I talked before about my tipping point for financial change and my tipping point for financial success, but it seems that the US as a nation has finally hit its tipping point at $4.00 a gallon.
To recap, a tipping point is “the level at which the momentum for change becomes unstoppable.“[1]

Industry figures have shown that the number of new mortgage applications approved by the major banks fell again in December. British Bankers Association (BBA) members approved 42,088 new mortgage loans last month, the lowest figure that has been seen since 1997 when the data started to be collected.
What is your tipping point? If you're like us, you'll be staring at the strange, colorful denominations in your palm, unsure what you should be giving the driver, porter, waiter, hairdresser, barista, police officer as they smile patiently. Tipping etiquette varies across cultures, generations, locations, and occupations. In North America it's become so ubiquitous, pretty soon they'll have "tip j
State-owned Northern Rock is set to offer great deals for savers in the coming months, however it is the banks existing 800,000 mortgage customers who are the bone of contention. The main cause of Northern Rocks swift demise was the home loans offered by the bank, it has been suggested that the bank has too many mortgage holders which needs to be drastically reduced to turn the bank around and get
House repossessions have soared from the beginning of 2008, people who are hit hardest by these repossessions are borrowers who have borrowed more than they can afford against their property. Other causes that have emerged are fraudulent activity by property developers.
In all asymmetric wars there comes a time when the tide definitely turns against one side or the other. History, or the gods of Mount Olympus, get tired of the game and decide to pick a winner.Military experts call it the tipping point. This does not mean that all fighting suddenly comes to a halt. Nor does it mean that the loser would necessarily throw in the towel. What it means is that after t

I wrote earlier about the moment/idea that marked that turned around our financial journey. Today, I wanted to talk about the moment when the momentum for positive change became unstoppable.

Ah summer time and the living is easy.. Except when it comes to tipping ... it becomes a "who's on first"? situation..Sometimes I'm still not sure whom to tip. Should I tip the guy who lubes my rig ? Should I tip the UPS guy who delivers parcels to me? To be absolutely certain I’m not offending anyone, perhaps I should start tipping everyone who does anything for me, even my mother. "Thanks f

The recent real estate bubble bursting indicates a tipping point, or more to the point, two tipping points -- the point where speculation ran epidemic-like through the market; and the tipping point when sub-prime adjustable rate mortgages started coming due and burst the bubble, starting the epidemic we are experiencing now.
Are you a generous tipper or do you give the minimum tip possible? Do you tip extra for good service or not at all for bad service? Well, everyone has their own tipping philosophy and it does vary by where you live, your background and expectations. It’s been a struggle trying to figure out how to protect the cows that took to the streets of San José back in March. When they first arrived, they were free to roam. But, as people flocked to the downtown area to see and photograph the cows, some also came to pet, ride, and even vandalize these urban pieces of art. Just days into the Cow Parade, artists gathered to make repairs. (See video bel

Having grown up in Australia and now living in America, it is always interesting to note the subtle difference in cultures between the two countries. One clear example is when it comes to "tipping". This is how a tip is defined : "A small monetary amount left to show appreciation for a service rendered above the norm". In America the standard tip is 15-20% of the bill, In Australia it is normally 1-!0%. The reason for the difference in tipping standards between America and most countries is due to the fact that American workers in the services sector are paid close to minimum wage (around $A7 per hour), whereas in other countries the minimum wage is much higher (In Australia it is about $A14). So the low minimum wage in America is justification for the large
Don’t ask. The answer is a resounding "Yes"! You should tip. When you go on a chartered and chaperoned dive through a commercial diving shop, it is customary to tip both the Captain and the DiveMaster. Gratuities are voluntary, incumbent on your generosity. Even so, it is appropriate to offer a tip for your scuba crew. If you are going out for one day, it is important to bring some cash on the boat for tipping. If you are diving with the same DiveMaster and Captain for an entire week, it is acceptable to offer a tip at the end of the week. If you are arranging a variety of dives through a dive shop, you may not have the same Captain or DiveMaster on each dive, so daily tipping is a better idea unless you are certain that your crew will be consistent for the entire duration of your stay.

