I recently bought these two skirts on eBay for $18 plus delivery (a little over $25 all up). This skirt is by Tigerlily. I picked it up in as-new condition on eBay for only $13! I'd like to try a straight skirt with my suit jacket and knee high boots this Autumn. I'm a pattern size 18 hip, 16 waist, and tend to wear A line or flared skirts. Sometimes though I think this does just make me look large on the bottom and I want to try some straight skirts. How would you make a straight skirt fit, and how do you walk in them? As I have a big butt and broad thighs I guess I buy a pattern for the hips and then make the darts (esp at the back) a lot deeper until the waist fits OK. As my knees are scary I'm thinking of either a below knee length or a just below full calf length hence the walking issues. There's a straight plus skirt in September Burda WOF which has a straight front but a godet in centre back so you can walk. I like that idea a lot. Inspired by Sheila457's beautiful skirt review, I have some questions about using quilting cottons for skirts. Are there any general guidelines to follow when choosing quilting cottons for skirts? And I'm assuming I should prewash & dry at least once on hot, but should I do more? And do quilting cotton skirts wear well without slips, or should I underline them with self-fabric? I've never underlined anything, but I guess it's just a matter of cutting doubles of the panels and then treating them as one. (?) Also, I've made skirts with embroidered linen, but linen seems to have a more substantial hand than plain cotton. Are quilting cotton skirts pretty thin? Maybe I could/should wear a slip? I have been reading the professional dress thread with interest. I can see regional differences in what is considered to be ok office attire. My question is why with women wearing slacks, trousers, pants etc for over 50 years, it is still considered to be inappropriate in an office setting, or less than professional? Yet, on the other hand, according to the other thread and the link in the orginal post, women are expected to dress like men in order to be taken seriously in their profession. Why is a knee length skirt ok, but bermuda shorts the same length not ok in an office setting? What is the difference? I truly do not understand why one is ok and the other is not.
