But I got a surprise text yesterday morning from the Pawikan Center saying that sea turtles had just hatched the night before and were ready for adoption. Pet Turtle Care
Turtles are fascinating pets to own, but many people get them not knowing how to care for them. They need to have the right amount of space, light, shade, and moisture to survive. You need to learn what turtles require before you get one.The best place to keep a turtle is outside. Turtles hibernate in the winter and if they are kept inside they won't hibernate. This can cause them to develop liver diseases. A turtle's natural cycle should not be messed with. Also, if you keep a turtle pen outside you can create a completely natural turtle habitat. Some people that keep turtles inside use refrigerators to make them hibernate. This is not recommended though because if the refrigerator suddenly rises in temperature or if the power goes off, the turtle's hibernation will be interrupted. This ca

Be the Turtle - Why Timing the Market is Impossible
Sometimes looking at the raw data itself presents very interesting conclusions. This is one of these cases. One of the basic mistakes many investors do is trying to time the market or buy low and sell high to make quick profits. If you've ever tried that you must have noticed it's hardly as intuitive as it sounds. It appears the statistics themselves are against us in this matter. In order to see if it was possible to time the market and make relatively quick profits I've examined the daily price change for both the Nasdaq and S&P 500 indices since 1990. I've found very interesting results. I exmained the absolute daily price changes and not just the positive ones under the assumption you can also time the market downwards (sell short). There were approximately 4,559 trading days between

      NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed blog The 5th Turtle revealed an image this last week of NECA’s take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As you can see, Leonardo differs greatly from the Playmates Turtles that no doubt many of the readers of Toy Bender grew up with. That’s because he’s based on the original comic book appearance of the Turtles by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird that made them millionaires. Reaction to this photo on the internets message boards seems to be extremely positive, so I’m going to go on an official unpopular stance by saying that while this is cool and all, Leonardo is a little more dumpy than I thought he’d be. I thought he’d be a little more streamlined like in this photo: I can certainly understand why Playmates had changed the look of the Turtles way back in the day to make them more kid friendly. Don’t get me wrong, I like this Leonardo and NECA’s take is dead spot on to the original Teenage Mutan

      Turtle Jam Tour
I was very pleased to hear that my handheld miniature, “Turtle Jam”, will be a part of the Society of Animal Artists national museum tour.  The painting was in the SAA’s 47th exhibition that opened at the Wildlife Experience Museum in Parker, Colorado.  The touring exhibit will be making stops around the country during [...]

Moses the Turtle Teaches Me About Arrogance
Years ago, I owned a turtle named "Moses". We had a special relationship that scared my family because I would hold Moses right in front of my face and kiss him. They were always afraid Moses would, as most reptiles do, jerk his tongue out and sting me. But he never did! He crawled on my chest and nestled in my neck, feeling safe with me. I loved Moses more than I can describe.I took him outside with me every day, allowing him to get sunshine and eat bugs as I trimmed my trees and hedges. The back yard was totally fenced in, so I never dreamed he would get out. But the inevitable happened one day. Moses was no where to be found, and I cried for weeks.About eight months later, I was digging weeds out of the flower bed in the front yard, and my shovel hit something hard. Thinking it a rock, I reached down to get it with my hands and was shocked beyond belief to find dear old Moses under the dirt! How had he survived without me to feed him? It's amazing how arrogant we humans can be! God

Two Turtle Doves: Our Christmas Card Picture
Our Christmas card picture this year of Jack and Adam. Details to notice 1) The double bruise on Jack’s forehead from slamming his face on the basement stairs and an unsuccessful attempt at tackling Adam 2) The matching Rugby shirts. I’m not a huge advocate of dressing the boys in the same outfit but Kathleen asks so little of me I felt this was a concession I could make 3) Adam’s teeth. 13 months old and the kid’s already got a set of choppers 4) The early formation of a vampire fang in the upper corner of Adam’s mouth 5) Adam’s red pupils. Irrefutable evidence that Adam is the evil yet lovable spawn of Satan 6) Though you can’t see it I’m tickling them with one hand while I snap the picture with the other. I know I’m their father, but good god these are a couple of good looking kids. (Quick post tonight. I’d apologize but I think it may be a relief to many. Not to worry. I’ll be back to my epic posts tomorrow.)

      Turtle Creek
I have been away from home for almost three months, and away from my roaster and green beans, which means I’ve had to deal with other people making (roasting) my coffee. The problem with that is that most of the time, it sits on a store shelf for much longer than it’s actually good [...]

