Solar panels on top keep the machine’s refrigerator running, and a rechargeable battery provides power at night or during prolonged cloudy periods. This is a Dutch scheme where bikes are stored in a vending type machine and whoever wants to hire one simply pays the set amount and rides the bike to the nearest vending machine to where they are wishing to get to.
There are a couple of schemes like this, but this one seems to be run on a better system than the others because this one works on a more user friendly way. Before anyone thinks about riding off with the bike, they are fitted with a RFID which tracks the bike should it be stolen and also logs all the journeys.

Last weekend I drove up to Iowa City with my wife and daughter. We took the back roads for a change. I stopped and asked directions at one point and saw this vending machine for live bait. The first thing I thought of was Gary Larson. I imagine he would have taken that moment to draw up a cartoon of a people vending machine on some alien planet. Complete with little chubby people, trapped inside, staring through the glass.
I was at the New Carrolton metro station this morning, and immediately got thirsty for some reason. My thirst led me to the Amtrack waiting area of the station, where all of the vending machines are located.
