Vaccine-Induced Polio Cases On the Rise in Nigeria
Polio cases have nearly doubled this year in the West African nation of Nigeria. Officials are struggling to fight various natural strains of the virus, as well as an outbreak set off by the polio vaccine itself three years ago. The vaccine-sparked outbreak has struck more than 100 children so far. There were also 106 new cases of polio caused by wild viruses, according to figures released by the World Health Organization. For every one paralyzed child, there are about 1,000 others infected and spreading the highly infectious and sometimes fatal disease.

1 in 5 Parents Refuse Daughters' Cervical Cancer Vaccine Injection
A trial program for cervical cancer vaccine in the UK has encountered opposition from parents, with 20 percent refusing to give permission for their daughters to have the injection. Many parents said that were worried about the long-term safety, on which there is no data. Others were concerned that allowing the vaccination could promote promiscuity, since the cancer-causing virus is passed through sexual intercourse. The pilot study included more than 2,800 girls aged 12 and 13 at 36 secondary schools in Greater Manchester.

TN vaccine deaths: Experts point finger at human error
All four children who died after being administered the measles vaccine in Tamil Nadu on April 23 suffered severe brain haemorrhage resulting from an anaphylactic shock, an inquiry has found. This will be pointed out by the five-member expert team sent by the health ministry to investigate the deaths, when they submit their initial report to health minister A Ramadoss on Monday. Experts in the team said an anaphylactic shock - a severe, potentially lethal systemic allergic reaction - following a measles vaccination is highly rare and occurs in 1 out of every 10 lakh cases.Experts in the team said that anaphylactic shock killing all four children - within half-an-hour of being administered the vaccine around the same area - pointed to two likely reasons of why the deaths occurred - a human e

The HPV Vaccine: Preventive Care or Human Sacrifice?
Reports of adverse reactions to the new HPV vaccine are escalating. One particularly heart-wrenching example is the story 12-year-old Brittany who recently lost all feeling in her leg and collapsed two weeks after receiving the Gardasil vaccine. Adding insult to injury, people who are injured by the vaccine cannot even sue Merck, the maker of the Gardasil vaccine, because it is part of the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund. While the FDA claims adverse reactions to Gardasil are rare, a review of the U.S.'s Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) data shows that several thousands of adverse reactions have been reported in the United States alone. Hundreds of Australian girls have experienced side effects like paralysis, dizzy spells and seizures, but Australia's Department o

Vaccine Blamed for the Worst Flu Season in Four Years
The current flu season is shaping up to be the worst in four years, partly because the vaccine didn't work well against the viruses that made most people sick. The 2007-2008 season started slowly, peaked in mid-February, and now seems to be declining. Based on adult deaths from flu and pneumonia, this season is the worst since 2003-2004. This year, the vaccine was only 44 percent effective, according to a study. Each year, the flu results in 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths.

      Pneumonia Increase Linked to Vaccine
A life-threatening form of pneumonia that affects children is rising rapidly in Britain. Cases of the pneumonia, known as serotype 1, have risen tenfold in a decade. This severe form of pneumonia infects the lining of the lungs called the pleura, making it hard to breathe. The cause of the increase is unknown, but experts fear a vaccine could be contributing. A vaccine against pneumococcal disease called Prevenar, introduced in 2006, could be fuelling the rise. The vaccine is given at two, four and 13 months. There are more than 90 known strains of the bacterium that causes pneumonia, and when one is eliminated by the vaccine, it creates an opportunity for another to take its place. In the U.S., where Prevenar was introduced in 2000, researchers have reported an emergence of "sero-replace

U.S. Government Seeks Input on Vaccine Questions
The U.S. government has begun an unprecedented effort to give vaccine critics a say in shaping how the nation researches safety questions surrounding immunizations. The effort comes amid renewed controversy about vaccines and autism, and a theory that vaccinations might worsen a rare condition called mitochondrial dysfunction that in turn triggers certain forms of autism. Federal health officials said the effort wasn't in response to that controversy, and encompasses many more questions than autism. They will look at issues ranging from rare side effects of the new shingles vaccine, to how to predict who might be at risk for encephalopathy sometimes triggered by other inoculations. A working group has been charged with picking the most important safety questions for the Centers for Disease

Vaccino contro il cancro della cervice uterina.Ci fidiamo? Vaccine against the cancer of the uterine nape.Shall we trust?

      Vaccine-Autism Question Divides Parents, Scientists
13-year old Michelle Cedillo is at the center of a court case pitting thousands of families of children with autism against the medical establishment. While a number of prestigious medical institutions say there is no link between vaccines and autism, the families believe vaccines caused their children's autism, and have taken their case to court. Theresa and Mike Cedillo, Michelle's parents, believe the MMR vaccine, which at the time contained a mercury-based preservative, drastically altered the course of their daughter's development. Within days of receiving the injection, Michelle suffered from a high fever, persistent vomiting and problems with her digestion -- and also stopped speaking and no longer responded to her name. Many doctors, however, argue that the apparent connection betw

US government sees overhaul of AIDS vaccine effort
BETHESDA, Maryland (Reuters, Mar 26 2008) - The U.S. government began a major overhaul of its effort to produce an AIDS vaccine on Tuesday, stressing a return to basic scientific research after the failure of a key clinical trial last year.Government officials at a summit with AIDS scientists pledged to prioritize spending on lab work and animal tests rather than expensive, and thus far disappointing, large-scale vaccine trials on humans."We need to turn the knob in the direction of discovery. That is unambiguous," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who convened the meeting outside of Washington."We really do need new and novel ideas."The vaccine summit follows the failure last year of an experimental HIV vaccine developed by Merc

How Vaccine Companies Use Fear to Increase Vaccinations
The disturbing site linked below encourages vaccinations -- this is unsurprising, since it is sponsored by a vaccine division of Sanofi Pasteur. It is a particularly good example of how vaccine companies prey on the fears of parents. It features a frightened-looking baby next to the words, “I can catch pertussis from you, mom, and it can be serious.” The site also features links to the sound of a whopping cough, and says that you should, “Make sure your family and friends get vaccinated” since “anyone who spends time with your baby may pass on pertussis ... [including] childcare providers, household help, and your friends.”
