It’s important to remember that your clients’ reactions to a trauma can be
short, or it can be long-lived. Regardless of their reaction time, it’s
important to remember most of them will react.
Keep in mind how your clients respond to trauma depends on a few things:
• How severe was the trauma?
• How long did the trauma last?
• How strong (physically and/or emotionally) were they before the traumatic
event?
Your clients’ answers to these questions will help you determine how they
will respond to a traumatic event.
Remember, your clients can have both physical and emotional reactions to
trauma. Some of the more common emotional reactions clients tend to exhibit
include:
We all experience stress…but sometimes your clients may need a little help
from you to learn how to manage their stress – particularly when trauma is
involved.
As therapists and first responders, it’s important we remind our clients that
stress is a part of life – and not all stress is bad stress. Explain to your
client sometimes, stress can even be good for them. How? Because it can motivate
them. Oftentimes, the stress our clients feel from a deadline they have to meet
motivates them to get the task done.
But it’s also important we make them aware that too much stress can actually
be harmful. At least once a week the evening news runs a story about how stress
can cause heart attacks, or how it can weaken your immune system and make you
more susceptible to getting sick.
As therapists and first responders, we’re all familiar with the term
“trauma”, but how many of us really know what trauma is and how trauma can
affect our clients’ bodies and lives?
The basic definition of trauma is a “shock to the body and/or emotions”.
Based on that definition, most of us can probably say we have clients who have
experienced trauma at least once in their lives. Life is tough. We need to help
our clients understand that oftentimes they have no control over trauma entering
their lives…and rarely have time to prepare.
If your clients suddenly find themselves thrown into a traumatic event, it’s
important to make sure they know how it can affect them – both physically and
emotionally.

Today was one of those momentous days that rolls around every year at about this time - Santa photo time!
Every year thousands of screaming toddlers and babies are dragged by their parents down to the local shopping centre and sat on some elderly stranger’s knee to be photographed. Today it was the turn of our toddler and baby, Little Miss and Usurper.
Of course Wife being Wife the local shopping centre Santa wasn’t up to scratch, something to do with his belly not being round and firm enough, or his ‘HO HO HO’ not quite being jolly enough, or some such thing, so the whole tribe had to go for a 45 minute drive to the shopping centre near the in-laws.
The Santa there was firm of belly, fluffy of whisker, with a lovely baritone laugh and just the right twinkle in his eye - more to Wifes liking when it comes to shopping centre Santa’s to be part of our Christmas photo tradition.

Today was a very bad day! I think I knew something was up, but it was too late.....Mom grabbed me and put me in my cat carrier, and put me in the car. I started hyperventilating, crying, and shrieking really loud, and if you heard it, you would not have believed such loud sounds could come out of such a small Jelly Bean! We were off to the vet's office.At first I waited in my box in that little room, waiting for Dr. Staph. I was shaking so hard that my Mom took me out of the box and held me while we waited some more. Then a girl came in and told mom that she would weigh me and take my temperature.....yeah, I knew what that meant.....I'd get a cold thermometer up my butt.......not a good feeling, let me tell you! After I came back from that ordeal, I decided to hide my face as hard as I could in mom's arms, so maybe nobody could find me! But, it did not work.
