Digital signage are electronic displays that are installed in public spaces. Digital signs are typically used to entertain, inform or advertise (together known as "adfotainment"). Major benefits of digital signs over traditional static signs are that the content can be exchanged without effort, animations can be shown, the signs can adapt to the context and audience, and even be interactive. Once upon a time (a few years ago) I had aspirations to launch a digital signage network in pharmacies. I had even secured the endorsement of one of the largest pharmaceutical distributors in the country, thus opening the door to thousands of independent pharmacists. I thought that I had it made. With the amount of money spent on pharmaceutical advertising and the wealth of products in any given p

I have spent significant time in transit stations over the last few months, for work and travel, and have undoubtedly come across a wealth of static signs in these locations. Unless an advertiser has gone for "station domination" - buying ad space throughout a terminal or rail stop to encompass the environment - the advertising in a transit station can be as diverse as the product lines in a Wal M
I imagine a world in which programming once confined to a single medium exists on multiple platforms. I imagine a world where viewers hold the key to the media kingdom. I imagine a world where programming adapts to viewers. I imagine a world that is devoid of media boundaries. The world I imagine is now. Programming once confined to your television set is living and breathing on the Internet, your
The Digital Signage Association has published “Retail Digital Signage ROI: Finding the break-even point,” an exclusive research report that uses real-world numbers to estimate ROI and benefits for various types of retail.“The one question that gets asked about digital signage more than any other is, ‘What is this going to do for me?’” said James Bickers, editor of Retail Customer Exper
As digital signage efforts continue to grow both locally and worldwide, more and more major out-of-home initiatives are being implemented. In what may be one of the most aggressive examples of expectations set by the digital signage industry, the Washington DC metro system has recently issued a “zero dollar” bid for a wholesale infrastructure swap-out of its printed advertising to digital signage. Officially dubbed The Metro Channel (TMC), the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has issued an official (and public) RFP for a no-cost contract to support the following components of a digital signage installation for the nation’s second largest transit system (via Display Search):1. Financing2. Design / Build3. Operate, Maintain, Create Content and Sell contentAs a “
Signage, the bane of every retail store’s existence. It often seems like customers don’t read signs at all. A good sign can increase business and make your store easier to navigate. A bad one can just be a big waste of money.
I have written about the topic of Art and Advertising previously, citing the widespread benefits of linking art and digital signage. The aesthetic and cultural value captured by sharing screen time with artistic endeavors, such as working with emerging artists, non-profit art organizations, museums, galleries is priceless.A recent post on the blog Digital Out-of-Home brings to light the most recent artistic campaign brought forth from the partnership between ONESTOP Media Group, an out-of-home digital company in the retail, hospitality, and transit industries; Art for Commerce; and the Toronto Transit Commission. The campaign give the city’s commuters a chance to see how photographers have interpreted their city. The 2nd Annual Photography Exhibition – themed on ‘Contacting Toronto: M

I am a fervent supporter of making digital signage interactive, as evidenced by my company's work with innovative mobile technology company MegaPhone. Giving people the ability to interact with digital signage networks, billboards, and screens in commercial and public spaces further connects them to brands through an entertaining experience. Building a richer experience and conversation, represents the fullness of digital signage interactivity.Interactivity drives consumer participation, loyalty, and adds exponential value to digital signage...contributing to what draws people to look at, and pay attention to, digital screens. Whether interactivity is facilitated via touch, gesture control, or through the use of one's mobile phone (MegaPhone), the added feature drives engagement, involveme
Adcentricity, a digital out-of-home media sales network, has raised $3 million in Series A Funding. The Toronto-based company offers advertising sales and media management services to a portfolio of over 70 digital signage networks. The Company's model is very similar to that of network aggregator SeeSaw Networks. With all of the success SeeSaw has seen in the last year - linking up with Ripple TV, BroadSign (a major digital signage software provider), and Locamoda (interactive mobile technology) - Adcentricity needs to make a significant push in the United States to maintain its relevancy. Adcentricity's founder, Rob Gorrie, is a passionate technology advocate and media professional within the digital signage industry. He and I have had some very good conversations about the direction and

