My siblings and I, have a bit of a reputation for travel jinx's and mishaps. We're a well traveled bunch, but somehow a dark cloud seems to follow us around as soon as we set foot near an airport.This latest chapter is very bizarre indeed. My brother had recently gone to Saudi Arabia for a contracting work assignment and involuntary detox. I mean, why pay for the Betty Ford clinic when YOU can get paid wads and detox at the same time. His work agency arranged for a 6 month multiple entry work visa. It was raining quite heavily in the morning when my DD14 was due to leave for the bus stop. So I told her I would drive her to school. While we were driving, the rain got even more heavier with lightening and thunder as well. After dropping her off, I was coming back along the same route when I got stuck behind traffic because the boom gates at the train crossing had come down and they were stuck. After sitting there for about 10 minutes , along with many other drivers, did a u-turn so we could take another route.
So I drove around through the next suburb to come out near the end of my town, only to find I huge grid-lock of cars! We inched slowly and slowly for about 20 minutes, through roads that were starting to flood. I got a little stressed about it because I’ve never driven in weather like that before but luckily I drive a van so I’m higher off the ground than normal sedans.

Events that occurred yesterday (as described by the title) have effectively hammered the last nail in the coffin.
I am getting rid of that car for sure.
It’s almost criminal to sell it to anyone (as of yesterday only the headlights and brakes work) - so I am just going to have it towed to a junkyard. Will call up a couple of shops to see if they are interested in salvaging some useful parts in it - but apart from that, it’s ready to be trashed.

Let me just say that the last 48 hours have done nothing to quell my hatred of all airlines and airports. I hate all of them at least a little but I hold a special animosity for Dulles, Laguardia, and LAX among airports and US Airways and Delta among airlines. WHEELCHAIR users were left stranded at a Hornchurch hospital after a disabled cab service went to the namesake St George's Hospital - in Tooting, South London!
Two members of the Havering Multiple Sclerosis Society were left waiting for nearly an hour in the cold at the hospital in Suttons Lane, while a driver from the London Taxi Card Scheme - an under fire transport service for the disabled - waited outside another hospital over 20 miles away.
The woman MS sufferer had no choice but to clamber out of her wheelchair and get a lift home with a MS Society committee member - with her wheelchair squeezed on the backseat next to her!
Luckily, the man and his carer managed to use the society's minibus after calling the part-time driver out on a late-night emergency after being stranded on February 6.

My postdoctoral advisor at the time, Linus Pauling, had been interested in finding the structure of DNA, but Watson and Crick had largely eclipsed that effort. Now, collaborating with Jim Watson, who had returned from Cambridge, I was taken with a challenge put forth in his famed double-helix manuscript.
In their 1953 publication on the DNA double helix**, Watson and Crick stated: 'It is probably impossible to form this structure with ribose, instead of deoxyribose.' The reason: The 2' hydroxyl on each ribose would create a Van der Waals clash. But the question remained. Could the molecule form any kind of double helix?

The pair wrote down 'Einbahn Strasse' - which means one-way street in German - so they didn't forget where they'd left the hire car.
But when they came to find it again they found that every second street in the inner city was called 'Einbahn Strasse'.
It was only when they found a policeman that they were told the sign was to inform drivers that they were on a one-way street.
They finally managed to find their vehicle hours later with the help of the German police.

My car has been in the shop for three weeks. Three Weeks! Which means that Asher and I have been pretty much entirely stuck at home. And since the average temperature has been something like zero, we haven't wandered out on foot either. Three weeks is a long time to be standed at home.Yesterday, bliss of bliss, my car came home.
