Yet the images of violence that flash across the nightly news are just an unfortunate subplot in the greater story of the region, which boasts some of the most pristine and, yes, tranquil attractions in the world. Tranquil--for now, that is. The World Tourism Organization reports that 46 million forei

Built in the 1880s, Kennywood Park has offered families in the Pittsburgh region joy and amusement for well over a century. And while the park does a great job of creating new attractions that keep us spellbound, it also hasn't forgotten its roots. Meandering around the winding paths of this historic summer haven, it's not hard to imagine Gibson girls and their beaus doing the same. And much of th

Knowing he would die soon, a rich man had all his assets converted into gold bars, put them in a big bag on his bed, draped his body over the bag of gold, and breathed his last. Hello everyone,Yeah, yeah, yeah, I haven't updated my blog in awhile. It's been a challenging few weeks both personally and professionally, so I've been laying low.All is generally well, though, and today life is especially fabulous. I'm happy to report I'm on vacation until April 27. Hooray!I'm spending part of my vacation in Iowa, visiting my dad and my ailing (but getting better) momma. Their newborn daughter, beautiful little Charlotte, is struggling with several pretty large health problems. She had a tracheotomy last week, and will be in the hospital for another 2 - 3 weeks. Ash Wednesday is a solemn day in many churches. The human made traditions of Lent begin with a day of remembrance and awe. We come to church clean and leave smudged with ash. We hear words as the ash is placed on our heads or hands, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
Our very public display of piety on Ash Wednesday stands in immediate tension with Jesus own words

Walt Disney Treasures - The Chronological Donald, Volume Three (1947 - 1950) (1948).
Yep, another Disney movie - aren’t they great?! I loved Donald Duck when I was a kid - and I still do! To this day, whenever I think of Donald Duck I remember one of our neighbors, Mr. Hartman. He lived across the street from us when I was a little kid and he could imitate Donald Duck so well that I it left me awestruck. It probably didn’t take much to impress a 4 year old, but since I liked Donald Duck so much it was fun to listen to him imitate the silly duck. What fond memories those are!
I haven’t seen volumes one and two of the Chronological Donald, but I may have to get them after seeing this one. I imagine they’re just as good as volume three - after all, we’re talking about Donald Duck! There’s simply nothing like these old cartoons - they’re good viewing for little kids and even those of us who are just kids at heart. Besides Donald, the cartoons inclu

During the Holiday season, many of us will receive more gifts than we deserve, and few that we actually need. As you're opening your presents, it's important to remember that millions of elderly, homeless, abandoned or oprhaned people throughout the world will not receive material gifts or fellowship this Holiday. Instead, the joy they see around them will only serve as an unpleasant reminder of the fact that they're alone. Give thanks, therefore, for the blessings that you have both material and spiritual, but do not...

The final batch of nominations for TW2B 2007 included two famous assets of the city, and it was good to learn that they are being recommended by disabled visitors. We have had a nomination for the University Botanic Gardens, and this is the second time it has been recommended for the special tours they arrange for visitors with visual impairment. To quote from the nomination form:"They offer free monthly guided walks for visually impaired people. These focus on non-visual aspects of the garden and include smelling highly scented plants, stroking bark and bird song. Staff and volunteers are sensitive to the needs of visually impaired people."I first went to the Botanics soon after I moved here because I signed up as a volunteer for Crossroads and I was given the job of taking a gentleman out in a wheelchair. He knew Cambridge like the back of his hand, but could not speak following a stroke, so I just followed his hand signals, and one day found myself in the Gardens. It was wonderful! O
The early days Amsterdam was founded as a fishing village around the thirteenth century. During the 14th, but especially the 15th century, Amsterdam underwent a rapid development, which laid the foundation for the Golden Age, when the city became the staple market of the world. The year 1672 was a year of disaster for the Dutch Republic with the French and English attacking simultaneously. Nevertheless, Amsterdam managed to consolidate its prosperity during the period 1672-1795 and managed to retain its position as the financial center of Europe. During the French occupation (1795-1813), Amsterdam suffered badly from the economic recession, a state of affairs reflected by the stagnation of the demographic development. The period 1813-1940 is marked by economic recovery and, from 1870 onwards, by expansion and a rapid population growth, as result of the Industrial Revolution which triggered off a New Golden Age. Shortly before the First World War the city began expanding and new suburbs

I wanted to lend a little more context to this passage that I have seen as we read through the sermon on the mount. The passage I’m talking about is:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. -Matthew 6:18-21
First of all you have to notice it’s a dichotomy. “Do Not…But…” If Jesus wanted to put a disclaimer in I think he would have, and if he wanted to say you could do both at the same time (treasures on earth and in heaven) he would have said it differently.
But, I’m still a little skeptical so some more context will help.
Jesus has already said some life changing, paradigm shifting, wealth challenging, irrational (by our logic), sacrifice-requiring types of stuff. And rem
*The 110 year old cast iron skillet that my great-great grandmother started housekeeping with. *My Nan’s mother’s silver biscuit pan. *An old antique wooden rolling pin, my mother gave to me. *My Dad’s old copy of the essential “Joy of Cooking” cookbook, with a crease in the binding found on page with the chocolate chip cookies recipe. These are the things I treasure most in my kitchen. I use my great-great grandmother’s iron skillet nearly every day of the week. Sometimes I wonder at the life that skillet has seen, the foods it has contained. My great-grandmother made cornbread in that skillet nearly every day. She also made fried chicken, hamburger steak, gravy, sausage, and whatever else happened to show up on the farm. I’m blessed to know my great-grandmother, a beautiful woman with 97 years behind her. Her son and daughter-in-law live close by and with their help, my great-grandmother is able to continue to live on her own. A reminder of her strength is in t

The reality of that fantasy was no longer a dream for one life long treasure hunter named Mel Fisher (1922-1998).

"We always knew that the Thracians had great wealth from references in ancient texts," says James Sickinger, a professor at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. "These findings show that the Thracians had wealth that rivaled that of any other great kingdom of the time." The Thracians were known as great warriors; Spartacus, the gladiator slave who led a rebel war against the Romans, was a Thracian. And they were renowned throughout the ancient world as expert metalworkers; in The Iliad, Homer describes the Thracian King's golden armor as "a wonder to behold, such as it is in no wise fit for mortal men to bear, but for the deathless gods." With little else to go on, historians have tended to rely on ancient Greek depictions of the Thracians as a savage, tribal society that had no politics and no alphabet of its own. But after three months of digging, Kitov surfaced with over 130 pieces of magnificent jewelry, weaponry and ritual artifacts that show Thracian culture rival

Many ancient myths are associated with Crete and its major claim to fame is being home to an infant Zeus. According to Greek mythology, Zeus was the supreme god, who had the unnerving ability to throw thunderbolts.
Similar to how DNA banks are being created to store genetic data on endangered animals, archaeologists now are preserving archaeological treasures in the virtual world, for accuracy, ease of study, and in case real world problems, like erosion, lead to damage or destruction. The new 3-D process, developed by a nonprofit organization Institute for Study and Integration of Graphical Heritage Techniques (called Insight), gradually is replacing old data-gathering techniques, which rely upon time-consuming single shot photography and hand-drawn images. Insight's developers use a variety of technologies, combined with custom designed computer software, to digitally recreate buildings and objects. Many archaeological sites worldwide are in peril. Recently, for example, the Taliban destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas, an American film crew damaged Machu Picchu, organized theft in Cambodia hurt Khmer antiquities and Egypt's Aswan Dam led to erosion of buildings and hieroglyphics. There is a race to
