I can think of six, maybe seven, people in the entire world needing, rather - wanting this type of functionality from their sports car.A couple of questions have to be asked though. Business Times - 08 May 2008 US home slump puts owners 'underwater' Values fall 7.7% in Q1 to lowest point in nearly 3 years (NEW YORK) US home values dropped 7.7 per cent in the first quarter to the lowest in almost three years, according to estimates by Zillow.com, an online data provider. The decline is the biggest in 12 years of data compiled by Seattle-based Zillow.com, a website started in 2006 to provide homeowners, real estate agents and potential buyers with value assessments called 'zestimates' for single-family homes, cooperative apartments and condominiums. US house prices dropped for the first time since the 1930s last year, discouraging buyers who fear being 'underwater' on their mortgage, or owing more on their home than it's worth. That's already happened to almost 52 per c

When the Nikon D300 was released last summer (’07) I along with many other underwater photographers recognised that its introduction coupled with the relatively low retail price would substantially influence uwp world over. In my role as uwp educator I decided to ‘jump on the bandwagon’ and upgrade from my trusty, reliable and much loved D200.You need to know that I have favoured Nikon since my days with a Nikon F2 and Oceanic housings of the 80’s. I have owned and used Subal housings since the introduction of the Nikon F801 in the early 1990’s. In my teaching role I regularly instruct in Ikelite, Sea & Sea, Nexus and Hugyfot DSLR housings. Whilst I’ll endeavour to be impartial as I can, the influence that Nikon and Subal have had on my own photographic career cannot be ignored

Start with blank document. Fill background layer with gradient going from light blue to dark blue. In Layer effects, use very large (250px) black Inner Glow, with blend mode = overlay. In new layer, select very large brush, set color to white and put a single dot. Transform layer (Ctrl-T) to make dot width less and height more. Move white dot to top of image (so that only bottom half of it is visible) and set its layer blend mode to Overlay. Duplicate this layer and make it about 50% smaller. Man I wish I was leading that dive. I was up on the boat and just as my divers went down a few whales went by. They (the whales, the divers had no idea what was coming) turned themselves around and passed outside of the divers as the divers hit the edge of the reef at "Hoover's" then turned around again and headed directly to the divers. A female and her calf went directly overhead while an escort whale passed about 50 feet outside of Cathy and the group. All were thrilled. 2000 or so dives here and I've yet to see a whale underwater, bummer.Anyway, it was a good day of diving. The whales were definitely the highlights, but Cathy also found a yellow frogfish she's been watching grow over the last month or two... and at the end of our second dive (at an undisclosed location) she came up

Underwater Video: Auto Focus vs. Manual FocusBy Sy Harris"I’m at 100 feet with the reef at my back, shooting into the blue. All the action is in the deeper parts of the ocean where Grey Reef Reef sharks and barracuda jockey for position in the current. It’s a wide-angle fiesta and I had everything dialed: exposure, lighting, filtration…focus? Unfortunately I was in auto focus, and as the silver/grey fish procession swam by in the deep blue water I may have been stoked, but my camera’s auto focus was lost. While I thought I was shooting clear, well-focused footage, my camera was making a series of focus adjustments, which I was unable to see through my viewfinder and monitor. The adjustments were definitely noticeable when I viewed the footage at home. The camera was “seeking” or

There's an annual underwater photography event that's been held here in Kona for several years now that's supposed to be fun... so I thought I'd plug it.This year it'll be held from May 24th through the 31st. Official sponsors for the event are Jack's Diving Locker, Kona Honu Divers, and Bottom Time. The event includes a week of diving along with seminars, photo critiques, social events and a competition with great prizes. It's a great opportunity to learn and develop some underwater photography skills. There will be several well known photo pros involved, who will be rotating on the boats of the official sponsors during the diving portion of the event as well as being present at the evening and social activities.I'll be joining in on the fun myself as I've always wanted to do it but u

Somewhere near the bottom left corner of the map, there is a place with a pool of water and some trees. One of the trees is leaning over, you can climb up it and jump in the water, but that's not what this post is about. Drive a vehicle of some kind into the water, and then get out and look, you can't see the vehicle from the surface, only when you go underwater. This works with anything, even a hydra.

