      Refresher on age discrimination waivers
Yesterday, we looked at Coryell v. Bank One Trust, which found that the offering of a severance package could constitute evidence of a constructive discharge. Even though the employee was losing his job as part of a corporate reorganization, the court believed a question existed as to whether he had any meaningful choice but to accept the severance package. As I mentioned yesterday, the lawsuit

LOAN WAIVERS, SUICIDES AND FIVE STAR MEALS.
P Chidamabaram, a sane, educated and sensible politician, has done what the ‘illiterate’ Devi Lal had once done, to literally buy votes. In the Union Budget presented on February 29, 2008, he took the wind out of the opposition’s everything by announcing a jumbo waiver of all loans taken by small farmers from banks. The bill: a whopping Rs 60,000 crores! Much to the surprise of all, as soon as the announcement was made, ‘farmers’ from neighbouring Harayana landed up at the residence of not the Finance Minister who made the dramatic announcement but of Sonia Gandhi, to thank her! How ordinary, poor farmers came to know immediately that Sonia Gandhi was the one to thank and how they had the presence of mind and the motivation to rush to Delhi to do so is one of the great myster

Recchi placed on re-entry waivers / Atlanta signs him
So this was something I wasn't aware of. If Recchi is picked up by a team now, they will only have to pay half of his salary. This is probably why Recchi was placed on re-entry waivers. So other teams could get him at a bargain. No doubt, teams have been inquiring about Recchi since he cleared waivers this week and that is why the Kamloops native is being called back up.Now the waiver priority rule applies. As the current standings are, the worst team gets the first priority to sign him. That would put Washington in the driver's seat. If Caps management had any brains, they would take him. Washington needs something more, especially a veteran. But don't count on GM George to sign Recchi. There are rumors that Phoenix, San Jose and Carolina are interested in his services. Like Spector says: expect Recchi to have a new home by noon eastern tomorrow. And that...is a good thing.**Way to go, Don Waddell. The Thrashers have signed Recchi. Wise move. As for the 10 teams that declined: you'

Penguins place Mark Recchi on waivers
Recchi has only 2 goals and 6 assists in 19 games played this year. He has been a healthy scratch in 7 of his last 8 games. But that doesn't mean that Recchi is done like dinner though. He can still put up better numbers than that, even if he is 39 years old. He still has blazing speed and good hands. Last season with Pittsburgh, he scored 24 goals and 68 points in 82 games. Not bad at all.In his regular season career, he has 510 goals and 1341 points in 1357 games. Recchi has 47 goals and 117 points in 140 career playoff games. He won a Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 1991 (34 points in 24 games) and also with the Hurricanes in 2006 (16point in 25 games.)Recchi is a leader. He is still a good value at $2 million per season. I cannot see anyone passing on this guy.....yet. I'd welcome him in Vancouver. You?T Tags: Penguins Recchi+put+on+waivers

Jets Claim DE Kareem Brown Off Waivers
According to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe, the New York Jets have claimed DE Kareem Brown off waivers from the Patriots. The report states that the Ravens and 49ers also had placed a claim on Brown, but the Jets won the claim due to their worst record amongst the three teams. Brown was a fourth-round draft choice by the Patriots this past April. He has not played in a game this season and was expected to be signed to the Patriots practice squad if he cleared waivers. Here is his scouting report via Frank Coyle of DraftInsiders.com. The good: Brown is a strong, wide-bodied tackle with good size, mobility and power that translates well to the playing field. He has good initial quickness that allows him to penetrate the backfield and fill the holes against the run. He has very large, long arms and is a solid physical specimen. He is a well-built lineman with natural skills to rank him among the upper echelon of prospects. The bad: He has been inconsistent on the field. Early in his care

Brian Burke's comments about putting Bryzgalov on waivers
Found Burke's comments on the Ducks' home site through a conference call. Worth a read.“He’s been great. He has not asked for a trade. This whole schematic here is mine. He never came to me and said, ‘I want out.’ His agent never said ‘I want out.’ When we signed Hiller during the playoffs, you didn’t hear a word out of Bryz. We gave Giguere the four-year deal with a no-trade clause and you didn’t hear a word out of Bryz. He’s been terrific. "I think organizations need to have reputations for honest answers with their players. And since this player came through for us: he won three playoff rounds in the last two years, he’s a quality person who helped us win, then he deserves to go somewhere else and play. The market has not materialized and I’m keeping my word today.”On goaltending situation in the NHL:“I think that’s why there are questions. It’s probably hard to believe that this is the best that I can do (waivers). I am puzzled by it. This is a sala

