American and European government officials must still approve the merger plan.The new group, to be called NYSE Euronext, will have a combined market value of about twenty-seven billion dollars. The deal has been developing since June.The New York Stock Exchange is the world's biggest stock market. Euronext is Europe's leading international exchange. It operates the stock markets in Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon and Paris. Germany's Deutsche Borse withdrew its own offer for Euronext in November.Financial markets have grown increasingly international and competitive. The planned merger of Euronext and the NYSE Group is a good example of this new climate.Euronext is itself the product of mergers.

A record number of cruise ships will cross the Tasman Sea this summer, and last-minute buyers may find bargains over the next few weeks. Between November and March, at least seven liners will between them sail about 40 times between Sydney and Auckland via Melbourne, Tasmania and five or six ports in New Zealand on cruises of 12 to 15 nights.The ships have a total capacity of more than 11,000 berths, led by Sapphire Princess (Princess Cruises) with 2670 and first-time visitor Rhapsody of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Cruises) with 2435. INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 17 — The deep-fried Combo Plate may be a little more healthful this year at the Great Indiana State Fair. So say the fair’s leaders, who, taking a step rarely seen in the realm of corn dogs and fried pickles, have banned oils with trans fats from all the fryers that line the grounds here Jeremy Orme's stand is the home of the Combo Plate: a Snickers, two Oreos and a Reese's, all battered and deep-fried. The change is only the latest in a string of bans on artificial trans fats. Tied to health problems including heart disease, they have been banished by national restaurant chains, snack brands and New York City, which forbids restaurants to use them in food preparation. This is a good decision by the state fair, and we should applaud private entities that act in ways that benefit people. Public institutions like the city government of New York should err towards freedom and ban only those things which present a clear and present danger, however.

It sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen. Deep-fried Oreos, Twinkies, corn dogs, funnel cakes, french fries -- all dripping tasty, greasy oils. Thousands indulge themselves every year at state fairs across the USA and eat fried trans-fat treats. Beginning this year, however, one major state fair is formally banning artery-clogging trans fats, and some vendors at other fairs are volunteering to do so. ABC News August 15, 2007

Everybody knows that eating a lot of fat -- the wrong kind of fat -- can cause a heart attack. That's the bad news. Now here's the worse news: researchers from the University of Alberta have discovered foods rich in trans and saturated fats can also botch up the electricity in your heart, worsening the severity of heart attacks and increasing the risk of death.