Digital Signage refers to recent and growing form of advertising that uses electronic data to generate a sign that is not required to be physically changed in any form and displays the content on an electronic screen. The screen is usually a scrolling message board, electronic billboards, projection screens and LCD or plasma display panel. The sign is administered remotely using a computer or any other which are located remotely. Digital signage offers higher return on investment compared to traditional printed signs.Digital signage is new and experimental way to reach people when they are outside of their homes. Usually, this kind of advertisement consists of colorful banners, videos with or without audio and simple text messages that are displayed on electronic screens, displaying differ

For those of us who are old enough to remember, service stations were special at one time. The stations were colorful, had neat signage and were a very important spot for travelers around the country. These stations provided full-service gasoline pumping and oil, tire repair, auto repair and restrooms. In addition, there were vending machines where you could purchase cold soft drinks. The Signal stations were my favorite. This ink and watercolor depicts the signs that rose above these stations. 8" x 10", bristol board.
I must commend Bill Gerba for bringing up the topic of Focus Media's falling share price on his blog. For those of you who are not familiar with Focus Media, the China-based Company is one of the largest digital signage network operators in the world. As of March 31, 2007, Focus Media had approximately 90,000 display units in its commercial location network; 40,700 display units in its in-store network; 124,500 advertising poster frames installed throughout China; and 200 outdoor LED displays in Shanghai.Bill notes in his blog that despite strong earnings and growth, Focus Media's shares have declined in value 25% over the course of the last few days. The Company's shares are currently trading at $33.25, off of a 52-week high of $66.30.Having previously worked at one of the world's largest
The use of digital signage is the biggest revolution that has picked up in the publicity, promotion and communication strategy industry. The advertising industry has witnessed various forms of advertising from the traditional methods to the recent ones. From a time where rock painting was prominent as a means of advertising and promotion, the advertising industry has come up in a great way. Advertising industry is a brilliant example of research and development. The later forms of marketing were door-to-door marketing and then emerged the media. Then on; radio, television and print media began catering to all the advertising. These media have been the most effective medium for advertising and branding. They have almost captured the advertising industry and people couldnt believe that there

For some reason or another, I cannot get this comment to stick to Bill Gerba's post covering his views of the recent Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas. He makes a number of strong points in what the show's governing body must do to improve it for next year. My first vote is: move DSE back to Chicago and get out of Las Vegas. I love Vegas but it provides the wrong backdrop to the show and our industry. There were positive and negative attributes of the Digital Signage Expo. First of all, Vegas is not the right venue for the show. It provides a distorted view of the state of our industry. Digital signs are everywhere in Las Vegas, leading people to believe that our industry is beyond the stage that it is currently in. Many of the digital signage installations in Vegas are ill-conceived and ma
All marketers are storytellers. Digital signs give marketers the ability to tell infinitely targeted, flexible, and dynamic stories to consumers. During his keynote address at the Digital Signage Expo, Dr. Andrew Lippman, Director of MIT Media Lab, evoked many times in his speech that signs are for telling stories.Digital signage is an amazingly powerful medium that when utilized correctly tells unparalleled stories which, most importantly, consumers want to see and hear.
Molson Coors, one of the largest brewers in the world, is diving into the digital signage arena with an investment in The Bar Channel, a Canadian digital out-of-media network that broadcasts programming via closed-circuit Internet to subscriber bars. After launching in April, the network grew to 88 Ontario bars and about $600,000 in first-year revenue, and it expects to add 50 establishments in Calgary and 50 in Ontario during the coming year. Despite the modest scale, the Bar Channel already has attracted a low six-figure investment from Molson Coors. The brewer is intrigued Bar Channel's ability to let it customize messaging at each bar, which gives it the ability to emphasize drink specials, or even show employee-training videos during slower hours. "We've seen share gains in the bars wh
Tips from athletes on the U.S. ski and snowboarding teams will appear on Brand Connections' Active Outdoor-Winter Network. The BrandConnections network has 10,000 digital and static ad spaces, in lift lines and lodge lobbies at ski resorts across the country. The program runs November through April.Using tips from top skiers and snowboarders is designed to get more eyeballs on the signs and to increase recall and subsequent conversions for the brands advertised on the network, according to CEO Brian Martin. The athletes involved will also make appearances at special events to sign autographs and offer tips. Advertisers can jump aboard to distribute product samples or engage consumers in a sweepstakes. (via MediaBuyerPlanner)I completely agree with the Network's CEO, Brian Martin, that tips
With Super Tuesday, the metaphorical playoffs for politics, upon us, I still cannot believe that not one of the presidential candidates have taken advantage of digital signage within their campaigns. The medium's targeting ability makes it the perfect weapon for political advertising. With the amount of money spent on TV advertising by candidates from both parties, over $100 million thus far, I question why no one in their camps have pointed to out-of-home media networks as a powerful medium to dynamically target potential voters. With the fight for delegates on both sides of the party line taking place in 24 states today, every congressional district counts. For example, all Democratic contests will award delegates by various proportional formulas. Typically, they give a portion to the sta
In another resounding example of the power of digital signage, Clear Channel announced that they will provide digital reporting of primary election results via its high-tech LED billboard networks in partnership with MSNBC and CNBC.Throughout the day on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, digital displays in Albuquerque, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Memphis will offer election results on Super Tuesday. Real-time content will be supplied as an automated feed from MSNBC from polling sites, and results will be posted throughout Super Tuesday on 53 of Clear Channel Outdoor digital displays. After Tuesday, Clear Channel Outdoor will work with CNBC to post results in Milwaukee on February 19, wrapping up with a primary finale in Akron, Cleveland and Columbus on March 4.The Outdoor Advertising Assoc

