or so I have been working on a social network site with a friend of mine. I have a cool domain name for it and I was waiting for a right time and a right partner(s) to start working on this cool project.
So we have started working, design is done, many modifications have been implemented but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Before you start telling me that there are many social networking sites I am going to tell you that this one is targeting very specific market, non english speakers. The market is small, around 20 million people if you count near by countries but it makes the challenge even more fun from the marketing point of view.
I can't describe how happy I feel when we work on the project, only the thought about it makes me happy because I know it will be a success and it will make a lot of money even though money is not my main motivator but still it play a big role in anything you do.

At some point I reached over 200 contacts on Flickr, and realized that I really didn’t know over half those people. Most of them had added me as a friend and I reciprocated out of habit. A good portion of my photos are marked for “friends only” for a reason, and so adding strangers as friends was a habit I needed to break.
So over the past couple months I’ve been demoting and dropping “friends”. It felt a little weird, and even though these people are strangers, I still felt “please don’t take this personally” every time I hit the remove button.
I’m now down to 60 friends on Flickr and while it seems much more manageable, it still feels like too many. Because really what a “friend” means to me on Flickr is - people that are allowed to see my daughter in the bathtub. What Flickr needs is a sort of BFF checkbox. Some sort of upgraded friend.

Su FB ci mettete la faccia, intesa come “nome e cognome”; ci sono anche persone che appaiono con un nick, ma sono un’esigua minoranza. Questo fa si che dietro ogni profilo di Facebook sappiate esattamente chi c’è e come raggiungere tale persona. In un profilo trovate indicato (parlo genericamente) se la persona in questione ha un blog, il suo indirizzo di e-mail (sotto forma di immagine, NON utilizzabile da spam-bot ed impossibile da utilizzare con un copia&incolla), i suoi IM, dove lavora ed eventualmente dove vive. Quanto siano preziosi questi dati, per un social networker, è facilmente immaginabile.
Se volete, in FB potete indicare le vostre attività e i vostri interessi (che musica ascoltate, i video che vedete, i libri che leggete o le cose che vi piacciono), utilizzandoli come base per scoprire persone con interessi simili.

Social networks have become topic de jour over the last year, and with good reason. According to Alexa, Facebook now has more pageviews than Google. Pageviews of course translate into profits at some stage, and so the market for social networks like Facebook has become extremely hot over the last while, with Microsoft winning a bidding war against Google and other players to invest $240 mil in a minority stake valuing Facebook at $15 billion. That's a big number, and has some people worried about another dotcom overvaluation meltdown.
Financials aside though, Facebook taking over the global social network has worried me for other reasons. Firstly, there is nothing that Mr Zuckerberg et al have done that is really revolutionary - as this Economist article points out, Facebook merely took the idea of social graphing and implemented it more effectively than the likes of Plaxo and other online address books. Looks like Google is acquiring Zingku, a site that offers a social network for mobile users. "We've entered into an agreement to have Google acquire our Zingku service," the site says.(Credit: Zingku)A Google spokesman confirmed the news: "I can confirm that we acquired certain assets and technology of Zingku. We believe these assets can help build products and features that will benefit our users, advertisers and publishers. Aside from that, we have no plans to announce at this time."The move is only the latest on Google's part in the mobile space. In 2005, Google bought a social-networking service called Dodgeball that links people up through text message. The company hasn't really done anything with it yet. Then in July, Google acquired Grand Central, a company that allows people to merge all their phone calls into one number.

I don’t know why some/a lot of people want to have a huge network online. Is it that important to show that you are connected to dozens thousands of people whom you don’t even know and place a message on social networks asking people to just randomly add you?
The most commonly used sentence “I want to have lots of friends”. To think that I thought face to face networking is more real than virtual. Perhaps I’m wrong but this kind of message speaks of who you are. Either you are lonely in the virtual world or you are desperate. It’s a virtual world. Not real world. Even if it’s in the real world when you are breathing oxygen, I don’t think such an act would even get you more friends. Just more people to avoid you, maybe.
Every Multiply group I’ve joined have at least one such message. I didn’t join to receive such messages. I joined to receive group related messages. Not un-related stuff (otherwise spam/meaningless/useless stuf
