NOAA's National Data Buoy Center has successfully established four new tsunami stations in the northwest Pacific Ocean, east of Japan and Russia. The four Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami, or DART stations, help provide additional detection and warning capability for Hawaii, Alaska and the West Coast of the United States. "The DART network is part of an ongoing effort to increase the U.S. tsunami warning capability," said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator.

Last night, Karen and I dropped in for dinner at the restaurant where we had our first "official" date, Tsunami Sushi (1306 Fulton Street; 415-567-7664), in the NoPa neighborhood of San Francisco. Angry residents in Indonesia's Aceh province, the area hardest hit by the 2004 tsunami, disconnected part of a new early warning system after a false alarm sent panicky residents to the hills, officials said Wednesday. Three tsunami-warning sirens in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, and the surrounding areas went off accidentally Monday for about 30 minutes, causing hundreds of residents to flee their homes and run for higher ground. Many roads in the capital were clogged with people driving inland on motorbikes and cars. Afterward, residents in Lhoknga district disabled an early warning siren by removing its fuses and keeping them to prevent another false alarm. After much thought I have arrived at what I believe is an equitable solution to the potential disastrous impact the present foreclosure cloud can have on our economic environment.  In my thought process I applied simple market-based philosophies when considering the division of interests in a real estate transaction between borrower and lender, and even their relationship to surrounding markets. The threat of a tsunami from a strong earthquake that struck off Indonesia's eastern Moluccas islands on Tuesday has passed, Indonesia's meteorology agency said cited by Reuters. During our recent winter vacation in Maui, there was a Tsunami warning for the Hawaiian islands. After three hours the warning was reversed and it was all over as quickly as it had started but a lot of people wondered where they would go if something like this really did occur, not only in Hawaii, but in other beach resorts around the world.To get to higher ground, in West Maui where we were, would not necessarily be as easy as you might think, because there are very few roads that lead up the mountains to safety.The possibilities of enormous tragedy got me to thinking that vacation renters should be issued a detailed description of the quickest way for them to evacuate to safety.
