Potential Arsenal signings unlikely as Wenger wants cake
Despite the lack of club football, there’s still a little bit going on around the Arsenal Football Club at the moment. Kicking things off with a little bit of transfer news and Dynamo Zagreb and Croatian international midfielder Luca Modric, who was previously thought to be a target of Arsenal, has stated his intent to play in the English Premiership. “I’d love to play in the Premiership. I’d like things to happen soon and it’s possible maybe even this winter. I don’t have a preference for a club. There are a few big clubs in England where I would love to play.” There were huge rumours circulating just after Arsene Wenger signed Eduardo da Silva that he would be following up by bringing Modric to Arsenal as well. However, these never eventuated and although Modric is unquestionably a fine player, I can’t see them eventuating now either. There a couple of reasons for this; the first being that he is too similar to both Tomas Rosicky and A

Wenger's secret steps for succesful signings
Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is undoubtedly one of the best talent spotters in football.During his tenure as manager in London, the Frenchman has signed relative unknowns such Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Robert Pires, assembling the first unbeaten team in the top tier of English football since Preston North End in 1889.Since then the Arsenal coach has continued to buy fabulous talents at low prices. Robin van Persie cost Arsenal around £3. Gael Clichy was signed for £250,000. Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal's linchpin in midfield, came the Gunners for free from Barcelona at the tender age of 16.Arsenal also has some bright talents on the verge of breaking into the first team squad. Mathieu Flamini, who has recently been chosen ahead of Gilberto Silva as Arsenal's defensive midfielder came for free, as did Nicklas Bendtner. In fact, of Arsenal's young stars, only Theo Walcott was expensive, costing Arsene Wenger £5 million which could raise to a a possible £12 million, still a deal

Frank Rijkaard delighted with summer signings
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has made a rare statement about how pleased he is with their summer signings.Rijkaard has so far avoided commenting on how he feels about the club's recent arrivals, but that changed yesterday as he declared: "Eric Abidal is fast, defends without fuss and can play in attack when he is placed further forward. In addition he is physically very strong, this is why he is with us and he will contribute a lot."Gabi Milito is an excellent defender. He is ready. He knows when to play the ball from the back at the right moment. This is a great additional option in our offensive tasks. Another great reinforcement."Yaya Toure is an excellent defensive midfielder. We have left Henry. Thierry speaks for himself as the great player that he is. He is getting better and better and is approaching more and more his old level."Aside from this, I believe that Giovani (Dos Santos) and Bojan (Krkic) can be excellent for us

      Rio's respect for new signings
Rio Ferdinand is full of admiration for United's new signings after their less than ideal introduction to life at Old Trafford. The Reds defender says injuries and suspensions to established players have not provided the best platform for Nani and Carlos Tevez, when they would have preferred to slide into a more settled side."It isn’t easy for the new signings to slot in, especially when there are a lot of injuries and the side’s a bit fragmented," said Ferdinand."It’s been a difficult period for them, but they’ve done well. Carlos’ movement, his know-how and his nous around the pitch have been very, very good."Nani’s the young player with huge potential. It’s fantastic for Nani, having come to a big club like United, to hit the target like that."In that respect he’s similar to Ronaldo, he can hit the ball so hard that as long as he hits the target he’s got a chance of scoring like he did today."Hopefully we're going to see a lot more goals like that in the future."

Surely There Must Be At least 2 More Signings To Come!
Well, like all Arsenal fans,I was relieved to see that we signed another strikerEduardo, earlier in the week to bring our striker tally up to 4 again after Henry's transfer. I hope to see some more signings over the next 2 weeks well before the two pre-season tournaments and the annual trip to Austria. Before Eduardo arrived there were many rumours that after Henry had gone, there were 2 more strikers planned to come in - a young striker and an experienced striker!   I assume that Eduardo is the experienced striker and, therefore, hopefully another younger striker will be brought in (not african please) bearing in mind Adebayor will probably be missing along with Toure and Eboue for the Afican tournament early next year! Most people seem to agree that a proper winger is definitely needed to add some width to our attack which was obviously missing last season. Cross fingers the Reyes transfer saga will be ended soon and we will g

      Premiership Striker Signings
There has been some big transfer news in the English Premiership this week involving the league’s top teams. The week started with Croatian Eduardo Da Silva (he was born in Brazil, but moved to Croatia at age 15) signing with Arsenal on a £7.5million transfer from Dinamo Zagreb. While nobody can truly call him Henry’s replacement, he could be the type of forward Arsenal need: a true goal poacher. Da Silva has showed that he can score in European club competitions as well as at the international level, but the question is how quickly can he adapt to the English game. There have been questions surrounding Arsenal’s reaction to Henry’s transfer, namely what it could hold for the future of Arsene Wenger. Certainly, the move for Da Silva isn’t a huge splash, but it seems like the type of signing that Wenger has always made at his time at Arsenal, a relatively cheap player that is ready to make the move to a major club. The Wenger saga is not over for Arsen

No Signings So It Must Be About Henry
It is impossible to calculate the moral mischief, if I may so express it, that mental lying has produced in society. When a man has so far corrupted and prostituted the chastity of his mind as to subscribe his professional belief to things he does not believe he has prepared himself for the commission of every other crime. - Thomas Paine It ought to be nailed to the wall of every sports journalists desk. If it makes one of them think about what they create in their rumours purporting to be stories then it is worth doing. Another day, another slew of rumour or innuendo in the palpably feeble attempts to portray their minds as fonts of all knowledge. And yet they are not the only guilty parties in this charade that passes as football news. The players assist in their ways, knowledgable in the facts that their attempts to sway the minds of peers are also based on false interpretations. Yet all they do is feed the media monster, rarely achieving their aims, inviting scorn and derision for

Signings / Trades / Rumors For Wednesday
4:43 PMThe Lightning have acquired some size and hopefully scoring today. They traded a 2nd or 3rd round pick in the 2007 or 2008 Entry Draft to the Panthers for Chris Gratton. I think the time for Gratton to ever blossom into a consistent scoring threat ended a long time ago. He isn't much more than a 15 goal scorer on a 3rd line.3:36 PMFrom TSN: The Globe is reporting that Balsillie and the city (Hamilton) could announce the deal (to relocate the Predators to Hamilton) after a meeting on Wednesday. This agreement would mean that the area of Kitchener-Waterloo would be out of the running for the franchise as had earlier been speculated.1:40 PMThe Ducks have signed coach Randy Carlyle to a 1-year contract extension. Arsenal’s Ghost Signings - Part Four
The latest musings of Spanish Fry Looking solely at the results and performances from this season it would be easy to conclude that it is essential for Arsenal to dip into the transfer market and make a number of big signings. What this conclusion doesn’t incorporate is the fact that - without spending a cent - Arsenal will be making a significant number of ghost signings in the summer. I of course refer to the players who have spent large amounts of the season injured and - should they return to fitness - will seem like new signings for the club. I thought it would be good to take a look at the players whose seasons have been severely hampered by injury and investigate the effect that their prospective returns could have on Arsenal’s 2007-2008 season. Ghost Signing #4 - Thierry Henry The equation is simple; take Thierry Henry out of the Arsenal starting line-up and they are a lesser side than with him in it. This is not a criticism of the other players at manager Arsene Wenger&