Akshay is at present shooting for Nagesh Kukunoor’s psychological thriller ‘Eight By Ten’ where he plays a man with extraordinary psychic powers.Last week at a pool in Chembur Akshay shot the climax sequence of the film where tied up in chains, he went underwater. Akshay was all tied up with chains when he went underwater without any breathing apparatus. A part of the training involves taking deep breaths for a minute before taking the plunge into water. Akshay says it is a very difficult stunt that
Cave diving photography is one of the most challenging and potentially dangerous kinds of all human activities. A lot of things can go wrong when you go into a deep cave. Many more can go wrong when the cave is also filled with water. This said, imagine doing the last two while at the same time being occupied with the right angle and perfect lighting of a beautiful underwater cave shot. Not the

This has got to be one of the craziest cars that Rinspeed has ever created, because not only can the sQuba concept car compete on dry land, it can actually drive on water, as well as underwater. Yes, you read that correctly and this apparently is no joke. The drop-top roadster is made of lightweight materials and can effectively use its wheels as some sort of rudder system, propelling itself across the surface of the water not unlike, well, a boat. To take things even further, the car can dive up to 10 meters underwater for a true scuba experience. Naturally, the driver and passenger will need their own air supply devices.Better still, the Rinspeed sQuba concept is a zero-emissions vehicle thanks to its full dependence on electric motors. This also eliminates the petrol motor's reliance on
Its no more a friction from the James bond movies, its now a reality. Rinspeed, a Swiss motor company is planning to showcase its version on the submersible car at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6-16, 2008). Its called the “sQuba".The £750,000 prototype, which can dive to a depth of 10 metres. It is the brainchild of concept car designer Frank Rinderknecht. Rinderknecht is apparently an acknowledged James Bond enthusiast and has been very facinated and inspired by concept of the underwater car that he saw in one of the bond movie. The "sQuba" car is capable of speeds of up to 120 km/h on land, a more sedate 6.4 km/h cruising in "boat" mode and just 3.2 km/h beneath the surface. There are three electric motors are located in the rear, with one providing propulsion on land, driving the rear
I recently read that off the coast of Florida tons of water rushes by in a strong, smooth current, never pausing, never stopping. This energy can be harnessed with turbines, and would equate to 10 nuclear power stations, capable of supplying power to (I believe) 1/3 of Florida. What if we did that all over every continental coastline? What if we installed turbines throughout the majority of the ocean? We'd have tons of free, clean energy! It seems like every couple of months, a new energy option is revealed. I'm starting to think we are fully capable with current technology of detaching from oil permanently. Let's hope we do it in time.

Swiss company Rinspeed Inc. has invented 'sQuba', a car which can run on both land and water. The car is to be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show next month. The car move even at a distance of 30 feet below sea level. A wet suit however is required as the car has been designed as an open car so that it's occupants can escape in any emergency. It can travel at a speed of 77 mph on land, 3 mph on the surface of water and at 1.8 mph underwater. Also to prevent waterlogging, the combustion engine has been replaced with several electric motors. It is said that the company CEO Frank Rinderknecht got the idea from watching James Bond's "The Spy Who Loved Me" which involves a scene with such a car in action.

