A traumatic event is much more likely to result in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults who experienced trauma in childhood - but certain gene variations raise the risk considerably if the childhood trauma involved physical or sexual abuse, scientists have found. Rebekah G. Bradley, Ph.D., of the Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, presented the findings at a media briefing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. "Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating stress-related psychiatric disorder, with prevalence rates of at least 7 percent to 8 percent in the U.S. population, and with much higher rates among combat veterans and those living in high-violence areas. Initially viewed as a potentially normative response to traumatic exposure, it became clear

Helping Your Client Respond to Trauma*
It’s important to remember that your clients’ reactions to a trauma can be short, or it can be long-lived. Regardless of their reaction time, it’s important to remember most of them will react. Keep in mind how your clients respond to trauma depends on a few things: • How severe was the trauma? • How long did the trauma last? • How strong (physically and/or emotionally) were they before the traumatic event? Your clients’ answers to these questions will help you determine how they will respond to a traumatic event. Remember, your clients can have both physical and emotional reactions to trauma. Some of the more common emotional reactions clients tend to exhibit include:

Helping Your Client Cope with Stress and Trauma*
We all experience stress…but sometimes your clients may need a little help from you to learn how to manage their stress – particularly when trauma is involved. As therapists and first responders, it’s important we remind our clients that stress is a part of life – and not all stress is bad stress. Explain to your client sometimes, stress can even be good for them. How? Because it can motivate them. Oftentimes, the stress our clients feel from a deadline they have to meet motivates them to get the task done. But it’s also important we make them aware that too much stress can actually be harmful. At least once a week the evening news runs a story about how stress can cause heart attacks, or how it can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to getting sick.

Trauma – What Is It and How Does It Affect Your Clients?*
As therapists and first responders, we’re all familiar with the term “trauma”, but how many of us really know what trauma is and how trauma can affect our clients’ bodies and lives? The basic definition of trauma is a “shock to the body and/or emotions”. Based on that definition, most of us can probably say we have clients who have experienced trauma at least once in their lives. Life is tough. We need to help our clients understand that oftentimes they have no control over trauma entering their lives…and rarely have time to prepare. If your clients suddenly find themselves thrown into a traumatic event, it’s important to make sure they know how it can affect them – both physically and emotionally. We all know trauma can affect our clients physically, like injurie

      Santa photo trauma
Today was one of those momentous days that rolls around every year at about this time - Santa photo time! Every year thousands of screaming toddlers and babies are dragged by their parents down to the local shopping centre and sat on some elderly stranger’s knee to be photographed. Today it was the turn of our toddler and baby, Little Miss and Usurper. Of course Wife being Wife the local shopping centre Santa wasn’t up to scratch, something to do with his belly not being round and firm enough, or his ‘HO HO HO’ not quite being jolly enough, or some such thing, so the whole tribe had to go for a 45 minute drive to the shopping centre near the in-laws. The Santa there was firm of belly, fluffy of whisker, with a lovely baritone laugh and just the right twinkle in his eye - more to Wifes liking when it comes to shopping centre Santa’s to be part of our Christmas photo tradition. Patiently we waited our turn as we valiantly tried to keep Little Miss from mess

I started hyperventilating, crying, and shrieking really loud, and if you heard it, you would not have believed such loud sounds could come out of such a small Jelly Bean! We were off to the vet's office. At first I waited in my box in that little room, waiting for Dr. Staph. I was shaking so hard that my Mom took me out of the box and held me while we waited some more. Then a girl came in and told mom that she would weigh me and take my temperature.....yeah, I knew what that meant.....I'd get a cold thermometer up my butt.......not a good feeling, let me tell you! After I came back from that ordeal, I decided to hide my face as hard as I could in mom's arms, so maybe nobody could find me! But, it did not work. Dr. Staph came in and gave me my yearly exam, and checked all my parts to make sure I was healthy. He also gave me my rabies s

