The factually-challenged Drudge Report, the fountainhead of news for most of the conservative blogosphere, has an absurd headline this morning; "Polar Bears Not at Threat From Global Warming." From the Daily Mail article;Although the town is still accessible only by train or light aircraft, its guesthouses are packed during late summer and autumn, when the vast ice-sheet over the bay melts, forcing around 1,000 bears to lollop around for months on the shore. Lately, however, it is not only polar bear watchers who come flocking. With the clamour over global warming, it has become a magnet for an army of environmentalists and climatologists who have given Churchill an air of impending doom. The Arctic ice-cap is shrinking fast, is their message, and as it disappears, so too will the polar bears. Today, the polar bear population may hover healthily around 25,000 (they live in Russia, Alaska, Greenland, Norway and Canada). Yet, we are repeatedly warned, if the planet continues to ov

In a shocking move that took thousands of well-fed Beamte completely by surprise, German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has actually and even seriously suggested a newly-drafted government plan in which Beamte should be paid according to something he called their “performance” (what they actually do) in the future.
“Huh? What?” asked one dumbfounded representative from the influential German Beamtenbund (Civil Service Employees Association) after he and the rest of the stunned audience realized he had not been joking and stopped chuckling in an abrupt fashion. “Getting paid ‘for what we actually do’? What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
A visibly nervous and heavily perspiring Schäuble then went on to explain that in the future, “a civil servant’s remuneration will be calculated to a much greater degree upon his or her performance, dedication and know-how.” After a few more minutes of awkward silence, another skeptical Beamte raised his hand.
International scientists are concerned about the growing threat of an earthquake or a tsunami in the Indonesian city of Padang, which has 800,000 inhabitants. This port on the west coast of Sumatra, about 400 kms from Singapore and twice that from Jakarta, is located between two lines of high seismic activity: the Great Sumatran fault, on the mainland to the east, and the Sumatra trench, a subduction zone under the ocean, to the west.It is the subduction zone that is of greatest concern: friction undersea between the descending Indo-Australian plate and the Eurasian tectonic plate, which move together at a rate of five to six centimetres (two to three inches) per year, is eventually likely to cause death and destruction in Padang, the scientists warn.A series of earthquakes in recent years -- including one of magnitude 8.2 that struck the town of Bengkulu in September, and one off Aceh that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004 -- show that all the different segments have r

Pinellas school officials were slow to respond after an 11-year-old Muslim girl was harassed, humiliated and last week threatened with death by a boy in her science class, an advocacy group for local Muslims charged Monday.
However, district officials said the staff at Azalea Middle School quickly took appropriate action and that the boy has been disciplined.
The problems started from the beginning of the school year for the St. Petersburg girl, said Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR. Eighth grade students at Azalea taunted her because of her Muslim headscarf, he said. They called her a terrorist and asked if she was hiding any bombs.
The harassment stopped after her parents complained to the school, then a sixth grade boy began to bother her about 10 days ago, punching her in the arms and shoulders and once holding her against wall, his hands around her throat, Bedier said.
On Wednesday, when the boy r

Thanks to the recently established Miao Lin Temple and Martial Arts Training Facility, the balance of power in the age-old conflict between cats and dogs may at last have shifted. In an exclusive interview, Defense Secretary Cuddles stated: “Yes, it may be true that we finally have the edge. Who else but me, threatens people in front of a photographer for The Washington Post? First off, before you add me to the list of black celebrities getting bad press in 2007, let me give you the back story:
This past Saturday, I was at Union Station, taking pictures with a photographer for an article about area bloggers that will be in this Sunday’s Sunday Source section of the newspaper. Prior to the photo shoot, I had a few things on my mind, and felt a little stressed. Plus, I didn’t make it to the barbershop in time, so my line-up was non-existant. It took awhile for me to loosen up and smile naturally, because my mind kept traveling back to things that I had little control over at the moment.
Once I finally got focused on posing for pictures, this skinny guy with a unibrow similar to Bert from Sesamie Street walked over and interrupted things. The man was wearing a red sweatsuit, and had a basketball jersey overtop of it. He looked at me and said “He
A U.S. think-tank said Tuesday funds have been established in the United States and the Netherlands to help pay protection costs for Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Dutch author who faces death threats as a result of her criticism of radical Islam.
You gotta love the custody judge handling Britney Spears and Kevin Federline’s epic battle. He is all up in Britney’s bizness. Britney reportedly made a phone call to Federline as she jumped into her car and started driving down a Los Angeles road. The conversation started off about their custody battle but then Britney screamed,“I’m going to drive off the cliff! It’s going to be your fault that I killed myself.”The judge heard about it (no doubt from Kevin’s attorney) and now wants to know exactly what was said and what drove her to make such an outrageous statment. A source close to Britney said she has been depressed since the judge ordered that she could only have one overnight visit with her children each week. What the hell did she expect? Does she even live in the same universe as the rest of us?
Former Dutch lawmaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who spent the last year at a conservative U.S. think tank, is back in a familiar place: at the center of a firestorm in the parliament she quit.

There is supposed to be a recovery being put into action that is the best that science can provide, we shall see.

In the past two weeks, Petkov has publicly posted information about critical, zero-day bugs in Apple's QuickTime, Microsoft's Windows Media Player and Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF).According to Petkov, who declined to release details about the vulnerability, attackers can use Gmail's filtering feature to exploit the bug. An attack, he said, would start with a victim visiting a malicious website while also still logged into his Gmail account. The malicious site would then perform what Petkov called a "multi-part/form-date POST" - an HTML command that can be used to upload files - to one of the Gmail application programming int
Over-fishing has made Atlantic bluefin tuna a prized delicacy. This comes a century after the fish were scorned in Europe as pet food, according to studies that urges for better international protection. Hear, hear! “Tuna are now like floating goldmines out in the ocean,” says Brian MacKenzie of the Technical University of Denmark.
This article tells the interesting story of the Bluefin Tuna. The way it has been perceived and praised have completely changed over the years. The Bluefin tuna used to teem in the summers in the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea a century ago as part of migrations that could take them 16 000km a year. Now they are rarely seen in our region after a burst of industrial fishing from 1910-1950. Hmm…

The closure of a mathematics summer camp in Şirince, İzmir, Turkey by Turkish authorities has drawn scorn from scientists around the world.Professor Alexandre Borovik, who organized some of the opposition, said “We are shocked to learn that the Summer School of Mathematics initiated by Professor Ali Nesin was shut down by local authorities. We found it surprising that such an esteemed mathematician such as Professor Nesin needs a specific permit each time he wants to teach math, as we saw that one of the reasons for shutting the camp down was the lack of such a permit, especially considering how this contradicts the fact that the summer schools organized every year by Professor Nesin are sponsored by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), Turkish Mathematics Association and many respected Turkish universities.”The school was reopened on 10 August 2007; however, Ali Nesin still faces charges under Turkish criminal code article TCK 263, which reads