Hi Penguins! Sorry Im a bit late posting this, Ive been really caught up with school and family commitments. But anyway, the Club Penguin Underwater party is here and its fantastic! All of Club Penguin is decorated like the a reef with fish, plants and coral. Its almost like the Great Penguin Reef! The first free item is the Yellow Snorkel! You can find it at the Forest, inside the large treasure chest. Its a variation of the green one, but im not sure if it has been around before. The second free item is the Seashell belt! Its at the Book Room, upstairs from the Coffee Shop. I think its great that Club Penguin brought back a belt, the last version of one was about a year ago! At the Iceberg, the rescue vehicle is almost finished, and looks almost exactly the same as Pochoma123's edit in o

While you are scuba diving, you are no doubt amazed by the beauty and grace of the underwater world and wish to share it with your family and friends who you have not been able to convince to go with you as of yet. Or maybe you just want to capture photos of your experiences so that you can keep them for your own enjoyment. No matter the reason, most people have a great desire to begin learning underwater photography fairly early on in their scuba diving career. If this sounds like you, you have likely already begun browsing your local scuba dive shops for equipment and started reading up on articles and information published by underwater photography professionals. While you can find a lot of information in this way, a lot of it is technical and hard to follow. For this reason, the best wa
Aloha, I get a fair number of inquiries about which camera to get for starting out with underwater photography, so I'll chime in with a few of my thoughts here. Many people think you have to get a dedicated underwater camera, while this may be the best for some people, it isn't the only way to go. Oftentimes you can pick up a great new camera, with all the bells and whistles, and it'll have a corresponding manufacturer designed underwater housing that is good to about 130-140 feet or so. In many cases you can even find a housing available for a digital camera you may already own. There are housings avaiable for many Sony, Nikon, Olympus, Casio, Canon and Fuji cameras already on the market, and they seem to be committed to supporting housings in the future. there's probablay a couple o
It was linked on a message board I check. Click here to go to the video page. It's basically about invertebrates, some spectacular deep sea stuff and shallow water cephalopods (squid, cuttlefish and octopus). It's very interesting, and if you watch all 5 minutes of it you'll see why we don't see octopus on every dive even though they're probably out in the open. This is a nice nudibranch I think I posted another picture of way back in '06. We see them on occasion here and typically call them Strawberry Nudibranchs, but I do think there are a couple closely related species that get called that. This one in particular confuses me because it has characterics of both a Pustulose Phyllidia and a Rosy Phyllidia. Aloha, Steve
Yesterday Pat and I were going to go out on a little holo holo adventure on the boat.... ended up spending a large part of the day at the ER. I'm mostly in bed for the next few days with a torn hamstring. Ice, ibuprophen, hydrocodone and lots of sleep are what I have to look forward to for the next day or so. I get a new set of crutches out of the deal though. I'm hoping I'm only on them for a few days and can get back to walking speed shortly.I hobbled to the computer to check my mail, and as long as I'm up I thought I'd try posting a short slideshow. I downloaded some free software off the internet to do it, my big gripe so far is I can't figure out how to check the progress of it while editing, it seems as though it's gotta be posted just to look at it, I'm probably missing something. I've been wanting to get a "good" shot of one of these guys for a long time. This isn't it quite yet. So many of the fish dart about so much that it's tough to get them focused. The closer you are the tougher it is, too far out then the flash doesn't get enough light to the subject.... this photo has just a bit too much movement for my tastes. One of these days!!!This is a juvenile Yellowtail Coris Wrasse (Coris Gaimard). On occasion, people not familiar with the Hawaiin fish will mistake it for a clown fish (Hawaii doesn't have clown fish, I believe we've just a tad to cool of a water temperature for them to reproduce successfully). Typically we'll see the Yellowtail Coris in this coloration up to about 3 inches or so. As they grow, they will lose the white stripes, start adding bl
So I'm sitting at my computer and wanted to look at a document and see that I had a couple of RAW pictures in the file that I hadn't looked at. I thought I'd updated Photoshop lately and maybe they now support the RAW format my camera uses, I opened Photoshop and the pictures do now show. For those of you who don't know what RAW is, basically consider it as a "digital negative" which holds all the information the camera sees at the time, no JPEG compression and such. Not all cameras offer RAW, but it's becoming more common in the higher end point and shoot cameras these days. It takes up a lot of memory compared to JPEG, but if you have an editor to open it (without the editor, you will see nothing as computers don't automatically recognize RAW) with, it'll do a lot of things easily that

