      McCain Tries Outdated Scare Tactics
On Thursday, John McCain bought into the standard Republican national security scare tactic. This signals a new low for McCain which lowers the bar further in what was supposed to be a “respectful campaign” from the “straight talk express”. “All I can say is: If Senator Obama wants to sit down across the table from the leader of a country that calls Israel a stinking corpse, and co

McCain Tries to Dodge Questions About Problem Temper
It's nice to see McCain finally forced to play a little defense, poorly.  During a Sunday interview show, George Stephanopoulos was apparently shamed into asking McCain at least one or two real questions about the senator's problem temper (though he failed to ask the obvious follow-ups).  McCain variously tried to dismiss the stories of his screaming, cursing at, and scaring the hell out of colleagues as old news, exaggerations, lies, or the result of his"passion". My first question is: which is it?  Is McCain saying that his fellow Republicans who were taken aback by his temper are liars?  But that's not the real point: McCain's goal was to distract from the real issue– that several prominent Republicans have questioned McCain's fitness to serve as president.  Is McCain cl

ViewSonic tries real hard with $499 PJ513DB projector We applaud the effort, we really do, but even $499 for a projector touting a lowly 800 x 600 native resolution, 2,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,200 lumens is a tad steep in our eyes. Then again, you'll likely find ViewSonic's 5-pound PJ513DB marginally cheaper on the street, and of course, it's quite obvious the outfit was aiming this one at those deep-pocketed boardroom bigwigs and district superintendents. Nevertheless, this DLP PJ promises to toss up a visible image even in well-lit rooms, and you'll find composite / S-Video / component inputs 'round back to go along with the VGA in / out ports and the audio input. Knock off another Benjamin or up that resolution a hair, and maybe then we'll talk.(Via Engadget.)

NY Man Tries Using Counterfeit Money for Bail
It was bad enough when Cyheam Forney made an illegal left turn in front of a Suffolk County police sergeant. That was just the start. After being pulled over by Sgt. Daniel Lynch, Forney, 31, couldn't produce a license. Nor did he have any other identification. Forney gave Lynch his name, and Lynch ran his name. Turns out that Forney's license had been suspended 35 times. Taken to the Second Precinct in Huntington, Forney was issued summonses for the illegal turn, too-dark tinted windows, unlicensed operation, and sub-standard tires. Whoa. The good thing was, he was offered $500 bail. The bad thing was, when he tried to pay with cash, one of the officers noticed one of the bills looked - well, fake. "He said some guy gave it to him when he was playing dice the night before,"

Many of these independent studies were funded by the National Institutes of Health. BPA is used in a number of different plastic products, including baby bottles.

Reaching Out And Failure; Trembley Tries To Get Cal and Brooks To Be More Active with the Orioles...
This evening while at home chilling out, I decided to read "Trembley Tries Wooing Two Big Birds Back To The Nest" by the Baltimore Sun's Roch Kubatko.Well, the content of the article made me glad to see that the team, spearheaded by Dave Trembley, are reaching out to the stars of yesteryear; however, I am very dumbfounded as to why the Orioles had not made the overture to players earlier.Obviously, we see Jim Palmer, Boog Powell, Rick Dempsey show-up at the Yard participating in team activities, but not Brooks, Frank, Eddie Murray or other former Orioles.Granted, all these guys have their own lives, but unlike let's say the Yankees & Red Sox, why do so few stars bother to show up?This passage by Brooks Robinson is a bit sad & may tell us more than we want to know:"The chances of Ro

Pentagon Tries To Keep Inconvenient Truth on Iraq a Secret
Yesterday a Pentagon study showed that there was no connection between al Qaeda and Saddam. This contradicted claims made by the Bush administration to invade Iraq. It appears that the Bush administration wants to keep this evidence that they were wrong, and probably lying, from being disseminated. The Debian server — a non-expert tries to roll his own
I decided to start from scratch with my Debian server project. Last time I was too hasty in adding the open-source version of Movable Type to my installation and intermingling files before I was ready. This time I'm going to be a lot more methodical and make sure that Apache and MySQL are working properly -- meaning I can run CGI scripts and have a directory dedicated to same -- before I start with Movable Type. I could've removed Apache, done some cleanup and gone from there, but since I didn't have much "invested" in the install, I wiped the drive and started over.

News: Bush Tries to Justify Torture.
Fact: US President Bush vetoed a bill that would have banned the CIA from "waterboarding" or "simulated drowning", and other coercive interrogation methods, to gain information from suspected terrorists. (link)Fact: The bill would have limited the CIA to 19 interrogation techniques that are used by the military and spelled out in the Army Field Manual. In a recent speech, Bush said he vetoed the measure because it is important for the CIA to have a separate and classified interrogation program for suspected terrorists who possess critical information about possible plots against the United States. American Woman Cooks Pizza in Hotel Safe … Or At Least Tries To
You really can’t make this stuff up. Hotel staff are used to guests using their rooms to do strange things. But this one takes the cake … er … pizza. A guest at the New Zealand’s $300 a night Hermitage Hotel in Mount Cook called staff to her room claiming that she couldn't get her microwave oven to open, and she'd stuffed a frozen pizza in there. When staff rushed in, they found her standing with a puzzled expression on her face in front of … wait for it … the wall safe. The guest, an American woman in her forties, apparently mistook the safe for an oven. Getting the pizza out was no laughing matter. The woman had punched in all kinds of numbers trying to get it to open, and had jumbled up the code. After trying unsuccessfully for hours, the staff was forced to track down the guy responsible for the master codes to the hotel safes.
