The Telegraph has published the secrets - discovered by scientists (of course! you see why I love scientists now?) - of rock, paper scissors. Personally, my secret was always the last tip they give - throw the move that would have beaten your opponent’s previous move and it’s stood me in good stead over these long years. But they give you an opening gambit, a chilling story of financial gain and how to use psychological warfare to your ends. Of course, now that you know the secrets, everything will have changed. Gridlock getting you down? Join a new breed of wealthy commuters in Jakarta who are hopping onto helicopter taxis to chop hours off their journey. Operated by PT Air Pacific Utama (APU), a unit of Indonesia's Lippo Group, the Helimousine service costs $1,400 an hour, or about $300 for a seven-minute ride from central Jakarta to the airport aboard a Bell 407 helicopter. "I use the Helimousine to skip traffic jams when I need to be at the airport immediately," Tung Desem Waringin, a renowned life coach and author of a top-selling self-help book, told Reuters on board a Helimousine as it sped above snarled traffic. "It saves a lot of time." Getting around Indonesia's sprawling capital and suburbs, home to some 14 million people, is a time-consuming and often arduous feat given the traffic jams and chaos caused by rising motorcycle and car ownership, as well as heavy flooding during the rainy season.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

Thanks for the raise. The surcharge for taxis based on locations that MP Seng Tan Thong is proposing now. He’s proposing that the surcharges be deployed to locations such as Raffles Place, shopping malls, pubs, etc. Wow. MP Seng is very thoughtful.
Thanks hor. Now I know that I have to pay for midnight charges, morning peak hour charges, weekend peak hour charges, booking charges, CBD charges, and other various charges of different names that I can’t possibly remember.
So, all these charges are supposed to do something? Like make those taxis appear out of thin air? Wow. The surcharges and other what-nots sure can do magic, ya? Did I mention that I spent $18 in the morning during peak hours just to get to work? Oh, I did.
Why not get rid of the charges and save us some headache instead. Just charge us for a boarding fare of $5 and the route charges. That’ll save a lot of calculating what time to take a taxi and where too.
Let’s make the formula less complicated,

タクシーA taxi in Tokyo is rarely more than a wait of a minute or two, and wave of the hand, away. The service is generally good, but can vary wildly, from the driver who knows the city like the back of his (sometimes her) hand, to the no-hoper who drives you in exactly the opposite direction.Tokyo taxis are generally safe - I have never seen an accident involving a taxi - but the seat belts are never in working order. The drivers are generally polite, and fairly honest - although if you don’t know exactly where you’re going you’re likely to get ripped off by being driven round the neighborhood of your destination “looking” for that crucial landmark.Taxis always have advertising inside, some of them are packed with it - nearly all of it seedy. In this picture, the back of the headrest advertises Prison Break II, then, on the back of the seat, from left to right: “you probably have metabolic syndrome” medical scare quackery, then, “never clean the house or do laundry
The previous evening we learnt that our best option for onward travel toward Merzouga - our desired destination for the day - would be by a Grand Taxi du Maroc. Unlike the Petit Taxis - which are the small, brightly coloured Fiats and Peugeots that remain confined to the city limits - the Grand Taxis (usually in the form of a larger, older Mercedes Benz) roam further afield, leap frogging between the nearby towns and cities and, as such, bolster the Moroccan public transportation system to good effect. Vivien and I were very lost. We had walked for about twenty minutes from our hotel to the Forbidden City, but there was no Forbidden City to be seen, and we stood at the street corner, wondering where it was. A lady came up to us. One of the things she was carrying was a big bag of peanuts, and I thought she was going to try to sell us some. Instead, when she opened her mouth, it was to ask us for directions to... I think... the subway. We looked at each other... eh, can't you see we're lost tourists but no, the peanut lady looked at us earnestly for answers. Emergence of hybrid cars is unstoppable, but I didn’t expect that even yellow cabs are going green as Mayor Mike Bloomberg announced a plan that by 2012 all New York taxis be required to be hybrids. Given that New York’s taxi fleet has approximately 13,000 cabs, the move would instantaneously aid to reduce New York City’s crushing air pollution burden. Hybrid vehicles, which have competent emissions control technology, give off very small smog-forming pollutants. As a result, use of hybrid taxis could help New York City lessen air toxic waste considerably. According to the Mayor, “the financial sting associated with operators being required to give out extra cash to purchase the greener vehicles should be defrayed by their associated fuel cost savings. And really, taxi duty in a highly-congested, stop-and-go urban environment like New York is the perfect scenario for a hybrid drive train, where the fuel-saving and emissions-cutting features are going to be maximized.” Well th
Lately I’ve been really irritated that taxis aren’t all hybrid or biodiesel. In our age of high prices at the pump and increased environmental awareness that seems like an easy first step to cutting down on pollution and emissions. A lot of mass transit (trains, buses) are already electric or hybrid, so the next group of gas guzzlers is taxis. I know that it places an economic burden on taxis to change, and I’m not saying make them buy or convert cars right now, but it would be a good idea to require it by a certain deadline, or offer incentives to convert. Doesn’t that seem obvious?
At least New York City is getting on the ball - New York’s mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered that all city taxi cabs must be hybrid by 2012. Gavin Newsom I am looking in your direction…. San Francisco can go hybrid any day now as far as I am concerned (props to Green Cabs already operating in San Francisco).
In a similar vein, I am also irritated about the lack of green c

