Drudge Denies Polar Bears Threatened by Global Warming
The factually-challenged Drudge Report, the fountainhead of news for most of the conservative blogosphere, has an absurd headline this morning; "Polar Bears Not at Threat From Global Warming." From the Daily Mail article;Although the town is still accessible only by train or light aircraft, its guesthouses are packed during late summer and autumn, when the vast ice-sheet over the bay melts, forcing around 1,000 bears to lollop around for months on the shore. Lately, however, it is not only polar bear watchers who come flocking. With the clamour over global warming, it has become a magnet for an army of environmentalists and climatologists who have given Churchill an air of impending doom. The Arctic ice-cap is shrinking fast, is their message, and as it disappears, so too will the polar bears. Today, the polar bear population may hover healthily around 25,000 (they live in Russia, Alaska, Greenland, Norway and Canada). Yet, we are repeatedly warned, if the planet continues to ov

Muslim group says girl was threatened at school

However, district officials said the staff at Azalea Middle School quickly took appropriate action and that the boy has been disciplined. The problems started from the beginning of the school year for the St. Petersburg girl, said Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, known as CAIR. Eighth grade students at Azalea taunted her because of her Muslim headscarf, he said. They called her a terrorist and asked if she was hiding any bombs. The harassment stopped after her parents complained to the school, then a sixth grade boy began to bother her about 10 days ago, punching her in the arms and shoulders and once holding her against wall, his hands around her throat, Bedier said. Traditional "healers" (witch doctors) in Africa cause nothing but harm, and here's one more thing to chalk up on the list - causing the national bird of Uganda (the gray crowned crane) to face extinction: In the past decade [...] the crane population in Uganda has fallen from 50,000 to 20,000, primarily due to witch doctors—also known as traditional healers—who use the animals in folk medicine and poachers who take the birds from their natural habitat. ... Because cranes mate for life, local people believe marriages and relationships will last longer if people consume the feathers and eggs of the birds, according to a traditional healer who lives near the state of Masaka in southwestern Uganda. He wished to remain anonymous because he feared his business would be shut down by the government. The healers crush the eggs with herbs to sell as a "love potion." Plus, I didn’t make it to the barbershop in time, so my line-up was non-existant. It took awhile for me to loosen up and smile naturally, because my mind kept traveling back to things that I had little control over at the moment. FEATURE-Indonesia's forests threatened by logging, palm oil
It's one of the few countries that still has vast swathes of tropical rainforests left. But conservationists say maybe not for long.Indonesia's rainforests -- especially those on Borneo island -- are being stripped so rapidly because of illegal logging and palm oil plantations for bio-fuels, they could be wiped out altogether within the next 15 years, some environmentalists say."Sixty percent of the protected and conservation areas are already badly damaged due to illegal logging and palm oil plantations," Rully Sumada, a forestry expert with Indonesian environmental group Walhi, told Reuters."The deforestation speed is 2.8 million hectares a year.At this rate, by 2012 the forests in Sumatra, Borneo and Sulawesi will be gone, only the forests in Papua will be left. And if cutting of trees carries on, no forest will be left by 2022." Indonesia has a total forest area of more than 225 million acres (91 million hectares), or about 10 percent of the world's remaining tropical fo

      Oklahoma Atheists Threatened By Christians
Living as an atheist in America is often a lonely experience. However, in many of the more socially conservative areas, we may face far more serious obstacles than loneliness. Identifying ourselves as atheists may bring disdain, even discrimination. Efforts to express our views on religion are frequently met with accusations of intolerance. And then there are the threats of harm to ourselves and our loved ones.We atheists are everywhere. Even in conservative Oklahoma where 95% of the people profess theistic belief, one will find atheists. Sadly, this report by Oklahoma's KFOR NewsChannel 4 indicates that some have been threatened by Christians because of their lack of belief. Is it any wonder that many atheists still do not feel safe to openly admit their atheism? The story profiles Oklahoma atheist, Kim Cole, described as one of a small number of openly atheistic people in the area. Others would agree to be interviewed only if their identity was concealed. Why?"People do have their li

      Threatened Tranquility
Yesterday I picked up Zane from his school at about 4:30 p.m. and headed off to meet Grace at an appointment. Within thirty minutes a massive condo complex under construction about 200 yards away from the school and just two blocks from home caught fire with flames shooting up to 70 feet in the air, which created quite a spectacle in the neighborhood. (Photo by the Las Vegas Review-Journal)It also created a traffic nightmare as streets were closed and more than 10 fire trucks battled the fire throughout the late afternoon into the late night hours to save the CVS Pharmacy (our pharmacy), homes and an elementary school nearby. It was one of the most fierce fires the Las Vegas Valley has seen in quite some time. Who knows what started it. There have been cases of eco-terrorism at construction sites in town, but it could have been just an accident. Time will tell.In other fires news, the idyllic Catalina Island, which is located 26 miles off the Southern California coast, is threatened by

Comments in Opposition to the Proposed Rule to List All Polar Bear as Threatened Submitted by Conservation Force
John J. Jackson, III from Conservation Force sent me the comments that they filed with the USFWS in regards to the listing of the Polar Bear! The following response is very long but it is a must read! We all need to realize how incredibly important this legislation is in regards to our hunting rights and for the conservation of the Polar Bear! The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is not the agency that should become the regulatory arm for greenhouse gases and increased carbon emissions. It is not in the best interest of the Polar Bear and not in the best interest of the American citizens. Please read the following in its entirety!April 5, 2007Supervisor, United States Fish and Wildlife ServiceMarine Mammals Management Office1011 East Tudor Road, MS 341Anchorage, AK 99503Phone: 907-786-3800RE: Comment in Opposition to the Proposed Rule to List All Polar Bear as Threatened, 72 FR 1064 (January 9, 2007)Dear Sir,This is a comment in opposition to the proposed listing of all p

