      Getting Around Portland: Smart Trips

The card directed me to a website, where I was able to order a ton, I mean a ton of free stuff pertaining to getting around my neighborhood and Portland in general. The packet also included a lot of information about wellness and conservation. The Portland Office of Transportation is providing the kits free of charge to encourage people to rideshare, walk, bike or take the bus instead of driving everywhere in our big honking SUVs. Weak Dollar Means Changes For Those Taking Trips
In India, the exchange rate is 28 cents for each rupee. That's why travel to China is expected to go up almost 13 and a half percent.Trips to India could jump 13 percent, but ultimately travelers fear the dollar's poor performance internationally will force people to think twice."I think in the long run, once they reevaluate it, they're still gonna want to travel cause the benefits outweigh the costs," said Rogers.Even with the higher exchange rates, travel to Europe will go up this summer where Americans are expected to pay just under six percent more for anything they purchase.

RVers plan shorter trips in response to gas prices
The impact of higher gas prices (with diesel at $4.15 I've seen locally) are being felt by RV campgrounds and resorts."Campers are not venturing as far or as wide as they might have," said Linda Profaizer, president of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds."They're definitely staying closer to home," she said. As prices are expected to inch up over $4 a gallon for gas, and over $5 for diesel this summer, it will continue to have more of an impact as RVers and vacationers change their travel plans. Petrol panic and shopping trips
Today I arranged to meet my Mum at Bluewater for a shopping excursion. I decided that I had better be off early to fill up the car's tank as I had heard various rumours about impending strikes by petrol workers in a refinery in Scotland, panic buying, rising prices at the pumps (more than usual) and petrol shortages. Sure enough, the first garage I came to had a queue back onto the road and the

      Local Trips California
With the price of gas expected to go over four dollars a gallon this summer many travelers are planning on staying put. Californians have a distinct advantage because they live in a state with so many different regions. Within a days drive you can find mountains, deserts, beaches and world class amusement parks. Many travelers plan on spending their vacation time at home and taking short day trips. Money saved on expensive lodging can be used for gas and dining. Combat the high gas prices by taking local trips and visiting one of California's distinct regions. Summer 2008 can still be fun, even with four dollar a gallon gas.

Slightly more drivers than last year are expected to jump in their cars from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends, the American Automobile Association reports. One of the best autos to handle the road? The Honda CR-V. It has 36 inches of cargo space, the roomiest among its closest contenders in the compact SUV category. That’s key for travelers who want ample space to load luggage, golf clubs and coolers. Malacca state administration develops the river since 2005 to 'pollution-free water', gardens on its banks and pedestrian walkways along the river. This is the river where the war begin and end, and also the place where Melaka (Malacca) began. It was a busy port and a tourism river today. Joe Douglas Beats Own Revenge of the Mummy Record - 132 Trips!
Joe Douglas, who earlier in the month set a record for riding Universal Studios Revenge of the Mummy dark ride/roller coaster, has broken his 101 trip record.  Demolished it actually.  132 trips. Joe posted an update in my earlier blog posting that the wait times were only around 5 minutes all day. Universal should take advantage or Joe’s fandom and issue a press release about his accomplishment.  Even better, they could work out a day with Joe where he is able to ride consecutively w/o getting off except for a needed break (bathroom, stretch, etc.)  By cutting out the time Joe would spend in the queue- either walking or waiting, Joe should be able to eclipse the 132 number.   During a slow day, this would have little impact on the park visitors.  If Joe is alone, they could fill the rest of his row with others.  This could be easy publicity.  Especially if they do it now.  Universal is trying to do more for Christmas and this would be yet another opportunity for them t

Colorado Ski Trips Are Being Postponed
Breckenridge reports 9 inches of snow today. However, a rippin skier friend of ours, also known as Corn Muncher, postponed his trip to Colorado due to the lack of snow. This weekend is the 36 hour weekend at Keystone. Last year, I remember being in waist deep pow pow in the outback. This year, I will not be in waist deep powder at Keystone during the 36 hour weekend. Actually, nobody will be in waist deep powder. Unless of course there is some miraculous BIG DUMP! I'm not complaining, so please do not take it that way. Just giving you the facts. I am being patient, as I am sure many of you are. Keep on praying to the snow gods and our wish of a monstrous season will arrive! If you have plans to ski this season and there's not enough snow, just be like Corn Muncher and postpone your trip as opposed to cancelling. INDUSTRY PAID FOR SAFETY CHIEF’S TRIPS
Revelations add to pressure for Nord's resignationActing Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Nancy Nord is under more pressure today in the wake of revelations that industries regulated by her agency have paid for her travel. The Washington Post reports Nord has traveled to China and other destinations with various industries picking up the tab.According to the report, both Nord and her predecessor, Hal Stratton, took dozens of trips paid for by the toy, appliance and children's furniture industries and others they regulate. The Post cited internal CPSC documents it said showed the connections. The records reportedly show that Stratton, and then Nord, made nearly 30 trips since 2002 that were at least partially paid by trade associations or manufacturers. In some cases, the Post reports, some industries paying for travel – such as the toy industry – have been involved in huge recalls of dangerous products.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/11

