We’ve taken a look at what Traumatic Incident Reduction, or TIR, is. Now let’s take a look at how you can put it to work for your clients. A TIR session begins with clients thinking of a specific past trauma they want to move beyond. Clients treat the past trauma like a movie, and play it in their heads from start to finish without talking about the incident. After clients have “viewed” the movie of the past traumatic incident, they describe what happened in it and their reactions to viewing it. Then, clients “rewind” the movie and replay it. After replaying the movie several times, clients will experience an emotional peak. As they continue to replay the movie, their negative emotions will eventually lessen. They continue to replay the movie until they no longer have a

"I have never had a more traumatic and disheartening experience," he writes, referring to his time as a visiting professor at FAMU in 2004-2005. He cites late paychecks, phantom employees and "whimsical decrees by top administration officials." Rubin's post may be significant because it goes public with complaints other FAMU professors have been making privately for years. Rubin attended Stanford University as an undergrad and got his law degree from Berkeley. He now teaches at Appalachian School of Law in Virginia, where his faculty bio does not mention FAMU. Daud Kilau is a veteran artist in this country and there is simply no one who can match up to his inimitability. He always wears his black curls thick and fake looking, plastered to his head. His ward robe is so psychedelic, one need to wear a sun glass when opening his closet else risking the blinding of the eyes due to dazzling effects from all his sequined and beaded outfits, in the brightest hue of all colors of the rainbow. I think that is why M Daud Kilau himself is cross eyed. You, like myself may have sustained a traumatic brain injury that has presented you with various challenges to overcome. Your brain injury may have led you to develop a learning disability or a mental health challenge. I am also confronted by and challenged with a learning disability as well as other neurological limitations. These obstacles and challenges can leave us feeling very alone and overwhelmed. Consequently, you may be confused, discouraged and despondent by your present circumstances. In our frustration, you and I may want to isolate and cut our selves off from other people, but the good news is that you and I do not have to be alone in our struggle to accept our reality. We can reach out to other people and in the process find strength and comfort...h

      A Traumatic Experience
The photo in this entry is Drop by Drop. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. A year ago today I was nearly raped by a man that threatened my life. I can only credit God for allowing me to survive that experience. I would rather not share details of what happened, so I'll share a video I made. I shot it a few months afterwards. It is a video of the place where it happened. I went back just to get some closure. I'm sharing this today to show how I'm still affected by what happened, but it will never take my identity. I encourage comments on my writings. Visit the site to leave your feedback. :D Need more exposure for your website? Advertise on One Day At a Time today!

When Post Traumatic Stress Disorder becomes your own fault
Treating the trauma of war – fairly - Yahoo! News: The US is doing what warring countries have done since the First World War, changing the definition of what ‘Shell Shock’ or ‘Post Traumatic Stress Disorder’ (PTSD) means. In this article Treating the trauma of war – fairly we learn that the US military is trying to wiggle out of long-term costs by taking the blame from war and placing it on the soldier: The military, however, has changed the terms and given many thousands of enlisted men and women a new diagnosis: “personality disorder.” While the government would be obliged to care for veterans suffering from combat-related trauma, a personality disorder – defined as an ingrained, maladaptive way of orienting oneself to the world – predates a soldier’s tour of duty (read: preexisting condition). This absolves Uncle Sam of any responsibility for the person’s mental suffering. The new diagnostic label sends the message: This

      Sudden Traumatic Loss
No one is prepared for the phone call or the knock on the door telling you that a loved one has been killed. Your first response is generally denial – “It can’t be so; I just saw him this morning.” or “I just got off the phone with her.” This denial leads to a kind of numbness which is nature’s way of protecting us from a reality we cannot yet process. The numbness can help us navigate through the initial days when decisions need to be made. It can be difficult to have some of these decisions taken away. Often with a traumatic death, the coroner must keep the body until all necessary knowledge is gleaned. Even when the body is released, decisions must be made about whether or not to have a service and what should be included if you decide to have one. It’s unlikely that you have already had an opportunity to discuss your loved ones wishes in this regard. If you have – and I recommend that you do – your decisions may be less difficult to make. If not, you

      Organizational Tip #1: Post-traumatic Martha Stewart-itis syndrome
So, who feels more stressed out AFTER reading Martha Stewart's mag? Maybe I have problems, but I find her small font and perfect home layouts and instructions for creating your own doily to be overwhelming. I just feel like an inadequate failure. And to boot, I can barely keep up with the millions of things I need to do involving daily life maintenance. I haven't even gotten to the beauty routine I apparently should be doing. Alas, I seek to share life tips that will not add more weight to your to-do lists, but will actually lessen your load. I am also struggling to juggle multiple responsibilities as many other ladies are these days. My first tip is not so much a tip as a change in mindset. As a female, we seek to please. When I get an email, I feel a compulsion not to offend the sender by waiting too long to write back. When the phone rings, I think, yikes, must get to it! When someone rings the door bell, I throw on whatever scraps are nearby and aim a slightly presentable appeara

