While I was growing up, my mother owned a little clothing shop, and she would refill her inventory every Sunday, in the Garment District on the Lower East Side. The area has changed immensely and most of the wholesalers my mom bought from are no longer there but I have vivid memories of these days. My brother and I would play hide and seek among the racks of clothes, boxes, and shelves until my mom would get annoyed and tell my father to take us. My father, who did not have nearly as much power as my mother, could only entice us to listen to him without promises of ice cream or food from the street vendors. We ate from tons of street carts during these Sundays for years and one of the things I craved most after we stopped going, was the Curried Squid. Since this whole Squidoo Thing is becoming more and more of a big deal, I’ve decided to move my discussions of Squidoo off to another blog in order to not dilute the already broad focus of this one any further.
But first, Kinney left a comment on the Monopoly Credit story from last week, earning a dollar for the Kiva Pool. This brings the total up to $8.00. When it gets to $25 or $50 (I can’t remember how much it is to open an account.) I’ll invest it into a loan determined by my readers.
The name of the new blog is Captain Squid and I encourage you to check it out and let me know what you think. It’s the first blog design I pretty much had to design from the ground up on the back end. (The coloring was inspired by a free WordPress Theme).

This recipe serves: 8
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
2 pounds cleaned squid
salt to taste
freshly ground black pepper
1 3/4 cups all-purpose white flour
1 egg
2 egg whites
3/4 cup very fine, white cornmeal
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil or spray oil
Cooking Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 450°F. Cut the squid bodies widthwise into 1/4
inch rings. Blot dry with paper towels. Leave the tentacles whole.
Season the squid with salt and pepper.
2. Place 1 cup of the flour in a shallow bowl and season with salt and
pepper. Place the egg and whites in another bowl and beat well with a
fork. Combine the remaining 3/4 cup flour with the cornmeal in a third
shallow bowl. Add salt and pepper and whisk to mix.
3. Use 1/3 of the oil to oil a large nonstick frying pan. Dip each
piece of squid first in flour, shaking off the excess, then in egg
mixture, and finally in the cornmeal, again shaking off the excess.
Place the squid in a single layer on the bakin
During August heat waves, I sometimes took my 3 ½ year-old son and 1 ½ year-old daughter to the American Museum of Natural History. The marvelous dinosaur exhibit, on the fourth floor, includes mostly real fossils. No one wants them to crumble in the heat and humidity, so the museum is nicely air-conditioned.
I kept my daughter in a stroller, which she hated. Like my son before her, she soon learned to loosen the harness and scramble out, Houdini-like, while I read to them out loud about the Mesozoic era. They needed to run around, after holing up in the basement for days, and then following my desperate pleas and/or threats to stay still and quiet in the library.
We packed lunch from home, which wasn’t permitted in the museum cafeteria. But if I shrugged and my children smiled from our back corner table, the guard usually winked okay.
Both toddlers napped for two hours or more every afternoon. That’s when I wrote. In those days I believed my novels would find a publis
1 squid, cut into rings
1/2 cup of plain flour
2 eggs
1 cup dried breadcrumbs
2-3 tablespoons of olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
Place the flour in a plastic bag, add the squid rings and, holding the top
of the bag tightly closed, shake the contents. Break the eggs into a small
mixing bowl, add pepper and beat. Dust off the excess flour from the
rings, dip them in the beaten egg and roll in breadcrumbs. Place them on a
plate and refrigerate for 15 minutes (to set the breadcrumbs). Heat the
olive oil in a frypan and cook the rings for 15-20 seconds on each side,
or until golden brown. Don’t overcook! Drop the rings onto a couple of
layers of absorbent kitchen towel, to remove excess oil. Serve quickly,
piping hot, with quarters of lemon to squeeze on top.