LONDON - Taxis will now feature digital radio stations broadcast direct to the passenger compartment and wireless access that business users can use through the cab via their own laptops.
KBH Transport Media, the rail and taxi outdoor contractor, has introduced these two new services, giving radio broadcast stations and other brands the opportunity to access people on the move. The service that broadcasts digital radio stations direct to the area of the cab where the passenger sits, regardless of what the driver is listening to, will allow radio stations to be preset within the cab. Passengers will be able to control the volume.
A Wi-Fi facility will give passengers with laptops access to the web as they travel. Brands will be able to buy the landing page that first comes up when users access the network.

I was glad to read that the CCTV camera trial in Sheffield taxis has been successful, (see page 20) because I believe that every cab should be fitted with such equipment and that our trade should be given grants to enable us to do it. I know there is the argument that says what good are the cameras when an incident takes place outside the cab and the cameras can’t pick it up. I don’t accept that opinion because with today’s advances in technology I believe that can be done. What’s more, the cost of the equipment is getting cheaper so it soon won’t be price that can be used as an excuse to dismiss the idea of in-cab CCTV. Sheffield City Council should be congratulated for recognizing that taxi drivers need protection and for giving CCTV cameras the chance to prove they can have a significant impact on crime. Like the Big Ben and the red double-decker buses, London’s black cabs are an inseparable part of the city. So much so that these taxis have attained a legendary stature hardly paralleled anywhere else in the world. Modernization, however, has seen to it that not all the black cabs in greater London remain black; a trendy, streamlined version has now replaced some of the old ones.
Ever since the days of horse drawn carriages, the specifications of London's taxis have been regulated. In 1679, passenger safety concerns resulted in the development of Conditions of Fitness. These requirements, modified as and when necessary, are still strictly enforced by the Public Carriage Office, a division of the Metropolitan Police.
The London taxi which lingers in most people’s memories is the Austin FX-4, which was introduced in 1959 and remained in production until 1997.

The Shanghai Daily reports that cabbies are going to get plastic bags in their cars so that they don’t have to spit outside.
While Shanghai residents have generally heeded the no-spitting plea in the interests of health and manners, many taxi drivers seem to have missed the message, and are continuing to spit out their windows.

A severe shortage of cabs is the reason Canberra’s taxi industry is in shambles, and the automated booking system is not to blame, shadow transport minister Vicki Dunne said today.
Ms Dunne says the government should introduce new taxis that can only operate during high demand periods.

So there we were, in South Africa trying to catch licensed taxis to get around instead of doing the usual South African trick of driving drunk, my experience was pretty interesting.

I've probably already posted this picture a long time ago, it's of a black phase long nose butterfly. While long nose butterflyfish are found in most of the indo-pacific, Hawaii has two species, one of which is endemic (lives here only) and has a longer nose. Occasionally you will see a black phase, which is considered very rare, in Hawaii, mostly in Kona. We do have spots where you can see several of them on a single dive.Back to the topic of the title... gettting around in Kona: I've always recommended getting a rental car when you come here, but there are many people who do want other options, so I'll discuss them here. First thing one needs to know when coming to Kona is - there is no walking to anywhere from the airport. I had someone asking me how long of a walk is it to the Fairmont Orchid from the Aloha terminal last week, and while I'm not exactly sure, it's something in the range of 27-34 miles or so (a longer distance than most people want to roll their luggage). The New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, plans on having all yellow taxis replaced with hybrid cars by 2012. He released his plans today, and I must say I’m well impressed and hope other large cities take note.
The plan is to replace 1000 yellow cabs by 2008, with the rest (13 000 in total) being [...]
Metered cabs are now the norm in Bangkok and they usually present no significant problems for tourists. The rates are very low by international standards and although tipping is not customary, most people round their fare up to the nearest five or ten baht. Cab drivers rarely speak English, but ...
