Indian telco Tata Communications has announced that it has selected WiMAX vendor Telsima to provide WiMAX solutions for a planned nationwide network. The Indian telco will be investing around USD500 million in the project by the end of 2010, and expects 200,000 WiMAX subscribers by March 2009. The project aims to roll out the largest WiMAX network in India, with coverage of 110 cities for the enterprise segment, and 15 for retail with Telsima deploying around 3,000 base stations. The initial phase is to extend wireless broadband internet access, already available in Bangalore since July 2007, to a total of nine cities; Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Cochin, Chandigarh, and Kolkata, rising to 15 by the end of 2008.telegeography.comMobile WiMAX Base Stations
While the STL conference is ongoing, it is striking to see how their very original views are catching on, to say it nicely. I've written about their 'brainstorm' and accompanying report before and stumbled over no less than three institutions who seems to be taking a page or two from STL's Telco 2.0 (TM) views (yes, they trademarked the term): IBM, Accenture and Heavy Reading (a unit of UBM).
STL Partners (who trademarked the Telco 2.0 term), the firm of Simon, Martin, Keith et al, plan to do another brain torturing event in April. I was lucky to get a view of the accompanying report (they will also present some entirely new research). Their concepts are thought-provoking, highly original and totally worthwhile for anybody in the industry, or even with an interest in business models

More than 500 companies have applied for new telco operating licenses in India. AT&T was one those who applied just before the closing bell for applications. If AT&T should get the license, it would set the stage for a battle royale between it and Vodafone for a share of the world's fastest-growing cellular market.AT&T's wireless unit, the former Cingular, is of course already in a death match in the United States with Vodafone because Vodafone owns 40 percent of Verizon Wireless. An extension of that battle to India, where cellular-phone use is growing at an estimated eight million subscribers per month, thus would have the industry worldwide on the edge of its seats.Just to make things even more interesting, Sistema, the owner of Russia's largest wireless carrier, Mobile TeleS

The technology may be different, but how the product gets to the customer really isn't that different. And the actual video service delivered to the customer isn't any different.Unfortunately, for the telco guys, their video service is - at the moment - pretty much like cable service. It's offering linear video channels, video-on-demand and other items such as an IPG and interactive TV. Telco video is even bundled withbroadband and voice, much like cable's triple-play.Telcos may attempt to compete on price, but is that enough? This brings us to the second point. How do telcos think they're going to compete with cable - or even satellite TV - when they're delivering a "me-to" offering? In addition to selling the usual television fare, how about offering more niche and/or ethnic programming than what's currently available from pay-TV incumbents? How about taking a stab at a la carte options? Or expanding family tiers?Telco video services need to think ahead like satellite TV did mor

The Chinese New Year ended yesterday and it ended as 'boring' for me, exactly same during the start. I am stranded in my hostel room, tuning into my I-Pod and reading newspaper. It's really a boring afternoon for me and I browsed through all those funky adverts and the ads of my country's three most popular telco or mobile networks caught me the most. These three are really in a stiff competition in this small country. I personally use both Digi and Maxis because of different groups of friends using different networks.First, let me post all those ads overview I saw on The Star newspaper here first. You guys have seen it before? Well, let me compare them one by one with the effort they put in their ads and their offers to celebrate the very LAST day of Chinese New Year!First of all, the yellow Digi ads. The colour in it really do made the ads stand out. Notice that beside those 7 yellow Chinese dragons, in came two lions with different colours, representing numbers from other telecom
Inspired by Thailand's Shin Corp battle, Indonesian politicians have called for the return of telecommunications giant Indosat from Temasek Holdings.Several Indonesian MPs have reportedly called on their government to follow Thailand's example and try to buy one of the country's telecommunications giants back from Singapore's Temasek Holdings. The afternoon daily Sinar Harapan yesterday quoted Mr Hajriyanto Thohari, the Golkar member on the parliamentary committee on security and international affairs, as saying the government should not hesitate to take over Indosat, the country's second-largest telecoms company."In the global era, it is common and inevitable that foreigners would buy over a business entity. But in the case of Indosat in particular, the government should have taken steps to buy back the shares," he was quoted as saying.