      An Analysis Of Trauma
By: malo The common image for trauma and traumatic experiences usually encompasses the negative extremes of life. Rape, childhood abuse, war, mass destruction, and natural disasters are all seen as the causes of trauma. They are valid causes, to be sure, but they are not the only reasons. Certainly, they are the ones that have cast the greatest shadow over the collective popular consciousness, with things like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) becoming more and more common knowledge. The images of Vietnam war veterans still unable to adjust to civilian life after so much time also take home with them things from the event as a grim reminder. However, people are still unaware of another piece in the puzzle. One that has potentially deeper consequences for the traumatized than PTSD. Originally, the sorts of things covered by trauma were limited in scope. Originally, it only covered men who had survived the horrors of war and had their mental health permanently scarred by it. Progression Of HIV, Early Death Affected By Lifetime Trauma
Even though effective drug cocktails have improved the outlook for many patients with HIV, disease progression, including the time from AIDS onset to death, varies widely from patient to patient. Now, a study led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine provides new evidence that psychological factors play a role in disease progression. The study is the first-known in the era of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV to show that traumatic life events, such as physical or sexual abuse, are associated with faster mortality, both from AIDS-related and all causes."Trauma and depression are common among people with HIV, and trauma and depression seem to have an effect on disease progression and mortality in HIV. Given that, it is critical that clinicians treating people infected with HIV recognize depression and trauma as risk factors for poor health outcomes, and thus screen and refer patients for psychological and psychiatric treatment when these

Game I want: Trauma center: New blood
I said yesterday that there were a couple of games I was really looking forward to and wanted and here is one of 'em. I'd been deliberating over whether to buy Trauma center: Second opinion for some time. The fact I still really want this game is probably a sign I should be it. But I'm choosing to hold out for the sequel, which looks to be coming along nicely. Trauma center: Second opinion put me off because it wasn't that much of an upgrade from the DS version (Trauma center: Under the knife) aside from the controls, which were and are still are considered to be a brilliant showcase for the Wii remote. I'm a bit wary of re-releases unless they feature a great deal of enhancements or are complete overhauls such as the Resident evil remake or Metal Gear Solid: The twin Snakes for the GameCube. First blood feels more like the game I think people wanted from Second opinion and I think those who like myself were sat on the fence about buying the first game, will probably buy this one.

Supporting Trauma Survivors – Part II
One of the ways in which we can support trauma survivors is to provide a holding environment for them as they recover. At some point survivors need to make a conscious decision to heal. Initially, all they can do is suffer or run away from the feelings elicited by the trauma. Often they feel as if they are being defined by what has happened to them. The trauma and its aftermath is all-consuming. Over time, however, the other parts of their lives begin to clamor for attention, and survivors are in a place to contemplate moving through the trauma into healing. They can decide whether they’re going to be defined by their trauma or whether they’re going to allow this to become part of their history and then create a different definition of who they are. But I think that takes a conscious choice. Someone has to decide, “I want to learn how to live again and not just exist.”

One of the best ways to support people going through a traumatic experience is to tune into being in the same space with them. We need to work very hard to take out own biases out the picture and just be willing to listen to where someone is coming from; not make assumptions about how they are going to be; not project our own stuff onto them. We need to just sit with people. One of the most important gifts we can give someone is the willingness to sit with them in their pain.

      Toilet trauma
I got home this afternoon in the sunshine, happy to have a few hours to relax before an evening event at work. I'm exhausted and planned to spend the afternoon sitting on my couch and eating bon bons. However, as we have all learned by now, there is no rest for the Single Gal: something's wrong with my toilet. It will not stop running.I've studied its interior. I've studied its exterior.I have no fucking idea what's wrong with it.All I can say is that I'm ready to get the hammer out and start wacking things. That'll fix it, I'm sure.I turned off the water.I consulted Toiletology 101 -- which made me want to vomit in said running toilet. And then various DIY websites. Nothing addressed my unique toilet issue -- it's clearly not a simple problem.Unfortunately, I cannot consult the mechanical know-how I absorbed while living in Iowa. I learned nothing about fixing nothing.I do, however, know that there are 4 times as many pigs as people living in the state. A fact all should know,

