The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has recently been made aware of several complaints from pet owners and veterinarians that multiple brands of jerky treats manufactured in China have been making pets sick. Symptoms of illness have included vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. To our knowledge, no deaths have been reported.Guess they don't read my blog.The AVMA posted an alert on its Web site on September 13 to inform its members and the public about what was known. Today, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) issued a statement saying it also has become aware of an unusual number of dogs presenting similar symptoms and abnormal test results associated with consumption of some jerky treats. As of this morning, PetSmart has pulled various Smokehouse Brand dog treats off of their shelves. There have been reports of pets becoming ill after eating the treats, and as a precaution, PetSmart has removed the products. There has been no formal recall as of yet. Pet food and treats, like many other types of foods, can be susceptible to harmful bacterial contamination. During calendar year 2007, 15 pet products have been recalled due to Salmonella contamination; however, to date none of these products have been directly linked to human illness. The Food and Drug Administration said it's fielded more than 70 complaints, involving more than 95 dogs, from owners who believe their animals fell sick after eating the products, sold variously as chicken tenders, strips or treats. Do any of your horses receive treats from you? And if they do, what are they? Is there anything unusual that your horse likes to eat? I know alot of people out there don't approve of treats, but I like to give my girls occasional treats. And when I do give them treats, it must be even. I swear they count. I know some horses will eat weird people food, but I'm always afraid to let them try odd people food, but that's just me. The treats my girls will get on occasion are apples, pears, carrots, regular horse treats of most varieties, including raisin treats, butterscotch, licorice and peppermints. It is so easy to just grab a bag of chips and a can of coke while I am working. I do not want to stop to cook something for myself! I do not always eat healthy. So this Thursday Thirteen is all about other ways that you can treat yourself , so that you are not grabbing sweets and junk. 1. Go Outside! Go for a walk, a long drive in the country, go to the park, etc. I know this is a hard one now that it is colder weather. But I do go out on my back porch every once in a while to get a breath of fresh(and cold) air. It does wake me up!2. Buy yourself some flowers. 3. Take a relaxing bubble bath. Did Santa visit us?The handful of us who were in the office today got to experience quite a treat. Well, treats.... Apparently a package was attempted delivery to us on Monday but since we were out-of-the-office we got it today. And in it was a wonderful mix of cookies, candy, and sweets! Yum! Courtesy of Postie Jody there was chocolate-covered peanut brittle (my personal weakness), pretzel rods with one end loaded with chocolate, peanut butter brownies with chocolate drizzles, and cookies with candy in the middle. What a great pick-me-up for the first day back from a four-day weekend! We all dove at the box like ravage beasts.
