World powers must act quickly and boldly to control soaring food prices that threaten nearly 1 billion people with hunger and could trigger global social unrest, the United Nations said yesterday.
At a three-day emergency food summit UN officials urged nations to eliminate trade barriers, expand research into biotechnology, and boost production with an annual investment [...]

It may or may not be 1990s month up in the Detour crew's life. What is it? Is it the airlines just plum forgettin' to fix their planes? Is it our cars being stolen, or our T-bills being drunk? Whatever it is, this stack of records from back then are serving to make us believe that the world isn't ending just yet.

Al Jazeera (April 15 2008) - Ethnic Somali separatists have been fighting government forces in the east of Ethiopia for more than 13 years now, but the long-running conflict has been largely invisible as Addis Ababa has restricted access to the region. There have been numerous clashes between the Ogaden National Liberation Army (ONLF) and the military in recent months, with both sides claiming successes. But with few journalists in the vast and sparsely populated region that borders Somalia, it is difficult to get an accurate picture of how frequently the fighting occurs and its toll on human life. However, Al Jazeera gained exclusive access to the region and found that youths, angry at the treatment of the local ethnic Somali population the government, were flocking to join the separatists."
So what evidence do we have of US involvement in this latest round of Tibetan violence? History suggests it might be the case. The CIA gave the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama money and support through the 1950s and 1960s. On September 15, 1998, a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that during "the 1960s, the CIA provided the Tibetan exile movement with $1.7 million ($1.83 million) a year for operations against China, including an annual subsidy of $180,000 ($193,500) for the Dalai Lama". The CIA trained Tibetan guerrillas in Nepal and in Colorado during that period. This CIA support petered out in the 1970s. So what is the situation today? Michael Barker, a PhD student at Griffith University in Brisbane who studies social and political movements, says much of the present inter
Foreign policy sans military might Is like a mouth without teeth;Often it has to swallow, Not once can it bite.------------------------------------------------------------------------Tibet is on fire. Nearly 60 years back, the Chinese Army occupied that country, with India’s willing concurrence born out of total blindness to its disastrous strategic ramifications. That fatal blunder converted Tibet from India’s buffer against China to the latter’s buffer against India and placed Chinese troops literally on India’s head. Tibet is officially an autonomous region of China. But, the autonomy is only in the name. Ever since the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India in 1959, China has systematically eroded all traces of autonomy and brought in large number of Chinese settlers who, accor

Tibetan protest over Chinese rule has turned violent.
Though human rights groups ardently defend the protection of the Tibetan people and the preservation of their culture (as they should, the Chinese have been brutal in their reign), ironically it is no fun to be Chinese among these violent rioters in Lhasa today. 10 people are dead, [...]
If you're wondering why I haven't posted anything new lately, it's because my computers at home were all down until only a few days ago. Went through a couple of hardware upgrades which, unfortunately, didn't really go as smooth as I was expecting them to turn out.The first upgrade involved the video card of the PC my son uses to play games with (Athlon XP 2400+, 1.5 GB RAM, 256 MB Radeon 9550). He started complaining over the slow frame rates he was getting with some newer games, particularly the resource-hungry RTS World in Conflict. The game is actually playable when using low graphics settings, but there's nothing quite as pathetic as playing a computer game with all the settings turned down to low. After some research, I figured the GPU with the best bang-for-the-buck was the NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS, with its 12 pixel pipelines, 5 vertex shaders, and a core running at 400 MHz. All I need now is to find one, particularly one which runs on an AGP bus.I soon realized that AGP vide
Pakistan's nukes in the hands of terrorists has India--and other countries--uneasy.Pakistanis aren't the only ones worried about the turmoil created by the state of emergency in the country. Amid rumors that the state of emergency may have been a move against President Musharaf, others are keeping a nervous eye on Pakistan's nuclear arsenal.India is closely watching events unfold--as well as al-Qaeda and other terrorist organizations. What could turn into an opportunity for terrorists could prove to be a nightmare for India or the United States. In short, any country worried about nuclear weapons in the hands of a small group with scores to settle.More on this from the India Express:Nuclear-armed Pakistan is teetering on the verge of chaos after the imposition of emergency and US officials fear that the result could be every American's nightmare -- nuclear material or know-how, or even a nuclear bomb, falling into the hands of terrorists."If you were to look around the world for whe
PENRITHS Panthers officials today moved to stall player and fan unrest that the struggling National Rugby League club is on a downward spiral. Penrith general manager Michael Leary called a meeting with his players this morning to confirm second rower Frank Pritchard, fullback Rhys Wesser and lock Trent Waterhouse would not be joining the club’s already considerable exodus. "They’re going nowhere," Leary said. "I had a talk to them because all these rumours and innuendos were more…
FORMER Australia captain Mark Taylor says he believes in the International Cricket Council, even if its players don't.
Taylor, 42, has vowed to "make a difference" after joining a restructured 13-member ICC committee to be chaired by outspoken Indian great Sunil Gavaskar.
A survey conducted by the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations found 56 per cent of member-nation players had no confidence in ICC's governance of the game. Its organisation of the World Cup in the Caribbean was also scolded.
Regardless, Taylor said cricket's governing body faced "very touchy" challenges.
"Everyone in cricket wants to see the game flourish worldwide and it has to happen through someone," said Taylor of the ICC, criticised for lacking direction over the past two years.
"I think the cricket World Cup and things since will be discussed at the next committee meeting."
FICA chief executive Tim May this week lashed ICC committees for operatin
So I have been noticing that some of the contests in the shopautodotca seocontest have started wondering if this contest is a scam. Big ugly toenail man is getting really steamed too. He is getting downright belligerent in fact.So the new site in the contest was I belive experiencing a mysql problem, it was resolved however but now his site has been indexed as ERROR. That sucks.Did you know: Tripod does not even support mysql. Isn't that funny too! No mysql, php, asp. Just html, perl with a cgi-bin. That's okay. I don't know nearly enough about all this to really be able to use it all anyways. I am learning but I don't want to learn all the programming languages at once you know. Might overload. But eventually I will learn them all right. But I will know not to use Tripod, though I thank Tripod for being there for me throughout the shopautodotca seocontest

The Year of the Pig starts Sunday, and Chinese fortunetellers say it will be a good time to have a baby, but also warn there will be an upsurge in epidemics, disasters and violent conflicts across the world.“The Year of the Pig will not be very peaceful,” said Raymond Lo, a feng shui master in Hong Kong.Pig years can be turbulent because they are dominated by fire and water — two of the five elements that Chinese mystics say are the basis of the universe, Lo said. Since fire and water are conflicting elements, they tend to whip up trouble, he said.“Fire sitting on water is a symbol of conflict and skirmish. We’ll also see more fire disasters and bombings,” he said. Malaysian feng shui master Lillian Too agreed there was trouble ahead. “I wish I could say that there won’t be natural disasters, but I am afraid it could be as bad as last year,” she said. “There could be epidemics. I am very worried about bird flu. Eat healthy foo

From the outside looking in, without having heard the music, it seems like Erlend Øye's intent with Unrest was to make an album that defined the antithesis of cohesion. First, there's the title. Second, there's the way this album came together: ten songs from ten cities -- from Berlin to Brooklyn to Barcelona -- with as many producers. And yet, Unrest is as