I got an underwater camera from Lorri for my birthday. So come the summer hopefully I can post some nice underwater photos from around the Irish coast. It’s very cheap for an underwater camera. Not the most high tech (it doesn’t have an focus option) but its a great entry level camera. The next cheapest one I could find is around €499. I’ll let you know what the quality is like when I get a chance to use it. You can take it out of the case as well and it’s nice and small so it might be useful in the pub as well.
If you are interested in looking at underwater pictures from Ireland check out the Cork Sub-Aqua Club.

Bob had some customers/friends that have dove with him over the years and has been handling the dives the last couple of days. Yesterday I took a quick 35 minute dive between dives while they were having their surface interval. Here's most of the dive compressed into about 8 minutes. Highlights were, cleaner wrasses working a variety of fish, parrotfish feeding on corals, a spotted eagle ray, the biggest unicorn tang I've seen in a long time, garden eels, anthias, various trigger fish, a juvenile razor wrasse, a rather large toby, a helmet snail chasing down a meal, a whitemouth moray hunting with groupers, a large school of heller's barracuda and more....The camera takes pretty good video. This was just taken with the standard underwater setting at all depths. I didn't try to customize the white balance as I basically was just cruising around shootinng and not trying to do anything special. It will include three elements: the land station, where guests will be welcomed, the connecting tunnel, which will transport people by train to the main area of the hotel, and the 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. It is one of the largest contemporary construction projects in the world, covering an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London 's Hyde Park .This will be a hotel where those who do not dive - or do not even swim - can experience the tranquillity and inspiration of the underwater world. In order to enter this surreal space, visitors will begin at the land station. This 120m woven, semicircular cylinder will arch over a multi-storey building. The upper storeys of the land station house a variety of facilities, including a cosmetic surgical clinic, a marine biological research laboratory and conference facilities. The world of science fiction becoming reality. The
Both today's events got canceled by rain.First was play day up across from HC school then it would have been followed by a boat ride 14 miles north.I ended up doing plan c which was a nice walk in the rain to Island Perk followed by meeting up with Jennifer on the way home and heading back to Perk so she could meet the gang. Winner for best rain gear goes to Alex with his orange Carhartt rain suit. Afterwards we headed to L'esquinta (sp?) - middle street from Pan Dulce - for fried jacks then back here so she could meet Paul and wait out the rain.I just got into my cozy wear and am thrilled to relax. Watching what not to wear and chatting Zac on the coconut phone.Ch 19 just went in and out for a bit - rain came down in buckets for 5 minutes, just enough to make more ponds and lakes , clean the dust off the plants and keep the roads nice and muddyHaving a few moments to myself as Paul was at Island Perk, I decided to have a lay down with my mp3 player so I could listen to some music

I went for a long shallow dive (106 minutes, still had roughly 1200 psi left) the other day and took some shots with the new camera. I realized only today that I had a bunch of focusing problems because the camera was using it's default focus method which takes most of what's in the picture into account, and I really wanted to do a spot focus so I could pick exactly what I wanted in focus. This Yellow Margin Moray Eel did turn out quite nice using the default focus though. We had a fun charter today. One of my passengers showed up obviously stuffed up so I suggested he take the day off. He's also scheduled for tomorrow, if he's cleared up by then he'll be joining us ... otherwise Pat, myself and a friend will go fishing and diving and call it a holo holo day. later, Steve
Just playing around with the new camera. The video looks pretty darned good straight out of the camera. Youtube compresses it a great deal so it's not quite as nice. I did a dive this afternoon just for fun with the camera. I've got to learn the Canon menu, but a few things turned out fairly Ok and look as though when I go into photoshop I'll be able to get them looking the way I want.
Well, I done did it. I've been debating about sending my camera back to Olympus to see if they could repair the flash, buying another camera, or just living with manual white balance 'til I could afford a new camera in the spring.... then Pat said the magic words... "Bill me later". I was unaware of this, but many of the big photo/electronics companies contract out with bill-me-later.com to offer 6 months free interest for their goods. That's about perfect timing for me, so it was done after two days of research. Here's the camera I chose... I also picked up the housing for it. The Amazon link actually has pretty good pricing for both the camera and housing (which is available as an accessory), I paid a few extra bucks at the time getting it from a company that had the delayed billing options. One little story on shipping... very fast and efficient through UPS, however we tracked it and for some reason it actually spent a day in Taiwan after it first reached Honolulu. A couple o