Paintings for Turtle Ridge Wildife Center
During November, Art Helping Animals are highlighting the work of our newest Charity, Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center. I have done two new little paintings for them, a Fawn and a Racoon in watercolour. Both paintings are 3.5" x 2.5" on arches paper: TRWC is a is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and a Wildlife Rehabilitation & Care Center located in South Salem, Oregon. They care for all of Oregon's native wildlife species whether orphaned or injured, until they can be safely released back into the wild. They rely on donations and support to operate, and one of our members, Melinda Dalke, is a volunteer there (and took the reference photos of some of their current rescuees!)As with all my small paintings, these are supplied mounted in a 5" x 4" frame ready to hang, priced at a very reasonable £65 each plus shipping with a 20% donation to the charity. If you would like to purchase either, please get in touch! More paintings, prints and cards for our supported charities can be found

      Blogs: Wish you were turtle
(Salurion) Orc

      Two-headed turtle
A pet store has bought a two-headed turtle from a collector and plans to keep it on display, the store manager said. The 2-month-old turtle, actually conjoined red-eared slider twins, fits on a silver dollar. It has two heads sticking out from opposite ends of its shell, along with a pair of front feet on each side. But there is just one set of back feet and one tail. The turtle is apparently healthy, and the species can live 15 to 20 years, said Jay Jacoby, manager of Big Al’s Aquarium Supercenter in East Norriton. The turtle has not yet been named. The store would not disclose how much it paid. Read Full Article Related Posts

      Two Headed Turtle - Amazing
They say two heads are better than one, but this rare turtle doesn't seem to know whether it's coming or going - slowly, either way.The two-headed red slider turtle has turned up at a reptile centre in Pennsylvania, where owners are amazed by its freak appearance. The unnamed curiosity has two heads on opposite sides of a single shell, as well as six legs and a combined tail. A collector in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, passed the freak of nature to Big Al's Aquarium Supercenter in East Norriton. Jay Jacobi, the shop's exotic reptile manager, said: "The two heads seem to have their own thoughts, operating independently. "But sometimes they seem to put their two heads together and move in the same direction, feed together, walk together." Three names are in the running for the turtle. These include Gemini, after the Zodian twins symbol, and Blinky, the name of a three-eyed, radioactive fish in an episode of The Simpsons. The store is also pondering calling the turtle Limerick, after a n

Long Beach Aquarium - Sea Turtle
So a few more pictures from my Long Beach Aquarium trip a few weeks ago. I’ve always wanted to see a sea turtle and was excited to finally see one..except that when I saw it, it was laying on the floor facing away. Came back an hour later and he was finally facing me! And to make up for it, he started to wake up and swim around. I’ve posted pictures and then I was actually able to get a video of it also! Check it out!

Book notes – Way of the Turtle - Final post
Final post on my notes with my comments in italics Earlier posts on the same book here, here, here and hereThe thirteenth chapter discusses how robust systems can be developed. Systems which work in varying market situations are robust. The author gives an example from biological systems. He refers to the concept of simplicity and diversity. Simpler organisms are most resilient than complex ones which are adapted to specific environments. Also nature develops diverse organisms so that the ecosystem is shielded from the effects of a radical change in the environment. So systems or approaches built on these two concepts are more robust. An investor following a simple and diverse approach will be more successful than others. For example, a value investor (simple approach) following a graham style approach, aribtrage and DCF based approach (diversity) can be fairly successful in varying market circumstances. The fourteenth chapter discusses about the role of ego in investing. The simple rules

Book notes – Way of the Turtle - IV
My notes on the previous chapters of the book here, here and here. The ninth chapter discusses about the building blocks of trading such as breakouts, moving averages, volatility channels, time based exits and simple look backs in detail. The next chapter follows with a detailed discussion on various systems such as the ATR channel breakout, Bollinger breakout and Donchian trend etc. This chapter also gives the performance data for all these systems based on the historical data. For ex: donchian trend has a 10 year return of 30% p.a with a max drawdown of 38.7%.The important point in this chapter is the author’s emphasis on backtesting. Backtesting means that every system should be evaluated with respect historical data for returns and maximum drawdown. Backtesting may not help predict the future or ensure that the system will always work, but it would help to determine which system could be profitable in the future and what conditions are needed for the success of the system. My comm

Book notes – Way of the Turtle - III
The sixth chapter discussed various trading concepts such as support and resistance. These concepts are discussed in detail in this chapter with examples. The seventh chapter is crucial to help answer the question: How can you know if a system or a manager is a good one. I would suggest reading this chapter in detail and understanding it and applying it when selecting or evaluating a trading system. A lot of trading systems refer only to the returns and choose to ignore risk. The chapter refers to four types of risk.Drawdown – String of losses than can reduce capital in the trading account. It is the maximum loss the trader / manager or trading strategy incurred at any point of time.Low returns – period of small gain where the trader cannot make enough money to make a livingPrice shock – sudden price change which can wipe out a traderSystem death – Change in market dynamics that causes a previously profitable system to start losing money. The chapter discusses each type of risk i

Book notes – Way of the Turtle - II
I have been reading the book – Way of the turtle for the past few days and have found it to be a good book. It is a book on trading. I posted my notes on the first two chapters earlier.Notes on 3rd, 4th and 5th chapters follow –The third chapter refers to the risk of ruin. This is risk a trader faces that several of his trades will go against him and he could lose his entire capital. The way to manage this risk is via Money management. This involves putting the position in small chunks called as units which are sized based on the type of the market, volatility measure of the market etc (please refer to the book for more details). The third chapter refers to four key points- Trade with an edge: Find a trading strategy which can produce positive returns over the long run as it has a positive expectation (see an earlier post on edge, kelly’s formulae etc here)- Manage risk: Control risk via money management discussed earlier- Be consistent: execute plan consistently to achieve the p