We Can Remember it for You Wholesale Post-traumatic stress disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that some people develop after seeing or living through an event that caused or threatened serious harm or death. Symptoms include flashbacks or bad dreams, emotional numbness, intense guilt or worry, angry outbursts, feeling “on edge,” or avoiding thoughts and situations that remind them of the trauma. In PTSD, these symptoms last at least one month.Currently, many scientists are focusing on genes that play a role in creating fear memories. Understanding how fear memories are created may help to refine or find new interventions for reducing the symptoms of PTSD. For example, PTSD researchers have pinpointed genes that make:Stathmin, a protein needed to form fear memories. In one study, mice that did not make stathmin were less likely than normal mice to “freeze,” a natural, protective response to danger, after being exposed to a fearful experience. They also showed less innate fear by exploring open spaces more willin

At least the interview wasn’t traumatic.
{summary}Yes, Rosco has taken to his binky again.  Lately he’s been gnawing on his fingers like they’re going out of style and shrieking like a hurt dingo whenever he’s not sucking on something, so I gave it back to him.  The drooling has intensified 1000% in the past few days so I suppose he may be at the beginning stage of teething.  If not, he’s been a really, really, REALLY, grumpy child just for the hell of it. In case you’re wondering about the interview, it was fine.  I dropped Ros off at the babysitter’s where he got to observe the fine art that is crawling from the mom’s 9-month-old.  When we got home the first thing he wanted to do when I put him on the floor was practice worm-like undulations while on his belly.  His next trick is to put one leg out sideways like a bike kick-stand to try to get his body up.  He got lazy after managing to propel himself a few inches forward and quit travelling befo

      Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Even though it’s currently difficult to post regularly, I’ve realised that I feel compelled to post something for each date that should have a post, even if I do so retrospectively or inadequately. I find the thought of discontinuing this rather impressive chain of tri-daily posts very unsettling. So…technically this is a post……

      Traumatic Post Stress Disorder
Lennox Hardy was back at school today and he knows I am helping Mr Hopgood with his computer club tomorrow.Ryan Thompson passed a note to me in geography that read, 'Teacher's Pet Your Dead' in Lennox's giant letters. The flu hasn't improved his hand writing I notice, or his grammar.2 minutes and 32 seconds. A new record from school to home. But I will really have to get my own key soon. I can't even hide in my own back garden as Mum keeps the back gate padlocked against optimistic burglars. I had to hide behind no.5's hedge instead; which isn't the same at all. Luckily no.5 were all out at work. I saw Mr Purefoy snooping out of his window. I was tempted to give him the 'V' sign, but I know he will only tell Mum.Another of his fish has gone missing. Yesterday, as Mum was leaving for work, he shouted from his porch, 'That's another one hundred pounds your cat owes me!'I must have misheard. Surely fish don't cost that much? The loss of his carp must be causing Mr Purefoy to

Virtual war on post-traumatic stress disorder
A screenshot of Full Spectrum Warrior the game Virtual Iraq is based onSan Francisco: Traumatised US soldiers are being treated for post-war psychological disorders by going out on patrol in a computer-generated "virtual Iraq".Skip Rizzo, a psychologist at the University of Southern California, USA, has helped create a program that simulates life in the war zone for soldiers suffering from conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The ground-breaking treatment allows soldiers to experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of a war-zone, courtesy of wrap-around goggles linked to a startlingly realistic virtual world. The idea is to re-introduce veterans to the experiences that have inflicted mental scars until gradually they are no longer haunted by the memories - a long-established therapeutic technique known as "exposure therapy'."What we do is put somebody in a virtual war zone but at a level where there will be minimal anxiety," Rizzo said. New guidelines allow troops with traumatic stress disorders to redeploy
By Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes WASHINGTON - Troops with bipolar and psychotic disorders cannot deploy into Iraq or Afghanistan but those recovering from traumatic stress disorders still can, under new defense guidelines released this week. Defense health officials said the new guidance is designed to clarify existing policy, not to replace any current practices dealing with deploying servicemembers with mental health issues. "What we found was that [health officials] had some questions about exactly what the regulations were," said Terry Jones, spokesman for Dr. William Winkenwerder, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs. "These are much more specific guidelines to help them evaluate troops." More... © 2006 Stars and Stripes. All Rights Reserved.Comment:     !
