The Stradivarius Violin Secreats Finally Decoded Via CT Scan
For three centuries people have been trying to reproduce the violins that Antonio Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesu crafted. None knew how these violins were able to produce their characteristic sweet sound. Now scientists used CT scans (technique for scanning lung tissue) and found that the wood density is probably the key to the Stradivarius [...]

Phone Photo Op - The Best Worst Violin Player

The guild founded in 1586 has protected these obscure classical solo violin pieces dating back from the late 17th to the early 20th century. Tomaso Albinoni - Oboe and Violin Concertos (1993)
A művek:1. Here's some photos (finally) of Erik Christensen's fabulous Ronald Ho guitar. The flame maple back and sides are amazing, and the detail work is very nice. The logo is unique, and the label is interesting, simply his PO Box in Port Townsend. Hopefully someday we'll learn more about this wonderful luthier. Until then, I guess Rockhoppers Daily Grind is the internet showplace for his work. Che played his Warren Davis six-string electric violin. It's a very odd-looking instrument, but note the beauty of the body -- nice piece of wood there. Odd luthier work on Whidbey Island.

      Giftige Spinnen - Violin Spider

Day Two: While her violin gently wept
As the concerts officially began at this year’s 33rd Year Art Festival, the crowd poured in at the auditorium. Since it was a Sunday, the audience participation on day two seemed more than promising! With enthralling performances by the Mandolin sisters Srisha & Shri Usha, this truly proved to be an evening drenched in musical harmonies. The standout performance of the day for me was violinist Akkarai Subbhalakshmi who captivated us with her steering compositions.Despite not knowing too much about Carnatic music, Subbhalakshmi’s instrumentation definitely made its mark on my aural senses with a gentle balance between rare charm and her insightful knowledge of Carnatic classicism.Truly inspiring.TAGS:December music season 2007, Carnatic, violinist, Mandolin sisters

Breaking New Ground by Breaking-In a New Violin
By Rhiannon Schmitt It's a well-known and respected fact among strings players that new violins and other stringed instruments have to be broken-in with play for the tone to develop.Though there are many theories which attempt to explain it and there is validity behind the science but we honestly don't know why they require breaking-in. No matter the reasoning it's a no-brainer we string players accept without precise explanation and trust simply from pure experience.Anyone who has purchased a violin fresh from the maker has witnessed amazing tonal maturity as the instrument is played regularly. A player see this change within the first few days or even hours of playing a quality new instrument. The tone will warm-up and become more rounded and deep.Even more tonal maturity is easily apparent after 6 months and a violin is considered fully mature after a couple years of play. The longer you play it each day, the faster you will witness the tone improving.I had a new violin which cha

What do you know about the violin?
We dropped the saxophone off at the music shop today. My four-year old saw the violins hanging on the wall and said, “I want dat.” The shop owner sang, “Violins are cheaper than saxophones.” But, like, DUH. I already have a saxophone. So that makes a violin more expensive than something I already own, dude. My little guy is serious about this, I think. We got a note from preschool today telling us we got our first choice of session. I told him, “Hey! You get to go to school!” He said, “I go to school and pway widdle guitar!” Now I need some help. (Yes, I could ask the shop owner but I’m a skeptic when the other person is interested in my wallet.) I know that violins come in different sizes, are generally cheaper than saxophones I don’t own and are squeaky in the hands of a novice. Also, they are not convenient for marching. What else?

      The 'New' Violin Family
Bass Blog reader Trevor Bortins sent me a link to this very interesting site about the "new" violin family known as the the violin octet. I have done some reading and heard some musical examples regarding this set of acoustically well-proportioned instruments, and the logic behind these instruments is quite clear. Invented in the early 20th century as a result of physicist Frederick A. Saunders' research into violin acoustics, the instruments that make up the "violin family" share the same acoustical traits:The eight instruments form a family with basic traits in common, but each member has its own individual personality. The homogeneity of sound is the result of adjustments in body length and other physical characteristics so that each instrument has its so-called main wood resonance and main air resonance near the two open middle strings (as is the case with the Heifetz Guarnerius violin). In the five higher instrum
