      WASPS
WASP STINGSI am sitting at the table in the kitchen nursing an injury. I was just doing some domestic chores when I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my right hand. It turns out that a sleepy wasp was hiding in the laundry and I had disturbed it. I quickly took action by getting a natural remedy from the kitchen cupboards. In my panic I got out the bicarbonate of soda and put that on it. It stung even

News from the Shipping Department - Invasion of the Wasps
From our Shipping Manager Darrin, who fights through the pain to make sure you get your order ASAP! I suggested we use his face as bait for the wasp invasion and spray Raid directly on his lovable mug, but he wisely declined. On to his tale.------------------------------This a little known fact here at Rittenhouse. Wasps are a very common occurrence as our yard is wide open connected to farms. We periodically bring large crates, frames etc to thaw out from the cold and unbeknownst to me a few of them have emerged in the warehouse where my department and my desk are. Now here at Rittenhouse we have many experts in the agriculture/home garden areas and I have been informed by these "experts" that wasps are very docile and that is even if they are moving at all in February. As I am told they al

      Wasps ground Qantas flights
A wasp plague has prevented three Qantas flights from taking off properly at the airport of Brisbane in Australia. This has become clear from a security report. The insects had made nests in parts of the Airbus A330-fleet of Qantas, as a result of which they disturbed the flight equipment. In one of the cases a plane had to make a stop while already taking off. This caused the brakes to overheat the tires, which in turn caused six out of eight tires to blow up. The airplane remained stranded on the tarmac. The pilot was forced to start the braking procedure while already traveling at a speed of 226 kph. In turn the brakes reached a temperature of 685 degrees. Since the incidents Qantas implemented a weekly wasp nest checkup on their fleet. read more here

Beetle, moth, frog, wasps, and lizards
I'm getting so far behind on posting my photos that I thought I would just stick some recent ones in a slide show without trying to identify them. If you know what they are, please let us know.Just a few explanations:The frog was found inside the house. It does not have hairy feet; it has sticky feet and apparently it was jumping around picking up Chloe's dog hair off the floor. The small lizard and the stick bug were also inside the house. The others were found outside. The long-horned beetle has me really worried. I did a little research and found this beetle on a Central American site which showed how it chops down trees! I didn't know that when I took the photo. Maybe that explains why we have had 6 or 7 very tall trees just fall down for no apparent reason.Hundreds of dying wasps were found on the front steps one morning. I looked up at the roof line but didn't see a nest. We don't spray so I don't know what was killing them.Blog contents copyright © 2006-2007 La Gringa. Al

      Even Wasps Need Beds
The next time you leave your room window open, you better think twice. Leaving a window open provides millions of opportunities for insects and bugs to enter your room. Without you knowing it, you may be surprised that some have made a home beside or under your bed already. Now that would be totally be uneasy to think of. Just take the case of this student for instance. Without considering what could possibly happen if you leave your room window open, she discovered a giant wasp’s nest on her bed. Apparently the wasps had eaten through the bed mattress and infested her room. So what is the best thing to do? Get rid of the bed! While this could have been prevented there are lessons learned. The next time around better double check if you closed the bedroom window. It is better so as to avoid uninvited guests like wasps or anything of the like. Wasps V Leinster
Heineken Cup Quarter-finals: Without Brian O'Discoll this was always going to be a tough match, and in the end Wasps outplayed the disapointed Irish province. Leinster were wobbly from the outset and Wasps took full advatage, scoring four tries.

      What WASPs Wear
I don't know how it happened, but I am now on the mailing list of the J. Peterman Company. Who knew this was even a real brand? For years I've seen the company and its creator mocked on the sitcom "Seinfeld." I was certain it was simply a fantastical product of script writers. But there in my mailbox was the Early Spring 2007 catalog.I flipped it open and found myself looking at the picture I've posted to the right. The description for this seemingly common shirt read as follows:May we put in a word for the much-bashed WASP?Industry, conscience, civic-mindedness, a whole-hearted belief (at best) in the level playing field...those aren't bad things. And neither are the clothes. These shirts, for example. The kind favored for casual wear by Skull-and-Bones members with little summer places on Fishers Island. The colors suggest a capacity to enjoy the good things in life. They don't shout about it though. They speak softly, which is how old money speaks. The shirt was priced at

      Wasps are coming back
I have wasps, every summer, it gets like WW3 Wasps vs. my family, and any poor soul that walks around my home. They are vicious buggers and a lot of them we fight them all summer long and they are ruthless, always coming back , not dieing, or whatever the hell they do, I think they have nine lives. In other news, my father goes into the hospital tomorrow, for we don't know how long, no worries, he seems to be fine, but the shakes I mentioned before have got to the point where they are unbearable for him. It gives him so much pain, he can't deal with it anymore, so they are admitting him into a cuckoo hospital for cuckoo and addicts, although he is not really either, but the OTC drugs he was on for so many years really messed him up, and the trying to get off of them on his own has not been easy. He lost that battle now, but hopefully this means he is on a better track in his life. That makes it on my list of Why I don't take medications. My auntie is still dealing with her mothers dea

Staunton leaving Wasps - But where to?
With a desire to get back into the Irish fold, Jeremy Staunton has announced his intention to leave London Wasps at the end of the current season. Whilst he has been in and out of the Wasps set-up this year and last, he has frequently been played out of position. So, where will his travels take him? The rumour mill on Munsterfans.com suggest London Irish, but maybe a trip to France would be more in order for Staunton than the abbrasive rugby league that dominates the Guinness Premiership. Tracking Wasps With RFID Tags
We mentioned about the invisible (chipless) RFID ink, from Somark Innovations, being tested on cattle. What now? Information about the behavior of several wasps can now be aggregated, thanks to those small RFID tags fitted by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Movements of these wasps are monitored in real-time by sensors affixed at [...]
