Iran's Response to Western Warnings: 'First Strike,' 'Preemptive Attack,' Long-Range Ballistic Missiles, 'Asymmetric [Guerilla] Warfare'
As the Iranian nuclear crisis escalates, Iranian officials have stepped up their threats against the West. Although regime spokesmen have stressed that Iran's security doctrine is defensive, the threats issued by senior Iranian leaders and officials indicate that Iran's actual strategy for responding to a Western attack is taking on increasingly offensive and deterrent characteristics. While in February 2003, then-defense minister Ali Shamkhani stated, "Iran has a deterrent defensive doctrine, which means that it will in no way take an offensive measure... Iran's objectives are of a defensive nature," - the new strategy is gradually revealed in both deeds and statements by regime spokesmen. The offensive elements of this doctrine include a "first strike" and "preemptive attack"; the development of long-range ballistic missiles (the Qadr and the Ashura) with ranges of up to 2,000 km; and the development of an "asymmetrical [guerilla] warfare" tactic - that is, suicide bombings in the P

Here's the gist of it:"A military intelligence team repeatedly contacted the FBI in 2000 to warn about the existence of a U.S.-based terrorist cell that included the ringleader of the Sept. 11 attacks, according to a veteran Army intelligence officer who said he has decided to risk his career by discussing the information publicly. The officer, Lt. If you take Cialis and develop cardiac symptoms (for example, dizziness, nausea, and chest pain) during sexual activity, do not continue. Alert your doctor to the problem as soon as possible. Because Cialis has not been studied in people with cardiovascular disease, it’s best to avoid Cialis if you’ve had a stroke or heart failure within the past 6 months, or a heart attack within the past 3 months. Be equally cautious if you have severe high or low blood pressure, heartbeat irregularities, or unstable angina (crushing heart pain that occurs at any time). If you develop angina after taking Cialis, seek medical attention immediately. If you have severe kidney or liver problems, a bleeding disorder, stomach ulcer, or an inherited retinal disorder such as retinitis pigmentosa, use Cialis with caution. Its safety under these circumstances has not yet been studied. Rare case

It was announced yesterday that a second company was preparing to provide software that would unlock the Apple iPhone and allow it to be used on any GSM network worldwide. The announcement, which came from mobile phone unlocking company UniquePhones, promised the software would be available to consumers today (August 25th), for a price between $25 and $50. The initial team, which proved their iPhone unlocking software works, iPhoneSIMfree.com has not yet publically released their software. They have, however, unlocked phones for press outlets. Their delay in releasing would have made the Uniquephones solution the first publically available unlocking tool. Unfortunately, alleged legal warnings from AT&T via a law firm out of Silicon Valley, have seemingly put a halt on the process. According to the project's blog, It is now 12N EST – the time when we said we would be offering iphone unlocking software to our customers. We have the software. It works. And we are ready to go. DIABETES DRUGS TO GET 'BLACK BOX' WARNINGS
Some popular drugs increase risk of heart failureManufacturers of certain drugs approved to treat Type 2 diabetes have agreed to add a stronger warning on the risk of heart failure, a condition that occurs when the heart does not adequately pump blood. The information will be included in the form of a “boxed” warning -- the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s strongest warning. The upgraded warning emphasizes that the drugs may cause or worsen heart failure in certain patients. After a review of postmarketing adverse event reports, FDA determined that an updated label with a boxed warning on the risks of heart failure was needed for the entire thiazolidinedione class of antidiabetic drugs. This class includes Avandia ( rosiqlitazone), Actos (pioglitazone) Avandaryl (rosiglitazone and glimepiride), Avandamet (rosiglitazone and metformin), and Duetact (pioglitazone and glimepride).Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/08/fda_diabetes_drugs.html~Sandy G.

