Physicians have confirmed that in recent times the number of flu cases being detected in clinics has gone up. In the face of this it has become clear that flu vaccination is a good thing and should be administered as early as possible. For example, people over the age of 30 are able to move around and do not suffer much if they are administered the flu vaccine. This is in sharp contrast to younger people (over 30) who do not receive a vaccination and suffer from body pains, high fever, and are often bed ridden for more than a week. Pneumonia Increase Linked to Vaccine
A life-threatening form of pneumonia that affects children is rising rapidly in Britain. Cases of the pneumonia, known as serotype 1, have risen tenfold in a decade. This severe form of pneumonia infects the lining of the lungs called the pleura, making it hard to breathe. The cause of the increase is unknown, but experts fear a vaccine could be contributing. A vaccine against pneumococcal disease called Prevenar, introduced in 2006, could be fuelling the rise. The vaccine is given at two, four and 13 months. There are more than 90 known strains of the bacterium that causes pneumonia, and when one is eliminated by the vaccine, it creates an opportunity for another to take its place. In the U.S., where Prevenar was introduced in 2000, researchers have reported an emergence of "sero-replace

      The Vaccine Book
As soon as I read this book my first thought was: Where was this 16 months ago! While I was pregnant I researched many things about parenthood, and vaccines topped the list. But try as I might, I was not able to find any information that I felt was helpful. There were definietly two sides to the issue, but they offered data in direct opposition to each other while each claiming that following their advice over the "propaganda" of the other side was a matter of life or death. This was insane, and utterly unhelpful. So I turned next to friends, but found essentially more of the same. Some were strongly on one side, and others were strongly on the other. Many felt like throwing their hands up as I did.Next, I turned to my Doctors and Chiropractor, all of whom I respected. They walked me through some of the pros and cons, and told me what they had done for their own children. But in all of this, I never felt that I was being given well researched data. Opinions, repeated opinions, and

USF makes meningitis vaccine a must
It’s official: Starting in January, any University of South Florida student who moves into campus housing must be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis, the disease that killed a USF sophomore earlier this year. USF President Judy Genshaft sent a letter over the Thanksgiving break to about 36,000 students, notifying them of the new policy. Genshaft, a mother of two, demanded the vaccine be made mandatory after Rachel Futterman’s September death, which also prompted the board that oversees Florida's 11 universities to examine vaccine policies statewide. So far, USF is the first to make the vaccine mandatory for campus residents. “Together we can make decisions to avoid another such tragedy,” Genshaft wrote. “Your wellness is our primary concern.” Students who already have housing contracts through the spring are exempt for now, but will have to get the vaccine before signing any new contract. Genshaft’s letter urges all students to “take action now.” Wednesday,

Kids' Vaccine Market Set To Quadruple
The market for pediatric and adolescent vaccines is set to grow four-fold over the next decade.Following the success of Prevnar, a high-priced vaccine for the prevention of pneumococcal disease in infants, expensive vaccines targeting teens and infants are likely to become increasingly prominent. Prevnar, costing almost $320 for four doses, had global sales of $1.9 billion in 2006. In 2006, pediatric and adolescent vaccines were worth approximately $4.3 billion, but new high-priced vaccines could raise this figure to over $16 billion by 2016.

Maker of Cervical Cancer Vaccine Stops Pushing to Require It for Girls
This week, the drug company Merck announced that it would end a lobbying campaign for Gardasil, its new vaccine for girls and women. The vaccine is designed to protect against four kinds of human papillomavirus, or HPV. These cause about seventy percent of cervical cancers and ninety percent of genital warts. The development of the vaccine has been widely praised. But Merck faced growing criticism for its push for states to require schoolgirls to be vaccinated with Gardasil. The company says the criticism was interfering with its goal of widespread use of the vaccine. The United States Food and Drug Administration approved Gardasil last June for females age nine to twenty-six.At least twenty of the fifty state legislatures have begun to consider some form of Gardasil requirement. In Texas, Governor Rick Perry has ordered that beginning in two thousand eight, girls eleven and twelve years old must be vaccinated with Gardasil. After two years of shortages, the Centers for Disease Control reports there appears to be plenty of vaccine on hand. The CDC says the nation′s influenza vaccine manufacturers report that more than 103 million doses of flu vaccine had been distributed as of November 2 — an amount that represents more doses than had ever previously been distributed at this date.“This is good news. Influenza vaccine appears to be more widely available than ever before, and we want people who should be receiving an annual flu vaccination to be sure that they do,” said Dr. Jeanne Santoli, deputy director of CDC′s Immunization Services Division.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/11/flu_shot.html~Sandy G.

