Sinking Jakarta to halt extraction of groundwater
Firms that extract water have to pump it back into the ground.JAKARTA'S government is about to throw the sinking city a life raft in hopes of keeping it afloat. City officials plan to introduce legislation to curtail the extraction of groundwater, said to be a prime culprit behind the problem. A study by the World Bank released last week warned that much of the Indonesian capital would be underwater by 2025. However, three buildings in central Jakarta have already been affected. One of them is an annexe to the country's first shopping centre, Sarinah Plaza, a landmark built in the 1963 Sukarno era. It is tilting and an order to demolish it has been issued. The head of the building unit for Jakarta's provincial government, Hari Sasongko, said that the main building appeared to be inta

It's a simple financial strategy, and it's not new, but it has enormously helped our family's finances. And I encourage you to start using sinking funds even while paying off debt via the debt snowball. Simply put, sinking funds are a reserve of money set aside for some purpose. It's a commonly used business and government practice, and it should be part of a healthy personal budget as well. If you think of your family as a company that you've been assigned to manage, it would only make sense to make sure you have funds readily available for the many thing

Indonesia's Thirsty Capital Is A Sinking City
Separated by a road and a viscous finger of black, garbage- choked water, the stilt-house slum of Muara Baru and the BMW car dealership that faces it appear as if from different worlds. But on December 6, 2025, these two extremes of the Indonesian capital will have something in common as a World Bank study shows that unless action is taken, they and much of the coastal city of 12 million will be submerged by seawater. Experts have pinpointed that date as the next peak of an 18.6-year astronomical cycle, when sea levels will rise enough to engulf much of Indonesia's low-lying capital. Climate change is causing sea levels to rise, but the study's authors say the main problem is that Jakarta is sinking under the weight of out-of-control development. "Th

You just find out right after you die or when something really bad happens and then you finally get yourself checked out to see if there is something wrong with you.I did some reading about it, and well, some of the symptoms say that I might have some mild depression. Thing is, I don't have enough resources to get myself checked out, which is why a lot of people are so unaware of actually having it themselves. Because a lot of people can't afford it, they risk themselves.Right now, I have been pretty much going on a downward spiral. Like most women, I am pretty moody, but lately, I've been feeling like getting rebellious. I guess the pressure of being the eldest child and that high expectations are wearing out on

Is Motorola a sinking ship…….When will it finally sink?
Stu Reed, the former president of its struggling cell phone unit, is leaving the company. Reed's departure is the latest in a series of executive reshuffles at Motorola, which comes a month after Chief Executive Greg Brown took over the unit and said that he was considering options such as splitting it off from the rest of the company. This has come close on the heels of another announcement last week that Motorola Inc.'s chief marketing officer Casey Keller has left the company. If this wasn’t enough, Motorola finds itself embroiled in another controversy. South Korea's Fair Trade Commission has announced today that it has levied a fine of 696 million won, or $729,000, on Motorola Korea Inc. for helping three South Korean companies collude to get orders from government agenci

This is a number came from converting all earnings to credits, and then adding it all up. Then the total Revenues from advertising is divided by the total credits in circulation. This ratio is multiplied by the number of credits that you have, and gives you your total earnings. So, why is this number so low right now? Well, 40 million credits is a hugely inflated number. Recession is such an ugly word. Try walking down a New York City street these days without getting knocked off the sidewalk by a gaggle of foreigners brandishing a circumference of high-end shopping bags like a cardboard armada. Sinking Island
Written by Benoît Sokal, Sinking Island is the first game in a planned series of adventures starring middle-aged private investigator Jack Norm. The third-person game takes place on a private tropical island that is literally sinking under the weight of the colossal art deco-styled hotel built upon it. In a classic whodunit with a twist, the hotel's billionaire owner is murdered, and there are ten suspects on the island, each with a strong motive for having done the deed. It's up to Norm to determine the true culprit. The catch? With the island sinking and the game occurring over a simulated three day period, lower level environments (and the evidence they contain) are only available until they're lost forever to the sea, so players will need to make best use of locations and time in order to succeed.Sinking Island German DemoSinking Island German DemoSinking Island Screenshots Sinking Island Trailer Release Date: 27 November 2007Genre: Adventure

Like rats from a sinking ship; what will happen the big music?
Last week an email from circulated around the headquarters of music label EMI.  It was from Guy Hands, whose private equity group owns the label.  According to the Telegraph, it came with a stark message: “The recorded music industry… has for too long been dependent on how many CDs can be sold,” he wrote. “Rather than embracing digitalisation and the opportunities it brings for promotion of product and distribution through multiple channels, the industry has stuck its head in the sand.” This email should have sent out on paper, years ago.  Now it’s hard to imagine how any big music label is going to survive, and they shouldn’t.  How many other media industries have the same product and profit model as 15 years ago?  How many other media industries insult their consumer base like the RIAA recently did with their 222k lawsuit against a single mother? Now Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are finding their inner anarchist, and Madonna’s Ka