      CCIA Targets Bogus Copyright Warnings
Copyright warnings - like those "FBI Warnings" on DVDs, stickers on CDs, and warnings flashed during NFL broadcasts - are becoming increasingly common.Trouble is, most of these warnings are blatantly misleading claiming that any and all unauthorized uses are forbidden by law. Of course, copyright has always allowed lots of unauthorized uses, including fair uses. They are also annoying, and in the case of DVDs, unskippable.Last Wednesday, the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), asking the Commission to take a number of major corporations to task for their misleading and intimidating copyright warnings.Targets include: the NFL, Major League Baseball, DreamWorks, Morgan Creek (producers of "The Good Shepherd"), and the book publishers, Harcourt and Penguin.CCIA's also started a petition that will be sent to the FTC - sign it here:http://defendfairuse.org/take_action.htmlRead the CCIA complaint:http://defendfairu

NASA Ignored Warnings of Drunk Astronaut
More in depth info on the inebriated astronauts issue. Considering the heritage of astronauts this should come as a shocker to no one. Thats just the way it has always been. ~RJH Washington Post story link NASA Ignored Warnings of Drunk Astronaut By Marc KaufmanWashington Post Staff WriterFriday, July 27, 2007; 4:46 PMNASA officials at least twice disregarded warnings from flight surgeons and astronauts that a crew member who was getting ready to go into space appeared to be drunk, the chairman of a panel appointed to examine the agency's handling of astronauts' physical and mental health said today. In one case, the apparently impaired astronaut went into space on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, while the other involved a scrubbed space shuttle flight and a subsequent flight on a NASA training aircraft."These two incidents of alcohol use were chosen to illustrate a larger prob

      Health Warnings on Your Fingernails?
I have recently had the moons on my index fingernails begin to peep back into existence. They had disappeared long ago, and as far as I could tell, had disappeared with the same speed that ridges on my fingernails had developed.I remember looking at my fingernails one night several years ago and wondering, “When did my nails stop being smooth?”Because I had been worried about ongoing problems, I hadn’t been paying attention to myself and as stress mounted, manicures were the last thing on my mind.Perhaps because it seemed appropriate that hurdle-high ridges had appeared on my fingernails, matching the mounting hurdles in my life, I wondered if the ridges could be related to health. It would take nearly two years for me to learn that the ridges were a result of low vitamin B12; not a “B12 deficiency” exactly, because at 241, my serum blood level was in the low normal range and nothing to worry about, according to my doctor. But after my feet and hands were frequently tingling a

Bali, the lush Indonesian island famous for its sun-kissed beaches, is drawing tourists in droves, and travel warnings that Islamic militants might strike again has done little to dampen the spirit. Almost five years after 202 people were killed in the bombing of a Bali nightclub, tourists are back enjoying the island's nightlife and soaking up the sun on Bali's palm-fringed beaches."That was a sad event but Bali is too beautiful to resist. The place is bouncing back," said 23-year-old Australian Josh Donnelly as he walked past the now razed Sari Club, which was blown up in the 2002 bombing. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued an upgraded travel advisory on July 8, warning Australians that terrorists were actively planning attacks, including on Bali. But despite these warnings, Australians who make up more than 15 percent of the total foreign tourist arrivals in Bali, are flocking to one of their favorite destinations. The island saw a 34 percent jump i

New Zealanders ignore Fiji travel warnings
Political unrest has grown steadily since Commodore Bainimarama overthrew the government in December 2006. There have been calls for a return to democracy, and, with the expulsion of New Zealand's High Commissioner to Fiji, the Pacific Island nation has invited the wrath of the New Zealand government. Last week the government confirmed an extension of travel sanctions against Fiji which now means that high ranking public servants cannot transit through New Zealand. The sanctions are in addition to those imposed last year in which members of Fiji's interim government, its supporters and members of the military were prevented from entering the country.

Boarding Your Dog: Tips and Warnings
With summer vacations fast approaching, and having to make a decision on where to kennel my own crew for an upcoming annual family vacation, I’d like to share some tips and warnings on where and how to leave your pets behind. Years back, I started with a highly recommended dog boarding kennel that I will never, ever use again! From there, I went to a kennel I adored that had been recommended by a dog-trainer friend, then moved on to a dog trainer who pet-sits, then tried to find someone who also house-sits, to alternating with Andrew on who stays home and who goes, to considering boarding again. We’ve been around the Mulberry bush with all of it. Why all the changes? My dogs’ experiences and needs have changed over the years. I’ll share my worst and best experiences first before I offer tips and warnings. The first kennel I tried with Kiera and Magic came recommended by a friend. I should have wondered when they didn’t offer to have me tour the facilities,