Chickenpox Vaccine is Bad for Children
In this Daily Telegraph article, UK doctor Richard Halvosen is concerned by the recent call for all children to be inoculated against chickenpox. Chickenpox is relatively harmless, with most children suffering only a few uncomfortable days. Chickenpox causes serious complications in fewer than 1 in 10,000 children. Chickenpox inoculation will push the disease into older age groups, who will catch the disease when their vaccine-induced immunity wears off -- a problem already seen with inoculations for mumps. The complications of chickenpox are much greater in older people; adults are 10 to 100 times more likely to die from the illness than children are. Vaccinations are also likely to increase the number of people getting shingles, which are far more serious than chickenpox.Halvosen argues that vaccines are being introduced too readily and without regard for long–term consequences. He points out that there is a plausible link between the rise in vaccinations and the recent rise in imm

Merck HIV Vaccine Increases Risk of HIV Infection
Merck has been testing a candidate HIV vaccine in two large phase II clinical trials; the STEP study in North and South America, the Caribbean and Australia, and a parallel study called Phambili in South Africa. STEP was a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase II test-of-concept clinical trial. Started in December 2004, enrollment in the study was completed by March 2007 and more than 2,500 participants had received all three doses of vaccine or placebo. STEP was evaluating two primary efficacy endpoints: Whether the vaccine prevented HIV infection in subjects who were HIV negative at the beginning of the study. Whether the vaccine lowered the amount of virus in subjects who became HIV infected during the course of the study. However, last month the drug trial was halted because the vaccine appeared to be increasing the risk of HIV infection among study participants. The South African study Phambili, which began in 2007 using the same vaccine has been halt

New Malaria Vaccine 35 Percent Ineffective in Infants Under 1 Year Old, Study Finds
The world’s most promising malaria vaccine has been shown to work in infants less than a year old, the most vulnerable group, according to a study being published today. The study, being published in The Lancet, a British medical journal, was small, comprising only 214 babies in Mozambique, and intended to show only that the vaccine was safe at such young ages. But it also indicated that the risk of catching malaria was reduced by 65 percent after the full course of three shots. “We’re now a step closer to the realization of a vaccine that can protect African infants,” said Dr. Pedro Alonso, the University of Barcelona professor who leads clinical trials of the GlaxoSmithKline vaccine.Sources:New York Times October 18, 2007

College health directors want meningitis vaccine for all
The student health directors for Florida's 11 public universities are recommending that all incoming students - not just those moving into dorms or campus Greek houses - be required to get the meningitis vaccine. And while there should still be exemptions for religious or personal reasons, health directors said Wednesday they believe too many students are being granted waivers. Their recommendations come just days after a 19-year-old USF student died of bacterial meningitis. USF officials can't disclose whether Rachel Futterman got her vaccine, but USF president Judy Genshaft wants to make it mandatory for all students, starting as early as January if the university has the authority to do so. A Board of Governors committee is voting on the recommendations this afternoon, and if approved they'll go on to the full board during its meeting in Tallahassee tomorrow.

Doctors in Denial About Vaccine Reactions?
After 25 years, the public debate about forced vaccination has become a passionate dialogue about children who have been hurt or died from infectious diseases and children who have been hurt or died from reactions to mandated vaccines. Mothers and fathers, armed with a memory of watching a beloved child regress into poor health after complications from an infectious disease or complications from a vaccination, describe how their children died or became crippled mentally and physically. The only difference between them is that parents of children, whose injuries or deaths were due to infectious disease complications, are supported in their grief by influential leaders in academic medicine, government health agencies and the pharmaceutical industry while parents of children, whose injuries or deaths were due to vaccine complications, are ignored or criticized by opinion makers in society for speaking out about their grief. What is a vaccine?
Vaccinations are harmless agents, perceived as enemies. They are molecules, usually but not necessarily proteins, that elicit an immune response, thereby providing protective immunity against a potential pathogen. While the pathogen can be a bacterium or even a eukaryotic protozoan, most successful vaccines have been raised against viruses and here we shall deal mostly with anti-viral vaccines. Im