A summer story or how girlfriend developed the "is the door locked ?" trauma...
As autumn already strikes in the north of Germany let me share one of my favorite summer stories. In June 2005 girlfriend and I went on holidays to Agistri. A tiny Greek island, just about one hour by boat from Athens. This tiny island had its 15 minutes of fame when in 2003 a wanted Greek terrorist surrendered himself after three months' hiding on the island. My personal opinion is that probably he was just bored stiff and his hideaway close to a muddy lagoon smelled hideously. What made Agistri (means "hook" in Greek) a perfect holiday resort for us was the total absence of sights to see. We found a cute, cheap hotel and gave in to total relax. One day we rented a Vespa took a look at the smelly lagoon and one day we made a boat trip to the neighboring island of Aegina to visit the shrine of Saint Nectarios. At that time girlfriend and I were still conductiong a nerve-wrecking long-distance relationship (me: Germany, she: Greece) and saw each other only every three months for a few da

Treatment of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
The primary treatment for those volunteers who are experiencing vicarious traumatization is to temporarily have them refrain from the volunteer activities that precipitated the condition. It may be very difficult to help volunteers acknowledge that they are experiencing vicarious traumatization, but it’s essential that their supervisor and/or colleagues help them recognize what’s going on. If they continue to volunteer, their effectiveness will likely be compromised as will their future ability to help. Burnout is the inevitable outcome of unrelieved vicarious traumatization. Once volunteers have reached that point, they will be unable to be helpful and they greatly increase the risk to themselves of physical and/or emotional disorders. If vicarious traumatization is caught early, a brief break involving rest and recreation may be all that’s needed. If it has been allowed to progress, a longer period of recovery will likely be needed. During that time it will be impor

      Emotional & Psychological Trauma:
Trauma. The word brings to mind the effects of such major events as war, rape, kidnapping, abuse, torture, or other similar assault. The emotional aftermath of such events, recognized by the medical and psychological communities, and increasingly by the general public, is known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Now there is a new field of investigation that is less familiar, even to professionals: emotional or psychological trauma.Recent research has revealed that emotional trauma can result from such common occurrences as an auto accident, the breakup of a significant relationship, a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience, the discovery of a life-threatening illness or disabling condition, or other similar situations. Traumatizing events can take a serious emotional toll on those involved, even if the event did not cause physical damage.Regardless of its source, an emotional trauma contains three common elements:it was unexpected;the person was unprepared;and there was

Disasters & Trauma & Your Mental Health
Disasters and trauma are an unfortunate part of life. Every person is affected differently by a trauma, but none the less, disasters ultimately will have some sort of impact on just about everyone. Different factors determine how a disaster or trauma will affect one's mental health. Broaching the subject of "mental health" still carries a stigma for some, but there is nothing to be embarrassed about. Realizing what normal feelings and reactions may result from a trauma is the first step in determining if one needs professional help. What exactly constitutes a "disaster" or a "trauma"? That truly depends on the person. However, the following is a list of such known occurrences: –Various accidents –Physical, emotional or sexual abuse –Neglect –War experience –Alcoholism –Illness, surgery or disability –The death of a family member of friend –A natural disaster Obviously, this list is in no way conclusive,

Prevention of Vicarious Trauma in Volunteers
Vicarious traumatization may be prevented by ensuring that volunteers have adequate training and ongoing supervision. Knowing ahead of time what to expect can help volunteers develop coping strategies before coming face-to-face with difficult situations. Being told that emotional reactions are to be expected and are normal can go a long way toward freeing up the volunteers to acknowledge what they are feeling and ask for help. If the volunteers are aware of the potential for developing vicarious traumatization and are educated about the signs and symptoms, they will be more likely to be willing to take a break from their volunteer activities to allow time for decompression and rest. The supervisors of volunteers have a huge responsibility for screening, training, and providing support on an ongoing basis. Regular group and/or individual meetings between the volunteers and their supervisors can provide for debriefings and evaluation of the volunteers’ state of emotional st

