In the June “Atlantic,” Ross Douthat on the possibility of redemption:
Bush’s hopes for vindication depend on the Middle East’s following a gradual, Fukuyaman track toward free markets, democratic government, and the “end of history.” And just as crucially, they depend on American troops’ staying in Iraq for as long as it takes for that to [...]
Short story: I think the Bush administration might switch from the Shi'ite's side to the Sunni's side in Iraq and in the Middle East region. Before I start, a few things you need to know:Iran = Shi'iteIraq's Government = Shi'iteSaudi Arabia = Sunnibin-Laden and Al Qaeda = SunniAl Anbar province = SunniSo General Petraeus gets up and testifies that we need to stay in Iraq. Big reason: things are working in al-Anbar province. Their story has been that this one sheik's tribe struck a deal with group Bush calls "al-Qeada in Iraq" and violence there has gone way down, due to (of course) the Americans.Of course, it's total bullshit. The violence stopped when we paid the local Sunni's to stop it. We also sat by while they killed and forcibly removed (aka ethnic cleansed) the Shi'ites in al-Anbar. Oh yeah, and that sheik that shook Bush's hand wasn't a sheik at all. For being a phony and helping Bush sell his story, he was assassinated on Thursday, September 21st, the same day Bush
This is an interesting piece by Bill Kristol and the points he makes, on a strictly intellectual level, are fairly accurate. I think he glosses over the negatives in Iraq and credits the Bush administration with victories that might not really be theirs to claim. As my friend Steve at Wake Up America has said Bushs biggest achievements are his Supreme Court placements of John Roberts and Sam Alito. This will have a profound effect on the direction of America for decades to come I have no doubt. Kristol was positive about the prescription entitlement program Bush got passed but I think its years too early to make any meaningful judgment on that programs real success and cost. One issue that Kristol did get dead on was that Bush will be primarily judged as a War President and obviously the outcome of Iraq will decide his success or failure in the eyes of history. The surge has shown itself to be a success I will agree so the inevitable question is why did we stick with Donal
The enemies of the Constitution are growing in number and are to be found now, not just in the White House and the Congress, but also in state capitals, from Washington to Vermont.
Not only do we have a president and vice president who are almost daily undermining and rending at the fabric of the Constitution. Not only do we have Democratic Party leaders actively barring the party’s elected representatives from standing up to the president by submitting bills of impeachment, as called for in the Constitution.
We now have Democratic Party leaders in state legislatures betraying Founder Thomas Jefferson, by sabotaging grassroots efforts to get joint legislative resolutions passed demanding the start of impeachment proceedings in the House.
Thomas Jefferson, a complex and personally deeply conflicted human being was, as a philosopher of government, incredibly prescient. Not only did he foresee the critical need for a section laying out the inalienable rights of man in the nation
If I were a chief of staff in the Bush administration, I would be worried. Of late, the line between "fall guy" and "stand-up guy" seems to be drawn at the chief of staff's door. Two chiefs have gone down in the last two weeks. First, Vice President Cheney's former top man, Scooter Libby, was convicted on four of five counts of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements. Meanwhile, Cheney remains (no matter that the prosecutor in the case said a cloud continues to hang over the vice president). This week, Kyle Sampson resigned as chief of staff to Alberto Gonzales for not disclosing the role of the White House in the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. Gonzales still has his job, and the president fully supports him (though the cloud over the attorney general could be picked up by Doppler).
