Long Island Spirits Inc. of Baiting Hollow, N.Y., is the first licensed distillery on Long Island since the 1800s after receiving federal and New York state permits to begin production. The company plans to begin distilling LiV vodka, using 9,000 pounds of Long Island potatoes per batch. The European Union has issued a ruling on vodka that angers some and leaves others feeling a bit like their glasses are half full. What do you expect when the politicians of several different countries spend more than two years negotiating a settlement?Scandinavian and eastern European countries had wanted the term vodka to be reserved for neutral spirits made using grains or potatoes. Producers in other countries fought this because some use grapes, sugar cane and other raw ingredients. The EU answer is that potato and grain spirits can be labeled simply as "Vodka," while the other neutral white spirits can be labeled as "Vodka Made With ________." The EU also put in place protections for using the terms Scotch Whisky and London Gin on labels. Spirits companies have alternating taking sides on the issues, at some points trying to fight cheap foreign knock offs, while at other times trying to make sure some of the products they make don't run afoul of the proposed regulations.

Anheuser-Busch has a new premium vodka on the market.  It is going by the name Purus.  Kind of sounds like a car to me.  I am sure they chose Purus because they are marketing this as a 100% organic vodka.  It is made from Alpine water and they use 100% organic Italian wheat.  There are no pesticides or fertilizers used in the growing of the wheat.  If you go to their website you can even have them plant a tree for you.  Mr. Mai Tai did his part and had a tree planted in the Purus Forrest.  I am not sure where this forrest is but if you happen to find it look for my tree.  I don’t know if Al Gore drinks vodka but if he did he would probably drink Purus.

After over four months of working at Rosenblum Cellars, I finally made it over to St. George Spirits, home of Hangar One vodka. The online news media is reporting that students who drink energy drink cocktails are more likely to mess themselves up than people who just drink regular old booze. About a quarter of those who took the survey reported mixing an energy drink with their booze within the past 30 days.
