Conference Call for Papers: Media, Spiritualities and Social Change June 4-7, 2008 Center for Media, Religion and Culture, School of Journalism and Mass CommunicationUniversity of Colorado, Boulderwww.mediareligion.orgwww.Colorado.edu/journalism/cmrcThis interdisciplinary conference seeks proposals for papers and panels exploring the ways in which media culture, civic engagement and spiritualities intersect to form practices, discourses and the material expressions of social change. In an era of globalization, the media age has introduced a new set of conditions and opportunities for the nature, practice and integration of spirituality and civic engagement. Increasingly, the concept of ³spirituality² has become recontextualized, reinserted and reimagined within discourses about social and environmental change. Integral to this project are the media, which provide salient values and symbols to asynthesis of public and private identities, practices and beliefs. New spiritual sensibilit

While traditional journalism remains a significant institution in the Asia-Pacific region, new forms of journalism – from blogs to online news services - have begun to offer audiences new sources for news and new opportunities for selfexpression. This raises questions about what is journalism in the context of an era in which traditional notions and practices of journalism are continually challenged/matched/complemented by an explosion of digital practices, insurrections

Espoo, Finland and London, UK - Nokia and Vodafone have launched a new website designed to help share ideas on how to use mobile communications for social and environmental benefits. The site, www.shareideas.org, was created in direct response to NGO calls for better tools and information to help them use mobile services more effectively in their work.Although initially created with support from Nokia and Vodafone, the site will be developed by a wide range of individuals and organizations interested in using mobile technology for social change. The wiki format means people can edit, update or comment on case studies and stories on the site, and add their own from wherever they are around the world.Case studies are grouped into six key areas - civic engagement, economic empowerment, education, environment, health and safety, and humanitarian relief projects - topics chosen after consultation with many NGOs.Stories already shared on the site include how the development of an SMS alert s
Nick of Tingog.Com has started a writing project which he calls Group Writing Project: Write for Musa Dumasidsing. He hopes to make the sentiments of Pinoys known in an effort to raise a collective voice on the issue Dimasidsing’s brutal murder.
Musa Dimasidsing, a school district supervisor, and a designated election supervisor, stood up, in the face of death, because he knew that it was the right thing to do. He was the one who exposed the anomalies in Maguindanao, and he was shot dead on Saturday night.
Dimasidsing, 60, sustained two gunshot wounds in the head and body. He had exposed the alleged fraudulent mayoral race in his hometown where the prominent Montawal and Matalam political clans were at loggerheads.

I have a thing about painting flowers and will spend my entire life trying to achieve the perfect petal. This is why I am drawn to this beautiful piece from Ashely Cecil. While many artists contribute to socially conscious endeavors there aren't very many who do it on a daily basis with every ounce of their being and every stroke of the brush. Meet Ashely Cecil, self titled "painting journalist". First just let me say she does amazing work but secondly she contributes to social causes with the sale of every painting. (Why didn't I think of that???) The painting shown here supports the Center for Women and Families. From Ashely's website, "I’m addressing philanthropic issues utilizing painting as my medium of communication. Much like a photojournalist, I travel to locations/events of cultural interest and capture them, only with my brush. My talent is as an artist, my passion is advocating for social change; this is how the two work together."Visit her site, buy an original, support