You know the rules: environmentalists and concerned “green” citizens on one side, business on the other. The green lobby shouts and screams about the threats of climate change, and the business lobby ignores them or reacts with “reality” statements, excuses and a lack of general acceptance.
It seems these rules don’t work anymore, and the past month may have been the tipping point. If you don’t think so, just ask Tony Juniper of the NGO Friends of the Earth.
In mid-November the Nobel Peace Prize co-winners, the Interplanetary Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the latest report (AR4). A Report that concluded - yet again - that Climate Change is here, very much here and now, and it was time to stop dicking about.
Two weeks ago the UN released its annual development report. Once again, Climate Change is here, very much here and now, and it’s time to stop dicking about… from a global security perspective.

The difference between a good tip and a great one costs little but means a lot to the recipient (as any former waitress knows). If you're deciding between money and a present, research shows that most personal trainers prefer cash, but presents are always welcome.
During the holidays, you tip the people who perform services for you year-round, who are there for you when you need them and whom you have a valuable relationship with. Hopefully you have a valuable relationship with your personal trainer.
And, tips vary for trainers... a lot of which depends on your relationship with them. For instance, you don't have to give as much to a new personal trainer because you haven't forged a relationship with them yet.
The average tip: One hours session.
The most generous tip I've seen at one of my husbands facilities: One family (you know who you are) gave a trainer a tip of $4,000 to pay off the last of her student loans! - It was an amazing act of generosity.

(ver videos)

Dejavu: Earlier this month, Mrs. Clinton mishandled a solo breakfast stop while visiting an upstate diner to promote her candidacy for the United States Senate. She accepted a free meal from the owner and neglected to tip the waitress, prompting her opponent, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, to needle her by leaving his next waitress $60 for a $35 bill.
Quem assina é a AMV BBDO.

The issue of whether SaaS is truly a core disruptive technology and business services phenomenon is no longer in doubt. SaaS is now a basic fact of life in IT and in business. Already, SaaS has moved from simple to sophisticated – and from a departmental adjunct, to becoming a fundamental part of business and IT infrastructure & operations. SOA, Open Source, Collaboration, Mobility, Mash-ups and Web 2.0 are now converging on SaaS platforms, providing rich, configurable applications and business value.
While the pace of growth and change has been fast, longer-term success with SaaS will require that both users and vendors rethink how business software deployment strategies and architectures will evolve so as to fully understand the impacts of this new delivery and licensing approach. This is one of the important conclusions of Saugatuck Technology’s research report published earlier this year, “Three Waves of Change: SaaS Beyond the Tipping Point”.
Saugatuck Technology, a

Tipping, the practice of giving someone extra money for service, has existed for centuries. We tip for various reasons: good service in the future, super service, and unusual service, like a singing waiter. You may have tipped someone because they were funny.
But most of us tip to compensate for low wages. Tipping has gotten confusing in the last few years. The question is, “Why?”
There are more people to tip. According to a “Forbes” article on the MSNBC Web site, we used to be looked after by a few service people. Today we are looked after by many. “Now there are pool attendants and ski concierges, personal shoppers and fitness coaches, not to mention butlers galore,” according to the site.
Tipping rates vary. As the howstuffworks Web site explains, the practice “varies not only from country to country but from city to city.” You know this if you’re a frequent traveler. Tipping rates have increased almost everywhere. Dar
While in conversation with one of my friends the other night regarding jobs, we touched upon the subject of tipping in the workplace and our conflicting attitudes towards it. My friend was of the opinion that if he provided good service to the customer at the bar, he deserves a tip, simple as that, and that is he didn’t the customer was “rude”.My own opinion is that tipping is a complete load of nonsense and a totally unfair practice. My first major qualm with tipping is that it is almost completely industry specific, if you work in the bar or hotel industry, it seems quite acceptable to expect a tip and be rather peeved off about it if you weren’t to get one. However, if you provide great service in another area of business/life you don’t get a tip…because you just don’t. An example that I have witnessed recently springs to mind, in a supermarket where I used to work, a sales assistant brought a rather confused lady around the shop and helped her with her shopping upon r
I would like to take this time to reflect on something that has popped up a lot over the last week of our vacation: tipping. It's everywhere. I want to know what you think about tipping. How did it start? Why does it continue?I don't really get it. Aren't people getting paid? Why should I pay them more? Because I thought they did a good job? Shouldn't they do a good job because it's their job?! I understand that a lot of jobs don't pay very well, and that a lot of waitresses and stuff like that make much of their living from tips. But then, why don't you just charge me a little more for the service so you can pay your employees more, instead of involving me in this intricate game of how to tip, when to tip, and how much!?So I mentioned I got my nose pierced the other day. They guy who did it was very nice, and very clean, and did a good job, so thumbs up. But all over his parlor there were signs about tipping--tip me! tip me!!! But um...they guy owned the place. Doesn't he get

