British Columbia has slapped an official moratorium on uranium exploration and development in the province, reinforcing a long-standing informal ban on the nuclear fuel and dashing the hopes of companies that hoped to take advantage of soaring prices for the commodity. The ban, announced yesterday, makes B.C. a no-go zone for uranium and confirms a moratorium put in place in 1980 by a previous government responding to anti-nuclear sentiment in the province. That moratorium lapsed in 1987 but subsequent governments did not move to update it, as companies focused their exploration campaigns on other metals and because there was a widespread view that uranium production would be unpopular in the province. That changed in recent years, as uranium prices more than doubled and climate
A federal judge has blocked a British mining company from exploring for uranium near the Grand Canyon, agreeing with environmental groups which sued the U.S. Forest Service for approving the plan without full environmental reviews. The Sierra Club, Grand Canyon Trust and Center for Biological Diversity sued the Forest Service last month for allowing VANE Minerals Group to drill at up to 39 locations on seven sites on the Kaibab National Forest. The company is seeking commercial quantities of uranium, which has soared in price in recent years and resulted in a wave of new development. U.S. District Judge Mary Murguia in Phoenix issued a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction stopping the drilling late Friday after a hearing, said Sandy Bahr, conservation outreach di

Russia urges Slovakia to join its uranium enrichment centre Russia has urged Slovakia to join its uranium enrichment centre in Angarsk in East Siberia as part of Moscow's non-proliferation initiative. This was announced here Thursday by visiting Russian Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov after talks with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico. The centre is part of Moscow's non-proliferation initiative to create a network of enrichment centres under the supervision of UN nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The centre is based at a chemical plant in Angarsk in Siberia and will also be responsible for disposal of nuclear waste. "We propose our Slovakian partners join the international uranium enrichment centre that is being built by Russia," Zubkov said. Russian Pres

From the Tucson Citizen : Indian leaders, scientists, business interests and the superintendent of the Grand Canyon warned Friday of dire consequences if uranium mining is allowed to proceed near the national park. Mining advocates minimized any likely problems. At a congressional field hearing held in Flagstaff, proponents of a measure to ban mining around the Grand Canyon said the canyon is a national treasure worthy of protection from the impacts of such activity. Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., who chaired the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, has sponsored a bill to ban a million acres near the Grand Canyon from mineral exploration under the 1872 Mining Act. In advance of the hearing, Grijalva said it would focus on "the need to buffer this
Let's assume that the 33 kilos of nuclear material discovered last week by Colombian officials allegedly cached by FARC was almost worthless, and represented no real security threat, as suggested by Aaron Mannes in his article "DU Dud." Does that mean we should conclude, as he does, that it represented desperation, ignorance, failure of judgment, or incompetence by the FARC, making FARC either (a) the victim of the scam, no longer feared by the person scamming FARC, or (b) the scammer who would hurt...(read more)
Colombian police have found 30 kilos (65 lbs.) of depleted uranium (DU). DU is what is left over after natural uranium is enriched. It is less radioactive than natural uranium and consequently useless for building dirty bombs (let alone nuclear weapons.) Tons of the stuff is around and there is virtually no market for DU (certainly not to the tune of $2.5 million a kilo). While the Hollywood scenarios of terrorists dealing in WMD appear to be false, this incident raises interesting questions about...(read more)

