all the visible horizon. What a terrible sensation to walk like a herring in the oil… Anyway we step ahead, diving bravely this sea of meat. The streets around were barely illuminated by a few lamps and the atmosphere was dark and creepy. In every street was flying above us the dummy of a witch, illuminated in red or blue or green, really scaring stuff. I could hear from distance strings playing an obsessive melody. Suddenly i saw a sign with the history of this Fe

New Blog Joins the 2 Witches Family - Mama Kelly Must be Insane
It is entitled Book Reviews for Pagan Families and my goal is to highlight and review the books I have read (or am reading).  Some will be Pagan texts (relating to magic, spells, witchcraft, as well as the religion of Wicca), some will be fiction, and some will be kids books.  Not every book reviewed will be Pagan oriented but as even my fiction reading tends toward the speculative, odds are most of it will be at least “Pagan friendly”.  So far 2 reviews are up and my hope is to have a new review appear every 2 or 3 days.  The blog itself will host a photo of the book, a link to amazon, a brief overview, and a link to the full review over at my Epinions site where I have been writing reviews on and off for 7 years. As I work on developing this new blog, you will find that the book reviews that now litter our siderbar will be moved over to this new site. I hope you enjoy the end result!! Blessings Mama Kelly

      Mexican Witches: Fransisca Zetina Chavez
My hubby has told me lots of stories about witches and I just posted some stories about Mexican ghosts, I'm thinking about gathering Mexican witch stories too. Anway, this struck my attention.I heard about this story about four years after it all went down (happened in the late 90's) but the point is that Mexico is filled with witches, said both white magic and black magic. Here are a few excerpts from an article written by Joel Simon which can be read in its entirity here.Excerpt #1"Zetina fingers the double eagle claw she wears around her neck, leans back in her kitchen chair and announces that she is the most misunderstood witch in Mexico."No joke! Aren't we all. I don't know a single witch that's not.Excerpt #2"The authorities are convinced that Francisca Zetina Chavez has more to tell them about the body recently found on the property of Raul Salinas, brother of Carlos Salinas, former president of Mexico. Zetina was the spiritual advisor to Raul Salinas. They met regularly, s

Satan is a Christian myth, so it is not something associated with witches) 5) Witches in general are respectful and accepting of all spiritual paths and other religions. 6) Witches respect nature 7) Most witches own a cauldron - the bigger the better (it makes a great Halloween decoration). 8 ) Some witches may own a black cat, but it’s not required to be a member 9) Some witches have tattoos, but most do not. 10) Witches are magical, witty, unique, totally awesome, spiritual beings enjoying the pleasures of a physical life (just like everyone else on the planet no matter what path, religion, or no religion). More on Maypoles (& Witches)
In my previous post I talked briefly about the maypoles that are the centre feature of many village greens in this part of the world. It doesn't take much scratching of the Czech modern veneer to find the ancient and pagan beneath. Maypoles may have become a thing of the past in England or at least a quaint custom with school children dancing rather tweely, but here in the Czech Republic the tradition is alive and strong. Today I took the train from Prague to Cesky Krumlov and it gave me a good vantage point to spot the maypoles in the villages and towns along the route. It is clearly a matter of pride to erect (and protect) the largest maypole, created from a very tall and straight fir. The maypole stays at the centre of the village for the year's length until the new replaces it, by then of course the brightly coloured ribbons at the poles tip have faded at best or been whipped away by a winter wind, but with the dawn of the new summer a new maypole springs erect. On the last night

Shameless Discrimination Drives Witches From Town
ז' באייר תשס"זAn observation in follow up to my previous post, Local Churches Rallied Against Witch School - what is striking about the entire matter is just how shamelessly the opposition to Witch School drives witches out of town. Reading statements reported in the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette, where the statements are no doubt the tip of an iceberg, it is clear that the Witch School opposition itself has no significant opposition to check its active discriminatory bias against witches and by extension, against those it deems religiously unworthy by a particular Christian definition to exist or flourish within the community. As one resident, Kendra Smiley (author, speaker and member of the East Lynn United Methodist Church) puts it so bluntly:"It's not the kind of influence we want in our community."Clearly, not only does the community not want witches in its community, it also feels clearly no shame in telling us that.None of this is new to me as a resident of this rura
