by: Kathryn WhittakerWhile we don’t have to rely on sewing machines to satisfy our basic clothing needs, more and more people today turn to sewing to create unique, luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces. Every family has that hand embroidered grandmother’s table cloth or a hand-made quilt, and these pieces are as cherished as the most sophisticated haute couture creations. And instead of paying heft
Sewing has been around almost as long as mankind has. Throughout the millennia, the most technological changes have been in the materials used to make sewing needles and thread. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century, that a sewing machine was developed. Not surprisingly, it caused a riot. Surprisingly, it wasn’t in a good way.The DiscoveryHand sewing is almost intuitive. In order to fix a sewing machine you have to identify the exact problem you have. Of course, this is easier said than done since the number of possible problems is large. However, there are a few common problems which are more likely to cause your machine to stall. It’s best to run through this [...]
Yesterday was my 2nd attempt on the sewing machine, but no luck on sewing nice things.I have brought a new book with template patterns, but don't know how to trace it to my cloth. Do I need to tracing paper or how?? So headache. So I just play around with those old fabric and manage to sew a cushion, but it was too ugly to show on here. I also manage to sew a casing for my umbrella. Pink one. That one also abit "cacat". But yet still usable. I have it on my bag now.I wanted to sew bags, I can just stumble upon this website that teach how to sew a boxy pouch tutorial.Cute isn't it. But this tutorial is without linning, I want the pouch with inner linning.Felt are very nice too, but its kinda expensive compare to normal fabric and its real hard to find it here too. This Ai the alien tutorial

I love it! I remember my mother sewing a lot when I was little. She had a sewing machine like this where the sewing machine folded into the table - except hers was white. I had always wanted one like this and could not believe it when I walked into the thrift shop one day and saw this sitting there with a price tag of $19.99!SOLD!It works perfectly! And it's so simple. The only complaint I have now is that it sits in my dinning room - and my dinning room will never be the same.It even came with the original hand book:
Well, it was love at first sight for Val and Ruth. Val’s birthday present arrived around noon today and she and her mom were positively giddy about it. Watching Val pull the lightweight machine from its box — I couldn’t believe how happy the two appeared. Both of them gasped with delight as each element of the sewing machine revealed itself. Val is downstairs watching the How-to DVD. She looked up from the “show” to tell Ruth, “Give me 24 hours. Then I show it to you.” Ruth literally clapped her hands in joy. Who knew I could make the two of them so incredibly happy with this Overstock.com purchase. Ruth helped Val pick it out online. More on this soon, as new pillows, drapes, duvet covers and other wonderful Val-made pieces appear in our house.
I am fighting with the stupid sewing machine. Sera wants the thread just so and the machine won’t do it. She has all the settings written down but none of them are working so now I’m the one left to fix it! This is crap. I have to go fix us all something to eat and work on her machine some more. Can’t handle when she is upset, it’s just not cool man. It upsets the whole balance!!!

One of the oldest hobbies that women have been enjoying for many generations is embroidering. Hi everyone:
I am about to move from US to China in two months, and I am trying to decide how I could transport my Bernina 430, which is a full-size computerized sewing machine. I really would like to move it as a carry-on on the airplane rather than shipping it as one piece of luggage.
I was wondering if anyone here has tried to transport it as a carry-on on an airplane? and if so, did the security check give you any problems?
thank you! :)

Hello:
I am a new sewer and looking into purchasing a Viking 400. Can any one offer any information regarding this machine? I.E.: how old the model is, known problems . . . or a better machine with in the same price range of 1100.00.
Thanks,

Hi, DH and I happened on an antique street fair today and I found my dream machine of 55 years ago! I bought a Betsy Ross electric toy machine in perfect running condition, complete with red "alligator" case, but lacking the instruction manual. Does anyone know how to thread it? I have looked on line, but I don't seem to find what I need. If you had one, and remember how the threading and tension works, please let me know. I am almost as excited as I would have been at ten!
Thanks a mil!Last post by kathi s at Sun 14 Oct 2007 10:55:22 PM Total posts: 8

I'm almost finished making the rounds to the different local dealers and I somehow end up always talking to the owners. And I don't know if it's just me but I always come away feeling like I do when I've been car hunting. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but there is a lot of arrogance there. I feel they are trying to CONVINCE me that they are the only reputable place in town and their products are the best. And since they can't all be right, I wish they'd just be friendly and share their knowledge and let me decide where I want to shop.
Don't get me wrong, it's not an extremely horrible experience. I can handle it. But it is a pattern I'm noticing and wish it weren't so. My heart feels all fluttery for a while afterwards and a lot of times I come out thinking I'm just gonna go to Sears and get a Kenmore so I won't have to interact with a "dealer". :tounge: -- Edited on 11/19/07 3:55 PM --Last post by Elaray at Mon 26 Nov 2007 04:07:42 AM Total posts: 52