I am actually very pleasantly surprised to see a piece in the LA Times that speaks positively of what our troops are accomplishing in Iraq. In spite of the Democrats best efforts at snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory the Surge would seem to be working. ~RJHLA Times story link 'Tipping point' seenTogether with the 4,500 police officers recruited in Ramadi since last May, the members of the Provincial Security Force, or PSF, have helped effect an improvement in security that has seen attacks on U.S. forces plummet and a surge in discoveries of insurgents' weapons and munitions caches. U.S. military officers now talk of a "tipping point" in the three-year battle in Ramadi that has left much of this city in ruins.A lead collected by Sahed's crew recently was a case in point. After an attack on a coalition Humvee cost a GI his legs, the group fanned out in Al Tash. The tip soon led them to a "stranger" who had a 155-millimeter artillery shell in his house a

In a Perspective in the April 12, 2007 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and the Association of European Cancer Leagues describe the growing momentum for indoor smoking bans in countries across the globe. They identify Ireland’s pioneering 2004 comprehensive indoor smoking ban as a likely tipping point for fundamental change in social norms and public health worldwide.
Since 2004, in only a few years, more than a dozen other countries have also adopted national indoor smoke-free policies that are being implemented or will be implemented in the near future.
Lead author Dr. Howard Koh, Professor and Associate Dean of Public Health Practice at HSPH said: “The 21st century is witnessing a paradigm shift, once considered impossible, whereby entire countries are declaring themselves smoke-free in indoor public places. Such mounting progress across the globe is making smoking history worldwide.”

Read, listen or watch what Julia Whitty has to say about tipping points. If you do one, you will probably do all three, because Julia is good.In nature there are 12 known tipping points that will be triggered when the heat comes on and cause a catastrophic domino brick effect. When the last brick has fallen, well I really don't know, but I imagine that our world will be a very hellish place indeed. To stop this from happening we need to trigger the thirteenth tipping point: the shift from collective passiveness to collective responsiveness.READLISTENWATCHIf you find this important use the send button below.

Why did crime in New York drop so suddenly in the mid–90s? How does an unknown novelist end up a bestselling author? Why is teenage smoking out of control, when everyone knows smoking kills? What makes TV shows like Sesame Street so good at teaching kids how to read? Why did Paul Revere succeed with his famous warning? In this brilliant and groundbreaking book, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Ideas, behavior, messages, and products, he argues, often spread like outbreaks of infectious disease. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a few fare–beaters and graffiti artists fuel a subway crime wave, or a satisfied customer fill the empty tables of a new restaurant. These are social epidemics, and the moment when they take off, when they reach their critical mass, is the Tipping Point.A must read for followers of buzz marketing
This weekend, I received this comment on my blog. Just scroll down to the very bottom and look for a user named “HazyJay”. The comment reads as follows (I edited the comment for grammatical purposes):
“One of the industry magazines did do a study on tipping. On average, blacks tip 13%. Whites tip 16.5%. While some of it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy (as in black people don’t tip well, so I will not give them good service) the majority of it is that 63% of black people surveyed were not aware of societal tipping rules as compared to only 30% of whites. Furthermore, after 16 yrs in the biz, I have found tipping is more of a class thing rather than a race thing. Poor people do not tip as well as rich/middle class people (although the rich will find more reasons not to tip) for good service and in this country there is a disproportionate percentage of the poor that are black.”
In short, I think it does a good job of explaining and defending why certain classes
After their brilliant derailing of the Sweet Chariot in a game which passed off without incident, Ireland head to Murrayfield this weekend in search of a second Triple Crown in as many years. In some way, it may make up for yet another Grand Slam less campaign. But the sad fact still remains; Ireland have not won this competition since 1985.So in the absence of our regular tipping poster, who is In Fact, Ah falling down the slopes of the Alps, (he maintains it's skiing he's doing)I'm taking the reins for a week. Can you please leave your predictions for Match Weekend Four of the In Fact, Ah Six Nations Tipping Competition in the comments?!
The Republicans are falling all over themselves trying to figure out how to deal with their latest scandal.
But reading the front-page headlines and watching the breathless TV coverage five weeks before the election, one could glibly assume that the fallout from the Foley frenzy will be the tipping point that will produce a Democratic sweep in the House. Especially seeing the Republicans in full meltdown, vacillating between fetal-position defeatism and a desperate effort to find a scapegoat.
Really? This is the tipping point? What about all the things the American people now know about Bush and the the Republican congress that allowed all of this? What about...
...the National Intelligence Estimate tells us that the invasion of Iraq has created a greater worldwide terrorist threat, making us less safe.
...and Bob Woodward's 60 Minutes interview and new book, State of Denial that each outline a "ruinous mix of arrogance and naiveté" within the Bush administration - the dire