Pittsburgh imam who threatened Hirsi Ali should be charged
During Ayaan Hirsi Ali's visit to the Pittsburgh university, an imam named El-Bayly made a death call against her. From the Pittsburgh Tribune Review (via Jihad Watch and Hot Air):A community debate over religious freedom surfaced in Western Pennsylvania last week when Dutch feminist author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who has lived under the threat of death for denouncing her Muslim upbringing, made an appearance at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.Imam Fouad ElBayly, president of the Johnstown Islamic Center, was among those who objected to Hirsi Ali’s appearance.“She has been identified as one who has defamed the faith. If you come into the faith, you must abide by the laws, and when you decide to defame it deliberately, the sentence is death,” said ElBayly, who came to the U.S. from Egypt in 1976.That, simply put, is a thinly-veiled death threat, and for that, this imam should be charged. This is exactly why she sadly needs bodyguards and other security.See als

Educators say state threatened to cut aid
Needy districts pressed to accept modest increase[New Jersey] School superintendents from Orange, Paterson and other needy districts told lawmakers yesterday they were coerced into accepting inadequate aid for the coming year by state officials who threatened intense audits and potential funding cuts for those seeking more.Of the 31 communities that receive special assistance under the state Supreme Court's Abbott vs. Burke rulings, only seven have sought more than the 3 percent increase offered by the state Department of Education."It's made very clear to us that if you would choose to go for additional funding, the tasks and documentation process would be much more arduous than it would be if you accept the 3 percent," Michael Glascoe, Paterson schools superintendent, told the Legislature's Joint Committee on the Public Schools at a hearing in Trenton yesterday."If you apply for more you run the risk of not even getting the 3 percent," added Trenton Superintendent Rodney Lofton. http://www.azgfd.gov/artman/publish/article_713.shtmlArizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Population Threatened by BLM Management ActionsNews MediaMar 7, 2007By Michael M. GolightlyChairman, Arizona Game and Fish CommissionOne of the nation’s most significant and contiguous desert bighorn sheep habitat is located in the Black Mountains between Kingman, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada. This mountain range supports a significant bighorn sheep population that serves as one of the last remaining source populations for transplant efforts in Arizona and other western states in re-establishing new populations into historic habitats. The habitat within the Black Mountains is being jeopardized because the Bureau of Land Management is proposing continued and expanded livestock grazing in this area without current rangeland evaluations. Instead, the BLM is relying on outdated information to justify expanding livestock grazing into bighorn sheep habitat despite repeated objections by the Arizona Game and

      Scientists threatened for ‘climate denial’
Ah, evidence of what I said here about the politics of global warming.  Scientists who questioned mankind’s impact on climate change have received death threats and claim to have been shunned by the scientific community. They say the debate on global warming has been “hijacked” by a powerful alliance of politicians, scientists and environmentalists who have stifled all questioning about the true environmental impact of carbon dioxide emissions. Timothy Ball, a former climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg in Canada, has received five deaths threats by email since raising concerns about the degree to which man was affecting climate change. advertisement Source: Scientists threatened for ‘climate denial’ | Uk News | News | Telegraph Technorati tags: global warming, politics, money, greed, research, grants, myth, junk science Sponsored By: Images by Mike in WNY Unique and Original Buffalo Themed Gifts

Jews in Yemen are being threatened
WorldNetDaily reports that the Jewish community of Yemen is under threat from Islamic militants, and forced to pay jizyah: JERUSALEM - Many of Yemen's Jews this weekend fled their homes for a hotel after receiving death threats from Islamic militants accusing the country's tiny Jewish community of serving as agents for "global Zionism." The Jews said they feared for their lives. It was disclosed they had been forced to pay special taxes that Islam imposes on Jews and Christians in return for protection and security. About 45 Jews left their village in Sa'ada county in Yemen after Dawoud Yousuf Mousa, one of the heads of the local Jewish community, was warned Jan. 10 if the Jews don't leave within 10 days they would be exposed to killings, abductions and looting. Four masked militants approached Mousa and delivered a letter to him warning the Jewish community had been under Islamic surveillance. "After accurate surveillance over the Jews residing in Al Haid, it has become clear to

Miro's not mad; he's been threatened
After a couple mysterious hints about why he wasn't working or hanging out in the station - I had assumed it was because of his anger with me over Lazlo - he sat me down on the sofas at IKEA and told me the real reason.A week ago a cop at the station had stopped him and controlled him; that is, had asked for his identification. He doesn't have one at the moment. I think, shortly after he came back to Prague it was stolen, off, you guessed it, the night bus.(Control at the station has become persistently harassing, lately. Over the holiday weekend there were probably 50 cops in the station roaming around asking for ID. They even controlled a group of teenage Czech backpackers and fined one of them for not having an občanka. The new fine for not having identification is no longer a steep 1000 Kč but rather a ridiculous and punishing 3000 Kč! I'm frankly surprised that Czechs are sitting down for it given the reminder of Soviet-era police surveillance it invokes. Supposedly, the new
