      Sommelier in Training
I’m living vicariously through my friends. Even though I opted not (i.e. was too scared at the time) to, tomorrow my friend and co-worker will take the sommelier certification exam, the next level up from the introductory exam she passed a couple months ago. This very time last year, I wished ‘the sommelier’ luck and she happily passed, so maybe wishing Meg good luck will send positive vibes her way. But I don’t really think she needs them. Almost every minute of her spare time has been spent studying the wine regions of the world and what grapes are grown there, as well as other spirits. She’s done blind tastings with our study group, helped me with the tasting menu weekly, practiced her presentation skills on us and her husband, and carried her blasted flash cards everywhere. (Just kidding about the blasted part, Meg.) So, as far as I can tell, (more…) sommelier certification exam

Italian Military Police Get Sommelier Training to Combat Fraud
Stopping wine fraud is getting plenty of attention these days. Vineyards worldwide are applying everything from tongues to technology in the fight to outsmart counterfeiters.Recently, Kodak (a client of the marketing firm where I work) announced that several of Napa Valley’s top wineries have employed a new high tech anti-counterfeiting technology to protect their brands and wine consumers. Colgin Cellars, HL Vineyards, Vineyard 29 and Staglin Family Vineyard are using a Kodak Security Solutions technology that uses invisible markers that can be added to printing inks, paper and other packaging elements allowing easy authentication of their products. Now the Italian military is getting into the act and has qualified a team of military police as professional sommeliers. A team of 150 lucky officers have completed the 18-month course and are ready to fight counterfeit Italian wines. The Italian Sommeliers' Association encouraged the police to take the training. It is said to be the lar

The Ten-Minute Sommelier A Wine Guide - By Josh Stone
By Josh Stone Of course, if your restaurant is serious about serving wine, you will want to have a wine expert on hand. This kind of expert is called a “sommelier”, which is French for wine steward. However, for the restaurant that wants to just keep a few bottles on the menu, a basic working knowledge of wine will be enough to get a grip on the subject. Wine has enjoyed an explosion in popularity recently. Medical research has confirmed that not only is wine enjoyable to the senses, but it is good for the body as well. The newly-discovered health benefits of wine have led to a resurgence in its popularity. But, of course, wine has always been popular with the serious gourmet. Wine fanciers are a pretty sophisticated lot, and wine knowledge is so intricate and esoteric that you’re almost guaranteed to find no end of things to learn about it. Get used to the idea that you will meet “wine snobs”, who hold their knowledge of wine to be some kind of disting

Skip the Sommelier: Train Your Brain
Research taking place at two major United States universities suggests that humans have a better sense of smell than previously realized and that training olfactory senses can turn many people into experts on specific aromas. It may explain why some people are able to detect subtle differences between wines, beers and spirits, and are able to spot flaws more readily. Researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and the University of California-Berkeley have been engaged in separate research studies looking at how the brain tells the difference between certain smells, how we learn the differences between thousands of odors during childhood and if humans can detect small amounts of lingering odors in the same way that bloodhounds do in tracking a scent. At Northwestern study subjects were asked to smell either a mint or floral odor for 3.5 minutes. After the exposure the researchers found the study participants were much better able to detect differences between

Bordeaux Heist: Look for a Drunk Sommelier
When 3,000 bottles of some of the world's best wine goes missing where should the police look first? In France earlier this week the management of Seignouret Frères, one of the oldest negociant houses, reported they were missing $1.17 million in 2004 grand cru Bordeaux, including cases of Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Latour and other top labels. The wine had been in Seignouret Frères' warehouse for a very short period of time. Police believe wine savvy thieves spent several hours picking out the wine they wanted and loading pallets on a truck. They left behind lower priced wine and concentrated on famous makers. There was no sign of a break in. Because of tracking numbers on the bottles it is believed the wine is being shipped outside of France.