I think I have figured out one reason that I haven't been sewing much lately. After my last room re-arrangement, when sitting at my machine I face a wall. I think it makes me feel really uncomfortable and closed in, so I avoid it.
When you're sewing, what's out in front of you? Do you face a TV, a window, a wall, or something else? Have you tried sewing while facing different directions? I'd love to hear what works for others.
I'm not really into Feng Shui, but I almost think there's some kind of energy flow problem with my current arrangement that I need to fix. I'm thinking that I may need my machine right out in the middle of a room, with lots of open space around me.Last post by fixedgearhead at Mon 24 Dec 2007 10:59:21 AM Total posts: 64

I haven't sewn for a long time, and I am thinking that I would like to try my hand at machine embroidery as well as free motion quilting. I know nothing about either! I don't have a machine anymore, so I would be purchasing a new sewing machine also. Budget will be a concern. Is it possible to embroider on a sewing machine without using a hoop? What machine would you recommend for a beginner in both areas? Do I need separate machines for each function? Is there one machine that could accomodate my desire to do it all including simple garments and home decorating? I would welcome any advice!Last post by PattiannSG at Wed 26 Mar 2008 09:58:18 PM Total posts: 4

My machine (a Kenmore 158.4311) manual says it has a "serging or pine leaf stretch stitching" setting. It goes on to describe it as useful with woven and knitted fabrics and swimwear. I want to cut up some old towels and turn them into rags by serging the edges. Will that work on this machine or is that too heavy duty for a sm? The setting looks like the following except put the forward slashes on top of the line: _____//////
Also included in the description is this setting /////

I was reading a review of a Pfaff 130 and the reviewer stated it was a "Hall of Fame" machine. I've used the same comment with some of my machine reviews -- something like "If there were a Hall of Fame for sewing machines, the Singer Featherweight would be one of the first three inductees."
I'm curious -- if there really were a Sewing Machine Hall of Fame, what machines would you nominate?
I think qualifications would be longevity, reputation, reliability, perhaps innovation? What else? Like any Hall of Fame, I think you'd have to exclude current models (so no Viking Platinums and such).
My nominees would be a Singer 221, 201, and a Bernina 830. I think the Pfaff 130 is also a good nomination.
Anyone else?Last post by Quilting Queen at Wed 09 Apr 2008 12:36:48 AM Total posts: 13

I've downgraded myself to a regular beginner (vs. advanced beginner) because I've not been able to sew for nearly a year because of health problems. I had a minor stroke following a car accident, and I'm only now able to sit comfortably for any length of time. And I'm finding that I'm a little wooly minded about some sewing matters, and other things  My physical therapist suggested that I use my mind in a different way than I do for my work (I'm a writer), and so I've decided to jump in and try an easy pattern to get my feet wet again. I was all set to do the one seam pants from Cutting Line Designs, but when I read through the directions, I noticed that a serger is called for in several of the steps. This is the long way to the question I have. I don't have s serger. Is there a
Please help me to process this. I bought a sewing machine today. It was listed on CraigsList as ?Singer 513 Sewing Machine Works in Case - $25.? I was thinking on my way over there that this worked out great. I?ll have a spare machine just in time to teach my first class with tomorrow. I drive to the address, which turns out to be in the projects. A young boy comes out and asks me if I?m here for the stroller or the sewing machine. I answer and he steps out with the sewing machine and places it on the porch floor. He takes the cover off to show it to me. It looks really old and I immediately thought of offering $10 for it, hoping they would say no and I could just walk away. He yells inside ?$10, Ma?? and I hear ?Yeah.? I paid him for it and came home. I thoroughly cleaned the

I just started sewing and bought a cheap yamata for 60 euros. I made a bag and curtains and on another attempt to make curtains with a thicker fabric I had a problem with the machine getting unthreaded after 2-3 stitches. I tried everything, from cleanibg, oiling the parts, changing tension, needle, thread. This happens mostly when I have multiple layers of fabric 6-8.
I spend almost 5 hours try
I graduated college last year, and I am getting my apartment in August. I am a bit limited in space (and money!) so I was wondering what kind of makeshift table solution I can use. Would a regular computer desk work? Card table? A cheap folding table?
I really appreciate the ideas. I'd like to keep this as inexpensive as possible!Last post by BJ1400 at Fri 13 Jun 2008 09:57:31 AM Total posts: 1