China Bubble: Investors Ignore Stock Market Warnings
From Daily ReckoningGovernment officials are worried. Chinas Securities Regulatory Commission posted this warning on its website: "Investors should be fully aware that there exists no stock on earth whose prices surge and never slump." At one time public warnings would have been enough to trigger a sharp sell-off in the market, but investors are now ignoring them. Fundamental valuations are ignored in a bubble. In other words we are in the realms of momentum investing, when traders follow and then accelerate an existing trend. And this momentum can be extraordinary when the participants are ordinary Chinese people who spot a chance to make some money. This is a far more virulent and dangerous speculative bubble than say the UK housing market...[Read more]

US Press Silent on Brzezinski’s Warnings Of War Against IranWatch the video ...Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Brzezinski predicts provoking war with Iran. He calls the Iraq War a Historic, Strategic and Moral Calamity. If the United States continues to be bogged down in a protracted bloody involvement in Iraq, the final destination on this downhill track is likely to be a head-on conflict with Iran and with much of the world of Islam at large.A plausible scenario for a military collision with Iran involves Iraqi failure to meet the benchmarks; followed by accusations of Iranian responsibility for the failure; then by some provocation in Iraq or a terrorist act in the U.S. blamed on Iran; culminating in a "defensive" U.S. military action against Iran that plunges a lonely America into a spreading and deepening quagmire eventually ranging across Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Why is the US press silent on Brzezinski

FDA wants antidepressant suicide warnings for young adults
I think this is a really important move the FDA is proposing to make. The proposal is for all makers of antidepressants to update their existing black box warning on product labeling with information about increased risks of suicidal thinking and behavior in young adults. During initial treatment of depression, young adults aged between 18 and 24 on antidepressants face a substantial increased risk of experiencing suicidal tendencies. The proposed warning statements will emphasize that depression and certain other serious psychiatric disorders are themselves the most important causes of suicide. I believe this is such a vital change to make. I’ve seen and heard many parents who had no idea their children were at a higher risk of suicide while taking antidepressants, only to have the devastating realisation that something was terribly wrong after the fact. Many believe that if their kids are taking medication that things are better or at the very least, improving. If they are m

Suicide warnings on antidepressants a grave error
Suicides will spike and those sad souls suffering from depression will be scared away from antidepressants if the FDA's plan to affix suicide risk warning labels to the drugs goes through, local experts warned. "Suicide rates will go up. The loss of days from work will go up. Hospitalizations will go up and suffering will go up,"' said Dr. Alexander J. Bodkin, director of the Clinical Psychopharmacology Research Program at Harvard Medical School and psychiatry professor at McLean Hospital. More...   ©2006 Boston HeraldComment:  By all accounts Wednesday's FDA committee meeting on antidepressants and suicide was emotionally charged. The mental health professionals argued for no or minimal changes in labeling, the case for more extensive changes consisted mainly of family members of completed suicides appealing for availability to be restricted. If media reports are accurate it appears emotion has held sway. Sadly, it may become a pyrrhic victory for included in Wednesday's testimon

Call for traffic warnings in English
This is a GOOD idea! I have driven on the freeways here in the Netherlands and the signs that are lit up with current traffic information are in Dutch only. I would appreciate a translation into English. Apparently the insurance industry agrees. Here is the article from the Expatica website:AMSTERDAM - Warnings aimed at drivers should be broadcast in languages other than Dutch as well, it was argued on Wednesday. Insurance company TVM, which insures some 40 percent of the transport in the Netherlands, is urging multilingual warnings after the many accidents involving freight lorries during the severe storm last week. TVM reports that one third of the accident claims it received involving lorries last week involved a foreign driver. Professional drivers could be warned of problems like the storm last week in their own language on the information boards above and along the motorways and via the radio. "The increasing internationalisation of road transport means that a warning in Dutc

New study supports fish as brain food for babies despite prior FDA warnings to limit intake during pregnancy.
According to a study published Friday February 16, 2007 in the British journal The Lancet, pregnant women who eat 12 or more ounces of fish per week have children with higher IQ's. The study found that pregnant women who ate on average more than 340 grams of fish per week had children with IQ scores significantly higher than those who ate less fish during pregnancy. In the U.S. more than 340 grams of fish per week is equivalent to eating 1 ½ to 2 servings of fish in the typical U.S. restaurant. A 3-ounce serving is about the size of the palm of your hand or a deck of playing cards and is equivalent to approximately 85 grams. The typical chain restaurant in the U.S. serve 8-10 ounces of fish as an entre whereas higher end restaurants typically serve 6 ounces. Six ounces of fish is 170 grams and eight ounces is 227 grams.
