The Trans Fat Ban - Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup Next?
On July 25, 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger made it official — California would be the first state to ban trans fat. Food providers have been given a year after which the law requires them to replace hydrogenated oils with healthier, naturally occurring oils such as soya, palm, and vegetable oils. The ban was prompted after the [...]

Birch syrup is healthier and fetches a very good price
It's that time of year again: the sap is rising - the sugaring season is upon us.Not here, you say? You were thinking maple, I presume . . . Think again . . . Try birch. Three of the country's 11 birch syrup producers are in BC. And, according to my source, an article in today's Province, a 250ml bottle sells for $22 - when you can get it. Demand far exceeds supply. Here's a reason to be careful what we do with the living trees amidst the dead pines "everyone" seems so keen to take out. And, of course this little value-added enterprise leaves the trees alive and good for another season. As if that's not enough, unlike maple syrup which is largely sucrose, birch syrup is comprised largely of the healthier fructose and glucose. If I've got you thinking, there's lots more in the article

      Showing a flaw - Buckley’s Cough Syrup
Listening to the radio today, I heard a very interesting ad. It began with an irate customer calling a cough syrup company. He complained that the cough syrup tasted horrible - likening it to a public portapotty (does anyone really know what those taste like?) and an old tire. The customer service representative asked - clearly unconcerned - if the customer still had his cough. “Um… No,” he mumbled. The rep warmly thanked him for calling… followed by a voice-over saying, “Buckley’s cough syrup. It tastes awful, and it works.” It’s an interesting approach to selling cough syrup, but it appears to work - because - for one - it gets people talking. “Hey, have you heard that weird cough syrup ad?” But it is also effective in that it increases the believability of Buckley’s more attractive claims. People automatically become suspicious when a company prattles on and on about how wonderful their product is. So when B

Basbousa - Semolina (Sooji) Cake with Rose Syrup
I have made cakes with all-purpose flour all the time, so this time I decided to try something new. While looking for ethnic cake recipes, I came across this one called "Basbousa", which is a typical middle-eastern dessert (mainly Egyptian) with Semolina as a main ingredient. Also, unlike the traditional way of making cakes, this is unique as it uses a sugar syrup topping for a plain cake, which in fact induces the softness, flavor and sweetness to the cake. Also, almonds and lemon juice are an important part of the traditional recipe. I was excited with the idea of making a cake with semolina, or sooji as it is known in India; it sounded healthy and different. The concept of sugar syrup was also fascinating, as I've made a Tres Leches Cake before which uses milk syrup in the same way. As I'm not too huge a fan of lemon flavor in my cakes, I cut down on the lemon juice a little and added Rose essence instead as I thought it would give a nice aroma and a mildly sweet taste that would

Then she got up just about every hour on the hour. J too. At 5:30 while I was calming a sobbing F again J started up. I turned to Brian and muttered, “Your turn.” He kept J occupied, if not exactly calm, until I got F to sleep again and put her into her own crib for the first time all night. I then fetched J who was sobbing and reaching his arms out towards me and brought him into bed too. He nursed for a while and then I asked if he was ready to go back to his own bed. Sugar Water (Syrup)
In the recipes and directions it will be seen that the sugar and water are  added to the mixtures as a syrup. Make sure the sugar has dissolved  before the water comes to the boil. And so that mistakes do not occur,  label the jar so that you know how much sugar has to be added at each  stage. There is no need to be exact when adding ‘one third’ or whatever  the direction happens to be, but it is a good plan to have the total amount  of sugar to be used at the outset put aside; in this way, when all has been  added you will know there is no more to go in and you will not be left  wondering if you have used as much as you should have done.

In a laboratory study of commonly consumed carbonated beverages, the scientists found that drinks containing the syrup had high levels of reactive compounds that have been shown by others to have the potential to trigger cell and tissue damage that could cause the disease, which is at epidemic levels. They reported here today at the 234th national meeting of the American Chemical Society. Eurekalert August 23, 2007

The Negative Effect of High Fructose Corn Syrup
Soda drinkers, listen up: Drinking high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), the main ingredient in most soft drinks throughout the world, increases your triglyceride levels and your LDL (bad) cholesterol. These effects only occurred in the study participants who drank fructose -- not glucose. This is just the latest among countless findings pointing to the dangers of HFCS in particular. Part of what makes HFCS such an unhealthy product is that it is metabolized to fat in your body more than any other sugar, and, because most fructose is consumed in liquid form, its negative metabolic effects are significantly magnified.Since it has become such a large part of Americans’ diets -- consumption of beverages containing fructose has risen 135 percent from 1977 to 2001 -- HFCS has been linked to:DiabetesObesityMetabolic SyndromeSodas, of course, are not the only source of HFCS (though they represent one of the main ones). But he did bought me a Muffin Maker.Anyway, to bake, I have to find other ways and using a non-stick flat pan is a way. The end product may not look as nice but it taste as nice. Oh well! The world's most expensive maple syrup
Do you love waffles and pancakes? If you just answered an enthusiastic "YES!" to my question, than you must be familiar with maple syrup. Do you want to buy maple syrup in Korea? Good luck, as the selection can be limited. I did find some "pancake syrup" at Costco, but it just didn't taste the same. Buying maple syrup in Seoul can be expensive--really expensive. Let's take a look at what could possibly be, the world's most expensive maple syrup. These bottles of syrup were at my local Homever, in the "Organic Foods" section of farMever. Look at the price of the bottle on the left--no, you're eyes aren't seeing things, that says 45,000w (a whopping $48USD!!) for a 235mL bottle of Coombs Family Farms organic maple syrup! Turns out it was a pricing error--the price tags are mixed up. The real price is 14,000w ($15USD) for 234mL/8oz of maple syrup--still highway robbery. If you wanted to buy (just under) one liter (32oz), it would cost you 56,000w ($60USD)! Four liters (or one gallo