It's an Irish film, a simple musical romance filmed on a small budget with actors I'd never heard of. Despite the fact that I was bawling in the bathroom once the film was over with, I loved it. Yes, I was moved that much by this film that I actually cried at the end. It was simply magnificent. Gorgeous. Beautiful in its detail, adorable in its nuances, and touching in its minimalistic story. I actually downloaded the soundtrack off of iTunes. That's rare for me, being a bit of a pirate (arrrgh) and all. I liked this film and its music that much that I wanted to make sure the artists were supported and I didn't feel like waiting to pick up the soundtrack in a store. I needed to hear it again, in all its splendor.I know, I'm beginning to gush, but in all honesty you should see this film. It's that g

A Sinking SCHIP: SCHIP slips as Dems trip over message
Everyone wants healthy kids right? Of course we do. I am a father of three sons myself and had no health care when my first son was born and for another two years thereafter. Who would possibly say that health care for children is a bad idea? Of course nobody would. However, when it gets past the ‘feel good about yourself’ part it always has to come to who will fund it and manage it. Some groups of people want a vast federally controlled bureaucracy to mange it. You can probably guess which party would prefer that. Alternatively, it can be put in place, managed and funded by individual states. And you can most likely guess which party would prefer that as well. Here in California there will be a children’s universal health care bill on the ballot in the next general election. Moreover, I might just vote for it too. Preventive health care is a win win for everyone involved. Nevertheless, the fact is that Democrats do not trust individual states to manage themselves. The sinking dollar
WiseBread.com has an interesting article on the slowly “sinking” US currency. The author has pointed out a couple of things that directly affect us because of that. “It takes more than $1.40 to buy one euro today. It cost less than $1 as recently as late 2002. A Canadian dollar is worth just about exactly a US dollar–a parity not seen since the 1970s. Should Wise Bread readers care? If so, what should they do?” Read full article Tags: us currency | euro | inflation

Rats from a sinking ship? McCain loses 3 more staffers
Rats from a sinking ship? Presidential hopeful John McCain, Senator from Arizona, has had another staff shake up. Three more aides in his already skeletal political department have resigned leaving but a single staffer, Mike Dennehy. Sen. McCain has taken a new approach to his campaign and is embracing the war in Iraq with a three state plan for rallying support for the troops and their mission. And while I do appreciate the sacrifices that John McCain has made for our country I have to wonder at the sincerity of this show of support for the troops. Embracing the war even more than he has in the past reminds me of the way the Democrats consistently lose elections because they are so far in left field and then come to the conclusion that the reason they lost is they are not far enough left. So they attempt to give the people even more socialism. How much longer can John McCain hold out? It will be exactly as long as his money lasts and not a second longer. The recent rise in his polling

Sunday Scribblings: I get that sinking feeling…
A darkening sky The shadows lengthening by The retreating sun The darkness creeping in As time passes by; You were crying now I get that sinking feeling I’ll never see you again; This is the last time I held out my hand To touch your beautiful golden lock To look at your tear-streaked face To see what’s reflected in your eyes… Where there were love and passion before Now replaced by sorrow and grief. Farewell, this I accept Even if I taste the bitterness; This I feel when I see you off The loneliness, the emptiness… Will both remain with me forever? I’ve only just get on-line, and saw this week prompt for Sunday Scribblings, which is “I get that sinking feeling…“. Well, since Sunday is almost over here in KL, so my entry is just this short piece.

Nihon chinbotsu/Sinking Of Japan (2006) (Japanese)
In the aftermath of a major earthquake under Suraga Bay, Misaki (a young girl) and Toshiro (a pilot of a deep sea submarine) are rescued from a ruined city street just as leaking gasoline ignites. Reiko Abe arrives just in time, lowered from a helicopter. Scientists predict that Japan will sink within 40 years, due to subduction of a tectonic plate to the west. However, Dr. Tadokoro, who leads an oceanic scientific team that includes Toshiro, calculates that this will happen far sooner, in only 338.54 days. He presents his findings to Prime Minister Yamamoto who decides to create a new department for impending disaster relief assigning Saoro Takamori to cover the new duties, since of all his ministers she will take it seriously but also bring “heart” to the process. As further earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions devastate Japan, the government pleads with other countries to take refugees. Yamamoto flies to China to negotiate relocations there, but his plane is de

Taking Care of Mom & Bringing Up Tweens: The Meaning of Sandwich Generation is Sinking In
Just as I thought I can start blogging early (like 9PM) because my husband went to the movie with our friend Eric, and I have already done my motherly love and duties with my kids (they are in bed reading at 9PM)...; just as I thought I have plenty of time to blog before hubby comes home ... I discovered a disaster in our house! Our refrigerator has been leaking in the back for quite a while without us noticing it until tonight :( I went to the garage to look for something when I noticed that my hubby's work bench is flooded. I looked up and the ceiling has bubbles couple with some dripping spots. I called Tatay and he helped me explore. He asked "Isn't that ceiling where your refrigerator is?". Yeah. So I went upstairs to check. Not good. There were some black spots on the floor side of the refrigerator. I asked Tatay's help to pull the refrigerator out - and lo and behold - it's flooded in the back! Actually it's not flooded but the semi-wooden floor is swollen and moldy