~Snooper~Great. Wonderful. Peachy-keen. From the Counterterrorism Blog:[...] FARC's operational, financial, logistical, and political networks now face exposure, and those who have directly facilitated terrorist or criminal activity -- regardless of their political position -- need to face practical consequences. Such consequences can include such responses as the imposition of economic sanctions and asset freezes, the bringing of criminal indictments, the loss of the right to travel in countries registering objections to those doing business with or supporting terrorists. But there have to be consequences, and they need to be multilateral, not confined to issuance by Bogota and Washington. The U.S. Court of International Trade struck down a 112-percent antidumping duty on Russian uranium in a ruling on a suit brought by Tekhnabexport on October 28. Although the Russian atomic fuel producer will not have access to the American market for two more months under the court's decision, it makes it possible then to deliver Australian uranium enriched in Russia to the U.S., where the market has been closed since 1991. Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) head Sergey Kirienko announced on Friday that Tekhnabexport won its suit against the U.S. Department of Commerce in U.S. court, where it challenged the legality of antidumping duties on the import of Russian-produced low-enriched uranium (LEU) into the U.S. Kommersant has learned that the decision was made by the court on September 26. Two days were required for the official formulation of the ruling. The court ordered the Department of Commerce to define the scope of the antidumping procedure and exempt Russian LEU uranium

Shares of Canadian uranium producers have fallen to their lowest levels since last year, as a global equity selloff has added to the woes of a sector suffering from a sudden price reversal and a string of bad news hitting its biggest player.Cameco Corp., the world's largest producer, hit a nine-month low of $39.25 on the Toronto Stock Exchange Friday, a full 34% off its peak of $59.90 reached in June, though it rebounded later in the session.Uranium One, which hopes to challenge Cameco's dominance over the next six years, touched a 10-month low of $9.85, while Denison Mines fell to a nine-month low of $9.12, down 45% from a record high in May.While the most recent leg of the slide has been partly due to the broader market's sell-off over worries about credit markets, the retreat by uranium players has outdistanced peers both in the broader market and among Canadian resource stocks.Cameco has also been hit by a series negative events - most notably the flooding of its Cigar Lake mine

With the prices of uranium soaring French energy giant Areva knows they need to find more sources for uranium and they thought it was their lucky day when they found 14,000 tonnes of uranium near the Kakadu National Park.
The land is owned by the sole member of the Djok clan and the senior custodian of the Koongarra uranium deposit (JEFFREY LEE), his father and grandfather were offered houses, cars and many other things for the land (they were not told about the uranium), although the 14,000 tonnes are worth more than $5 billion Mr. Lee is not interested.
Jeffrey Lee controls the fate of Koongarra and said “This is my country. Look, its beautiful and I fear somebody will disturb it,” as he waved is arm across a view of rocky land that is surrounded by Kakadu National Park.
The 36-year-old Jeffrey Lee has decided never to allow the land to be mined and as money does not mean a thing to him that looks the way it’s going to be.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd., which produces more than a 10th of the world's mined uranium, said it expects to receive a lower average price for the metal this half than for the whole of 2006 even as spot prices rise. The Darwin-based company got an average of $15.57 a pound for uranium in the first half of 2006, lower than the $17 it received on average for all of 2005, it said in a presentation lodged late yesterday with the Australian Stock Exchange. Similarly, the average price this half will be lower than the $18.36 received for the whole of 2006, it said. Energy Resources earlier this month forecast a first-half loss after flooding at its Ranger mine in northern Australia disrupted output, forcing the company to declare ``force majeure'' on deliveries. Spot prices for the nuclear fuel have jumped 12-fold since early 2003 and are at $135 a pound, according to The Ux Consulting Co.'s Web site. ``Year-on-year realized p

