Years ago I had a dentist who was also a scifi/fantasy fan. Every time I went to the dentist I took a bag of books and if I had remembered to remind him, he would bring a bag of books and we would swap. Sheer Ecstasy (I know, get a life) would ensue and I felt like I had scored. Well finding kindred souls is always tough, my dentist moved and my current dentist isn’t a scifi fan. The web allows easier access to kindred souls so I thought perhaps I would start a book swap. After having a survey on my blog that no one responded to, I thought I’d do it myself. According to the EPA, approximately 4.5%, or 4 million tons of all waste sent to municipal landfills is comprised of textiles. The majority originated from household sources and known as post-consumer waste. Ninety-nine percent of used textiles are recyclable. Textile and clothing recycling can give used clothes and linens a second life and reduces the amount of waste going into landfills. Almost half of all post-consumer textile waste that is recovered is recycled to be used again.

George Hotz, who is the teenage hacker that unlocked the iPhone to be used with carriers other than AT&T, is going to be trading in this iPhone for a new car and 3 8GB iPhones. According to reports the boy reached a deal with CertiCell, who is a mobile phone repair company.
Hotz wrote on his blog that his unlocked iPhone is going to be traded for “a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones.” He also said, “This has been a great end to a great summer.” Hotz also said that he is going to take the three new iPhones and give them to the three online collaborators that helped in break the iPhone from AT&T’s network. All in all they said it took them about 500 hours to unlock the phone, which was released on June 29th.

On my travels around the internet I have come across several swapping websites. A new one called youSwop has been launched recently. Other sites are listed here.
Considering the development of money is one of the greatest events in the history of mankind, enabling goods and people to travel freely, I cannot help but think that this is a slightly backwards step! I can imagine that most of the stuff on these website are things that people really don’t want i.e. rubbish, any good stuff will go on eBay for exchangable elecronic pounds which I find useful in satisifying my consumer needs. In short, I don’t think that these sites will be challenging the eBay or the classified sites at any point soon.
It is also a bit of a mystery to me how these sites expect to make any money. Advertising perhaps?
I find a good service for getting rid of stuff which is not worth selling is freecycle.

Speakers at a Congressional hearing of the House Financial Services Committe called for restructuring ARM loans to help solve the subprime crisis.