this is an open sign for a feed store, there are three huge trailers where sacks of feeds are kept, they sell different corn granules and other feed products. there's this guy whose sole job is to place the sack of feeds on customer's car, what i don't understand is why he has to walk all the way through the trailer located on the other end of the store and get the feed from there, carrying the heavy sack on his back, when he can place a couple on the store front so he will have less efforts. but i guess, different people have their own ways of doing things.
By: David LittleI recently received an email from a friend that made me think about how important accuracy is when communicating on a digital sign and how difficult it can be to attain. The email said in part:"I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. By: David LittleFrequent hotel guests are becoming more familiar with the growing presence of digital signs in lobbies, near hotel restaurants and bars and even outside meeting rooms. That's not too surprising. A recent forecast from market researcher iSuppli Corp. indicated the indoor-venue market for digital signs, which includes hotels, will reach 683,000 units this year and increase at a 26 percent compounded annual growth rate to 1.7 million units in 2010. According iSuppli, a good deal of the growth will come as hoteliers continue to transition from guest room TVs to flat panel displays, like plasma and LCD screens, and target guests with customized information and entertainment. With the ability to deliver the same information displayed in lobbies to in-room displays, hoteliers can offer guests quick access to what's happening in their facilities from the comfort and privacy of guest rooms."How guests perceive their rooms can be more powerful than any other factors in terms of
The results of a confidential, four-year study of small business owners and their marketing functions by Miser Advertising and Marketing in Carlsbad, CA, have revealed a somewhat disturbing, but entirely understandable, conclusion. Well it appears that the 800-pound gorilla Google has set its sights set on the digital signage market. The New Scientist Web site broke the story earlier this month that the search-engine company has filed for a patent on a way to divvy up ads on a network of electronic signs. The ideas seems to be to give retailers and others a simple way to organize an advertising campaign to promote inventory on, for example, a digital signage network display or displays near their stores in a mall.Just as Google allows advertisers on the search engine to specify characteristics of their online ad campaigns, such as what keywords to use, how much money to spend, and what to say in ads, the new Google system is likely to give retailers a way to get very specific about what product is advertised, how and where it's advertised and how much will be spent to advertise it.Granted, Google is only at the patent filing stage, and it's much too soon to discuss this approach in detail. However, that's not w
Carrefour in Korea is now a thing of the past. As I posted earlier, Homever is the name of the new store. The signage is now up for Homever and the grand opening is on November 9, 2006.