I was looking forward to reading books by Malcolm Gladwell and finally got my hands on The Tipping Point. It is not a very big book and I managed to finish it in three days, reading only in my free time. Most of you might be aware that The Tipping Point is popular bestseller and a highly appreciated book. I am glad I was able
I was invited to join the Investec Tipping Challenge today. What a cool idea. Join a pool, make some predictions and see how you can beat in your pool.
Unfortunately for those who do not like to watch rugby, this is a rugby pool. It's free, it's easy and it's highly addictive. So if you and your mates smaak some lekker Rugby then check out this Investec Tipping Challenge.
The general malaise persists still since last weekend. I just hope a pitcure like the above is now branded on the players' psyche until September 21st.Lets hope the provinces can put in good performances tonight to help nudge the mood forward. The great hope of Irish propping, Darragh Hurely gets a start for Munster tonight, while Leinster have a very exciting side out also for somewhat of a grudge match against their arch nemisis Edinburgh who inflicted a humbling defeat on the Irish province earlier this year in the Heineken cup. Here are the cumulative totals after Match Weekend 2 of the In Fact, Ah Six Nations Tipping Competition [Lower Score is Better].Tom 78Dae 97Incognito 101Murray 120Barabus 121Egardoo 122Da Rossie 125Francie 127Jap 137PMC 139The Salmon Of Knowledge 146Colm 148Gib 167The Slippery Orange Ballcock 176Cahony 178Bull 182Lorenzo 217Don't forget to return next Thursday to get your predictions for Match Weekend 3 in.Also, please vote for In Fact, Ah in the Irish Blog
In honour of the CIAS, we interrupt our regularly scheduled questions. Enjoy.Dear Useless Men,What does fuel economy really mean and how do I know a car has it? Is a small car automatically better for fuel economy?Which kind of cars are more likely to pass the emissions tests as they get older? Will someone eventually ban those freaking big assed trucks and vans that make driving a car of any kind so bloody aggravating? I so want to carry around a huge mallet to slam them out of the way so I can see into the intersection and know if it's safe for me to turn. They block the whole view. I want to start a new big assed truck tipping sport thing. Leave the cows alone.HaterDear Hater,To answer your first question, it's pretty simple. A car has good fuel economy if the car has a tripometer. All you do is fill up your car with gas, reset the tripometer to zero and drive till the fuel light comes on. Seems pretty easy to track your kilometers per liter. Why would a car manufacturer make it s
I think Faz may have someone else on his mind who'll need saving rather than the Queen come Saturday 5:30. I'm sure Messrs D'Arcy and O'Driscoll have a few nice 'Fáilte to Test Rugby' set-pieces up their sleeves. Well, it's almost here. Thankfully. Look at how long we've been waiting for this one!The build up to the game and the furore drummed up over God Save The Queen being played at Croke Park is truly sickening. We can put aside for a moment the fact that the Irish team's chances this tournament have undoubtedly been adversely affected by all the talk surrounding the move to Croke Park, even though that's grating enough for the rugby fans amongst us.The public discourse in the build up to the England game has yet again highlighted that it seems a large minority (I hope it's a minority!) of the public have a long way to go with leaving the unsavoury elements of our past behind almost a decade since a firm template was put in place for achieving re-unification of our isla
I haven't posted twice in one day since 'Construction at the Iceberg'. And that, too, was coincidentally also about drilling at the Iceberg. Anyhow, I sent an email to CP a while ago talking about Tipping the Iceberg. I got a reply back that I thought was kinda hinting towards ...
CNN declares that "compared with March a year earlier, Americans drove an estimated 4.3 percent less-- that's 11 billion fewer miles." The Federal Highway Administration called it "the sharpest yearly drop for any month... since 1942" (when they started keeping records). At the same time, public transportation ridership has hit the highest level in 50 years. The AAA pegs aver