Uranium prices continue to rise, increasing the cost of generating nuclear power and spurring investment in mining. The 143 percent jump on the uranium spot market since October, however, is being met with optimism -- hopes that uranium`s growing pains will lead to a more sustainable nuclear fuel sector. Analysts say the new price marker is nearing what may be a plateau for a uranium market that was so depressed by government inventories -- to around $15 from the 1980s until earlier this decade -- that there was little investment in mining and production of the material. The two leading uranium information and consulting firms released late Monday their new prices for spot market purchases: UX Consulting pegged it at $135 per pound and Trade Tech at $138 per pound. 'Right now, there is a gap between primary production and reactor requirements on an annual basis,' said James Malone, vice president of nuclear fuels for Exelon Corp. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Sunday night’s revelations that China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) may strengthen its ties to UraMin could represent a broader picture than an ordinary acquisition of a near-term uranium producer.
There is an ongoing global war for energy security, which appears to be politically inspired. China and Russia are the main opponents, especially in Africa, but have rivaled each other, over the past several years, in Central Asia. The goal for both nations is not only energy security but political influence and alliance over their targeted territories.
On May 12th, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan signed a declaration to upgrade and expand transport pipelines along the Caspian Sea coast directly to Russia. The project relies mainly upon the vast Turkmen gas reserves. This is part of Russia’s growing monopoly of Central Asian gas. Although Europe was shocked by Vladimir Putin’s new arrangement, the Chinese were flabbergasted.

We thought by now we’d heard it all. But the quote which follows, given to us in a tape-recorded telephone interview by the man who obtains nuclear fuel for the largest nuclear utility in the United States, surprised even us.
“From the point of view of today’s price, they did us a favor by sending a really strong signal to the production-side community that it was time to get out there and start looking to get stuff back into production,” Exelon Corp nuclear fuels vice president James Malone told StockInterview. Malone was referring to the uranium speculators and financial community, who have driven long-term uranium contracts to US$85/pound and the weekly spot price to $125/pound. “It may not have happened as quickly without this strong signal.”
And then we talked about the widening spread between the weekly spot and long-term uranium price.
“I think the sellers have the perception that prices should be higher in the spot market, but obviously the buyers aren’t sharing
Mired in secrecy, the uranium market hopes to someday offer price transparency. To whom will this ‘real’ uranium price become transparent? Industry insiders know well before the general investing public ever finds out.
Utility fuel managers compete with a few handfuls of fuel brokers for the best price break. Utilities complain about the unwelcome speculators who’ve entered the market. and utility spokesman predict a long-term price about one-half of the US$122/pound price indicator announced in Nuclear Market Review this past Friday (another consulting service chose $125/pound for their ‘price indicator’). Some uranium miners forecast a price racing past $200/pound. Who is gaming whom? Or is this all part of the negotiations process between producers and end-users?
Meanwhile, more immediate price transparency seems to appear at Mestena’s regular spot uranium price auctions than in the much larger, but secretive uranium marketplace. Yet, the amount this private uranium prod

GORHAM, Maine, May 8 (UPI) -- A U.S. study suggests exposure to particles of depleted uranium might increase the risk of genetic damage and lung cancer.Depleted uranium is the material remaining after removal or depletion of the U-238 isotope. With a density about twice that of lead, depleted uranium is ideal for use in military armor and munitions. But now John Pierce Wise Sr. and colleagues at the University of Southern Maine have discovered depleted uranium dust produced in combat creates potentially frequent and widespread exposure for soldiers and non-combatants inhaling such dust particles. In their study, the researchers tested the effects of depleted uranium dust on cultures of human lung cells."These data suggest that exposure to particulate DU may pose a significant genotoxic risk and could possibly result in lung cancer," the scientists said. The study is to be reported in the May 21 issue of the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.
It has come to our attention that readers of MarketMatador.com may have been confused by the article on “Nuclear Energy will be Obsolete in 20 Years.” The question and misunderstanding stems from a simple economic figure of supply and demand. NREL (NATIONAL RENEWABLE ENERGY LAB), the government agency, has scientists working on the very issue of the estimated Uranium 235 left on Earth. They’ve come to the conclusion that the world has 40 years of U235 left. Think about supply and demand, as the supply goes down, what happens to demand? You guessed it, it becomes more expensive! Therefore, 20 years into the production cycle, as international countries continue to build plants and America debates installing a new one, the demand increases even more. Ultimately, the world simply doesn’t have enough Uranium necessary to feed all the Nuclear Reactors, so prices skyrocket.
Ultimately, this ends up being a bullish case for investors, at least for the short-term. Invest