Thanks for the Memories, the Heartache, and the Trauma
Former Broken Springs Police Chief James Earl Kingston was recently honored for his 30 plus years of disservice to the community of Broken Springs. Nine friends and 32 relatives met at the Divided Unitarian Church to pay tribute to Broken Springs’s longest serving top cop, who was recently canned by the Township Board for being an inadequate piece of horse manure. The former Chief received many cards, gifts, handshakes, and pinches on the butt from the sitting room only crowd last Wednesday night.Shockingly we at NFBS were not invited to this prestigious event. Apparently the Broken Springs Post Office lost our invitation in the mail, an unfortunate error that will not be forgotten during the Christmas tip season. We’re sure the Kingston Klan regrets the error, and their letter of apology has also unfortunately suffered the same un-received fate as the original invite. We’re sure our presence (and presents) were sorely missed. Despite the mistake, we will report the highlights of

      Vicarious Trauma and Volunteers
People who volunteer their time and talents to work with those who have experienced pain and loss may develop a traumatic response to what they have seen and heard. Called “vicarious traumatization” or “compassion fatigue,” the constellation of symptoms can include intrusive images and thoughts, hypervigilance, fear, numbing, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and depression. Some of the very qualities that motivate people to become volunteers may be the qualities that make it difficult for them to pace themselves or even allow themselves to recognize that they are becoming traumatized. A desire to help others can lead people to ignore physical fatigue or emotional exhaustion. Observing and hearing about the atrocities that exist in the world can lead to a spiritual crisis, a questioning of the world view that one had prior to becoming aware first-hand of the tragedies that some people experience. Some people may try to deal with these symptoms in unhealthy ways, s

Author: Stephen J. Morewitz Paperback: 150 pagesPublisher: Springer; 1 edition (December 31, 2002)Language: EnglishISBN: 0306473658Stalking and Violence: New Patterns of Obsession and Trauma provides new perspectives on the prevalence, causes, and effects of stalking in intimate and non-intimate relations. Drawing on the results of a large random survey of restraining orders, this book found that stalking is highly prevalent in a variety of relationships and is a pattern of behaviors that is routinely regulated by the demographic and social characteristics of the victims and offenders. This book demonstrates that it is possible to develop reliable stalker profiles to help better detect and respond to the threat of stalking. These findings differ from previous studies that considered stalking limited to severely disturbed persons. Covering a wide range of topics from offender profiling, the dangers of stalking, cyberstalking, traumatic health effects, and the responses of the polic

      Shopping Trauma
Shopping traumaGirls, did you know that shopping could be classified as a dangerous activity? It had been a pretty long time I hadn’t been shopping (not a week! but like about 2 months) so I grabbed some extra pounds I had been able to save and took the afternoon to go around shops. After about 4 or 5 shops I found a beautiful vest in an old fashion store. It was a little pricy but gorgeous. I tried it on and then one of the gentlemen working there came to “give me advice”. I personally hate when they come and stand next to you, talking you through to make you buy whatever you try on telling you you’re fabulous. I pretty much ignored him as I usual do and I was really hesitating on whether or not I should take it. I decided to leave and come back later after giving it a thought. I indeed came back, wanted to try it a last time before buying it, and as I was changing in one of the rooms the same guy drew the curtain open going “So you like it, eh?” I started to feel uncomfor

Pacifier Separation - A Major Trauma of Toddlerhood
Some people love them. Some people hate them. Most are floating around somewhere in between. As for my family, we are familiar with all the arguments for and against. In our situation, and especially with Alex needing extra comfort during his hospitilizations, we decided to use one. Who are we kidding, when he was in the hospital I could have seriously used one. At his age now though, I am trying to begin weaning him off it, especially since lately he seems more inclined to look for it, or carry it around with him. Now the big issue is how to actually accomplish the separation itself. I scrounged around and hit up some friends for ideas on what worked for them. I also waded through the piles and PILES of tips across the internet on this topic. So if you’re looking for a way to make the break as cleanly and painlessly as possible, try some of these tips: 1. It’s broken. My friends John and Robin gave me this idea. When their son was smaller and not wanting to gi