Dentsu Executive offends and humiliates employee with brothel and onsen trips
The Associated Press is reporting some embarrassing news about Dentsu, Japan’s largest advertising agency. Steve Biegel, a former executive of Dentsu’s U.S. branch, is suing the company because CEO Toyo Shigeta forced Biegel into awkward, sexually charged situations: Shigeta took them to a brothel, leaving Biegel, who is married, offended and humiliated that he had been forced or duped into going there, the lawsuit said. It said Shigeta later demanded they participate in prostitution and became angry when they did not, accusing them of being “no fun.” The lawsuit said Shigeta later told them that having sex with prostitutes was a proper style of conducting business and commemorating business dealings. According to the lawsuit, Biegel, of Woodbury, N.Y., was “horrified, offended and humiliated by this sexually debasing experience of being forced to attend a brothel imposed on him as a condition of his employment.” On another business trip to Tokyo in October 2

How to Survive Your Husband's Business Trips
Andrew travels from time to time with his job and at first it wasn't too pleasant but I've figured out how to make it nearly a vacation. Not quite, but nearly.1. Sleep when you want to sleep. This means I stay up late (for me that's 11 pm), get up late (maybe as late at 7:15!) or even--as I did this morning--get up at 5 am to blog. Andrew's always been a morning person so we go to bed early and get up early but if he's gone I'm treating myself to the wildly hedonistic practice of staying up to watch the 10 o'clock news.2. Eat what you want to eat. For me, this is all about the mushrooms. And the quiche. Gotta have quiche when I'm eating alone. Oh wait, I'm not eating alone--I've got four children with me at the table. No wonder it's so noisy.3. Sleep where you want to sleep. I can sleep on my side of the bed or on his side or smack in the middle, who's going to stop me? In fact, I think I've settled on the best way of it all--sleeping on my side but only foldi

      Trips cancelled
My trips to Hanoi and Jakarta next week were cancelled, very last minute. It was just yesterday that my boss told me to cancel them. Tickets were already issued so we will have to pay for a 'penalty' fee to airline. But the cost would be minimal compared to the total amount that the whole trip would take.I was supposed to have a stressful trip next week. Original plan was to fly to Hanoi on Monday, conduct workshop on Tuesday, fly from Hanoi to KL and with 1h15min to transit to Jakarta. A very short time that can be easily screwed up if Hanoi-KL sector is delayed even slightly. If miss the flight to Jakarta I'd miss the last flight out.But all worries no longer a concern, coz I'm not going anywhere for the rest of this year! Why? Because we have just realized we blown our travel budget! When I tried to get the latest finance figure, I found out that the budget that we're working on, is entirely different from what finance has. The truth is, we've been using a wrong budget n

      The feral bully trips
"A week", mused Harold Wilson, "is a long time in politics". A week ago, Gordon Brown had the Conservatives on the back foot. They were attempting to react to the threat of an early election, a threat that never materialised. Brown was playing low politics and putting them in disarray. Cameron's conference speech was well received, but doubts remained over his substance and Prime Ministerial quality. Labour were ahead in the polls and there was talk of a hundred seat majority.A week later, Brown looks like a brooding opportunist. He chewed over the tough meat of an early election for too long, leaving the nation frustrated at his political games. The Conservatives seemed up for an election, baiting Brown into dissolving Parliament. Instead of ending the speculation, Brown allowed it to continue, hoping it would continue to damage the Opposition. However, even before he ruled out an election, the Conservatives were chasing him in the polls.Brown's plan backfired. His attempt to sit ba

Preparing For Hiking Trips And Holidays
By: Peter WilsonHiking can be a great experience, but you will want to prepare before you take off, especially if you are a beginner hiker. Though not always the case, hiking is not like traditional vacations which require preparation in terms of locating your accommodation, finding a beach front vacation rental or other details such holidays entail. Hiking requires preparation related to fitness and essential items specific to hiking. Of course, you want to make sure you have achieved general fitness as hiking requires endurance and strength. Once you have achieved a basic fitness level in preparation for your hike, a few specialized activities specifically related to hiking that can help you prepare even more. Though not essential, walking barefoot around the yard or house can help toughen the soles of your feet. Yes, you will be wearing hiking boots and quality socks but it isnt a bad idea to have something under your socks that is tougher than soft, tender skin. Benzoin is a specia

Art of Travel: 7 Trips to New Worlds
I’ve noticed that some artists choose to live and work in one place, rarely leaving the confines of ‘home’. Others take journeys in their hometown, or to foreign lands. Others travel inside their own body or create virtual journeys through sound. Some artists even make travel an integral part of their work and life. This got me thinking about different ways people — all of us — “travel” day after day, week after week, year after year. Sometimes we travel without meaning to; sometimes we travel and go nowhere; sometimes the journey takes us to unexpected places. Here are the stories of a few different artists, all working on the many different meanings of “travel”. The Art of travel: The world from a new angle #1: Trading Places There are journeys you make every day: to get to work, to pick up the kids from school, to run errands. It’s a form of travel that quickly becomes mundane through repetition and familiarity. Yet

We truly do everything together.  I know that some people even choose to vacation apart from their children, but that is something we could never do.  Now the trip which has been looming on the horizon is clearly in view. The Underwater Photographer - Lightening Up for International Dive Trips"Hey, Lighten-up!STORY BY BONNIE PELNARGetting penalized for overweight baggage is an all-too-often occurrence for most underwater photographers, but when the airlines lowered the baggage weight allowance to 50 pounds per bag for domestic flights things got even worse.