      Ducks put Bryzgalov on waivers
Wow. I guess the Ducks have been trying to unload Breezy via trade and there have not been any takers. He only makes $1.36 million right now and becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, where I'm sure he'll be a pain in the ass and demand big money. This is a shocking move regardless. So who would/should take Bryzgalov right now?I've got a list in order.1. Penguins. Fleury is inconsistent and Sabourin, regardless of his little mini-run he's add is beginning to show his true colors. A Breezy-Fleury combo in Pittsburgh not only seems right, it reminds me of Dairy Queen for some reason, and makes me hungry.2. Thrashers. Take some heat off of Kari Lehtonen.3. Coyotes. Tellqvist is good. Auld is bad. Breezy could take over the #1 job there.4. Lightning. Marc Denis is still floundering in Tampa while Holmqvist excels. A Holmqvist-Bryzgalov combo ensures that goatending will not be an issue in Tampa this year.In some ways I can understand how teams won't take him, as he w

Boulerice put on waivers / Edler recalled
"It caught me off guard," Kesler said Monday. "I didn't know who it was at first."He (Boulerice) introduced himself and asked me how I felt. I was taken back." Needless to say, Boulerice was put on waivers by the Flyers today, despite his apologies to Kesler for the brutal cross check to the jaw. Hell, why pay a goon his salary for 25 games that he isn't going to play? Odds are, Boulerice will not be claimed and will not see anymore NHL icetime this year, or maybe ever. That will please a lot of goon skeptics I'm sure. The Canucks have recalled Alex Edler today and he will play tonight against the Sharks. I guess that puts little Mike Weaver in the press box doesn't it? Or maybe Krajicek is out.Matt Cooke, who was a healthy scratch last game will play tonight.Oh yeah, and the Canucks will win 3-2 tonight. Not sure how much of the game I can watch tonight, as it is hectic at work. T Tags: Boulerice+put+on+waivers Edler+recalled

      Miguel Tejada Put on Waivers...
Well, Miguel Tejada was placed on waivers not too after the trade deadline, read this by ESPN’s Buster Olney… Baltimore's Miguel Tejada and Oakland's Mike Piazza, two major stars mentioned in trade rumors during the summer, hit the waiver wire in the last week -- and one is now in a position to be dealt in August, while the other is not. Tejada was claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox, who may be looking for a shortstop as they consider whether or not to pick up the 2008 option on current shortstop Juan Uribe, who is hitting .215 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs. But the Orioles and White Sox did not work out a deal to allow Tejada to go to Chicago. The Orioles will keep Tejada for the rest of the year, sources say. Now do we think Tejada stays or goes in the offeason? Granted, a lot of teams put players on waivers to gauge their interest on the market after every trade deadline each year; however, are we assured now that Miggy’s time in Baltimore may be coming to

Waivers again debated by Pike County school board
The issue of transferring students between neighboring school districts was debated Tuesday evening. As of 2005, the board set a cap on student transfers at 340.Last year, the school board granted waivers allowing 369 students to attend city school, an additional 29 students over the limit. The school system loses $3,500 for each student it loses to other schools. Some members believed theboard should show more flexibility in those numbers. Member J.C. Cheney said there should be marginal room beyond the cap in the interest of parents' wishes. “I don't see anything wrong with going over by ten,” Chaney said.McGuire said the board needed to show no flexibility toward the issue. This from the Appalachian News-Express.

Yahoo News story link Military grants more waivers to recruitsBy LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer Wed Feb 14, 2:22 AM ET WASHINGTON - The Army and Marine Corps are letting in more recruits with criminal records, including some with felony convictions, reflecting the increased pressure of five years of war and its mounting casualties. According to data compiled by the Defense Department, the number of Army and Marine recruits needing waivers for felonies and serious misdemeanors, including minor drug offenses, has grown since 2003. The Army granted more than double the number of waivers for felonies and misdemeanors in 2006 than it did in 2003. Some recruits may get more than one waiver. The military routinely grants waivers to admit recruits who have criminal records, medical problems or low aptitude scores that would otherwise disqualify them from service.