Easements — public use or public trauma?
Anxiety?  Check.  Fear?  Check.  Helplessness?  Check.  These are the emotions around our house.  I have written before (on my Seattle P.I. blog) on the upcoming renovations in our neighborhood to add walking and biking paths to the elementary school.  Drawings have been drafted, PowerPoints have been used, and meetings have been held.  The scary part for us is the possibility that the City will use all its public use easement across the entire front of our property putting in a winding, paved path adjacent to the road.  Why, that sounds nice, you say.  A winding path in front of your house where currently there exists a man-eating ditch, snagging crushed Big Gulps and bags of Fritos (hey, not mine, I use the trash cans!).  It would be great, but for the Fence Project.  You see, if a path goes in and a proper retaining wall is not included, the ground on which our beautiful, painstakingly made Fence will give way.  Picture Malibu in rainy season.  The Fence isÂ

Felt much better though; I had more energy, open eyes and a brain that wasn't running on pulse battery power.Lesson learnt.A funny incident happened today at the day job. I went to the loo just after lunch and walked into one of the cubicles (there are only two). I sat down on the throne to take care of business and luckily, at the last minute, noticed there was no toilet paper.I hoisted up the tweeds and went into the other cubicle, sat down and began my evacuation once more. Teenage Trauma
YESTERDAY I battled through the crowds in my lunch hour to try to do some Christmas shopping. It was a bit of a cop-out as I bought gift tokens for the teenage members of my family. But what can you buy a teenager that won’t necessitate a sharp dig in their ribs and a hissed and brittle "say thank you to Auntie” from their mum?Not that any of the teenagers in my family resemble Harry Enfield’s monstrous creations Kevin and Perry. They are all perfectly pleasant kids who treat this aunt with bemused tolerance... but their tastes change faster than Johnny Vegas downs a pint.It seems like only yesterday I was buying building blocks and outfits for Barbie. Now I don't know from one day to the next what's "coo-el" and what isn't. I try to engage them in conversation about a band that yesterday was "totally wicked". Today, any mention of the band's name and eyes roll back into heads as if you had suggested they might quite like to listen to your T'Pau Greatest Hits CD.Last month N

For many female vets, PTSD tied to sex trauma
Jane Salodof MacNeil (Southwest Bureau) ALBUQUERQUE - Sexual trauma is the primary cause of posttraumatic stress disorder in female veterans, according to a psychologist who provides care at a trauma clinic for female veterans in New Mexico. Diane T. Castillo, Ph.D., estimates that 80%-90% of female veterans who walk into the Women's Trauma Clinic with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) had suffered sexual trauma before, during, and/or after their military service. Most PTSD in male veterans is entirely combat related, but that is the case for only about 8% of cases in female veterans, she says. She calculates that about 70% of female PTSD patients have only sexual traumas but adds that some women veterans have suffered sexual and combat traumas. More... © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Child Abuse, Trauma and Mental Illness
UPDATE: Click Here. Today, perusing the various RSS news I get daily, I tripped over this article, in ScienceDaily. A search of the University of Manchester web site produced no mention of this work. A Google search found the apparent original source, a press release by the U of M. The article is a particularly disturbing example of the press distributing prepublication reports of results before the academic community has an opportunity to review the study. Even a simultaneous release of what appears to be a literature review would be better. Paul Hammersley, a nurse researcher at the U of M, makes some rather surprising assertions. It appears that the intent of this press release is publicity seeking by the U of M, perhaps in search of research funds. Here is the excerpt: EurekAlert University of Manchester researcher Paul Hammersley is to tell two international conferences, in London and Madrid on 14 June 2006, that child abuse can cause schizophrenia. Individuals with prolonged reactions that disrupt their daily functioning should consult with a trained and experienced mental health professional.
