New Cuban president Raul Castro has commuted all but three death sentences to 30 years or life sentences. The three not commuted have been convicted of terrorism. Two were charged with bombing hotels in the last decade. The third is a Cuban American charged with murder. Castro said: "This does not mean we have eliminated the death penalty from the penal code. It would be irresponsible and ingenuous to renounce the dissuasive power that capital punishment has..."He added: "This decision was not undertaken because of pressure, but as a sovereign act in line with the humanitarian and ethical conduct that has characterized the Cuban revolution from the start." Midday Open Thread: Raul Castro Commutes Death Sentences, Cubans Join the Blogosphere
Raul Castro announced today that he is commuting all death sentences in Cuba (with the exception of 3 individuals charged with terrorism) to lesser sentences, citing humanitarian reasons. Cuba has faced pressure from human-rights activists to abolish its death penalty, which is still administered via firing squad. The commutations are the latest in a wave of populist reforms introduced by Raul Castro since his older brother Fidel Castro retired and handed him power. Over the weekend he announced he's raising pensions for retirees as well as salaries for some government employees, while earlier this month he lifted long-time bans on Cubans owning cell phones and staying in hotels reserved for foreigners. Nine men, including Chinese, French and Dutch nationals, were sentenced to death by Indonesia's Supreme Court on Tuesday for producing millions of pills of the illegal recreational drug Ecstasy. The punishment was harsher than that rendered last year by a lower court, which ordered the execution of two alleged Indonesian ringleaders while handing down lesser sentences to others. The Dutch and French governments promptly reiterated their opposition to the death penalty, but had no specific reaction to the case because they had not yet been informed directly. The factory in Banten province, 60 miles west of Jakarta, could produce 300,000 Ecstasy tablets a week, prosecutors said. Some $142 million worth of Ecstasy, methamphetamines, ketamine and chemical ingredients were seized at the plant, among the largest discovered in Indonesia.

      Lessons from Deadwood: Sentences
I was going to talk about the dialogue in Deadwood, the individual and powerful voice given to each character. But Milch's genius goes beyond snappy dialogue. It goes beneath dialogue, to something even more foundational. Sentences. I've been devouring Francine Prose's book, Reading Like a Writer. Devouring in small doses. I'll read a page while watching my son's fencing lesson, or I'll sneak it into the bathroom with the rats and spiders, or take it in the car to flip open at stop lights. I'm up to chapter three, Sentences. There is beauty in a sentence, isn't there? Sure, there's beauty to a careful story arc and to a brilliant idea—but without the sentence even the most honed plotline of the most novel premise is relegated to "that commercial stuff," the careless tripe that fails to inspire, even if it does sell a million copies. And of course, there are the books made up entirely of beautiful sentences, without the plot or premise, and these are great for