Another Rat Leaves The Sinking Ship
BNP councillor resigns from district councilONE of the six British National Party district councillors has resigned saying he can no longer commit sufficient time to his electors. Terry Farr, who represented the Loughton Alderton ward and whose seat is up for re-election next May, was one of the original three BNP councillors elected onto Epping Forest District Council. He announced his resignation this morning in a statement sent to the Epping Forest Guardian. Mr Farr, who said one of the reasons for his decision was the expansion of his own business, said: "I can no longer spend the volume of time needed to represent fully the needs of Alderton ward. I feel that the people who voted for me deserve total commitment." He added that when with Pat and Tom Richardson he was elected to the council the trio "broke new ground in Epping". He said they spent the next three years with a "massive" workload that included building the party's base while looking forward to reinforcements which wer

      That Sinking Feeling
Drop-out centre time again. I was late, and had my appointment pushed back which irritated me greatly. Where I live, there isn't exactly a myriad of entertainment, not unless you count knocking OAP's out of the way in a fit of impatience as they meander along being overtaken by snails.I spent the next two and a bit hours wandering aimlessly round the shops looking at all the nice things I can't afford to buy, and settled into Waterstones to flick through books on comsic ordering (no help whatsoever, easy to believe it when you're making loads of money from talking about it) star signs (apparently Virgos are 'critical and fussy' and 'fear being loved' Like I didn't know. And they charge £7.99 to tell me this?) and conspiracy theories. For the record, I believe Marilyn Monroe was murdered. I also believe David Icke needs electric shock therapy. If the world were really run by giant lizards, there'd be an awful lot of lizard dung lying around. I suppose it's invisible to human

      Sinking Friends
This is a paper I did for my Great Books Class about The Battle of Salamis By during the Persian wars. I think it turned out OK, so, I shall post it. Sinking Friends September 28, 480 BC. The cool sea breeze brushed Artemesia's face gently as she squinted into the gray, early morning hours. All night the Persian navy had been closing off escape for the Greek fleet. Among the soldiers she had heard it whispered that the Greeks were panicking and fighting amongst themselves. It was growing lighter now, the sun quickly ascending a cloudless sky. The oars of the rowers below swished in their hypnotic, monotonous rhythm, propelling the boat forward. “Do you think they'll get away?” said a craggy voice behind her. Turning around, she saw Acacius, her second in command. He was an old, tough-as-nails ship-captain who'd been on the water from childhood till now. Deliberately Artemesia began pacing the deck. “They aren't going to get away. I just hope they don't stay in that bay, Sa

ICEBERG HORNSWOGGLE AKA HELP! THIS SHIP IS SINKING!
BUFFALO: I see that a 25 square mile chunk of ice fell off one of the polar ice caps yesterday. BIRD: Aw, that's nice. BUFFALO: Dude, there were a lot of polar bears on that ice, who are now wondering what the fook is happening. Now what if we towed that chunk of ice to the Caribbean, melted it, bottled it as Iceberg Water, millions of years old, and sold it for a cool five dollars a bottle? BIRD: Er, dude, have you considered all those polar bears that pissed on it before they divebombed into the ocean, like? BUFFALO: OK. Right. We'll change the labels, bung in some bubbles and call it Iceberg Lemonade! BIRD: Bwilliant! Right, now who do we know with a boat? BUFFALO: Well, Sparky was in the merchant navy. He could be our skipper. And we could hire a boat. BIRD: Which would cost? BUFFALO: A lot of dineros. Oh, fook it. Back to poverty. Oh, well, it's moot... we'll be at war with China soon, is my guess... seein' as how they're going to give billions to Iran to develop nooks, an

      sinking
I'm trying to stay positive. But it's hard.My depression is getting worse. I can't seem to shake this feeling of hopelessness and despair. It's getting harder to get out of bed. And when I do, I spend the day struggling on the edge of tears. I try to put on a brave face because I don't want anyone to see me like this but I'm sinking fast. It seems so pointless.I try to remember how happy I was but it seems so long ago. I can't remember it. I can't seem to remember anything. My mind seems to be slipping. Everything seems so alien to me. Who I was. Who I am. It makes no sense.I am getting so tired of trying.046753My life as I transition from a boy to a girl and the mess I make along the way.

Venice is Sinking - Undecided/Pulaski Heights
Funny that Venice is Sinking should originate from Athens, Georgia. Not funny ha-ha, more wry smilingly so since it was from that very spot that one of indie's former champions arose. Karolyn Troupe and Daniel Lawson are the twin voices who propel ViS's delightful chamber pop sound. On songs like "Pulaski Heights' the band germ a floatilla of noises that approximate equal parts Frames/Arcade