I've been thinking about cameras lately since mine have been on the fritz. Many of the popular cameras actually have underwater housings available and Pat and I have housed several digital cameras over the last few years. The onboard flash on most of them has it's limits and many people look for extra light by adding an external flash. Last year I picked up an Olympus flash and it's appropriate housing for my Olympus SP 350 set up, but it was so bulky I never really used it. The other day I was checking things out and found this new offering by Olympus...Olympus UFL 1 - Underwater flash - 14 (m) It's a stand alone underwater flash that is compatible with many of the Olympus underwater camera housings that have a hot shoe, offering TTL exposure without the hassle of wires and strobe trays. I wish they had it back when I was looking. This Amazon price is actually a very good deal, as a housed Olympus flash will cost much more, and trying to get TTL exposure with another bran
by Remus Mark CarballoBrief Description Another gem of the Visayas, Bohols historical significance extends way back to the blood compact between Boholano Chieftain Sikatuna and the Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, in 1565. Scenic Bohol casts an enigmatic charm drawn from the many archaic mementos spread throughout the oval-shaped island: from the Chocolate Hills and the tarsier to 16th century watchtowers and Jesuit Baroque mission churches. The Chocolate Hills, all of 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, are undoubtedly the most famous tourist attraction in the province. Among these hills that abound in Central Bohol, two have been developed into top-class resorts. One of the rare faunas found in the Philippine archipelago, the Tarsier is the smallest primate in the world. It is a nocturnal primate measuring from four to five inches, with a tail that is longer than its body. Those interested in tarsier watching are always welcomed by the Boholanos to see the famou
Memories are created just about anywhere. And when I say anywhere, I mean that memories are even created underwater – so the creation of underwater digital camera. An underwater digital camera is not just used to capture underwater memories; some professional marine photographers also use underwater digital cameras in their business. Even marine biologists and scientists use underwater digital cameras to capture marine life and thus be able to study the life and properties of the marine life. But I think it is safe to assume that you, my reader, are neither a marine scientist nor a professional photographer. Like me, you are just some photo junkie who wants to capture underwater moments and just cant figure out how without ruining your cameras. Please listen to me when I say that even waterproof cameras cannot withstand underwater photography. To be waterproof is to resist the water in certain levels, submerging in under the water to get the perfect shot is like throwing it out of the

Rock Lake in southern Wisconsin, dubbed "North America's Most Controversial Underwater Archaeological Discovery of the 20th Century." The first settlers of Lake Mills, Wisconsin in the 1830s heard stories from the Winnebago Indians about "stone teepees" submerged in nearby Rock Lake. Over time, especially during periods of extreme drought, fishermen reported seeing large geometric structures on the lake floor. The few times archaeologists came to investigate, they couldn't locate the structures and dubbed the underwater features a hoax. At one point the mayor of Lake Mills spotted one of the pyramids himself and the technological search was on.Aerial photos, side boat sonar scans, and underwater divers eventually charted a complex of at least nine different stone structures, including: two rectangular pyramids, several stacked–rock walls, two "Stone Cone" areas, a conical pyramid, and a large "Delta Triangle" structure. There is also a part of the lake floor that supposedly feature
